It appears as though the peace process between rival camps headed by Vybz Kartel and Mavado has officially been breached. Over the past few weeks 876radio.com has observed a phletoria of verbal insults being hurled back and forth by the two entertainers on some of the lastest rhythm compilations namely: Day Rave, Self Defense and Silent River.

Further investigation by our team to reveal what could have caused the fallout led us to an incident that occured a few days ago between Portmore Empire's wingman Jeffrey Hype, Mavado and members of his entourage.

According to Jeffrey Hype of Portmore Empire, "Mi deh outside a di studio gate a hold a medz an when mi look up di road mi see di black range a come. Anyways mi neva pay it nuh mind cause mi know a di singer, when it reach near, mi see it slow down and the window wind down and Chase Cross start shout a bag a tings, a call me p*ssy hole and how mi must go s*ck mi mada.
After dem pass mi jump inna mi jeep and drive di opposite way and we buck up round di road. Dem start agrue and mi rush dem and dem run. Bout ten minutes later mi get a call seh dem want mi up a station, dem claim seh mi pull weapon pon dem and mi damage the singer Range".

When 876radio.com asked about the accusations, Hype denied the claims, dismissing them as being false and malicious and said he never pulled any weapon nor did he touched the singer's Range Rover. This was later confirmed by the lawmen who could not find any evidence of a dent or scratch on both vehicles.

"When mi reach di station mi see the Range park up and the singer stand up beside the Police dem, so mi start walk towards dem and as mi pass him step out and tump mi inna mi mouth then di whole a di Police dem grab on pon mi and no man no touch di singer all now. Ten minutes later dem a ask mi if mi wah press charges against di singer, so mi just seh, 'No Man Everything Good!'".

"Chu di bwoy stand up beside him corrupt Police fren dem him get weh, but tell him me seh mi want a rematch cause him violate mi and it was an unfair fight. Yuh nuh hear him all sing song seh him tump mi inna mi face, so a nuh lie mi a tell" - Hype added.

Efforts by our team to reach Mavado for his take on the story proved futile but we will keep you posted as the saga unfolds.

Just days after their hilarious Trial & Crosses - Stir It Up Vol. 8 comic satire was released to rave reviews, Patrick Curly Lox Gaynor and Paul Tu-Lox Gaynor (more popularly known as Twin of Twins) have found themselves in hot water as they were arrested and taken into custody yesterday by the Half-Way Tree police - on reasonable suspicion of fraud.

It is being alleged that they took J$50,000 from an unnamed upcoming artiste earlier this year, under the guise that they were able to give him the opportunity to travel to the United States to perform. It is further alleged that they failed to deliver on their promise, and subsequently refused to return the complainants money. They are now in custody at the Half-Way-Tree police station awaiting interview/questioning.

Sources close to the Twins have indicated that the charges are trumped up, politically motivated and also directly related to the recent release of Stir It Up Vol. 8. According to the source, the Twins were threatened that they would be in deep trouble if they released Stir It Up Vol. 8.

"Its been an amazing year for me," said Serani. "We've covered so much ground, performing in so many different places in front of some huge crowds. This business is all about hard work and laying the foundation in different markets. Canada will be my first official tour and I'm looking forward to representing myself and the Alliance for all my fans over there. Its gonna be a movie!

NEW YORK Divers and sonar operators hunted for two missing engines from a US Airways jetliner in challenging, nearly impossible conditions as investigators made plans to carefully hoist the damaged plane from the water to retrieve the flight and data recorders.

The engines, lost when Flight 1549 splashed down after colliding with birds, were presumed to have been carried somewhere cold, dark and murky by the river's strong tides.

Exactly where, though, was a mystery. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers vessels and city police department boats were to resume the search Saturday, probing the sediment-obscured riverbottom along a 4 1/2 mile stretch from the point of impact to the southern tip of Manhattan.

Investigators also planned to conduct their first interview Saturday with the pilot, Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger, who slipped the crippled aircraft into the river when he couldn't make a nearby airport, saving the lives of all 155 people aboard.

Authorities want to closely inspect the engines to figure out how exactly the birds caused the plane to fail so badly and so fast. They may also examine any feathers remaining in the engine to determine the type of bird species, helping prevent future mishaps.

Thick mud, swift tides and bone-chilling temperatures stymied investigators Friday as the probe began. The current was especially strong Friday, making it impossible for crews to life the aircraft out of the water.

Authorities said they planned to extract the aircraft Saturday with a pair of big cranes and put it on a barge, where it can be inspected.

Experts said the wrecked engines could be far tougher to recover.

They could be 30 to 50 feet down, stuck in mud and obscured by thick sediment. Conditions are so murky that police and fire department divers will have to feel about by hand.

"There is hardly anything to see because of the sediment," said Thomas M. Creamer, chief of the operations division of the New York District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, one of the groups brought in to help with the search.

Two Army Corps survey boats began searching for the engines on Friday, one working south from the crash site, the other heading north from lower Manhattan.

Under the direction of the police department, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration used sonar to look for the engines. That technology can produce a more vivid picture of the riverbottom, but its range is limited.

"It is going to take time," Creamer said. "It is a large area. Things move around quickly."

Meanwhile, the pilot's status as a national hero rose by the hour as he took a congratulatory call from the president, earned effusive praise from passengers on the plane and become the subject of a growing global fan club.

Sullenberger was in good spirits and showing no outward signs of stress from the ordeal, a pilots union official said.

The engines will be a main focus of the probe.

The type of engine on the Airbus 320 is designed to withstand a 4-pound bird strike, said Jamie Jewell, a spokeswoman for CFM International of Cincinnati, which manufactures the engines. That's fairly typical for commercial airliners and their engines, although larger Canada geese can exceed 12 pounds.

Kitty Higgins, a spokeswoman for the National Transportation Safety Board, also suggested that part of the investigation will be to "celebrate what worked here," something of a rarity for an agency that focuses on figuring out what went wrong in a disaster.

"A lot of things went right yesterday, including the way that not only the crew functioned, but the way the plane functioned."

The investigation began as new details emerged about why the pilot chose to land the plane in the river and not at two nearby airports. The pilot twice told air controllers that he was unable to make the proper turn after reporting a "double bird strike."

The tower believed Sullenberger meant that both his jet engines had been damaged by bird impacts.

The accident also raised questions about whether airports around the country are doing enough to deal with bird flocks.

The agency that operates New York City's major airports said it has a multimillion-dollar program to chase birds off its property, but can only do so much to protect planes once they are in the air.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said it kills thousands of birds every year in the marshy waterways and tidal flats that surround its two major airports in Queens, and uses guns, pyrotechnics and hawks to drive away birds.

Among the other tactics: Bird eggs are coated in oil to prevent them from hatching. Nests are removed. The agency also plays recordings of bird distress calls, and landscapers remove any shrubs and trees that might be attractive to certain species.

Sometimes aircraft have to take evasive action to avoid a flock of geese. Other times, it's too late and they can only hope for the best.

One Boeing 737 pilot writing about a strike in a safety report described the smell of burnt feathers and seabird after a gull was *u*ked into his rear engine during a landing at LaGuardia in 2004.

If an engine takes in a large bird or several birds at once fan blades may break, causing an imbalance in the engine's rotation and severe vibrations, said Kevin Poormon, who tests the ability of aircraft engines to withstand bird strikes. Those vibrations conceivably could be strong enough to cause the engine to come loose from its mounting, Poormon said.

Passengers heaped more praise on Sullenberger, co-pilot Jeff Skiles and their crew for how they handled the landing and evacuation.

"My thanks goes out to the pilot for his quick reaction and putting us down like he did," said Shae Childers, 38, of Gaggney, S.C., who was recovering from hypothermia Friday at a New York hospital. "There could not have been a better scenario to this disaster. It could have been much worse. God really had to be with him as well."

David Sanderson, 47, of Charlotte, N.C., said the fact that they survived the landing was a testament to Sullenberger's training. "He is a true professional," he said. "He wasn't screaming. He maintained calm and control the whole time."

Sullenberger's wife, in an interview outside their California home, called him "a pilot's pilot" and said talk of him being a national hero was "a little weird."

At a City Hall ceremony Friday to honor those who came to the aid of the stranded passengers, Mayor Michael Blo****erg said Sullenberger's actions "inspired people around the city, and millions more around the world."

The NTSB is working with the FBI and the city to retrieve any video evidence recorded by city citizens. The Coast Guard is trying to ensure that fuel still in the aircraft is contained, if possible, and doesn't spill into the river.

Police and emergency crews also pulled about 15 pieces of carry-on luggage, the door of the plane, sheared pieces of metal and flotation devices from the water.

Tarrus Riley walked away the biggest winner at last Sunday night's inaugural staging of the Reggae Academy Awards (RAA), held at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston.

Riley, who won in six categories, among them, Breakthrough Reggae Artiste, Best Solo Male Vocal Performer, Best Reggae Song and Most Popular Song, was overwhelmed with his big haul.

"Mi feel great, mi a live out mi dreams and it just feels nice, this is all great for the music and the country. Mi get six awards, the video get two and me personally get four," Riley said in an interview with THE STAR after the show.

Riley also commended the organisers of the event saying, "it's classy, it's all good, because dem sey encouragement sweeten labour. Right now, mi nuh haffi guh get nuh Grammy, wi have it right here in Jamaica".

And indeed, Riley might not have been too far off the mark when he said he had his own Grammy Awards in Jamaica, as the RAA went all out to ensure that the inaugural staging was a classy success.

Black carpet

STARRIGHT_1_PPMBKeFashiAM.jpg
Miss Jamaica World 2007 Yendi Phillipps (right), struts onstage with Aisha Davis during Tarrus Riley's performance of 'She's Royal'.

It was not red, but black carpet VIP treatment for the stars who turned out, dressed to impress. Video light and camera flashes were by no means on the short side, as dozens flocked to capture the stars as they collected awards and delivered stellar performances.

Performances came from the likes of Cherine Anderson who told of a Kingston State of Mind, Shaggy who spoke about Church Heathen, Katalys Crew and Prodigal Son who delivered the gospel, and Etana who remained close to her Roots.

Morgan Heritage sang of Down by the River, Tarrus Riley wooed the females with She's Royal, Queen Ifrica hit Below the Waist and Demarco paid tribute to all Fallen Soldiers.

Other performances for the night came from Assassin, Ce'Cile, Wayne Marshall, Voicemail, Harry Toddler, Elephant Man, Diana King, Toots Hibberts, Ziggy Marley and Marcia Griffiths, who brought the curtains down.

Belly-bursting jokes

In addition to the belly-bursting jokes from the evening's host, Owen 'Blacka' Ellis, and winners taking the stage and making that familiar speech, beginning with that all too familiar line, "first of all, I would like to thank father God", there were a few special awards that went out to the likes of Bob Marley, Chris Blackwell and Ernie Ranglin.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding presented the Reggae Icon Award to Rita Marley for her late husband, Bob. According to Prime Minister Golding, "reggae music and its practitioners have been all over the world tonight, we honour our own".

Chris Blackwell was presented with the Reggae Trailblazer Award by Minister Olivia 'Babsy' Grange for his outstanding contribution to reggae music. Ernie Ranglin was presented with the Reggae Legend Award by Chris Blackwell.

Overall, the inaugural Reggae Academy Awards was a successful event, where lively performances lit up the stage, hard-working persons in the entertainment industry were rewarded and all who attended left feeling proud to finally have their own 'Grammy Awards' in Jamaica.

REBEL SALUTE 2008 RUN DOWN

January 15, 2008

When Jah Cure sang Sunny Day at the Port Kaiser Sports Club, St. Elizabeth, yesterday it was just that, the Sunday morning waxing warm at 8:17.
So was he, before a bumper crowd, the vast majority waiting through the marathon Tru-Juice Rebel Salute 2008, duly dubbed '2000 and love'.
The raised sea of tri-colour flags fluttered as they had from he started singing off-stage and jogged on to the refrain of Longing For, through to closing with Sticky Sticky.
Spanner Banner had the audience as his choir on his closing Life Goes On and Leroy Gibbons was a musical tornado,
versions of Four Season Lover, Lover's Question and Magic Moment tearing the house down. There was a calm, as Jimmy Riley cooled considerably after his opening Rougher Yet, the closing Love and Devotion putting back some life.
Tony Rebel sounded a bit hoarse in the early going with Cyaa Go Roun' Good, Lovefire coming before a strong run of the more familiar from Sweet Jamaica through to If Jah Is Standing By My Side, Richie Stephens guesting in between.
I-Wayne spent a considerable amount of his stage time talking after a peep into the Book of Life and Living in Love had sent the flags skyward, his extensive
against 'nastiness' scoring before he ended by sowing Life Seeds.
Excellent performance
Chalices started out with Good To Be There at 2:45 a.m. Trapped, Revival Time and Pocomania Day got the better responses for Chalice before an audience which stood through excellently executed Good To Be There and Stew Peas, among others.
After starting out with Stepping It Hotter This Year, Ini Kamoze's Worl a Reggae Music made a more appreciable impression on the audience, despite solid
and clear, strong delivery. Taxi was also well received before the closing My Girl.
Ernie Smith and Pluto Shervingto Duppy Gunman and I Man Born Ya,respectively, among the
[that hit home harder, the pair tossing in Half-Way Tree and Down By The River for younger uns.
The festival gathered for the home drive with Junior Reid closing with One b*o**d, Etana anchoring with Roots and George Nooks wrapping up with God Is Standing By, while Collie Buddz hit stride with Come Around.
Queen Ifrica, greeted by thunderous roars and furious flag-waving, did Born Free, Randy, Sensimilla, Below The Waist and Daddy. The fire continued with Lutan Fyah, who did Wha Dat, closing with St. Jago De La Vega.
In the 'morning ride' Richie Spice took the house down with Earth a Run Red, Brown Skin and Black Like a Tar, among other songs, Tarrus Riley's closing She's Royal getting his best response. Capleton's early blazing Or Wha and Fire Time cooled into a reggae groove with Invasion and Jah Jah City before Busy Signal turned down requests from a lady who wanted to go "on the edge", and declared We're Not Going Down. After DeMarco informed "Duppy know who fe frighten", the Signal picked up with The Days, done in squeaky clean fashion. The banners went up in reverence on DeMarco's Fallen Soldiers before Busy closed strong with Nah Go a Jail Again.

Dancehall deejay Ninja Man (real name - Desmond Ballentine) and his son Jahniel Ballentine were both denied bail when they appeared in the Gun Court section of the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate Court earlier yesterday.

Both face charges of murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of firearm stemming from the March 2009 murder of a man in the Marl Road area of Olympic Gardens. Two other men who are also facing murder charges in connection with the same case were also denied bail.

The judge indicated that the allegations were too serious to grant them bail. Since being charged back in March of this year, Ninja Man has been denied bail at least four times. He is scheduled to return to court on July 2.

Publicist Christopher Campbell who was allegedly 'boxed' by Mavado and beaten by members of his entourage will be making a public statement later today on the incident that was triggered by a story on a local entertainment website about the Alliance singer.

Mavado3.jpga meeting is planned for this evening with principals and stakeholders in the entertainment business, artistes, producers and Minister of Entertainment Babsy Grange.

In the meantime, there are several rumours circulating around David 'Mavado' Brooks whose show scheduled for Saturday March 16, at Miami Soho Studios was disrupted after an altercation outside the venue left one key member of his entourage, Chase Cross, nursing a near-fatal knife wound to the neck.

Sources told us that after receiving the wound, the young man complained that he could not feel his legs or lower extremities. The police arrived soon the stabbing incident and an ambulance was called to take him to the trauma unit at a nearby hospital.

Mayhem broke out at a stage show in Antigua on Sunday night when popular Antiguan disc jockey Kenny Nibbs and singer Tarrus Riley got into a verbal dispute onstage at the 'Peace and Unity Concert 2007'.

The was the concert's first annual staging and according to Riley's manager, Dean Fraser hell broke loose when Nibbs disrespected the artiste and his band onstage. According to Frasier it all began when the band arrived at the venue for a 7 p.m. start to a packed house waiting for the concert to begin, which it did two hours later.

"It was 3 a.m. at the time, and we had a 6 a.m. flight to catch, so I told him we need to get this ting on. Him start act all weird. So di band start play and Tarrus start come onstage. He (Kenny) start cuss bad words to di road manager while Tarrus is singing. He (Kenny) came back onstage wid bout six or eight man a seh Tarrus disrespect him, a nuh Jamaica we deh is Antigua" Fraser said.

Fraser added that a bottle was thrown onstage and he asked the promoter to call security to diffuse the situation. After singing only three songs, Tarrus left the stage and the show came to an end as disappointed fans left.

However, disc jockey Kenny Nibbs tells a different story. According to Nibbs in his 25 years in the business he has never felt more disrespected.

"I wasn't in confrontation wid Tarrus Riley. I swear di band was suppose to be 'Live Wire' when a tall Rasta came and told me is Black Soil. I said cool but he went on di most way. I call on Kenyatta Hill he was impressive and the crowd like dat. I hear dem backstage a talk bout its late so I cut dat and call on Tarrus. Before I could do dat him come onstage and he told me to get off the stage and the crowd didn't like dat and throw a bottle on stage," Nibbs said.

According to Nibbs, other radio jocks have proclaimed that they will not be playing any more Tarrus Riley songs on Antigun radio. "Even Jamaicans seh he is disrespectful and he start di whole Ting. It is the first time in 20 years someone tell me if come off di stage," Nibs said. Nibs also claimed that Rile came to him after the show and apologised.

For the promoter of the show Roger Perry both parties were wrong. "I think its irresponsible on both parties to let the situation escalate. Mr Riley thought the emcee was dead and not giving him a hype to go on and his road manager pulled the mic from the emcee. The emcee thought that was disrespectful," Perry said.

When asked if the emcee was disrespectful in any way Perry commented "that is his style. Two wrongs don't make a right. Other artistes on the show and everybody felt the same way but they went aside and spoke to him. He was also to blame."

WE  understands that Jamaican dancehall performers Mavado and Bounty Killer were not allowed to perform at the Second City Banqueting Suite in Sherlock Street, Hockley earlier this week as police officers, acting on what they dubbed a credible security threat stepped in at the last minute to stop the concert.

Bounty_Killer.jpgThe 11th hour cancellation irked dancehall fans and once again raised concerns about discrimination against their culture. The event organisers Birmingham-based Luv One Luv All Promotions have taken a financial pounding as the concert cost over Ł25,000 to stage, and they had been forced to implement special security arrangements including walk-through metal detectors, a retinue of 30 security guards and specially trained dogs.

Reports reaching us are that over 700 tickets had already been sold for the event, but the police maintain that their actions stemmed from security concerns.

In a statement, West Midlands Police said: "It was agreed that the event should not go ahead due to specific and credible information received by police, which raised concerns for public safety."

A string of negative incidents has threatened to derail Mavados high-flying momentum in recent months. Last week, the deejays close associate, Chase Cross, was stabbed outside the Miami Soho Studios on March 16th before the show even began. On January 19th of this year, Mavado had been booked to perform at a show in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, but he was been banned by the local authorities, presumably because of the content of his music.

The police said the decision had been made bearing in mind that St. Vincent and the Grenadines had experienced 36 murders on the island in 2007, a huge jump from 13 in 2006, and they were concerned about Mavado's lyrics, which were considered to be violent. In December 2007, the deejays show was brought to a premature end by a swarm of local cops who surrounded Temple Hall Estate in rural St. Andrew.

Last year, Mavado had two dates in the UK on November 23 and 25 at the Mercia Banqueting Suite (Coventry) and the Stratford Rex (London) respectively. That show should have been is first ever performance in the UK.

States could lose money over prison rapes

WASHINGTON New measures aimed at reducing prison rapes are in the works and states that fail to take steps to protect their inmates could see their federal money cut.

The new standards were proposed Tuesday by the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission, a bipartisan panel that spent five years studying the issue. It's estimated that about 60,000 inmates are sexually abused each year.

With more than 7.3 million people behind bars or on parole and probation in the U.S., the report said jails and prisons should take a series of steps to eliminate sexual abuse of inmates. Those steps include the adoption of zero tolerance policies, better staff training and improved screening to identify prisoners vulnerable to abuse.

"Individuals who are incarcerated have basic human rights," said U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton, chairman of the commission. "Just because they've committed a crime and they're incarcerated does not mean that their human dignity can be abused."

The proposed standards are being sent to Attorney General Eric Holder, who has a year to write national standards. States will be notified of the finalized standards and then must adopt them or risk losing 5 percent of any federal prison grant money.

Elephant Man - File

When new slangs are created in dancehall music, children are the first to catch on to them, thereby influencing the way they speak.

'Slang specialist' Elephant Man said he is aware that he influences children with the many slangs that he has created and made popular.

"Anything weh mi seh de kids dem go wid it. Di kids are one of di first set that hang on to it (slangs). When yuh hear di kids with it, yuh know seh de slang shot," Elephant Man told THE STAR.

Children are often heard using some of the slangs Ele uses, like 'mucho', 'tranquelo', 'shizzle', 'mi linky' and 'caliente'. However, he maintained that the children used these to greet each other.

In addition, he said slang was very popular in garrison areas.

informal cases

As for the use of words like 'two' and 'come', Elephant Man said he encourages children to say 'two', as they cannot count without using it. Nonetheless, he believes nothing is wrong with them replacing 'two' with 'few' in informal cases.

Renigade from the duo RDX said there are three languages in Jamaica: patois, English and dancehall. Words like 'two' and 'come', are usually inappropriate in the dancehall context.

He further stated that children were easily influenced by the dancehall, both positively and negatively.

"Although our music is not necessarily done for kids, it still reaches them. So we (artistes) need to be careful what we say, while maintaining the entertainment value," Renigade told THE STAR.

In the same breath, Renigade said some people went over the top when they refused to use certain words.

"Some people ridiculous with it when dem a seh 'three-day' instead a 'today', but some of it make sense," said Renigade.

Although not yet a father, he said that he tells children around him that it is important to count correctly.

respect

STARRIGHT_1_P6JCEP10006AM.jpg
Overmars of the Ravers Clavers.

As a dancer and an artiste, Overmars said he is someone who children, especially in his community, respect and try to emulate.

"In my community, you have kids weh look up to we as dancers. When we come up with a slang, they gravitate to it. As dem see me, yuh will hear dem a seh 'Overmars above a dem'," Overmars told THE STAR, indicating that his newest slang was 'above a dem'.

"Inna yuhself, yuh feel good seh de kids a look up to we, but we keep it pon a clean level that dem can use it."

Children's ability to switch from dancehall slangs to standard English, Overmars said, is dependent on their schooling and upbringing.

In the meantime, Elephant Man says another of his songs, Ungrateful Soup, which is also a slang, has been creating waves since its release. The song was recorded on Mr G's Paranoid rhythm and a video for it was shot recently.

"My newest slang on the road is 'ungrateful soup'. When yuh have some friend weh start player hate yuh, tell dem seh dem a drink de soup, the ungrateful soup," Elephant Man said.

Jamaica's woes worry Manning

Exporting Liquified National Gas (LNG) to Jamaica is now a national priority for this country's Government.

Prime Minister Patrick Manning said this was because Jamaica is facing a serious challenge with its alumina industry, as he expressed the Government's view that the fellow Caribbean Community (Caricom) product will be processed at an aluminium smelter in Trinidad and Tobago "one day".

"With a debt to GDP ratio of 130 in Jamaica, the one thing that Trinidad and Tobago could not allow is a further deterioration in the economic situation in that country. We cannot allow it," Manning said.

He spoke on the issue as a matter of great urgency, during his closing remarks at the People's National Movement (PNM) special convention at the Chaguaramas Convention Centre on Sunday. His comments also came just days after the High Court ruled that the approval granted by the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) for the Alutrint smelter in this country was unlawful.

The supply of LNG to Jamaica from Trinidad and Tobago has been the subject of long-standing discussions between both countries, but Manning said the ongoing international financial crisis has led to a reduction in the demand for alumina, which is a key exporter revenue earner for Jamaica.

"The supply of LNG to Jamaica from Trinidad and Tobago must now be a national priority for the Government of Trinidad and Tobago," Manning said.

He said several of Jamaica's alumina refineries have been shut down, but that situation is changing and once it rebounds, Jamaica has to be in a position to expand its alumina manufacturing.

"And, of course, we look forward to the day when Jamaican alumina can be an essential input into an aluminium smelter in Trinidad and Tobago to the dream of the 70s and 80s," Manning said.

60 deejays turn up for Heineken Green Synergy Kingston auditions

By Dave Lindo

Friday, June 19, 2009

The Heineken Green Synergy 2009 auditions are now in full swing as the highly-rated DJ competition in the Caribbean circles the island to find the brightest new deejays in the country.

(From left) DJ Nico, DJ Shine Head, Donovan Dacres, DJ Jigga and Kurt Riley at MoBay's audition.

The first audition, held at Peppers Night Club in Kingston on Sunday, June 14, saw a big turnout of 60 aspiring deejays on their quest to pocket the over two million dollars up for grabs this year. There was also a huge throng of spectators, including prominent figures from the music fraternity.

All 60 deejays tried their best to impress the judges Collin Hinds and Kurt Riley from FAME FM and DJ Sunshine from Irie Fm.

From the lot, 16 got the 'green card' from the judges to advance. A big surprise on the day was the awesome display by the lone female, DJ Naz, who coolly showed her male counterparts just how it is done with some 'wicked' mixing while unleashing some 'tough' selections.

DJ Naz was happy about her performance. "I was nervous at first, but as I played I started to enjoy myself. I feel good to know that I was selected," she said.

The DJ of three years said that she will be working on her mix CD, which all Deejays who advance have to submit. The CDs will be reviewed by a panel of judges.

A total of 16 Deejays will be selected and they will be revealed at the launch of the competition on July 3 at the Barbican playing field in Kingston.

Also advancing was last year's quarter-finalist, DJ Shine, who looked in good form while displaying some crisp mixing. Shines was feeling very confident "I am going for it this year. I am more confident this time around as I have been practising. I have learnt a whole lot from the experience last year," he said.

The Mandeville leg was just as big as Kingston's with the Shock Wave Sports Bar and Club packed with DJs and onlookers.

They were judged by Collin Hinds and Kurt Riley as well as Pink Panther from Black Kat, the reigning World Clash Champion.

With the Main Events crew working overtime in creating a top quality production for the competition, the stage was set for a wonderful day.

Out of 52 entrants in Mandeville, 15 got the green card. From the group, a young entrant by the name of DJ Chungy, who was entering the competition for the second time, was very impressive. The young DJ displayed some breath-taking mixes and awesome scratches, including scratching with his back turned.

Chungy by far is the most talented Deejay seen up to that point, as described by Kurt Riley. "Chungy without a doubt is Green Synergy material."

Those who impressed also were DJ Pose from Xclamation Disco, DJ Nile, former Black Kat selector, and DJ Haro, who showed much promise.

The next stop was Tuesday, June 16, in Montego Bay at the hip spot Margaritaville. With the rain pouring throughout the day, a total of 37 entrants braved the weather to show their talent.

Interestingly three out of five previous winners are from the western Jamaica - DJ Slim, DJ Nico and DJ Jigga.

Not much talent was seen at this audition with only 7 getting the green card from the judging panel which, this time, also included the veteran disc jockey, Donovan Dacres. However DJ Shine Head, resident DJ from Margaritaville, entered and entertained with an electrifying display on the turn tables. Without a doubt, Shine Head is one to watch as the competition progresses. DJ Haro from Hedonism also showed promise, as well as DJ Alroy from Full Blast sound.

At press time Wednesday, June 17, 2009 the audition was under way at Margaritaville in Ocho Rios. It will be at the La Best Night Club in Portland today from 11 am to 5 pm each day.

The event is being captured for television by the Winford William's run Caribbean Entertainment Production team which will be shown on TVJ as well as on On Stage on CVM.

Offcial Statement:
As many of you know, The Twin of Twins were arrested yesterday in HWT. We believe that this arrest was the direct result of the popularity of the new CD Stir it Volume 8, and this misuse of Justice is an attempt to undermine the credibility of the Twin of Twins. The Twin of Twins have never feared exposing the corruption and dirt that occurs within the Jamaican music industry. Before its release The Twins had threats from unknown parties that they would suffer "severe consequences" if the CD saw the "light of day." Many artistes, and some industry executives with political power were deeply offended by the CD, and without mentioning names threats were directed at the Twins. The facts are the Twins released the new CD, and within one week, they were arrested on unsubstantiated and trumped up charges. Attached in a youtube link and audio recording of the real life "Ras Whitey" to the rescue calling out the Jamaican Police in a recorded phone conversation earlier today exposing the police and the injustice and double standard in Jamaica. The press was tipped off before the arrest, and actually reported it before the official statement was made. This is an actual recording as the names of the officers can be verified

The weekly Dutty Fridaze party is set to expand its boundaries even further, as promoter Wayne Bartley aka '2 Gran' says, in addition to having gone global, he wants to stage the event in the 14 parishes in Jamaica.

"To how it gone global an everybody a talk bout it an di DVD gone abroad, wi start fi tek it on a broader basis, because wi keep it all over the Caribbean, England, Canada and the U.S. But what wi plan to do now is to take it to the 14 parishes in Jamaica. Last month, we started off in Portland, and our next Dutty Fridaze on the road will be in St. Thomas," 2 Gran said.

The St. Thomas leg of Dutty Fridaze is scheduled to be held on May 23, Labour Day and then in Brown's Town, St. Ann on June 6.

According to 2 Gran, persons everywhere are already looking forward to the event being staged in their neck of the woods.

"When wi guh to these places and tell them that we want to bring Dutty Fridaze in their area, everybody is excited and willing to corporate, because dem use to it from cable and DVDs and even on our website. There is also a new website, www.duttyfridazereggae.com, where anybody who want information on Dutty Fridaze can log on there," 2 Gran said.

REMAINING OPTIMISTIC

In taking a closer look home at the event's weekly Fletcher's Land location, 2 Gran says they remain optimistic that his weekly street dance will not be severely harmed by the new 2 a.m. stipulation by the police.

According to 2 Gran, "the lock off time is the same thing, 2 a.m., because is something that goes for all the dances, even though some a di dance dem wi get wey. But tru we have our ting every Friday, we haffi adhere to the rules."

The change in cut off time, 2 Gran says, has left some patrons finding it difficult to adjust.

"First time wi kick off like 3, 4 a.m. an wi guh all till 7-8 a.m. But this whole new time code for the dances an the night life thing started about three weeks ago, an when it did just start off, things moved really slow," 2 Gran said.

He continued, "There were people who were still coming in all three, four o' clock an dem a complain an a sey wah, Dutty Fridaze lock off already. Because when wi talk fi di first, nobody nah too tek wi serious, but after couple weeks, most people start fi bruk inna di vibes."

The promoter said what they had to do was to "start some early vibes thing, some games, Karaoke an dem likkle ting deh fi start di party off early."

However, 2 Gran says he is in no more argument with the law as he sees where the early cut off time could be beneficial to him.

"I think the time thing will work out for me in the long run, because people who nuh normally come a Dutty Fridaze an want to come, like students from UTech and these places, always say the time thing too late fi dem, and then yuh have some people a sey, bwoy mi nah come a Dutty Fridaze, cause a really Dutty Saturday dat," he said.

So 2 Gran says he is urging patrons to continue to support the event, "jus come out early and cooperate with the law. A di regular hardcore juggling and di regular vibes, a jus sey wi haffi do wi ting early. An mi waan big up the Central Police General Office and the patrol teams, because dem police deh work wid di Friday ting, dem nuh try fight 'gainst it."

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Wendy's employee suspected of shooting and killing his co-worker inside the Southside fast-food restaurant was arrested Friday evening.
A day after police said 27-year-old Thomas Brown shot his co-worker, 22-year-old Juanese Miller, police found Brown at a Northside motel off Interstate 95 near Golfair Boulevard.

According to investigators, Brown was working at the fast-food restaurant when he got upset about something and left work.

"He went home and he said in a rage, 'I'm tired of this. I'm going to kill whomever,'" said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Derrick Lewis.

Thomas Brown's car was spotted in the parking lot of a Northside motel.

Police said Brown returned to work with a gun and shot Miller.

Officers said before Brown left the restaurant he announced that he was going to "make cops shoot him."

On Friday afternoon, a SWAT team and U.S. marshals converged on a Northside motel where the green Honda Accord that Brown was last seen driving was spotted.

"Once they located the Honda Accord, they were able to narrow down which room the suspect was located in. They called the suspect on the telephone. He agreed to come out, and he did come out unarmed and surrendered peacefully," said JSO Lt. Larry Schmitt.

He said a gun was found at the motel, but whether that firearm was the weapon used in the killing has not been determined.

Schmitt said homicide detectives were interviewing Brown. He also said a woman who was in the motel room with Brown was being questioned by investigators.

"Early information is that she was there willingly. She was not aware of the murder that occurred the previous day, and she had no knowledge or was not a participant in the murder yesterday," Schmitt said.

Schmitt said Brown is charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

In what appears to be a new development in the drug trafficking business, drug dealers are travelling to Jamaica to recruit people to help in their trade.

The police have so far arrested one Trinidadian who they say recently came to the island to recruit persons to help him export 123.2kg (271lb) of ganja.

Peter Hutton, a native of the twin-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago, was arrested by the Narcotics Police after he attempted to export the drug in water heaters. Hutton and three of his alleged 'recruits' were taken before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court last Friday, where he pleaded guilty to possession of, dealing in, taking steps to export ganja, conspiracy to export ganja and conveyance of ganja. His co-accused, Larisha Richards, Paul Telfer and Michelle Lewis, who are also charged with the same offences, were not pleaded.

local store

It is alleged that Hutton came to the island and enlisted the help of the three accused persons. Water heaters were reportedly purchased from a local store and were dismantled and then reassembled with ganja inside. The heaters were then reportedly delivered in a truck to a warehouse at the Norman Manley International Airport for export. It is believed that this was not Hutton's first attempt to export ganja in this manner and that he had succeeded in doing so before. The police say this repeat effort helped them to nab Hutton.

Hutton is accused of approaching random persons and convincing them to join him with the promise of money.

When the matter was mentioned in court on Friday, Hutton willingly and readily indicated that he was pleading guilty to all charges. He is to be sentenced on July 21, while the others are to return to court on July 24.

Whenever there is anything free, it is almost certain that there will be chaos. And there was indeed some amount, with Red Stripe's Dream Weekend kick-off party, which was held on the roof of the National Housing Trust car park, as hundreds of persons converged at the entrance, many being turned away due to an overcrowded venue.

But all was not lost. Out of 500 possible season tickets made available across the island on that night, only three were not sold. And that made Dream Team's head of marketing, Ron Burke, very pleased.

"We can't be more pleased. We had tickets available at all the Margaritaville outlets (Ochi Rios, Negril and Montego Bay) and Beavers in Mandeville. Only three were not sold because they were reserved tickets," he said.

"Last year was a much smaller launch geared at a specific target audience. This year's campaign is a huge islandwide operation as you would have seen," he added.

So business was good, and the massive crowd support was evidence of this.

However, persons inside the venue may not have been able to party freely (due to the overcrowded venue). At one point, selector Tony Matterhorn was forced to turn off the music in an attempt to reduce the size of the crowd, which was clearly in the thousands.

One female, who said she had planned all week for the party, questioned, "So why them say come by invitation only, when it look like everybody can come in?"

However, there was some good music, and Coppershot, ZJ Liquid and Tony Matterhorn provided it. The space wasn't enough to let loose and patrons had to push and shove their way in order to create room for dancing.

Its 2009 and clearly we are all in a state of a recession and the music industry is feeling the impact. Labels are down sizing and resentful when kicking out enormous budgets. Rumor has it, Bow Wow and Harlems own Jim Jones just got hit with the short end of the stick. After one album Jim Jones has been dropped from his contract with Sony Records and Bow Wow has also became a victim after more than 10 years with the label.

Looking like a result of album sales; more marketing dollars are being dished out than there is revenue coming in from album sales. According to inside sources, Sony spent 4.7 Million! Yes, Million on Jim Jones last album and less than half of that was put back into the cookie jar. Looks like Sony took a hard hit with that one. In Bow Wows case, his last projects have not been picking up good numbers; and lets not forget the album with Omarion was a failure.

Well, with both being free agents, I wonder where theyll end up. Independent, maybe? Or maybe Bow Wow will take his statements of retiring more seriously.

We will have more information as the story develops.

ROME, Italy (AP) - More than a billion people - a sixth of the world's population - are now hungry, a historic high due largely to the global economic crisis and stubbornly high food prices, a UN agency said yesterday.

Compared with last year, there are 100 million more people who are hungry, meaning they consume fewer than 1,800 calories a day, the Food and Agriculture Organisation said.

Almost all the world's undernourished live in developing countries, where food prices have fallen more slowly than in the richer nations, the report said. Poor countries need more aid and agricultural investment to cope, it said.

"The silent hunger crisis, affecting one-sixth of all of humanity, poses a serious risk for world peace and security," said the agency's Director General Jacques Diouf.

Officials presenting the new estimates in Rome sought to stress the link between hunger and peace, noting that soaring prices for staples, such as rice, triggered riots in the developing world last year.

"Food security is one of our most critical peace and security issues of our time," said Josette Sheeran of the World Food Program, another UN food agency based in Rome.

"A hungry world is a dangerous world," she told reporters.

At the end of last Friday's result show, 18-year-old Spaldings High School past student, Dennilee West, made it through to the studio finals of Digicel Rising Stars, copping the most votes from the Ocho Rios batch of top 10 chosen from the auditions.

The former prefect and student council vice-president screamed that she was "happy, happy, happy" when interviewed on Saturday night.

"I'm overwhelmed and overjoyed and excited. I can't wait for the studio round to start and I hope Jamaica likes me," West said. She thanked everyone who voted for her and mentioned that her family and friends were also elated that she was going through to the next phase of the competition.

West clinched her spot in the Ocho Rios auditions when she crooned My New Lover, My New Friend.

on cloud nine

Eighteen-year-old Donielle Goddard's rendition of One Night Only also resonated well with judges and Jamaicans from the moment the audition tapes began rolling. Goddard, too, was announced in the prized top three and she has been floating ever since.

"Since the announcement, everyone is really excited for me and I've been getting a lot of congratulations," the Edna Manley College student said.

"I feel good. I was really nervous when the announcements were being made on TVJ, but now I know I just have to do my best, because I'm now through to the studio rounds and I'm so excited, but nervous at the same time."

Stacheal Smith, who received rave reviews from Digicel Rising Stars judge Clyde McKenzie, rounds out the top three from Ocho Rios. Smith sealed her top-10 spot, and eventually her top-three spot, with Natural Woman by Aretha Franklyn. McKenzie said she was a pick for one of the spots because she has an ability to convey what she's feeling through song.

Now all is ready for the studio finals of the Digicel Rising Stars this Sunday. Stay tuned to TVJ and watch Jamaica shine.

The manager of Black Eyed Peas star Will.i.am has been charged with the alleged assault of Hollywood gossip blogger Perez Hilton.

Perez, real name Mario Lavandeira, claims he was attacked by Liborio 'Polo' Molina outside the Cobra nightclub following the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto, Canada on Sunday night.

Molina, 36, turned himself into police and was charged with one count of assault before being released to appear in court on August 5.

Perez took to micro-blogging site Twitter about the alleged attack within moments, writing: 'I was assaulted by Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas and his security guards. I am bleeding. Please, I need to file a police report. No joke.'

Hours later, the rapper set up his own Twitter account and put his side of the story across.

'Perez Hilton is a liar,' he said in one Tweet, then filmed a short video clip to further deny the assault claims.

'I hit you Perez? Come on dude! I didn't hit you,' he said.

He added: 'They are lies. Shame on you. Shame on your behaviour. That's just messed up.'

Will.i.am, real name William Adams, said the argument started when his bandmate Fergie asked Perez, 'Hey, do you have a problem with me?'

Perez was said to have responded: 'No, I just don't like your record.'

Perez has frequently criticised Fergie's fashion sense on his blog, labelling her 'fugly', which mean 'f**king ugly', and has slammed the Black Eyed Peas' latest album The E.N.D. and track Boom Boom Pow.

Later that evening, Will.i.am allegedly approached Perez outside the Cobra club, telling him 'never write things about my band on your website again'.

Perez admitted he hit back with several slurs: 'I told him, "And you know what, I don't need to respect you. And you're a f**got. You're gay and stop being such a f**got.'

After seeing Will.i.am's video, Perez responded with a video of his own.

Showing off what looked like a black eye he claimed that after a number of run-ins with Will.i.am throughout the night, he was assaulted by the star's manager Mario.

'What happened to me in Toronto happened to me as a human being and it should never happen to anyone,' he said.

'It was not a random fan that hit me. You're a f**king liar. You're shameful, you're disgusting, you're a coward.'

He then broke down in tears as he ended the video.

In another video, Perez hits out at the group as a whole.

He said: 'I have lost all respect for all of you and the Black Eyed Peas. And Fergie, youre fugly.'

Perez's claims were clear to see in his Twitter posts.

Kelly Rowland snubbed her former Destiny's Child bandmate Michelle Williams by refusing to walk down the red carpet with her, it has been reported.
Both stars arrived at the same time to Richard Branson's pre-Wimbledon party in London but Rowland objected to being seen together, according to The Sun.

Rowland is currently in the UK promoting new single 'When Love Take Over', which as claimed by midweek sales is expected to top the chart this Sunday.

Williams, who joined the 'Independent Women' group in 2000, begins a stint as Roxie Hart in the West End musical Chicago next month.

The order requires that Brown and Rihanna stay at least 50 yards from each, except at industry events when the distance is reduced to 10 yards.

The judge also told Rihanna it's not a one-way order and she will be in violation if she gets closer to Brown than the order allows.

Multi-platinum rapper Lil' Wayne was in Yuma, Arizona Tuesday afternoon (June 23) to attend a pre-trial update in relation to his January 2008 arrest outside of the city.

The Young Money boss was ordered to be present at this preliminary hearing regarding the investigation into drug & weapons charges he faces.

The rapper previously pleaded not guilty of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of dangerous drugs and weapons misconduct.

Wayne and two members of his entourage were arrested in January of 2008 at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 8, just east of Yuma.

Upon searching his tour bus, authorities reportedly found cocaine, Ecstasy and a handgun.

Though the weapon was registered in Florida, Wayne was charged for taking across state lines.

During Tuesday's hearing Wayne attorney, James Tilson told the presiding Superior Court judge that the U.S. Border Patrol has yet to honor the defense's request for records tied to the arrest.

According to Tilson, border officials told the Yuma County Attorney that they have no intention of releasing the training record of the drug-sniffing dogs used during the search.

Wayne's next court appearance is August 11.

Before then, his attorney plans on submitting a new request for any video footage captured by border cameras on the day of the arrest.

So far, the Recording Industry Association of America has brought more than 35,000 lawsuits against alleged illegal file-sharers. But in the only case to go to trial to date, a federal jury on Thursday found 32-year-old Minnesota mother Jammie Thomas-ra**et liable for file-sharing, fining her $1.92 million for allegedly downloading 24 songs.

Thomas-ra**et was found guilty in an earlier case in which she was ordered to pay $222,000 for the same songs. The judge in that case declared a mistrial, and Thomas-ra**et opted for a new trial instead of settling with the Recording Industry Association of America, unlike the 30,000-plus others who've been sued by the organization.

According to Wired, Thomas-ra**et, who has proclaimed her innocence all along, was fined $80,000 for each song in Thursday's ruling. In the latest case, she testified that her four children might have used her computer to access the file-sharing service Kazaa. In the earlier trial, she believed someone had hacked into her WiFi connection, even though she did not own a WiFi router.

The original suit against Thomas-ra**et, then a single mother of two, was brought in 2006. While the Copyright Act allows for a fine of up to $150,000 per infringement, the average payment in the thousands of settlement cases that have settled out of court is around $3,500. In late 2008, after five years of launching highly unpopular suits against music consumers, the RIAA abandoned the tactic and announced that it would instead work with Internet service providers to curb the practice.

Among the half-hour worth of songs that Thomas-ra**et allegedly purloined are Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" and "November Rain," Janet Jackson's "Let's Wait Awhile," Gloria Estefan's "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You," the Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris," Journey's "Faithfully" and "Don't Stop Believing," Sarah McLachlan's "Building a Mystery," Aerosmith's "Cryin'," Linkin Park's "One Step Closer," Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me," No Doubt's "Bathwater" and "Hella Good," and Destiny's Child's "Bills, Bills, Bills."

Thomas-ra**et testified during the trial that she hadn't even heard of the now-shuttered Kazaa before the case and that her children or ex-boyfriend could have downloaded the songs without her knowledge.

"The only thing I can say is 'Good luck getting it from me,' " Thomas-ra**et said, according to the Star Tribune. The Minneapolis newspaper described her as looking tearful at first, then resolute in response to the verdict from the jury, which deliberated for five hours before reaching its conclusion. Her lawyer said he is considering an appeal or possible settlement in the latest case.

Exporters can expect tougher international competition as global trends change from preferential treatment to more reciprocal trading arrangements, said Trade Minister Mariano Browne. He said despite this, government was working to provide exporters with advantages, such as, easier market access, more competitive tax rates, competitive energy costs, a skilled labour force and a well-educated population as key to successful global market penetration.

Browne said that as members of Caricom, exporters from T&T have immediate access to a market of six million people, which will increase to 20 million if Haiti and the Dominican Republic are included. Businesses here will soon have free access to an even larger market of more than 90 million, since we recently concluded bilateral trade agreements with Col****ia, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Costa Rica. Browne said despite having access to some of the largest global markets, the recent Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between Cariforum and the European Union (EU) reflects a shift in global trade away from preferential to a more competitive reciprocal trading arrangement, which means exporters will have to be more competitive.

He was speaking yesterday at the second Asian trade and investment mission to T&T at the Old Fire Station Building, Abercr****y Street, Port-of-Spain. He said T&T has also expanded its partnership with India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. In recognising the growing healthy trade between T&T and the Far East countries of India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Browne said India is the fourth leading source of foreign direct investment into T&T after the USA, UK and Germany. I urge both our business communities to make greater use of the investment promotion and protection agreement signed between T&T and India in 2007.

This trade mission, the second such from India, has been scheduled to coincide with the Trade and Investment Convention (TIC), which is organised by the T&T Manufacturers Association (TTMA). TIC will run from June 24-27 at the Centre of Excellence, Macoya. Browne gave statistics to show deepening trade ties between T&T and Bangladesh and T&T and India. With respect to Bangladesh, we experienced a trade surplus of approximately US$16 million, more than 90 per cent of the items iron and steel products. In 2007, we exported almost US$475 million in liquefied natural gas (LNG) to India, which accounted for the first trade surplus with India in over ten years, he said.
