A jury was selected yesterday to try reputed leader of the Clansman gang, 27-year-old Tesha Miller, who is facing a murder charge.

He is charged with the murder of Rohan Haughton, who was fatally shot in Spanish Town, St Catherine, in April 2004.

The alleged witness in the case was fatally shot in St Elizabeth in August last year.

The Crown will be proceeding under the Evidence Amendment Act to have the statement of the deceased witness admitted into evidence.

Senior Puisne Judge Marva McIntosh is presiding at the trial in the Home Circuit Court.

Miller's bail was revoked last year July because he breached one of the conditions of his bail.

Miller was also facing a triple-murder trial, but the charges were withdrawn in October last year because the police had difficulty locating the witness.

Miller was charged with the murder of Orane Jackson, Jeffrey Johnson and Nicole Allen. They were fatally shot on January 14, 2005, at Cresser Lane, Braeton, St Catherine.

Miller is being represented by defence lawyers Valerie Neita-Robertson and Everton Bird.

A man who works as a groundsman at the Hunts Bay Police Station was recently apprehended by the police for allegedly delivering a cellular phone to someone in the police custody.

Clinton Campbell, also known as 'Mandela', was held after a sting operation was conducted on Spanish Town Road, St Andrew.

phone inside a cell

According to a source from the Hunts Bay Police Station, Campbell told a female that he could get a phone inside a cell for her. It further mentioned that this information was brought to the police where a sting operation was done.

The money was marked and the transaction performed between Campbell and the female whereby he took the sum of $2,000 from her and the cellular phone that was to be delivered.

Campbell was apprehended and the money that was marked by the police found on his person. He appeared before the Corpo-rate Area Resident Magistrate's Court where he was given bail in the sum of $50,000 with a surety. He is to return to court on June 29.

His job function at the Hunts Bay Police Station was to clean the cells and the general compound.

Curious onlookers try to peek inside the Empire Supermarket following an attempted robbery there yesterday. - Winston Sill Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

Police were kept busy yesterday after the attempted robbery at the Empire Supermarket in Lane Plaza Liguanea, St Andrew, and the killing of an unidentified man along Slipe Road, a few hours later.

Police say about 3:45 p.m., three men went into the super-market and demanded money. A licensed firearm holder challenged them, killing one. His cronies, one of whom was dressed in khaki clothing, escaped. The police retrieved a 9mm pistol from the body of the dead man who is yet to be identified.

Scores of persons who visited the scene demanded their own brand of justice. "Bwoy, him can rob nobody else. Him just try too hard and dead. Dem must work man, dem need fi work," remarked Milderd Maise.

Other persons told THE STAR that the area has been plagued by robbers in recent times and it is hoped that the killing of this man will put a stop to the problem.

Meanwhile, police are still searching for the two men who escaped reportedly on a motorcycle. Up to late evening, a strong police presence was still in the area.

It was while there that police were alerted to the Slipe Road killing. Reports are that the man was walking along the road when two men approached him and pulled a handgun. He ran a short distance but was chased and shot by his attackers. He died on the spot.

Lover's trap

Dear Pastor,

I am a Jamaican living in the United States. I have a very big problem. I have been seeing a man for over a year. About three months ago, he told me that he is married and he has a son with his wife. It hurt me so much to know that I fell in love with this man.

He treated me like a queen from the beginning of our relationship. After he told me, I wanted to tell him that I do not want to be with him anymore, but I did not. His wife and child are in Jamaica.

Pastor, please help me. I know that it is very bad to be seeing someone else's man or woman but I can't help it. What am I to do?

C.

Dear C.,

Keep in mind, madam, that although this man fooled you for about a year, you are now in a position to decide whether or not you will continue in the relationship or kick him in the butt. He played an old trick on you. He hid the truth from you and caused you fall to in love with him. Then he shocked you with the news that he is married, when he knows that it would be very difficult for you to tell him to go.

If you continue to have him in your life, he will be standing in the way of another man who may truly fall in love with you but would not express it or visit you because of him.

So, I suggest that although you love him, you should tell him that it is over between both of you.

The old-age question

June 9, 2009
Started By Garrick2 Comments
Dear Pastor,

I have been reading your column since I was a little girl. I've seen you give advice to others and now I'm in need of it myself.

I am in my early 20s and I plan on getting baptised. I recently met this wonderful man and he is everything I am looking for in a man, (honest, loyal, loving). He doesn't pressure me for sex because I don't believe in sex before marriage. He had asked me to marry him but I said no because of the short period of time that we have known each other.

The other problem is that my family and friends know about him but don't know how old he is. He is 50. My sisters have spoken to him and find him to be a nice person but I still haven't told anyone how old he is because of how I think they will react. Another issue is that he was married once but his wife cheated on him for almost 15 years and now he is divorced.

What I want to know is, can you marry a person if their former spouse is still alive? Would it be frowned upon by God? I humbly await your reply.

S.W.

Dear S.W.,

The issues that are tormenting your mind are one, whether a 50-year-old man is too old to marry a woman who is in her early 20s. Some would say, yes, he is too old. Others would disagree. My answer is, any woman who is in love with a man that age, and is willing to tolerate his jealousy, should not allow anybody to discourage her from doing so. On the other hand, such a man should remember that the time may come when he may not be able to satisfy his wife sexually and if she is not a faithful and godly Christian, she may cheat.

Your second concern is about divorce and re-marriage. I believe that the Bible gives permission for divorce and re-marriage. However, many Christians and churches do not support divorce and re-marriage; therefore, it is up to your own conviction.

God will not condemn any divorced person who has re-married, I believe.

If you love this man, do not to worry whether your relatives will look down on the relationship because of his age. You are old enough to do what you wish to do.

Absence makes me wonder

Dear Pastor,

I am a regular reader of your column. I have a problem and I need your advice. I am a married woman living in the States but my husband lives in Jamaica. The problem is, I fell ill in 2007 and had to go through treatment. I told him about my illness and he never once visited me. He has a visa, so his ability to travel was not an issue. I filed for him and now it's coming through.

What do you think I should do? I am awaiting your advice.

M.C., New York, United States

Dear M.C.,

Your husband should be ashamed of himself. Even if he had to borrow the money to pay for his fare, he should have visited you. Shame, shame, shame on him. However, you will have to make your own decision as to whether you wish to continue the filing process to have him come to live with you in America.

A funeral home van drives past a police car as it transports the body of prominent lawyer 'Berry' Bryan from his Stony Hill home (in background) yesterday. - Norman Grindley

The St Andrew North Police have yet to establish a motive for the murder of popular attorney, 72-year-old Berriston 'Berry' Bryan.

Bryan's body was found at his Wedmore Rise, Stony Hill, St Andrew, home shortly after 8 a.m. yesterday by one of his employees. The lawyer is commonly known for his recent involvement in the Peter King murder case, where he represented Sheldon Pusey, the man accused of killing the ambassador.

brutal attack

Investigators told THE STAR that Bryan's body bore the signs of a brutal attack. He was reportedly also hit on the head. It is believed that he lived alone.

Bryan's client, Pusey, told the court during his trial that he had killed King, but had done it in self-defence after King had made sex-ual advances towards him. He was later convicted of manslaughter.

homosexual lifestyle

Shortly after the conviction, Berry appealed the decision, citing that jurors had not been shown tapes allegedly documenting King's homosexual lifestyle. His appeal was turned down, however, and Pusey was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

A well-respected senior attorney, Bryan served on the Bar for several years. Investigations continue.

MOM CHASES, STONES TEACHER

June 9, 2009
Started By Garrick5 Comments

Police in Hanover were recently called to a high school in the parish after a teacher was attacked by the parent who was upset that her child was scolded earlier.

Reports reaching THE STAR indicate that last Wednesday, persons at the school watched in disbelief as the disgruntled parent argued with the teacher before chasing her around the school while hurling stones and bottles at her.

The Area One police confirmed the incident but several calls to school officials went unanswered.

"We were called in to reprimand a woman on Wednesday at the school following a dispute with her and a teacher there," Detective Corporal Chase McDougal told THE STAR.

He said when the police arrived at the school, the chase was already over but the woman was still voicing her opinion that she did not like the way in which her 12-year-old child was scolded.

stand outside the class

THE STAR was told that the child was ordered to stand outside the class because she had not completed her homework.

The child is said to have went home and later returned with her enraged mother who argued in front of the staffroom that her child should have not been made to leave the class.

The police say, based on what they were told, things got heated after the teacher told the woman that she should not try and tell her how to run her class.

"Well, based on what persons at the school told us, the woman got mad when the teacher said that ... . She immediately grabbed stones and began chasing the teacher," Detective McDougal said, adding that the teacher was chased for a few minutes before making it back to the staffroom where she was locked inside, away from the wrath of the parent.

The woman was later escorted from the school compound. She was not charged.

SAN FRANCISCO -

Apple Inc. slashed the entry price for an iPhone in half and lowered some laptops by $300 Monday, the company's first dramatic price cuts since the recession began a year and a half ago.

With co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs absent until his medical leave is over at the end of June, Apple's biggest unveiling at its annual conference for software developers was a new model of the iPhone, the 3G S. It looks the same but sports a faster processor, longer battery life, an internal compass, a video camera and a photo camera with better resolution and auto-focus.

A 16-gigabyte version of the 3G S will cost $199 and a 32-gigabyte version will be $299.

The 8-gigabyte iPhone 3G, which came out last year, now costs $99, instead of $199. When the iPhone debuted two years ago, eager Apple fans had to shell out $499 for a 4-gigabyte version and $599 for 8 gigs.

Apple is known for ending events with a last-minute surprise, leading to some anticipation that Jobs might make a cameo in Monday's two-hour presentation. But he did not take the stage, and Apple's top marketing executive, Philip Schiller, exited without uttering the company's signature line that there would be "one more thing."

The latest iPhones go on sale June 19, just as two-year contracts for the buyers of the original models are expiring and Apple faces tougher competition from the likes of Research in Motion Ltd. and Palm Inc. On Saturday Palm came out with a well-regarded iPhone rival, the $200 Pre.

Industry analyst Michael Gartenberg, with the Interpret market-research firm, said the new iPhone pricing breaks through an important barrier for consumers. It will likely cause other smart phone makers to offer something similar, he said.

"Every $100 you move down in consumer electronics brings in a lot more customers," he said. "Ninety-nine dollars is a psychological price point, so that's a real barrier to move through. It becomes something people can afford it becomes an affordable luxury."

Shares of Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple slipped 82 cents to close at $143.85.

Schiller said in an interview that $99 iPhone will reach people just joining the smart phone market. But lowering the price could be risky for Apple unless its new versions have enough appealing features to keep them selling briskly at higher prices. AT&T Inc., the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the U.S., said Monday it's confident its wireless profit margins will hold steady overall. AT&T shares fell 16 cents to $24.40.

Apple might also be banking on expanding the profits it reaps from taking 30 percent of the revenue from downloadable applications on the iPhone and the iPod Touch. A new version of the iPhone operating software, available for download June 17, lets software developers sell additional content, like electronic books or extra levels to a video game, within applications.

Among other upgrades, the new iPhone software will let people download movies and TV shows using the device's cellular connection. It will let users send photos and videos the same way they send text messages, bringing the iPhone in line with other smart phones. (AT&T won't offer this feature until late in the summer.) And the new software will let parents limit the kinds of applications kids can download.

Apple had already announced other new features in the new software such as the ability to cut, copy and paste text and the ability for "tethering," which means using the iPhone to connect a computer to the Internet. However, while 22 wireless carriers will enable tethering, AT&T will not.

For its MacBook line, Apple showed off new laptops that boast longer battery life and faster processors. The company rolled out a new 13-inch MacBook Pro that starts at $1,200, or $100 lower than an existing similar notebook, and a 15-inch Macbook Pro that starts at $1,700, $300 less than the current model.

It also lowered the price on the ultra-thin MacBook Air to $1,500 from $1,800. The 17-inch MacBook Pro, unveiled in January, costs $2,500 and up, though it now has a faster processor at the same price.

Apple also is trying to steal share in the computer market by enhancing its Mac operating system. The next version, Snow Leopard, comes out in September, before Microsoft Corp.'s next edition of Windows hits PCs Oct. 22. Among Snow Leopard's improvements is built-in support for Microsoft's Exchange Server software, so Apple programs for e-mail, calendars and contacts could become more useful in corporate settings.

One thing looming over Apple is the growing popularity of cheaper, stripped- down laptops sometimes called "netbooks." They are one of the few segments of the overall PC business that has been growing in the recession, while Apple's Mac revenue dropped 16 percent in the most recent quarter.

Jobs has said Apple doesn't know how to build a sub-$500 computer "that's not a piece of junk." That doesn't mean Apple won't someday try to enter that market, but on Monday at least, Schiller sounded similar themes. He said in the interview that netbooks are merely "very underpowered, poorly designed cheap notebooks."

"They have poor keyboards, poor screens, and none of the features and capabilities to do what a MacBook, for example, can," he said. "We think those products are below the quality standards of something Apple would like to make."

In this photo released by Brazil's Air Force, Brazil's Navy ... RECIFE, Brazil Search crews have recovered 24 bodies of passengers on the Air France flight that crashed in the Atlantic Ocean eight days ago with 228 people on board, Brazil's military said Monday. They also recovered a large tail section from the jetliner, helping narrow the hunt for "black boxes" that could reveal the disaster's cause.

Air Force Col. Henry Munhoz says eight more bodies were found Monday, near where 16 others were recovered since Saturday roughly 400 miles (640 kilometers) northeast of the Fernando de Noronha islands off Brazil's northern coast, and about 45 miles (70 kilometers) from where the jet was last heard from on May 31.

Some high-tech help is on the way two U.S. Navy devices capable of picking up the flight recorders' emergency beacons far below on the ocean floor. What caused the Airbus A330-200 to plunge into the middle of the ocean on May 31 with 228 people on board might not be known until those black boxes are found.

But some Air France pilots aren't waiting for a definitive answer. With investigators looking at the possibility that external speed monitors iced over and gave dangerously false readings to c**kpit computers in a thunderstorm, a union is urging pilots to refuse to fly Airbus A330 and A340 planes unless the monitors known as Pitot tubes are replaced.

Brazilian Air Force officer Henry Nunhoz shows a picture during ... An internal memo sent to Air France pilots Monday and obtained by The Associated Press urges them to refuse to fly unless at least two of the three Pitot sensors on each planes have been replaced. The instruments have drawn attention because of other incidents in which the monitors have iced over at high altitudes.

The leader of another pilots' union, however, said Monday that Pitot troubles probably didn't cause the Flight 447 disaster.

Searchers must move quickly to find answers in the c**kpit voice and data recorders, because acoustic pingers on the boxes begin to fade 30 days after crashes.

While large pieces of plane debris along with 16 bodies has helped narrow the search, it remains a daunting task in waters up to 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) deep and an ocean floor marked by rugged mountains.

"Finding the debris helps because you can eliminate a large part of the ocean," said U.S. Air Force Col. Willie Berges, chief of the U.S. military liaison office in Brazil and commander of the American military forces supporting the search operation.

Brazil's Air Force official Henry Munhoz, right, and Navy official ... But ocean currents over the eight days since the disaster have pushed floating wreckage far and wide, complicating the search, Berges said. "In the sense that as the debris drifts away, you're not sure exactly where the black boxes or other parts of the aircraft are on the bottom of the ocean."

The U.S. Navy has helped locate black boxes in difficult situations before: pings from an Adam Air jet that crashed Jan. 1, 2007, off Indonesia's coast were picked up 25 days later by a navy team.

The two towed pinger locators the U.S. is sending are expected to arrive in Brazil late Monday and will be dropped into the ocean near the debris field by Thursday, Berges said. The search is focusing on several hundred square miles (square kilometers) roughly 400 miles (640 kilometers) northeast of the Fernando de Noronha islands off Brazil's northern coast.

The listening devices themselves are five-feet long and weigh 70 pounds. One will be towed by a Brazilian ship, the other by a French vessel, slowly trawling in a grid pattern across the search area. The devices can detect emergency beacons to a depth of 20,000 feet (6,100 meters).

Federal Police forensic officers prepare a container for the ... Cables attached to the devices lead to on-board computers, enabling a 10-person team that accompanies each device to listen for pings and to visually see them on a screen, like a radar spotting objects in air.

The French nuclear attack submarine Emeraude, arriving later this week, also will try to find the acoustic pings, military spokesman Christophe Prazuck said.

If the pings are located, French deep-water unmanned subs aboard the oceanographic survey ship Pourquoi Pas will attempt to retrieve the boxes from the ocean floor.

This area of the Atlantic Ocean is littered with floating garbage, vexing the initial search effort. Days after the plane went down, the weather let up and bodies began to surface, giving searchers more to go on.

Searchers also spotted two airplane seats and debris with Air France's logo, and recovered dozens of structural components from the plane. They had already recovered jet wing fragments, and said hundreds of personal items believed to from passengers were plucked from the water.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Brazil's military would do all it can to recover bodies for grieving families. "During this painful time it's not going to resolve the problem, but it is an immense comfort to know they can bury their loved ones," he said on his national radio program Monday.

Brazil's Air Force official Henry Munhoz, left, speaks during ... France is leading the investigation into the cause, while Brazil focuses on the recovery of bodies and wreckage. The Ventose, a French military frigate now operating under Brazilian command, has brought aboard seven of the 16 bodies and about 30 pieces of debris that "most probably come from the plane," Prazuck said.

Brazil says the search area lies southeast of the jet's last transmission automatic messages signaling catastrophic electrical failure and loss of cabin pressure. The messages mean Flight 447 likely broke apart in turbulent weather while flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. The location of the wreckage could mean the pilot was trying to turn around in mid-flight.

The L-shaped metal Pitot tubes jut from the wing or fuselage of a plane, and are heated to prevent icing. The pressure of air entering the tubes lets sensors measure the speed and angle of flight. An iced-over, blocked or malfunctioning Pitot tube could cause an airspeed sensor to fail, and lead the computer controlling the plane to accelerate or decelerate in a potentially dangerous fashion.

Air France said it began replacing the Pitot tubes on the Airbus A330 model on April 27 after an improved version became available, and will finish the work in the "coming weeks." The monitors had not yet been replaced on the plane that crashed.

An official with the Alter union, speaking on condition of anonymity because the memo was not publicly released, said there is a "strong presumption" among their pilot members that a Pitot problem precipitated the crash. The memo says the airline should have grounded all A330 and A340 jets pending the replacement, and warns of a "real risk of loss of control" due to Pitot problems.

France's investigating agency said the messages suggest the plane received inconsistent airspeed readings from different instruments as it struggled in a violent thunderstorm.

But the secretary general of another French pilots' union, SNPL, said Monday the tubes were not likely the cause of the crash. Pitots are "a possible contributing factor," Julien Gourguechon said, but even without them, "we can make the plane fly."

Brazilian military officials declined to comment on the condition of the bodies or identify hundreds of recovered personal items, after some relatives said they felt devastated by Saturday's announcement that a laptop computer and briefcase containing a plane ticket had been found.

"We don't want to cause them more suffering," Air Force Col. Henry Munhoz said.

Recovered bodies and wreckage are being taken first to a military staging area at the Fernando de Noronha islands, and then to the northeastern coastal city of Recife for identification.

The Pentagon has said there are no signs that terrorism was involved. French officials have also said there are no signs, but that terrorism has not been ruled out. Brazil's defense minister said the possibility wasn't considered.

Three days ago at the MTV Movie Awards, Sacha Baron Cohen caused a firestorm as "Bruno" when he landed ass first on Eminem. Many speculated for the days whether the stunt was staged or real, with everyone speaking except the man himself. Breaking his silence, Em spoke to RR about the entire "ordeal".

RR: Can you clear up the Bruno stunt at the MTV Awards? Was it staged or planned?
Eminem: Sacha called me when we were in Europe and he had an idea to do something outrageous at the Movie Awards. I'm a big fan of his work so I agreed to get involved with the gag.

If it wasn't planned the way you agreed to, do you hold MTV or Sacha responsible and will you take any kind of action?
I'm thrilled that we pulled this off better than we rehearsed it. It had so many people going "nuts" so to speak. Everyone was blowing me up about it.

After you left the ceremony, where did you go?
After the ceremony I went back to my hotel and laughed uncontrollably for about 3 hours. Especially after I saw it on air.

There is a rumor that you hotel room was robbed and theives got 60K and your laptop while you were at ceremony. Is that true and if so what would someone find on your computer?
The only thing was that I lost a Nike watch that we were looking for. The rest it is made-up like half the other stuff out there.

How do you think the show with Jay went and how did it feel performing "Renegade" again?
I love performing with Jay. Its the third time we've done the song together live and its always fun. It was an honor to share the stage with him again and to work with his band.

Four men arrested in connection with the seizure of nearly 2000 pounds of compressed ganja in Stony Hill, St. Andrew late last month are to face the court on Wednesday.

The four men are 49 year old Ephraim Brown of Gold Spring in Hanover, 39 year-old Billy Williams, 32 year old Dwayne Robinson and Owen Lee all of Westmoreland addresses.

They have been charged with possession of, dealing in and taking steps to export ganja.

They are booked to appear before the Half-Way Tree criminal court.

The Government has extended by 12 months, the time frame for the full implementation of the recommendations for local government reform.

Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Local Government, Robert Montague, speaking at the second in a series of islandwide town-hall meetings recently at the Portmore HEART Academy in St Catherine, said that the 24-month timetable, set aside by Prime Minister Bruce Golding, was not sufficient time to implement all the recommendations.

"The prime minister mandated that we would have 24 months to complete the implementation of all the recommendations that are outstanding. By September of this year, we wanted to complete the implementations (but) we have been overtaken by circumstances and the prime minister has given me an additional 12 months to complete the implementation of the recommendations," Montague said.

He noted, however, that the measures are being put in place and the ones left to be done have to deal with the legal anchoring of local government. The state minister pointed out that local government is not included in the Constitution and one of the proposals is for the entrenchment of the system. He informed that the draft recommendations to facilitate this process have already been completed and are under review by the attorney general.

IN its first public comment on the so-called Cuban Light Bulb saga, the Cuban Government has expressed disappointment with the turn of events that have characterised the scandalised programme.

Cuba's Ambassador to Jamaica, Gisela Garcia Rivera told the Sunday Observer in an interview that the issue surrounding the light bulb affair had left her and the Cuban government troubled.

"I am disturbed about what happened, because it was an important project for the benefit of the Jamaican people," Garcia Rivera said. "In the end when you speak with the Jamaican people about the project, the only thing they remember is the scandal. It is disturbing and very disappointing."

The Cuban diplomat said the objective of the project was to benefit the Jamaican people and her country deemed it "a very serious project".

Cuba maintained a stony silence as the controversy swirled last year over allegations of impropriety on the part of individuals close to the project, under which Jamaica received four million light bulbs in the first phase of a project to distribute bulbs mainly to households across the island.

Among those implicated was Kern Spencer, the former People's National Party state minister in the then Ministry of Mining, Energy and Telecommunications and Member of Parliament for North East St Elizabeth, who had direct responsibility for the programme.

Spencer was arrested in February 2008 and charged with six counts ranging from money laundering, conspiracy to defraud and breaching the Anti-Corruption Act. His former personal assistant, Coleen Wright is facing six related counts. A third person, businessman Rodney Chin was also charged, but the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) dropped the charges and announced that Chin would turn crown witness.

The trial of Spencer and Wright is due to begin on June 22 and last for two weeks, even as Spencer attempts to seek the intervention of the Constitutional Court in his quest to get full disclosure of all forms of communication and contact between the DPP's office and Chin and his lawyer.

Asked in the interview for her comments on the light bulb saga, Garcia Rivera said that Jamaicans had already saved millions of dollars on electricity bills arising from the installation of the bulbs, adding that Cuba's lesson in energy conservation had paid off for the Socialist state.

"In Cuba in the energy field, we would often replace appliances, do things like change bulbs and we saw the effect of that on our economy. In this global environment we are living in and the energy challenges that we faced, we decided to co-operate with Jamaica for the country to save money and we worked hard on that project," the ambassador added.

The Cuban government in the meantime is awaiting the go-ahead from the Jamaican Government to resume distribution of the light bulbs.

"It has been suspended now, but the Government has told us that it wants the programme to continue. Part of Cuba's philosophy is to share the little that we have," Garcia Rivera said.

Fresh from celebrating his team's FA Cup Final victory John Terry has called on Roman Abramovich to bankroll Carlo Ancelotti.

Ribery: wanted by Terry.

Having agreed to leave AC Milan on Sunday night, Ancelotti has been announced as the Blues' new boss, despite rumoured late interest from Real Madrid, and will be interested to hear the thoughts of his new skipper.

Terry believes that the club needs players as well as a manager, and is keen to aim high, asserting that "the likes of Franck Ribery and David Villa are the kind of players we want".

Chelsea ended their two-year trophy drought with their FA Cup success, and Terry wants them to use that success as a springboard to go on and win more trophies:

"We want to attract the best to Chelsea. If we can do that, with successes like the FA Cup and pushing for the Premier League again next season, we're going to get players like Ribery and Villa".

Carradine family takes action on probe, photos

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- David Carradine's family members, dissatisfied with Thai investigators and "profoundly disturbed" by the publication of a forensics photo in a Bangkok tabloid, are seeking help from the FBI and an independent pathologist and have threatened legal action against any media outlet that reprints images of the actor in death.

Keith Carradine has filed reports with the FBI that could lead to the agency's involvement, said Mark Geragos, attorney for the "Kung Fu" actor's half-brother. The FBI confirmed that Carradine's family had contacted the agency.

The family will also seek an independent autopsy by famed forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden to determine whether another person could have been involved, Geragos said. Results of an autopsy performed Friday in Bangkok were not expected for at least three weeks.

A chambermaid found Carradine's body Thursday at Bangkok's Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel. Thai authorities said they have all but ruled out foul play, based on surveillance footage and interviews with hotel staff that indicate no one was in Carradine's room before he died, said Col. Somprasong Yenthuam, who is heading the investigation.

A grainy photo published on the Saturday cover of the tabloid Thai Rath shows a naked body suspended from a clothes bar in a hotel closet, hands apparently bound together above the head and feet on the floor. The face is blacked out and other areas are obscured.

The paper did not indicate the source of the image, but Thai police said they believed it was a picture of Carradine's body taken by a forensics team.

Keith Carradine said in a statement that the family was "profoundly disturbed by the release in Thailand of photographs taken at the scene of David Carradine's death," and threatened legal action against further distribution.

"The family wants it understood that, per attorney Mark Geragos, any persons, publications or media outlets will be fully prosecuted for invasion of privacy and causing severe emotional distress if the photos are published," the statement read.

The actor's family hopes the body will arrive in Los Angeles by Monday, Geragos said, but he did not give specifics.

Geragos said the family decided to intervene because of conflicting information about Carradine's death and a lack of direct information from Thai authorities.

"All we really know is not much more than what the public knows, and that's disturbing," Geragos said.

Agents were checking with the FBI's legal attache at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok to see if Thai authorities "are requesting or would welcome FBI assistance in this matter." FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said the agency generally only gets involved in death investigations overseas if a crime is suspected.

Investigators initially said Carradine's body was found "naked, hanging in a closet," causing them to suspect he had taken his own life. But his family, friends and representatives have said they doubt the 72-year-old actor would have killed himself.

Police later said the actor may have died from accidental suffocation or heart failure after revealing that he was found with a rope tied around his wrist, neck and genitals leading to speculation that Carradine may have engaged in a dangerous form of sex play known as auto-erotic asphyxiation.

But Geragos said he expects the examination by the New York-based Baden, a celebrity among forensic pathologists who frequently consults on high-profile cases, will clear up many unanswered questions.

"It's an amazing thing what a good pathologist can accomplish," Geragos said.

Carradine flew to Thailand last week and began work on a film titled "Stretch" two days before his death. His friends and associates told CNN's Larry King he had a happy marriage, recently bought a new car, and had several films lined up after he finished work in Bangkok.

A martial arts practitioner himself, Carradine was best known for the U.S. TV series "Kung Fu," which aired from 1972-75. He played Kwai Chang Caine, an orphan who was raised by Shaolin monks and fled China for the American West after killing the emperor's nephew in retaliation for the murder of his kung fu master.

Carradine also appeared in more than 100 feature films with such directors as Martin Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman and Hal Ashby. He returned to the top in recent years as the title character in Quentin Tarantino's two-part saga "Kill Bill.

According to media reports, she had been attending the church with a member of the congregation for several Sundays, and suddenly indicated on Saturday (May 30) that she wanted to make a commitment to Christianity, and wanted to get baptized. Help requested to prosecute St James' most-wanted man

A man dubbed 'St James' most wanted' was held by the police earlier this week.

Shane Chennie, wanted for several murders committed over the past three years, was finally held during a police operation after continuously evading the police.

Investigators say Chennie has been fingered for several murders which occurred in the last two months.

Chennie is expected to face a number of identification parades. Head of the St James Police Superintendent Maurice Robinson, is asking residents for their assistance.

"We are asking anyone who can come forward with information to assist us in our investigations to do so. We are now in the process of case preparation, so every bit of information is vital," Superintendent Robinson said.

Shouts of 'Nineties' and 'Gaza' peppered the air as a faceoff between rival factions of the Portmore Empire and the Alliance took centrestage at the Club Amaura in Queens, New York. Bounty Killer and an entourage of men walked up to the backstage area of the club during an energetic performance by Blak Ryno and Jahvinci, cutting short their set before Ryno could deliver the song dissing the Killer. The situation got unbelievably tense and the strong contingent of Gaza followers got up in the face of other men aligned to Bounty Killer before security was able to whisk away both Ryno and Jahvinci before things got out of hand. Hip hop star Ron Browz reportedly left the building without getting a chance to perform. Bounty Killer closed the show. Ryno got huge forwards for Thug Anthem, Dare to Try and Real Stingers, while Jahvinci rocked Amazura with his recent number one hit, Watch Yu Friends, that had the small crowd singing in unison.

From BallerStatus.com -- There might be a recession, but it's not affecting T-Pain one bit and he wants everyone to know it.

The auto-tune king recently copped himself a new chain, and posted photos of the new piece on Twitter, which he said cost a hefty $410,000, 197-karat accessory, weighing in at 10 pounds.

"Dudes and girls, I just wanna give a quick preview of the last chain you'll ever like," Pain wrote. "I'm shuttin' it down."

"Very very real I don't know what fake feel like. $410,000. Hola señor recession proof," he added.

Pain breaks out the ridiculous piece of jewelry at a time when critics and some artists are saying the era of bling is coming to an end.

Guess that doesn't apply to T-Pain.

Boyz look to clear Panama hurdle ahead of Gold Cup

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

Jamaica's Reggae Boyz will continue their preparation for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which kicks off in the United States early next month, when they tackle traditionally tough rivals Panama in a friendly international at the National Stadium, at 6 p.m. tomorrow.

Though yet to have a full strength squad available, with a few European players yet to join the fray, the Reggae Boyz have not exactly set the field on fire in recent games. A mostly local squad played their way to 2-2 draw against Haiti, putting in a much better performance, but could not find the net in a 0-0 draw with El Salvador last weekend.

red card

However, with five players - central midfielders Rodolph Austin, Khari Stephenson, wingers Demar Phillips, Jamal Campbell-Ryce and defender Claude Davis -who missed the last friendly after being out on a red card joining the team this week, the Jamaicans have their strongest squad to date.

Stephenson and Austin are generally expected to replace the pair of Richard Edwards and Steven Morrison, despite splendid performances from the two in the last game. For Reggae Boyz coach John Barnes, who is putting a new 4-4-2 formation on trial, the team is a work in progress but constantly improving.

"It's getting better, more intense. We saw the inclusion of the overseas players and there was a rise in the performances. So I would say things are going ok, and I am really looking forward to tomorrow," Barnes said.

"I have in my head what it is I want to do, who I plan to play, and how I want the team to play," he added.

The Panamanians have always been tough opposition for the Jamaicans. In fact, with three wins, six draws and only one loss to the Boyz, it is the Central Americans who boast the better record.

In 2004, Panama silenced the office with a 2-1 victory that effectively knocked the Jamaicans out of World Cup-qualifying contention. The Reggae Boyz have not beaten them since, drawing their next three encounters, the most recent a 1-1 stalemate at the National Stadium in 2007.

The health ministry yesterday reported two additional imported cases of Influenza A (H1N1), also called swine flu, in Jamaica but said that one of the infected persons has recovered while the other is "recovering satisfactorily".

According to the ministry, both persons live in New York in the United States and had travelled to Jamaica. The ministry did not say when the infected persons were here, offering only that one of them stayed in St Mary and the other in Trelawny.

"Immediate contacts have been interviewed, examined and samples taken," the ministry said in a news release, adding that its surveillance and monitoring team "has still not detected any local spread to date".

Last week, the ministry reported two imported cases in the island from persons who had travelled to New York, but said that there was no need to panic as they had the matter under control.

"The Ministry of Health has been in preparedness mode since we activated our Influenza Pandemic Preparedness Plan on April 27, 2009," the ministry said yesterday. "We have enhanced our laboratory and health services capacity and have been following the WHO's mandate for the phase 5 pandemic alert, including heightened surveillance and early detection and treatment."

The ministry again urged Jamaicans to continue to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves against any possible Influenza infection. "These include frequent hand washing with soap and water, covering mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing and avoiding contact with persons with flu-like symptoms," the ministry said.

They also invited the public to call the ministry's toll free line at 1-888-663-5683 for more information about Influenza A (H1N1).

The police continued to grapple with violent crime yesterday as six violent deaths and a gun attack on a cop were reported in different sections of the island.

Police report that 49-year-old Michael Williams was shot dead during a robbery at a shop in Mike Town, Manchester Friday evening. A 54-year-old woman was also shot and injured in that incident.

In another incident in Manchester, Charles Smith, a 72-year-old resident of Belair district, was stabbed and chopped to death at his home. It was not known who committed that murder.

In Kingston, police found the body of an unidentified man with gunshot wounds at Langard Avenue, Kingston 13 on Friday.

Yesterday morning, Japheth Watson, 43, businessman of Time and Patience district in Linstead, St Catherine was robbed then shot dead by gunmen at his business place, while in Hanover, police found the bodies of two men - Errol Leslie, 51, of Forrest district and 61-year-old Alvin Miller of Chester Castle - in separate incidents.

The police also reported that a corporal assigned to the Motorised Patrol Division was shot and injured early yesterday morning at West Bayfarm Road, Kingston 11.

Police say that about 12:15 am the corporal, who was on his way home, was attacked by a group of men who shot him several times.

The cop ran, but collapsed and was taken to hospital where he was admitted in serious condition.

THE Kingston West police have launched a search for a woman who allegedly shot and injured two other women in the South St Andrew community of Craig Town Thursday night.

Head of the police division, Superintendent Hugh Bish, told the Observer that the alleged female shooter was embroiled in a noisy dispute with the two women before the shooting started.

"They were involved in a feud and she went for a gun and came back and shot the two of them," Bish said.
Both injured women were taken to hospital where they were admitted. Their condition was last night listed as stable.

One of the injured women was said to be the spouse of an influential community leader, popularly referred to as a 'don'.

The police declined to say what was the reason for the dispute between the women, but a source in the community told the Observer that it stemmed from jealousy over the so-called community don.

"They were fighting over man. That's why she get the gun and start to fire shot," the source said.

This is the second woman from the Kingston West Police Division that has come on the police radar for gun crimes in the last three years.

In August 2006, police from the division arrested 17-year-old mother of two, Sasha Payne, and charged her with shooting with intent and illegal possession of ammunition after they searched premises she occupied at Fleet Street, in an area known as 'Southside' in Parade Gardens, and allegedly found bullets.

The shooting charge stemmed from an incident where an 11-year-old boy was shot in the foot, allegedly by Payne.

Police said Payne was the leader of a ruthless gang.
Charges brought against her were thrown out by the court because of a lack of evidence.

Payne reportedly told police that she became involved in a life of crime after being constantly hara**ed by men from her community. She said bad men from her area came to her defence and eventually she joined their ranks and rose to prominence in the criminal underworld.

However, Payne is now said to have "turned her life around" and has been attending church regularly.

This was confirmed by Superintendent Bish and Payne's attorney, Miguel Lorne.

"She is behaving herself and has even started going to church," Lorne, who said he is contacted by the former female gangster at intervals, said.

A New Yorker dubbed the Cape Man was arrested at a Nevada casino Friday for allegedly telling a bank teller last month that he was on a mission to kill the president of the United States. Daniel James Murray, 36, issued the threat at the Zion First National Bank in St. George, Utah, in May, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Barbara Bearnson. At the time he made the comment, United Press International reports, Murray was withdrawing $12,000 in cash from his bank account. Later that day, he returned to the bank and withdrew another $72,000 and closed out the account, according to federal documents. Murray, who has eight guns registered in his name, has ties to New York, Texas, Utah, Nevada and California, reports. Those who knew him in New York said he was known for sporting a cape while strolling around the city.

In this photo released by Brazil's Air Force, officers recover debris belongingRECIFE, Brazil Search ships methodically worked through a "sea of debris" from a doomed Air France jet Sunday, recovering 15 more bodies near the spot where the Airbus A330 is believed to have gone down a week ago.

Two bodies were recovered Saturday, and Brazilian and French ships picked up 15 more Sunday after pilots participating in a grid search reported additional sightings. The bodies have been found in an area about 45 miles (70 kilometers) from where the jet sent out messages signaling electrical failures and loss of cabin pressure.

"We're navigating through a sea of debris," Brazilian Navy Capt. Giucemar Tabosa Cardoso said.

REFILE - CORRECTING NAME AND AFFILIATION OF BRAZILIAN OFFICIAL ...Brazil's military was not releasing detailed information about bodies or debris that have been spotted from the air but not taken aboard ships, after sea trash was mistaken last week for a cargo pallet from the plane, prompting criticism.

Flight 447 disappeared and likely broke up in midair in turbulent weather May 31 during a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris with 228 people aboard all now presumed dead.

The investigation is increasingly focused on whether external instruments on the Airbus A330 may have iced over, confusing speed sensors and leading computers to set the plane's speed too fast or slow a potentially deadly mistake.

The French agency investigating the disaster said airspeed instruments on the plane had not been replaced as the maker had recommended, but cautioned that it was too early to draw conclusions about what role that may have played in the crash.

The agency, BEA, said the plane received inconsistent airspeed readings from different instruments as it struggled in a massive thunderstorm.

France is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash, and will try to recover the plane's black box data and voice recorders, which could reveal why the jet crashed. Brazilian officials are focusing solely on the recovery of victims and plane wreckage.

In Brazil, Air Force Col. Henry Munhoz said nine bodies have been recovered by Brazilian authorities: four men, four women and one that was impossible to identify by gender. He said he did not have information about the genders of the eight bodies recovered by French military helicopters that were transferred to a French ship.

Handout picture released by Brazil's Air Force of an aerial ...The search is focusing on a zone of several hundred square miles (square kilometers) roughly 400 miles (640 kilometers) northeast of the Fernando de Noronha islands off Brazil's northern coast.

Munhoz and Cardoso declined comment on the condition of the recovered bodies, saying that information would be too emotionally painful for relatives.

Authorities also announced that searchers spotted two airplane seats, debris with Air France's logo, and recovered dozens of structural components from the plane. They had already recovered jet wing fragments.

Munhoz said there is "no more doubt" that the wreckage is from Flight 447 following the confusion that broke out with the wooden pallet that turned out not to be from the jet.

Hundreds of personal items belonging to the passengers have been recovered, but Munhoz said authorities would not immediately identify them because relatives of the victims were devastated by an announcement Saturday that a laptop computer and briefcase containing a plane ticket had been found.

"We don't want to cause them more suffering," Munhoz said.

The bodies and plane wreckage were being transported by Brazilian and French ships and should arrive Tuesday at the Brazilian islands of Fernando de Noronha, where the military has set up a staging post for the search operation. From there, remains and debris will be taken to the northeastern coastal city of Recife for identification.

Air France Flight 447 emitted its last signals roughly 400 miles (640 kilometers) northeast of the Fernando de Noronha islands.

Brazilian authorities have refused since the search began to release precise coordinates where they are looking, except to say the area lies southeast of the last jet transmission and could have indicated the pilot was trying to turn around in mid-flight and head to Fernando de Noronha.

In this photo released by Brazil's Air Force, debris belonging ...Munhoz on Sunday would not say how far apart the bodies had been found, and referred comment to French authorities as to whether the locations of the bodies could help determine whether the plane broke up in the air.

The Pentagon has said there are no signs of terrorism. Brazil's defense minister said the possibility was never considered. French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner agreed that there is no evidence supporting a "terrorism theory," but said "we cannot discard that for now."

The U.S. Navy is sending two high-tech devices to French ships that will help them locate the black boxes, a senior U.S. defense official said Saturday.

The Towed Pinger Locators, which can detect emergency beacons to a depth of 20,000 feet (6,100 meters), are being flown to Brazil on Monday with a U.S. Navy team, said the official, who requested anonymity because the decision has not been announced.

The team will deliver the locators to two French tugs that will use them to listen for transmissions from the black box, the official said.

France has appointed Foreign Ministry official Pierre-Jean Vandoorne to act as ambassador to families of the crash victims, the French prime minister's office said in a statement Sunday.

A new mental health centre, complete with three consultation rooms and a waiting area, was officially opened in Greater Portmore last week Thursday.

The facility was constructed with the assistance of the United States military under its project, Beyond The Horizon.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Dr Marion Bullock-Ducasse, director of emergency, disaster management and special services at the Ministry of Health, expressed gratitude to the United States servicemen, who spent the last 10 weeks working on the health centre.

Bullock-Ducasse said construction of the facility and renovation of the existing Greater Portmore Health Centre by the servicemen was a timely gesture and helped to support the Government's drive to renew primary health centre services. She said the self-referral rate at hospitals - 88 per cent - could be significantly reduced. The emergency director said 60 per cent of these patients could be seen at health centres.

committed to rehabilitate

"We have committed to rehabilitate 156 health centres across the island to ensure that persons have access to health facilities at the level of their community and also to ease the burden, which is placed on our public hospitals," Bullock-Ducasse said.

St Catherine Health Services Manager, Godfrey Boyd, told JIS News that Portmore, home to some 300,000 people, had been in dire need of a mental health centre. Prior to this facility, those suffering from mental illnesses attended the neighbouring Greater Portmore Health Centre, where curative services are offered.

The newly built centre will now house the parish's mental illness specialist, including a psychiatrist and a psychologist.

St Catherine Medical Officer of Health Francia Prosper Cheng said 2,132 mentally ill patients were seen at the Greater Portmore Health Centre last year. Already, between January and March this year, more than 500 mental patients have sought assistance.

"This facility is particularly important to us, in that our mental health services are a little crippled due to lack of space, (and) lack of staff, and with a facility like this, at least now we can say we are putting some emphasis on mental health," she asserted.

In terms of renovation work to the Greater Portmore Health Centre, the US servicemen assisted with the repainting of the structure, landscaping of the grounds, repairing the roof and other infrastructural works.

Fraud Squad detectives are investigating a 42-year-old teacher who has been accused of stealing the identity of his former schoolmate from the 1970s.

The accused, Garfield Simpson, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to identity theft.

He confessed to stealing the identity of Richard Forrester. Both men are former students of St George's College in Kingston.

quiz master

According to investigators, Simpson was a member of the St George's College School Challenge Quiz Masters team. He has also coached several Corporate Area schools in quiz competitions. Both Simpson and Forrester have the reputation of being 'math wizards'.

It was said in court that Simpson was arrested last weekend after Forrester's father made a report to the Fraud Squad.

Detectives said Forrester's father was made aware of the identity theft during a conversation with one of Simpson's students who boasted about his teacher.

Forrester, the court heard, is currently studying overseas for his PhD.

Simpson was offered $100,000 bail and is to return to court on June 30. A social enquiry report is to be submitted.

A man who was caught selling seven copies of the recently released hit Angels and Demons, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court to answer to the charge of breaching the Copyright Act.

The accused, Anthony Minto, pleaded not guilty to all five counts.

The court was told that Minto had been seen selling the illegally obtained movies and was arrested and charged.

Minto is to return to court on July 14, when his case will continue.

Lawyersrepresenting two men recently implicated in a 2006 murder in Mount Carey, St James, are expected to apply for bail when the matter returns to the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on June 25.

The court was informed on Wednesday that the main witness in the matter against Devin McPherson, 31, chef, and Rohan Williams, 33, mason, both of Mount Carey, could not be found.

However, the prosecution believes he can be located. The court was also told the prosecution was awaiting DNA result to complete its case file.

Resident Magistrate Vivienne Harris told defence attorneys Roy Fairclough and Morrel Beckford that she would hear bail applications at the next hearing when the court gets information about the witness.

Williams was arrested last December McPherson arrested in April. They were accused of being involved in the shooting death of Anthony Kentish, also of Mount Carey.

Allegations are that about 7:30 p.m. on November 27, 2006, Kentish and a witness were driving towards Williams' house in York Bush, Mount Carey, when they were signalled to stop by a vehicle.

It is said that McPherson was driving the vehicle while Williams and an unidentified man were passengers. Williams and Kentish spoke outside and later both cars were driven to McPherson's home. The witness stood outside the house while the two accused men and Kentish went inside. They were later joined by four other men.

wrong time

Further allegations are that one of the unidentified men told the witness to go inside the house. The witness was told to lie on the floor and was tied up. One of the men allegedly told him he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was asked if anyone knew he was coming to the house.

The court was further informed that the witness was relieved of his car key and cellular phoneand was placed in the trunk of his car. The men also placed Kentish, who appeared to be dead, with his hands bound and lower body wrapped in a plastic bag, inside the trunk beside the witness.

The witness alleged that the men were discussing how they would dispose of him and Kentish.

The men were taken to a section of Wales Pond in St James where it is alleged that the two accused threw Kentish's body into a gully. They then took the witness elsewhere and pushed him down a gully. He managed to free himself and ran.

escaped

He alleges that he heard explosions as he escaped. He reported the matter to the police the following day and took them to Kentish's body. The body had a gunshot wound to the head and bruises to the chest and hands.

The police allege that they went to the homes of both accused men but were unable to locate them. *lo** was allegedly found at McPherson's home.

Mayor of Portmore Keith Hinds said that Portmore is in its final stages of preparation for the hurricane season, which began on Monday, June 1.

"We have cleaned some drains, and I would wish to publicly thank the people from the CHASE fund for the $5.6-million donation to clean drains, " Mayor Hinds said.

The mayor said that the major drains will be cleaned during the month of June. As for the the critical 2 East drain in Greater Portmore, Mayor Hinds said that the National Works Agency (NWA) should clean that drain. The cost of cleaning that drain is in excess of $20 million.

Mayor Hinds said that the emergency response team, which is based at the Emergency Centre at the Portmore Municipal council, is in its final stages of preparation. "Philipa Edmond, disaster coordinator, and her team has put most things in place ... once there is a disaster, then we will be manning our emergency centre 24-hours," Mayor Hinds said.

anticipates more supplies

He added that there is some relief supplies in stock but still anticipates more supplies from the Office of Disaster Preparedness and and Emergency Management (ODPEM). "We are expecting ODPEM to give us supplies as they did last year, and wish to thank Ronald Jackson for their assistance," Mayor Hinds said.

Portmore, he said is vulnerable to hurricanes and possible evacuations will take place if the need arises. "Once there is flooding, we urge people living in the affected areas to comply to the evacuation process, we will be working in collaboration with the Jamaica Urban Transit Company to evacuate persons to shelters in Portmore, or move them to a safe place, possibly the National Arena in Kingston," he said.

California State University in the US has predicted 11 named storms, five becoming hurricanes and two becoming major hurricanes (category three and over on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.

The hurricane season starts on June 1 and ends November 30.

Three post-mortem reports and two witness statements remain outstanding in the case against 27-year-old David Thellwell, who is facing multiple murder charges in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court.

refuse to give statements

On Tuesday, when the matter was mentioned before Resident Magistrate Vivienne Harris, the court was informed that two police officers now on interdiction for an unrelated matter had refused to give statements as to the whereabouts of the accused on the morning of March 3, when four persons were shot and killed at a bar-opening in Glendevon, St James.

Thellwell, who hails from Glendevon, was, however, identified as one of four men who attacked and fatally shot 34-year-old disc jockey Peter 'Funo' Williams; 19-year-old labourer Oniel 'Moses' Black; Adrian 'Condom' Winter and a mentally-ill man known only as 'Kevon'. The court was also informed that the outstanding post-mortems would be available to the investigating team within the week.

Thellwell, who has another case of murder before the St James Circuit Court, has insisted that he has an alibi, which includes members of the police force, for the morning in question. RM Harris had ordered the investigating officers to verify the alibi. However, Thellwell's story is yet to be confirmed. He will remain in custody until June 16 when the case will again be mentioned.

Allegations are that on March 3, Thellwell and three men armed with guns showed up at a bar-opening in the community at 1:25 a.m. and sprayed bullets on the patrons. Witnesses say that Thellwell told his cronies, "Mek sure unno gi dem pure head lick 'cause mi nuh come yah fi kill no woman tonight." The armed men allegedly fled after carrying out their attack.

The Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) of the Jamaica Consta-bulary Force on Thursday arrested two policemen on reasonable suspicion for breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act and conspiracy to commit a criminal offence.

The arrested lawmen are Detective Sergeant Winston Pollack and Constable Tyrone Bryan.

bought passport

Information is that in February of this year the complainant, who is the proprietor of a supermarket and wholesale in St Catherine, paid the detective sergeant $115,000 to obtain a Jamaican passport.

The complainant, who is a foreign national, is the holder of a work permit to work in Jamaica and was not entitled to a Jamaican passport.

Detective Sergeant Pollack reportedly conspired with Constable Tyrone Bryan to whom this money, or some of it, was paid, to employ another individual to secure the passport.

The passport was eventually obtained and handed over to the complainant.

fraud discovered

On Thursday of this week, the complainant visited the passport office where he used the illegally obtained passport as a means of identification in applying for a passport for his daughter. During the process, however, immigration officials discovered that the passport was not genuine.

The Anti-Corruption investigators were subsequently called in and an investigation led to the arrest of the two officers, who are now in custody waiting to be interviewed in the presence of their attorneys.

In a release issued on the matter, the ACB said it was advising members of the public to use official government agencies when seeking to obtain official documents and to report all instances of suspected corruption to the Anti-Corruption Branch.

Illinois man charged with strangling wife, 2 kids

COLUMBIA, Ill. A southwestern Illinois man was expected to plead not guilty to using a cord to strangle his wife and two children earlier this month.

Chris Coleman, 32, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, accused of using a ligature to kill his wife Sheri Coleman, 31, and her two sons, Garett, 11, and 9-year-old Gavin.

Their bodies were found May 5 at the family's home in Columbia, just south of St. Louis.

Coleman, wearing an orange jail jumpsuit with his arms shackled to his waist, refused to answer reporters' questions as police escorted him Tuesday night. He was being held without bond.

Defense attorney William Margulis said his client planned to plead not guilty at a Wednesday morning court appearance.

Police had presented evidence in the case last week to Monroe County State's Attorney Kris Reitz, but Reitz did not file charges pending the results of forensic tests.

"For several days now we have been close," said Jeff Connor of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis. "Tonight there was just some more evidence that came forward and we were able to (show) a more solid case."

Details on a possible motive were not discussed by prosecutors or police on Tuesday.

The day the bodies were found Chris Coleman called police from a gym and asked a Columbia police officer who had investigated prior threats related to the family for a well-being check around 7 a.m., investigators have said.

Chris Coleman told officials that he called the house and no one answered.

Officials have declined to discuss details about the alleged threats. Some neighbors in the well-kept subdivision have also said the Colemans received threatening letters and that their mailbox was tampered with.

Police got to the suburban home that morning before the husband arrived and discovered the bodies. Shortly after, officers had to restrain the visibly upset man in his yard.

Chris Coleman worked security for Joyce Meyer Ministries, a Fenton, Mo.-based evangelical Christian group. Joyce Meyer spokesman Roby Walker said last week that Coleman resigned after an internal inquiry found he failed to follow a ministry policy.

Walker would not say what policy Coleman allegedly violated.
