The comedic dancehall duo Twin of Twins, who have long had a bitter relationship with Beenie Man, have weighed in on the deejays much-debated marital problems with his estranged wife, Michelle 'DAngel' Downer-Davis.

twin_of_twins.jpgThe twins voiced a song last week Tuesday titled Who Catch Heart Attack, which is done on the Stand By Me instrumental, kicks off with a snippet of an actual IRIE FM radio interview where Beenie Man blurts out in exasperation: mi wife have a man ah New York from AprilJesus Christ man, mi neva waan go there.

Then the track segues into a rough paraphrasing of a biblical scripture, Matthew 23:12, them that is humble shall be exalted, and them who exalt themselves shall be abased.

The chorus is simple yet catchy, with someone singing a who as background harmony.

A who ketch heart attack, ah who waan dead?
A who gi weh the pum pum and hurt up the dread?
   LISTEN
A who go pon Onstage ah bawl to Winfred?

The inevitable and expected gal clown disses then show up in the verses, and the childish show off bring disgrace assertions. However, the twins at their brilliant acerbic best with choice lines like use her spite Killa, now the ting lose taste and Beenie tek back the draws and two pillowcase.

Patrick Curly Lox Gaynor, one of the twins said , Because there is a general feeling in the people that the twins are right and we have been predicting the outcome from volume six and seven of our CDs, everything we say has come to pass, like the whole spiting of Bounty Killer and it has manifested itself

The twin went on to say that the truth doesnt necessarily mean that you hate somebody, but it is public domain, people should be allowed to speak about it.

Its like a story and we have covered the story, thats our coverage, said Curly Lox. We put pen to paper this is the result and it's doing wonderful.

At one point, the Twins pretend to empathize with the line, she diss Killa, she will diss yuh, wipe the tears from your eye, but alas, it is only a setup for a bigger diss later on in the song when they say, Me? I dont sorry fi di dread, him threaten my life and seh me fi dead.

The twins also made reference to the recent public squabble between Beenie Man and DAngel over the ownership of the record label, M.A.F.I.A House, Seh him own the House then how come she evict him?

They even bring up the accusation that Beenie Man had threatened their lives. Last year, the Twins were largely sidelined for several months after an incident where they were soundly booed at Bling Dawg Summer Jam in Portland by dancehall fans after they attempted to diss the Doctor at a stage show in eastern Jamaica.

What happen to the man and him wife, indeed!

After three days in intensive care Oluchi was breathing on her own A two-year-old girl has made an almost complete recovery after spending nearly 20 minutes at the bottom of a pool. Scans showed Oluchi Nwaubani had been starved of oxygen for some 18 minutes - three times longer than the brain can usually survive - in Bromley, London. Despite being warned that even if she were to live she may never walk or talk again, her parents say she can run around and say "what she wants". Doctors say while the case is highly unusual, it is not unprecedented. Prompt response by both ambulance and helicopter to the scene of the accident in south London last September may well have made the difference between life and death. Oluchi was rapidly airlifted to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel before being transferred for specialist care to Great Ormond Street - after three days she was breathing again on her own. FROM VICTORIA DERBYSHIRE More from BBC Radio 5 live As well as the rapid, high level of intensive care Oluchi received, her youth c****ined with the cold water may also have helped her beat the odds. "Contrary to popular belief small children are quite strong - they have very healthy hearts, lungs and brains," says Ffion Davies, an A&E consultant and member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. "On top of that, the cold water will have slowed down the body's metabolism and so you can actually survive quite a long period without oxygen." Children cool faster than adults because they have a higher ratio of surface area to weight than adults. Keeping cold Oluchi's case may be unusual but there have been several such cases of both children and adults surviving prolonged periods under water in recent years. Contrary to popular belief small children are quite strong - they have very healthy hearts, lungs and brains Ffion Davies A&E consultant Last year, a 35-year-old London architect was found floating in the water off Cape Town: when dragged to shore he was not breathing and had no pulse. While it is not clear how long John Deeks spent under water, it is thought he was without a pulse for as long as an hour. Cool water is thought to have played a part in his survival - the water he was swimming in was likely to have been around 15C (60F). There have also been a string of cases documented in the US. Oluchi's case is put into perspective by that of Michelle Funk, who was also two when she was submerged in a cold Utah river for nearly 70 minutes in 1986. Doctors published an article on her progress in 1988, by which time she had essentially returned to normal. Three months on from the accident, Oluchi's parents are hopeful of a full recovery. They say movement is currently the main problem. "Nevertheless she is now on her feet - she's walking, she's running, and her speech is very good," says her mother, Tayo. "She's all over the place. You can't keep her down."

Ohio teen sentenced in parking lot noose attack

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio A central Ohio teenager accused of putting a noose around a Hispanic boy's neck and dragging him in a parking lot has been sentenced to 10 days in jail.

The 18-year-old was sentenced Wednesday in juvenile court in Mount Vernon, a city of 15,000 residents an hour's drive northeast of Columbus. He dropped his original plea of not guilty and pleaded no contest to ethnic intimidation.

A charge of aggravated menacing was dropped.

Seventeen-year-old Robert Cantu says in May 2008 he was dragged from a sidewalk to a parking lot with the noose wrapped around his neck by a group of teenagers shouting racial slurs. He says the teens threatened to hang him before a bystander intervened.

His family says it plans to sue the city, dubbed the state's Most Livable Community in 1994

A Denver police officer has been suspended after allegedly brandishing his gun at a McDonald's restaurant in Aurora after his order took too long to fill.

Aurora police confirmed the CBS4 investigation saying the incident occurred May 21 at the McDonald's at 18181 East Hampden Avenue.

A spokesperson for the Aurora Police Department said they plan to present the case -- now classified as a felony menacing incident -- to the Arapahoe County District Attorney's Office Thursday for possible filing of criminal charges.

Sources familiar with the case, and the fast food worker's account of what happened, say two off-duty Denver police officers placed an order from their car in the early morning hours of May 21. But once at the drive through window, the employee said the men became agitated and angry at how long their food was taking. The men thought they were being ignored, according to contacts familiar with the worker's account. The male clerk then said one of the officer's flashed his police badge and pointed a pistol through the drive through window in a threatening manner, before driving off without paying.

Both officers are assigned to Denver International Airport although only one has been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending the outcome of the case.

60 deejays turn up for Heineken Green Synergy Kingston auditions

By Dave Lindo

Friday, June 19, 2009

The Heineken Green Synergy 2009 auditions are now in full swing as the highly-rated DJ competition in the Caribbean circles the island to find the brightest new deejays in the country.

(From left) DJ Nico, DJ Shine Head, Donovan Dacres, DJ Jigga and Kurt Riley at MoBay's audition.

The first audition, held at Peppers Night Club in Kingston on Sunday, June 14, saw a big turnout of 60 aspiring deejays on their quest to pocket the over two million dollars up for grabs this year. There was also a huge throng of spectators, including prominent figures from the music fraternity.

All 60 deejays tried their best to impress the judges Collin Hinds and Kurt Riley from FAME FM and DJ Sunshine from Irie Fm.

From the lot, 16 got the 'green card' from the judges to advance. A big surprise on the day was the awesome display by the lone female, DJ Naz, who coolly showed her male counterparts just how it is done with some 'wicked' mixing while unleashing some 'tough' selections.

DJ Naz was happy about her performance. "I was nervous at first, but as I played I started to enjoy myself. I feel good to know that I was selected," she said.

The DJ of three years said that she will be working on her mix CD, which all Deejays who advance have to submit. The CDs will be reviewed by a panel of judges.

A total of 16 Deejays will be selected and they will be revealed at the launch of the competition on July 3 at the Barbican playing field in Kingston.

Also advancing was last year's quarter-finalist, DJ Shine, who looked in good form while displaying some crisp mixing. Shines was feeling very confident "I am going for it this year. I am more confident this time around as I have been practising. I have learnt a whole lot from the experience last year," he said.

The Mandeville leg was just as big as Kingston's with the Shock Wave Sports Bar and Club packed with DJs and onlookers.

They were judged by Collin Hinds and Kurt Riley as well as Pink Panther from Black Kat, the reigning World Clash Champion.

With the Main Events crew working overtime in creating a top quality production for the competition, the stage was set for a wonderful day.

Out of 52 entrants in Mandeville, 15 got the green card. From the group, a young entrant by the name of DJ Chungy, who was entering the competition for the second time, was very impressive. The young DJ displayed some breath-taking mixes and awesome scratches, including scratching with his back turned.

Chungy by far is the most talented Deejay seen up to that point, as described by Kurt Riley. "Chungy without a doubt is Green Synergy material."

Those who impressed also were DJ Pose from Xclamation Disco, DJ Nile, former Black Kat selector, and DJ Haro, who showed much promise.

The next stop was Tuesday, June 16, in Montego Bay at the hip spot Margaritaville. With the rain pouring throughout the day, a total of 37 entrants braved the weather to show their talent.

Interestingly three out of five previous winners are from the western Jamaica - DJ Slim, DJ Nico and DJ Jigga.

Not much talent was seen at this audition with only 7 getting the green card from the judging panel which, this time, also included the veteran disc jockey, Donovan Dacres. However DJ Shine Head, resident DJ from Margaritaville, entered and entertained with an electrifying display on the turn tables. Without a doubt, Shine Head is one to watch as the competition progresses. DJ Haro from Hedonism also showed promise, as well as DJ Alroy from Full Blast sound.

At press time Wednesday, June 17, 2009 the audition was under way at Margaritaville in Ocho Rios. It will be at the La Best Night Club in Portland today from 11 am to 5 pm each day.

The event is being captured for television by the Winford William's run Caribbean Entertainment Production team which will be shown on TVJ as well as on On Stage on CVM.

Beyoncé has sought to have unofficial street vendors banned from selling merchandise outside her upcoming concerts in New York, it has been reported.
The 'Halo' singer has filed a federal lawsuit ahead of two shows at Madison Square Gardens this weekend, according to TMZ.

Groups of illegal sellers have been accused of trading pirate CDs and other merchandise in "the vicinity" of a number of Beyoncé's past concerts.

The star is currently on her third world tour, which started in the spring and also includes dates in Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania.

Beyoncé recently offered thousands of cut-price tickets to a number of her live shows

The singer, 25, was walking down an alley on her way to tape a TV Guide segment when someone ran behind her and stole everything she was holding including an pricey Zac Posen dress. (Luckily, her beloved teacup Maltese named Ginger escaped unharmed, the website reports.)

Aubrey is doing well, her rep tells Us. She is just a bit shaken up from the days chaos and is grateful that she and those around her were unharmed.

No arrests have been made.

The Mexican navy smelled something fishy and their intuition paid off. They found nearly a ton of cocaine hidden inside a shipment of frozen sharks.

Navy inspectors at the southeastern port of Progreso, in Yucatan state, on Tuesday detected an anomaly in two shipping containers during a routine X-ray, according to a navy news release.

The inspectors zeroed in on a shipment of sharks. Upon slitting one of the frozen fish open, they found black bags containing rectangular packets filled with cocaine.

In all, authorities recovered 870 packages of cocaine, weighing 894 kilograms (about 1,967 pounds), the navy reported Wednesday.

In recent years, Mexico and the United States have stepped up drug enforcement efforts, pushing more of the drug trade to sea routes and forcing drug smugglers to find more creative ways to hide their contraband.
The cargo was aboard the freight ship Dover Strait and had been loaded in Costa Rica, the navy said.

MINNEAPOLIS A replay of the nation's only file-sharing case to go to trial has ended with the same result a Minnesota woman was found to have violated music copyrights and must pay huge damages to the recording industry.

A federal jury ruled Thursday that Jammie Thomas-ra**et willfully violated the copyrights on 24 songs, and awarded recording companies $1.92 million, or $80,000 per song.

Thomas-ra**et's second trial actually turned out worse for her. When a different federal jury heard her case in 2007, it hit Thomas-ra**et with a $222,000 judgment.

The new trial was ordered after the judge in the case decided he had erred in giving jury instructions.

Thomas-ra**et sat glumly with her chin in hand as she heard the jury's finding of willful infringement, which increased the potential penalty. She raised her eyebrows in surprise when the jury's penalty of $80,000 per song was read.

Body for sale

STARLEFT_1_PCHZITellPasNM.jpg

Dear Pastor,

I am 30 and a mother of six children. I love them so much and I don't want to hurt them but I have a deep, dark secret. I have been selling my body for the past five years just to satisfy all their needs.

I am doing this just for them but I want to stop. Their fathers are not supporting them. I have prayed every night to stop but I don't want my children to suffer. I sell to over 20 different men each night and I have 15 loyal customers.

Please don't think that this lifestyle is something I want to do but I cannot let my children suffer. I should suffer, not them.

Pastor, I really need your help and advice.

Dear M.,

I am sorry to hear that, because of need, you have been engaging in prostitution. I do believe you. I wish you could find yourself a job to support yourself and your children. The question is: "What can you do?" And where can you find a job? I wish you had mentioned in what area you are trained, so that readers would have been in a position to offer you a job.

I am amazed that you can have 20 clients in one night. Callers on the 'Dear Pastor' show have said that prostitutes have lowered their price because of the economic climate. Men are paying very little to prostitutes for sex. So, I suppose you are not making big bucks these days. I am very sorry for you. But I want to assure you that I don't condemn you. I suggest, however, that, during the daytime when you are not practising your profession, you go to school and learn a skill.

My prayers are with you. Continue to pray that God will make a way for you.

Pastor

Dutch police have arrested twin brothers on suspicion of robbery after their alleged victim spotted a picture of them following him on Google's Street View map application, a spokesman said on Friday.

Paul Eidanus, a police spokesman in the town of Groningen, said he believed the case was the first time Street View images had been used in a Dutch criminal investigation. 'For us, it is unique,' he said.

A 14-year-old boy told police last September he had been robbed of 165 ($230) and his cell phone after two men dragged him off his bicycle in Groningen, 180 kilometers (110 miles) northeast of the capital, Amsterdam.

The victim called again in March after seeing an image of himself and two men he believed were his attackers on Street View, police said in a statement.

Eidanus said police asked Google for the original photo because people's faces are blurred on Street View.

'You must tell Google clearly why you want them,' Eidanus said of the photo request. In this case, 'the photo could provide an important contribution to solving a crime.'

The company complied, and a robbery squad detective immediately recognized one of the twins.

Prosecutors will now decide whether to charge the suspects, whose identities were not released.

A spokesman for Google in the Netherlands did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

A man was so intent on robbing a motorist that he unwittingly followed her in his car straight to a sheriff's department, where he was arrested.

The 26-year-old man from Michigan, Illinois, was arrested and remains jailed on charges of attempted armed robbery and possession of a stolen vehicle, the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Authorities say the woman called police saying a man had tried to rob her at gunpoint when he pulled alongside her to ask for directions. She had her three children in the car with her.

Investigators say a dispatcher guided the woman to a nearby sheriff's department while the suspect followed, realising too late where she was headed. He was arrested a short time later.

Thomas Parkin dresses up as his mother, and how he usually looks (inset)

A man has been charged in a bizarre plot to collect his deceased mother's benefits by impersonating her.

Irene Prusik died six years ago, but in April, someone showed up at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Brooklyn, New York, to renew her driver's license.

The explanation given by prosecutors rivals the Hitchc**k classic "Psycho": It was her son, in drag.

Thomas Parkin, 49, was charged in the plot to impersonate his deceased mother so he could collect $117,000 in government benefits.

This guy is not stupid. This guy is very smart, and I think his schemes were absolutely brilliant

He and the man accused of being his accomplice, Mhilton Rimolo, pleaded not guilty to grand larceny, criminal impersonation and other charges.

Both men were ordered held on $1million bail.

Their lawyers did not immediately respond to phone messages left.

District Attorney Charles Hynes said the scam showed Parkin was a smart man.

"This guy is not stupid. This guy is very smart, and I think his schemes were absolutely brilliant," said Mr Hynes.

Authorities claim that following his arrest, Parkin told them that because he held Mrs Prusik when she breathed her last breath, "I am my mother."

Parkin, who lived with his mother, was accused of hatching the scheme after she passed away in 2003 at age 73.

He concealed the death by falsifying her death certificate, then collected $52,000 from her 700 dollar-a-month Social Security cheques over the next six years, prosecutors said.

Authorities say Parkin also got another $65,000 in rent subsidies by falsely claiming he had a disability and that his mother was still alive and was his landlord.

Parkin used his friend Rimolo to pose as the mother's nephew when going to cash cheques and do other business, prosecutors said.

A security camera photo from the DMV office shows a frail-looking Parkin in a wig and dark glasses, Rimolo by his side, as he fills out paperwork.

The ruse began to unravel amid a dispute over the mother's home, which was sold at foreclosure in 2003.

Parkin challenged the purchase by suing the new owner on his mother's behalf so he wouldn't be evicted.

As the property dispute dragged out, both sides eventually contacted the district attorney to accuse each other of fraud.

Stephen McGregor is known for his many hit productions, but of late the producer has been adding his voice to a few tracks.

The airwaves have been burning up with a few songs that feature McGregor. Some of the songs are Vybz Kartel's Careful, Bramma's Some People, and Chino's Protected. But the first single on which he used his voice was Chino's I Know. On these songs, he usually does the chorus.

However, the son of revered reggae singer Freddie McGregor said this should not be mistaken for him wanting to break through as a full-time artiste.

"I don't do it to try an' buss," McGregor told THE STAR. "Is just to put all the focus on the artistes."

my personality

He added: "That's how I started out. Originally, I used to DJ when I was younger. A nuh my personality dat. I don't like all the attention and focus being on me."

The singing, he said, started because he does demos for different songs when he creates his rhythms. He usually gives these demos to different artistes. But for the songs he is featured on, the artistes liked how he sounded.

"It's just me experimenting," McGregor said. He could not say if he would be on anymore tracks as he has many ideas.

"It's not a plan thing. If I find certain ideas that fit certain artistes, I will do it," he told THE STAR.

Still focused on producing, McGregor will release the 'Fitness' rhythm next week. This summer rhythm will feature 'usual suspects' Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Chino, Laden, Blak Ryno and Bramma.

"It's the dancehall rhythm for the summer; it crazy crazy. Fitness 'cause the girl dem fi haffi stay fit," McGregor said, laughing.

For the summer, he will also release singles from Big Ship artistes Chino and Laden, as well as other artistes such as Mavado, Elephant Man and Bramma.

With her own designs, as well as some from other local and international collections, dancehall artiste Spice will launch Spicey Couture.

On Thursday, she will launch the store, which will be located in Mall Plaza, St Andrew. It will feature local designs from Spice's own collection - Spicey Couture, as well as White Skyy and Romeich Wear.

"Not a lot of people realise how talented Jamaican designers are. They just think as long as it's something from abroad, it has to be good and sometimes that's not the case. Sometimes, all these brands have going for them is the name and nothing else. So when I decided to open the store, endorsing Jamaican and Caribbean designs, it was something I had to do. We are talented people and it's time Jamaicans started to embrace their own," Spice told THE STAR.

international designs

However, there will be international designs at the store, there will also be collections likeLex Perry, Nzinga,Coogi, Ozzy Osbourne's Affliction, Beyoncé's House of Dereon, Nelly's Apple Bottoms, DKNY, Calvin Klein, True Religion and sneakers from Pastry. Spice also said she is trying to source outfits from Caribbean designers.

Spice, real name Grace Hamilton, said she decided to start her own collection because she has been designing for herself for a long time.

"I am the one who comes up with the designs and there is someone who sews the pieces. I've been doing itsince I was young. Whenever I needed to go to a party,I would think of the pieces and have them made," Spice said.

"So in truth, people have been seeing me in my own designs for a really long time. But after a while, I figured, why don'tI do it for myself instead of bringing it to people and then have them say that they are the designers? That didn't make sense, so here I am, launching Spicey Couture."

She said her line will cater to women only. There are T-shirts and semi-formal outfits.

little bit edgy

But one thing that Spice promises is difference.

"The clothes are classy and a little bit edgy.If it's one thing I know, it's thatwomen don't like going to thedance and seeing a next girl in the sameclothes. So with 'Spicey Couture' all thedesigns are different. Once you buy it, you know you won't see anyone else in it," Spice said.

She said she would love to add some children designs to the line but that would come later. In addition, further expansion of the Spicey Couture line will be determined by the feedback locally. At that point, Spice will look at the possibility of taking the line to a wider market.

Nonetheless, Spice promises affordability at Spicey Couture.

"We are trying to make items as affordable as possible, because we are trying to cater to everyone. Simply because the designs in the store are high fashion doesn't mean they should be too expensive," she said.

Spicey Couture is here!

This Thursday, June 18, dancehall artiste Spice will launch her clothing line and store Spicey Couture in Mall Plaza, Half-Way Tree.

The store will provide the latest fashions from some of Jamaica's top designers, including White Skyy (often worn by Beenie Man) and Romeich Wear (often worn by Bounty Killer) - while internationalbrands will include Pastry, DKNY, House of Dereon (Beyoncé), Affliction (Ozzy Osbourne),and lots more.

Well, all this could be yours for less. Simplytake a copyof the STAR published between Monday, June 15and Saturday, June 20 and get 10% off any item you buy in the store. The person who buys the most items will win an iPhone.

Pardon the cliche, but it's one of the holiest of Holy Grails of technology: Wireless power. And while early lab experiments have been able to "beam" electricity a few feet to power a light bulb, the day when our laptops and cell phones can charge without having to plug them in to a wall socket still seems decades in the future.

Nokia, however, has taken another baby step in that direction with the invention of a cell phone that recharges itself using a unique system: It harvests ambient radio waves from the air, and turns that energy into usable power. Enough, at least, to keep a cell phone from running out of juice.

While "traditional" (if there is such a thing) wireless power systems are specifically designed with a transmitter and receiver in mind, Nokia's system isn't finicky about where it gets its wireless waves. TV, radio, other mobile phone systems -- all of this stuff just bounces around the air and most of it is wasted, absorbed into the environment or scattered into the ether. Nokia picks up all the bits and pieces of these waves and uses the collected electromagnetic energy to create electrical current, then uses that to recharge the phone's battery. A huge range of frequencies can be utilized by the system (there's no other way, really, as the energy in any given wave is infinitesimal). It's the same idea that Tesla was exploring 100 years ago, just on a tiny scale.

Mind you, harvesting ambient electromagnetic energy is never going to offer enough electricity to power your whole house or office, but it just might be enough to keep a cell phone alive and kicking. Currently Nokia is able to harvest all of 5 milliwatts from the air; the goal is to increase that to 20 milliwatts in the short term and 50 milliwatts down the line. That wouldn't be enough to keep the phone alive during an active call, but would be enough to slowly recharge the cell phone battery while it's in standby mode, theoretically offering infinite power -- provided you're not stuck deep underground where radio waves can't penetrate.

Nokia says it hopes to commercialize the technology in three to five years.

Eva Longoria is widely known as a sexy woman. This time she made another hot appearance with her pictures taken for GQ Mexico.

In the photos which showed most of her skin, Eva covered her body only with black lingerie. The "Desperate Housewives" star also wore black high-heels which made her looked more attractive. She, moreover, seemed having hair extension. As if it's not seducing enough, in some photos Eva was seen playing with rope.

Recently, Eva Longoria and husband, Tony Parker, spent summer holiday with a trip to Europe. She was seen in some places such as St. Tropez, where she was snapped wearing bikini on a yacht, and Paris to watch the French Open. She then took a flight to Marbella and met her pals, celebrity hairdresser Ken Paves and Bruce Willis's ex-lover, Maria Bravo.

Omar Johnson, more popularly known as Magnum Kings & Queens of Dancehall competition winner Poor & Boasy, reportedly turned himself in to the Half Way Tree Police this morning. He had been on-the-run and wanted by the police since an incident almost two weeks ago, where he was accused of stabbing a man several times. It is expected that the Half-Way-Tree police will be turning him over to their counterparts in Clarendon, the parish where the alleged incident occurred.

Outside the courtroom, she called the $1.92 million figure "kind of ridiculous" but expressed resignation over the decision.

"There's no way they're ever going to get that," said Thomas-ra**et, a 32-year-old mother of four from the central Minnesota city of Brainerd. "I'm a mom, limited means, so I'm not going to worry about it now."

Her attorney, Kiwi Camara, said he was surprised by the size of the judgment. He said it suggested that jurors didn't believe Thomas-ra**et's denials of illegal file-sharing, and that they were angry with her.

Camara said he and his client hadn't decided whether to appeal or pursue the Recording Industry Association of America's settlement overtures.

Cara Duckworth, a spokeswoman for the RIAA, said the industry remains willing to settle. She refused to name a figure, but acknowledged Thomas-ra**et had been given the chance to settle for $3,000 to $5,000 earlier in the case.

"Since Day One we have been willing to settle this case and we remain willing to do so," Duckworth said.

In closing arguments earlier Thursday, attorneys for both sides disputed what the evidence showed.

An attorney for the recording industry, Tim Reynolds, said the "greater weight of the evidence" showed that Thomas-ra**et was responsible for the illegal file-sharing that took place on her computer. He urged jurors to hold her accountable to deter others from a practice he said has significantly harmed the people who bring music to everyone.

Defense attorney Joe Sibley said the music companies failed to prove allegations that Thomas-ra**et gave away songs by Gloria Estefan, Sheryl Crow, Green Day, Journey and others.

"Only Jammie Thomas's computer was linked to illegal file-sharing on Kazaa," Sibley said. "They couldn't put a face behind the computer."

Sibley urged jurors not to ruin Thomas-ra**et's life with a debt she could never pay. Under federal law, the jury could have awarded up to $150,000 per song.

U.S. District Judge Michael Davis, who heard the first lawsuit in 2007, ordered up a new trial after deciding he had erred in instructions to the jurors. The first time, he said the companies didn't have to prove anyone downloaded the copyrighted songs she allegedly made available. Davis later concluded the law requires that actual distribution be shown.

His jury instructions this time framed the issues somewhat differently. He didn't explicitly define distribution but said the acts of downloading copyrighted sound recordings or distributing them to other users on peer-to-peer networks like Kazaa, without a license from the owners, are copyright violations.

This case was the only one of more than 30,000 similar lawsuits to make it all the way to trial. The vast majority of people targeted by the music industry had settled for about $3,500 each. The recording industry has said it stopped filing such lawsuits last August and is instead now working with Internet service providers to fight the worst offenders.

In testimony this week, Thomas-ra**et denied she shared any songs. On Wednesday, the self-described "huge music fan" raised the possibility for the first time in the long-running case that her children or ex-husband might have done it. The defense did not provide any evidence, though, that any of them had shared the files.

The recording companies accused Thomas-ra**et of offering 1,700 songs on Kazaa as of February 2005, before the company became a legal music subscription service following a settlement with entertainment companies. For simplicity's sake the music industry tried to prove only 24 infringements.

Reynolds argued Thursday that the evidence clearly pointed to Thomas-ra**et as the person who made the songs available on Kazaa under the screen name "tereastarr." It's the same nickname she acknowledged having used for years for her e-mail and several other computer accounts, including her MySpace page.

Reynolds said the copyright security company MediaSentry traced the files offered by "tereastarr" on Kazaa to Thomas-ra**et's Internet Protocol address the online equivalent of a street address and to her modem.

He said MediaSentry downloaded a sample of them from the shared directory on her computer. That's an important point, given Davis' new instructions to jurors.

Although the plaintiffs weren't able to prove that anyone but MediaSentry downloaded songs off her computer because Kazaa kept no such records, Reynolds told the jury it's only logical that many users had downloaded songs offered through her computer because that's what Kazaa was there for.

Sibley argued it would have made no sense for Thomas-ra**et to use the name "tereastarr" to do anything illegal, given that she had used it widely for several years.

He also portrayed the defendant as one of the few people brave enough to stand up to the recording industry, and he warned jurors that they could also find themselves accused on the basis of weak evidence if their computers are ever linked to illegal file-sharing.

"They are going to come at you like they came at 'tereastarr,'" he said.

Steve Marks, executive vice president and general counsel of the Recording Industry Association of America, estimated earlier this week that only a few hundred of the lawsuits remain unresolved and that fewer than 10 defendants were actively fighting them.

The companies that sued Thomas-ra**et are subsidiaries of all four major recording companies, Warner Music Group Corp., Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group, EMI Group PLC and Sony Corp.'s Sony Music Entertainment.

The recording industry has blamed online piracy for declines in music sales, although other factors include the rise of legal music sales online, which emphasize buying individual tracks rather than full albums.

An inquest into the death of Mrs Cox, who took the drug voluntarily, was held last week and a coroner recorded a verdict of misadventure.

The drug was administered by her elder sister, Dr Yvonne Pambakian.

Both sisters worked for a pharmaceutical company, Amro Biotech, set up by their mother, Dr Arpi Matossian-Rogers.

Amro Biotech had spent more than £3 million developing the drug, known as "B71", to treat diabetes, cancer and was even hoped to reverse ageing.

At the time of Mrs Cox's death, it was still being tested in trials in the Netherlands.

Some console fans will spare no expense to show their loyalty to their chosen brand, but we're guessing the $2,500 price tag of these one-of-a-kind Xbox-themed sneakers will make even the most committed Microsoft devotee think twice.

The custom shoes -- which aren't endorsed by Microsoft or Nike -- are handmade by Sole Junkie, a California-based artist who specializes in customized sneakers. And they're not the most expensive ones he's ever made. "I have made shoes with 22k gold and diamonds on them," he told us in an interview. "I look at my creations as functional art...not just ordinary sneakers."

That would be functional in shoe terms, not in a gaming sense. Although you might hope that the $2,500 price tag would buy you cool Xbox interactivity, there's no hidden hard drive or controller functionality. Instead, the Xbox logos light up, courtesy of embedded fiber optics and a hidden switch.

According to Sole Junkie's eBay auction, "These are an exclusive pair...only one of its kind. Patent leather back with embedded fiber optic wiring in the shape of the XBOX logo. Battery placement is in the tongue as well as on and off switch that has 2 settings: Strobe or Constant light functions. Gradient lime swoosh faded to black. The toe is painted in a surreal Tiger Camouflage with accents of lime and bright green. These are a men's size 11."

Will they sell? He seems confident. "I have had offers already. They mention the beauty and artwork in it, not the price tag. Don't know how serious the buyers are so far."

But surprisingly, many Xbox fans aren't overjoyed at his work. "The video game community hates the price and the fact I may have taken a beloved iconic gaming system and butchered it," he told us. "On the other hand, I've had very positive responses from others...more than negative ones."

So, $2,500 shoes that do nothing? We'll pass. But if your collection of gaming memorabilia isn't complete without this unique footwear, don't let us stop you from jumping in.

Who's better lyrically?

In this undated photo released by Korean Central News Agency via Korea News Service in Tokyo Sunday, June 14, 2009, North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, center, inspects the command of the 7th Infantry Division of the Korean People's Army at an undisclosed location in North Korea. (AP Photo/Korean Central News Agency via Korea News Service) SEOUL, South Korea - South Korea's president ordered his top security officials Sunday to deal "resolutely and squarely" with new North Korean warnings of a nuclear war on the eve of his U.S. visit. In Washington, Vice President Joe Biden said "God only knows" what North Korea wants from the latest showdown.

President Lee Myung-bak travels to Washington on Monday for talks with President Barack Obama that are expected to focus on the North's rogue nuclear and missile programs.

The trip comes after North Korea's Foreign Ministry threatened war with any country that stops its ships on the high seas under new sanctions approved by the U.N. Security Council in response to its May 25 nuclear test.

It also vowed Saturday to "weaponize" all its plutonium and acknowledged a long-suspected uranium enrichment program for the first time. Both plutonium and uranium are key ingredients of atomic b****s.

A commentary published Saturday in the North's state-run Tongil Sinbo weekly claimed the U.S. was deploying a vast number of nuclear weapons in South Korea and Japan.

North Korea "is completely within the range of U.S. nuclear attack and the Korean peninsula is becoming an area where the chances of a nuclear war are the highest in the world," it said.

Kim Yong-kyu, a spokesman at the U.S. military command in Seoul, denied the allegation, saying the U.S. no longer has nuclear b****s in South Korea. U.S. tactical nuclear weapons were removed from South Korea in 1991 as part of arms reductions following the Cold War.

President Lee summoned his top security ministers Sunday and ordered them to "resolutely and squarely cope" with the North's threats, his office said. The Unification Ministry, responsible for ties with the North, issued a statement demanding that it stop inflaming tension and resume talks with the South.

"North Korea should give up its nuclear program ... and stop any kind of military threat," it said. "We urge North Korea to respond in a sincere dialogue to improve South-North Korean relations."

The new U.N. sanctions approved Friday are aimed at depriving the North of the financing used to build its nuclear program. They also authorize searches of North Korean ships suspected of transporting illicit ballistic missile and nuclear materials.

Biden told NBC's "Meet the Press" that it's crucial that the U.S. and other nations "make sure those sanctions stick."

North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Il, reportedly had a stroke 10 months ago and analysts believe there may be a plan in place to name his inexperienced 26-year-old son, Kim Jong Un, as the future leader.

"God only knows what he wants," Biden said of Kim. "There's all kinds of discussions. Whether this is about succession, wanting his son to succeed him. Whether or not he's looking for respect. Whether or not he really wants a nuclear capability to threaten the region. ... We can't guess his motives.

"We just have to deal with the reality that a North Korea that is either proliferating weapons and or missiles, or a North Korea that is using those weapons ... is a serious danger and threat to the world, and particularly East Asia," the vice president said.

Lee Sang-hyun, an analyst at the Sejong Institute, a South Korean security think tank, said he believes the North will continue to conduct nuclear tests until it masters the technology to mount nuclear warheads on missiles and will give credit for it to Kim Jong Un.

"Kim Jong Un's status is still unstable. Kim Jong Il appears to be trying to give the son a powerful means to strengthen his succession," Lee said. "Kim Jong Un could also get the credit for nuclear weapons development."

North Korea is already believed to have enough plutonium for at least half a dozen atomic b****s.

North Korea says its nuclear program is a deterrent against the U.S., which it accuses of plotting to invade and topple its regime. Washington, which has 28,500 troops in South Korea, has repeatedly denied having any such plans.

Police want Poor and Boasy

Oh Oh, Poor and Boasy is a wanted man!

Poor and Boasy, real name Omar Johnson, has found himself on the wrong side of the law, as he is accused of being involved in a stabbing incident which occurred last week.

THE WEEKEND STAR has learnt that Johnson is now wanted in connection with the stabbing of Lindon Clarke, a resident of Aenon Town, Clarendon, where the incident allegedly occurred.

Checks with the Spaldings police confirmed that a report was made on Saturday, after which an effort was made to nab Johnson.

A policeman said Johnson was expected to attend a dance which was being held in Spaldings, also in the parish.

no-show

The efforts of the police were, however, thwarted, as Johnson reportedly did not turn up.

Corporate Area police stations have since been briefed, the policeman added.

Clarke, who contacted THE WEEKEND STAR, said he was stabbed about 1 a.m. last Friday, while at the Miss Aenon Town contest at the Aenon Town All-Age School.

While playing a game of cards, Clarke said he got into a heated argument with Poor and Boasy.

"First him seh 'a wah do yuh country bwoy?' and mi ask him if him feel seh town mek anybody a bad man," Clarke said. They then exchanged expletives.

"Mi leave and go inside the fête fi go enjoy miself and about three minutes after being in there him come see me," he continued.

Clarke said he was stabbed several times and had to run in order to escape. One of his friends drove him to hospital.

He received nine stab wounds: three in his side, four in his back, one in his hand and one in his belly. He was hospitalised and placed on a drip.

Clarke reported the matter to the police on Saturday. He, however, feels the police are lagging in making an arrest.

When THE WEEKEND STAR contacted Poor and boasy and queried the incident on Sunday, he dismissed the argument by saying he heard rumours that he was the subject of an attack and not the attacker.

"Mi hear seh dem find mi body a Alligator Pond, seh mi get stab up and dead," he claimed.

no details

He did, however, admit to being in the country but did not spare details of the trip.

"Up to last night him deh a one bar a drink. Him deh a Aenon Town more than how him deh a town. Right now, him supposed to deh a Aenon Town," an angry Clarke said.

"A nuff people see dat (stabbing incident) but de police nuh come arrest him. Right now, mi a pree fi go report it a Mandeville Police station."

Poor and Boasy was the male winner of the recently concluded Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall competition.

MOTHER KILLS SON FOR FOOD?

A mother and her child should share an inseparable bond. But, residents of Ensom City are alleging that a mom from their community stabbed her son because he ate food without her permission.

While the residents have their theory, the official report from the Constabulary Communication Network is that yesterday 20-year-old Dwayne Hylton was stabbed during an alleged dispute with his mother. The incident took place at their home at Barford Drive, Ensom City in Spanish Town, St Catherine. His 43-year-old mother is now in custody.

drug abuser

When THE STAR visited the community yesterday, residents held nothing back as they voiced their anger about the incident.

They claimed that they heard the dispute taking place and then heard the man's last words, ".... Yu really ago kill mi fi one plate a food."

The residents further claimed that Hylton was a drug abuser but was still well mannered and quiet. They also said that it was known to everyone in the community that Hylton was being ill-treated, starved and beaten.

They said that he had been sleeping in the yard and according one woman she had offered him a place to sleep only days before the deadly ordeal.

"If is even this one time . I pray to God that justice will prevail. Every time I remember it, tears come to my eyes," she said.

Meanwhile, crime chief for the St Catherine North police, Deputy Superintendent Derrick Champagnie, said the police had heard the claims that the mother and her son had regular disputes.

He said, however, that he could not say Hylton was killed for food as investigations are still being carried out.

The woman's identity is being withheld pending an interview which will be done later this week in the presence of her attorney.

Caricom: backward ever, forward never

op-rs.jpg

CARIBBEAN unity is an imperative for the survival of small island states like ours. But it seems to be coming apart at the seams, thanks to our tactless and egotistic leaders. Our disintegration comes at a time when much of the world is moving towards some form of unity, if only to sustain their economies in a time of crisis and in the longer term. We are drifting apart as never before. From the draconian immigration policies of Barbados to confusing signals on free and fair trade between Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica, our leaders seem to be working overtime to dismantle what little unity we now enjoy.

Here in T&T, most citizens believe we do not need closer ties with our "poor-ass" Caribbean neighbours. There are two camps that oppose any integration. The first comprises people who are convinced that with our gas-and-oil generated wealth, other Caribbean countries seek only to ride our backs.

The second group, comprising mainly Indo-Trinidadians, see dilution of their political clout in any move towards further integration, and more so in Prime Minister Manning's initiative towards an undefined political unity with three OECS countries.

While it is true oil and gas make us the strongest economy in the region, reality is these two commodities are wasting assets. And our government seems intent on utilising gas at a rate that is not sustainable. Unless we discover one trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas every year, we'd hardly be in a position to carry consumption of this critical commodity beyond 15 years. Those who believe we shall forever remain "sheiks of the Caribbean" must be prepared to contribute their personal "methane power" to the grid (if you don't know how, ask the experts!), because we shall soon run out of steam, quite literally.

As for Indo-Trinidadians who see self-preservation as being more important than survival of the Caribbean, they live in as unrealistic a world as their gas-forever counterparts. I fully agree that Guyana and Suriname must be part of any deepening of Caribbean integration. But so must the other islands, however poor in resources they may be. These same islands form the biggest market for most of our manufactured products, as they will remain for some time.

This brings me to the apartheid-like immigration policies of the Barbados Government that has the support of the majority of Barbadians. Illegal immigration is a global problem, especially in countries whose economies seem to be doing well.

Should Trinidad and Tobago decide to expel illegal immigrants the way Barbados proposes to do, thousands of our Caricom brethren would be booted back to the small islands, to Guyana and Suriname. No country wants to be swamped by illegal immigrants who deny its citizens jobs, school places and more. But any clampdown on visitors who have run afoul of the immigration laws must be fair, not targeting only Indians and small-islanders.

Our Bajan friends would hardly act in a similar manner against Whites who breach their immigration laws. Have they considered, too, that should Trinidad seek to repatriate Barbados-born residents or citizens-something we'll never do, such are the good relations we share with them-the stress that country's economy would face?

Tit-for-tat is not our way treating with our Caricom neighbours. And since most of those targeted happen to be Indo-Guyanese, it seems that Prime Minister David Thompson has not considered how important Guyana will be in the future-food-equation for the Caribbean. Nor has he looked at the extent a backlash from prosperous Indo-tourists would have on the struggling-but-vital life*lo** of Barbados' economy.

I have stayed away from Barbados because I do not feel welcome there-quite unlike the comfort I enjoy in other Caribbean countries. But there are more contentious issues than Barbados' selective xenophobia. Recently, T&T authorities "detained" a shipment of Jamaican patties saying they wanted to examine the facilities where the patties were manufactured. What if Jamaica wants to inspect our plants for every product they import from us? Where is the free trade element of the CSME that all Caricom countries signed on to?

Not that Jamaica's PM, Bruce Golding, is without sin when it comes to regional integration. Eminent Jamaica-born Professor Norman Girvan, in a brief paper on Caricom's integration challenges, cited Golding's opposition to the "E" factor in the CSME, the virtual standstill on the freedom of movement clause, and the non-acceptance of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) by most member states. While we quibble over the extent to which the Caribbean should have cooperation if not integration, other "blocks" are forging ahead on the road to unity.

Hugo Chavez's ALBA is marching on, even with MERCOSUR already in place. The idea of a Bank of South America is very much on the cards. As Girvan pointed out, we rushed to sign on to an EPA with the EU, but we fail to put our own houses in order. The EU is expanding even as it jettisons the age-old sugar protocol, leaving many CARICOM countries in the lurch. But we Caribbean crabs-in-a-barrel are fighting over a handful of illegal immigrants, fair trade and speedier integration. Talk about a backward people saddled with myopic leaders.

Son of Reggae star, Freddie McGregor, Chino took time out to address the simmering Munga-Big Ship feud that heated up when Munga dropped the buss my gun, dem Ship sink line that most people think triggered the feud. But according to Chino, theres more going on behind the friction.

Chino.jpgWe anno friend, but nuff people no really understand why, if it was the song alone (the one with the line about Big Ship sink), I would low it, but it deeper than that. Stephen build a rhythm called Live Up but someone else produced it, and so Stephen was mixing some songs for that rhythm. At the same time, he was about to drop Tremor and he had Munga in mind to voice because we cool with Cool Face, and then when we get the file with Munga song and Stephen a mix it and there was a line that said, buss it rounda Big Ship, Stephen run go hide,

So the man voice it and send it to we, knowing seh Stephen a mix it, that a big diss, and we coulda tek it to him lyrically and musically from dem time de because him no good. Anyway, him get a page, and him run go change the line and say if dem violate Big Ship, Stephen gun ah go rise. Ah him drive come up here come drop off the file. And this is the man who say him no see nuh flesh wah him fraida and him tek back him talk. So from dem time, we realize him a pree we, he explained.

Di man diss my likkle bredda, yuh diss one, yuh diss all he said.

Chino straight up dissed Munga with the song, Punga Don a Pebble on the Dark Again rhythm. He even threatens Munga with physical violence in no uncertain terms when he sings: Bout my ship a sink, what dem tinking about/Shot tear out dem grills inna mouth.

Chino even punks out Munga for his half-hearted attempt to diss the Big Ship when he spits:
Call up man name like dem tink is a joke
Tell dem watch dem blinking approach
Mi neva mean it, is just a little hype me a look
Mi hear the little wimp him a shout

He said that he had two other songs that addressed the Munga issue, but that he was not interested in prolonging any animosity with the 'Gangsta Ras' because he felt the feud is a "waste" of his time, talent and tune.

Not to sound c**cky, but he is not in my class, we are two different leagues. he is a clash artiste, he rides on people name to get a hype, thats why him call up Donia name. But him need fi know himself, Big Ship is not a skettel label, if yu diss Big Ship, me nah go tek dat, him never hear we name ah call inna certain tings, and when mi answer him, it was not just a song, mi was talking mi mind,

He lashed Mungas reliance on the Autotune feature to tweak his distinctive high-pitched sound.

He has a robot voice, him caan survive without Autotune, he cannot sing a note without Autotune, me see on Up and Live ah talk about that it is his voice...and everybody know thats a lie, he is a press button, a robot, him waan voice fi Stephen and now him caan, he said.

For now, Chino is turning his attention towards the promotion of his album Unstoppable with lead single Rave All Night. Director Ras Shac has already been tapped to shoot a video for the single soon.

Right now, its all about focus, he said.

In their debut week, hip-pop act the Black Eyed Peas hijack the top spot on the Billbaord 200 sales charts.

Although it is no surprise that the group grabbed the no. 1 spot, BEP was one of the artists this week to surpass sales expectations. According to the Nielsen SoundScan the Peass latest album, E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) managed to sell 304,100 discs this week as opposed to the projected 215-250K by HitsDailyDouble.

Falling one spot to no. 3 is Eminem. The Detroit superstar hit the platinum mark this sale cycle after four weeks on the charts. Fans copped 87, 500 more copies of the disc this week, making the albums overall sales number stand at 1,049,100.

Just making it into the Top 10 this week is Brooklyn phenom Mos Def. The rapper/actors fourth solo studio effort, The Ecstatic, also exceeded projections pushing 39,000 copies out of the stores. Earlier in the week HitsDailyDouble pegged Mos at the 30K mark.

Former Pretty Ricky singer Pleasure P landed one spot below Mos in his debut week. The album, Introduction of Marcus Cooper, sold 38, 800 copies.

Also premiering on the charts this sales cycle is Yonkers crew D-Blocks E1 compilation disc No Security. The CD just made it into the Top 40, selling 11, 900 discs.

A man who was on his way to visit a doctor was shot dead just metres from the clinic before seeing the physician early yesterday morning in Albion, Montego Bay.

The dead man's family members who arrived at the murder scene about an hour later, identified him as Khorie Barrett, a 39-year-old shopkeeper of Flankers Capture Land in St James.

Eyewitnesses told The Star that at about 9:30 yesterday morning, Barrett was walking along First Street in Albion, heading towards a medical centre when a black car approached him from the opposite direction.

The occupants opened fire hitting Barrett several times. He ran from the scene, but one of his attackers came out of the car, chased him along the road in full view of onlookers and shot him a number of times again. He died on the spot.

"Mi hear eight shots fire and mi see the man a run, but him did already get shot. One a di man jump out a di car, run him down and finish him off. The shooter just hop back in a di car and dem speed off," an eyewitness said.

Police have confirmed the report, but said up to late last evening they had not established any motive for the killing.

As detectives from the Area One Scenes of Crime Unit processed the scene, onlookers described Barrett as a good youth. "Mi know him. Him was a good man," said one person. Another interjected: "Him was always trying something to survive. I don't know why dem would a kill him, but it seem they trailed him into the area."

Detectives attached to the Montego Bay CIB said the car featured in the crime was seen parked in the area earlier. The neighbourhood has been left in shock. Investigations are continuing.

The Customs Contraband Enforcement Team (CET) yesterday seized an assortment of contraband in downtown Kingston including $16 million worth of fake cigarettes, rice, bleaching cream and gels.

Reports are that the CET raided a store on King Street and seized 3,958 cartons of counterfeit cigarettes valued at $16 million and 120,000 kilos of rice packaged in parcels weighing one, two and five kilos, labelled as parboiled rice imported from Brazil.

The expiration date on the parcels had been tampered with and stickers placed over the area. It is suspected that the rice is to be sold on the local market. A quantity of bleaching creams and gels were also confiscated by the CET.

Charges are pending as the proprietors were not present at the store at the time of the raid.

A teenaged girl yesterday morning pleaded with a gunman not to kill her father - a traffic policeman - but unmoved by her desperate cries for mercy, the killer shot the cop to death.

The gunman had gained entry to Constable Pedro Swaby's home in Longville Park, Clarendon by climbing through a window that he smashed in about 3:30 yesterday morning.

The cop's wife, a family friend said yesterday, heard 'suspicious sounds' and made an alarm which woke up the 44-year-old policeman. Swaby, the source said, immediately went to investigate and confronted the intruder.

"They were struggling and then he shot Pedro in his neck. At this point his wife ran outside and started screaming for help," a close friend of the deceased told the Observer.

"His daughter woke up and started pleading with the gunman not to kill her father. But he took up the policeman's car keys and pumped another bullet into him, before escaping in the car," the family friend said.

While scores of people gathered outside the policeman's home, Swaby's distraught daughter was comforted by friends, while the cop's mother, Hermine Swaby, tried hard to maintain her composure.
