Beenie Man - Contributed

One of the biggest dancehall acts in Jamaica today, 'The Doctor', Beenie Man will take the stage for the 16th staging of the Caribbean's largest one-night roots reggae festival, Rebel Salute, set for Saturday, January 17, at the Port Kaiser Sports Club in St Elizabeth.

Beenie Man will appear as 'Ras Moses' and is expected to illustrate his mastery at all types of Jamaican music as well as give emphasis to his strong Rastafarian consciousness with powerful hits such as Product of the Ghetto, Progress, Come Clear yuh Heart and Mama Cry.

Although the affable and charming deejay Beenie Man has graced the Rebel Salute stage several times, having made impromptu appearances over the years, this is the first time he is officially billed as a performer on Rebel Salute.

It's not very often that a hardcore dancehall artiste finds his way on to Rebel Salute, a massive roots affair which celebrates Rastafarian lifestyle, culture, cuisine, spirituality and the best of Jamaican roots reggae.

But Beenie Man is no purist dancehall act.

Quality of show

Asked why after 15 years he has billed Beenie Man for Rebel Salute 16, promoter of Rebel Salute, entertainer Tony Rebel had this to say: "Beenie Man always wanted to perform on Rebel Salute. He is often in attendance at Rebel Salute and sometimes touch the stage. So him tell me to put him on Rebel Salute. But Beenie Man loves music, all types of music. He sees and respects the quality of show and as a good entertainer he wants to be a part of that. I saw him perform on Western Consciousness and other shows, so I know that he has a body of work well suited for the Rebel Salute stage."

Several hardcore dancehall artistes who have performed on Rebel Salute in previous years include Assassin, Busy Signal, Demarco, Wayne Marshall, Flourgon, Michigan and Smiley and Charlie Chaplin.

According to Tony Rebel, "Rebel Salute is about love and unity, not confrontation and war. Although the genres are separated, it's Jamaican music, and it's a part of us. We have to find ways to incorporate dancehall and dancehall artistes when we celebrate positive Jamaican music. But because of the royal nature of Rebel Salute, we have to make sure that the artistes we select for the show live up to the standards of Rebel Salute."

Other dancehall acts set to perform on Rebel Salute 2009 include Lady G, Courtney Melody, Sanchez and roots-dancehall artistes Capleton, Queen Ifrica, I-Octane and Chuck Fendah.

VIBE Magazine Remembered: 1993-2009

VIBE

As one music pioneer leaves us, another who helped chronicle the pop music landscape has also died. It was announced today that VIBE has shut down.

The magazine, founded by Quincy Jones, was the only music title, aside from Rap-Up, that I read on a regular basis. It was one of the first magazines I subscribed to as a teenager and remains one of the few I still subscribe to.

As a fellow publisher, I understand the amount of hard work and money that go into maintaining a magazine and the challenges print publications face in these tough times. I encourage you to support your favorite magazines. When you see them on the newsstand, buy them instead of just reading them there.

VIBE paved the way for many urban music titles, including Rap-Up, and did so with class and sophistication. The impact it had on hip-hop and R&B culture is indelible.

Former Grand Hustle member Alfamega has broken his silence on the whole DEA Informant issue. He claims he has never snithced and that he's disappointed in T.I. "I caught a case, pleaded guilty," Alfa said about his 1990's arrest. "Received my time. I was doing my time. All the extra stuff dudes' talking about...Anybody that know me, if I had did something on somebody in this city, and people knew that I was accused of doing what they accusing me of right now? Somebody woulda been stepped to me about that.

Like I said, Alfamega ain't never snitched on nobody. He done lied on somebody, but he ain't never snitched. And we ain't even gotta say Alfamega, 'cause y'all got my name out there now: Cedric Zellers...You do 85 percent of your time in the Feds. I really wasn't supposed to do the whole sentence, but I got into an altercation in the last prison I was in. So they took some good time away. They gave me 60 extra days...I'm older than Tip. I'm from the Westside, he from the Westside. Where I come from, if you have a label of being a snitch, you gon' get dealt with. So how am I able to still walk around the city by myself? So, it is what it is, you know. I'm gonna make a statement too: I don't hate Tip. I'm disappointed, 'cause that's supposed to be my partner. And I ain't talking about on no business tip. That's my partner. I rode for dude, like 24/7. I put my family to the side sometimes to ride for dude."

omg-spacer-1.0.0.gifomg-spacer-1.0.0.gifPrivate and public funerals have been set for the late Michael Jackson, according to CNN.

Hs body will return to his Neverland Ranch for a public viewing on Friday, CNN reports. (Jackson's brothers Jackie, Jermaine and Tito visited the grounds over the weekend and a delivery truck was spotted there Tuesday dropping off boxes.)

A private memorial service is slated for Sunday, according to CNN.

There is still no word on where Jackson will be buried, but his hometown of Gary, Ind., is hoping the family to send him there.

"I believe that his body will lie in state in Gary, Ind.," Gary Mayor Rudy Clay told Chicago radio station WGN Tuesday. "Now, it may not happen, but I believe it will."

At the very least, Clay said he hopes Jackson's body will be taken to Gary for a July 10 memorial service at U.S. Steel Works ballpark.

The memorial would be "fit for the prince of peace and a memorial that's fit for Gary, Indiana's favorite son, the greatest entertainer that ever lived."

Gary officials may even propose that that the singer be buried near a proposed Jackson family museum and a performing arts center, Clay's spokeswoman Lalosa Burns said.

"The mayor had spoken with a contact of the Jackson family and expressed our interest in having that to be a part of the history of this great family," Burns said. "We have not received confirmation on that."

On Tuesday, fans gathered for a public tribute to Jackson at Harlem's Apollo Theater, where the singer performed as a child.

J Naz from Harbour View, Kingston, is the lone female DJ who is on the hunt for the over-two million dollars up for grabs in the exciting 2009 Heineken Green Synergy competition.

DJ Naz... I love mixing, and it is a competition which gives you the opportunity to really showcase your talent

She was very impressive at the Kingston auditions where she blew the crowd away with some really awesome mixing. In the opinion of many, DJ Naz did much better than her male counterparts and is a real threat in this year's competition.

Christened Nazaria Taylor, she comes from a strong musical background being the daughter of Don Taylor, the former manager of Bob Marley. Her mother is Joy White, popularly known for her hit song First Cut, which was produced by Donovan Germaine.

While going to her neighbourhood school, Donald Quarrie High, Naz used to entertain her peers by playing the drums. "I used to play the drums a lot, especially when we used to perform Busta Rhymes song Really Want To Party With Me at school concerts," she said.

After leaving secondary school, with a desire to journey into the music business, she decided to study studio engineering at a school in Kingston.

She was fascinated by the idea of being a disc jockey so she entered into that field as a member of an all-female team, on a sound system called Chemical X based in Meadowbrook.

She was taught the art of mixing by her good friend Pablo, who is deep in the sound system world. "I have learnt a lot from him. He told me that anybody can mix dancehall music but not everyone can mix different genres of music, so I try to practise that and it has helped me a lot," she said. "I am still learning, though."

Reminiscing on the first time her team played out at an event, she said, "It was at Bembe . it was four of us as girls and we were very nervous but we created a big vibes, the dancers came up on stage and the vibes was just mad."

As to her reason for entering the Heineken Green Synergy competition, DJ Naz explained, "I love mixing, and it is a competition which gives you the opportunity to really showcase your talent. It also gives you invaluable exposure which helps you to take your career to greater heights. I entered last year but I didn't go through. This time around, I am more prepared, more confident; I have nothing to lose, really."

As to who she admires as Disc Jockeys she said, "From the get-go I rate DJ Sunshine I saw Kurt Riley at some parties and him bad. Collin Hinds is bad too. On the international scene, DJ Shorty is my favourite."

DJ Naz is presently putting together her mix CD, along with all the other entrants who have advanced from the Green Synergy auditions held in Kingston, Mandeville, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Port Antonio.

June 30, 2009. MediaTakeOut.com just received some STUNNING news, according to the head of Michael Jacksons largest fan site, 12 Michael Jackson fans were so distraught of Michaels passing that the committed suicide.

And it gets worse. According to Gary Taylor, president and owner of MJJcommunity.com, he expects more fans to take their own life. Gary is quoted as saying, I know there has been an increase, I now believe the figure is 12. I believe there may have been one Briton who has taken their life." He added, It is a serious situation that these people are going through but Michael Jackson would never want this. He would want them to live."

And MediaTakeOut.com has learned that the number of fan suicides is likely to hit its peak after the funeral. Gary explained, I think the funeral will be where the reality kicks in that he is gone and won't be coming back, there will be a huge depression in the fan community when that happens.

This whole situation is just getting more and more sad.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Michael Jackson knew "exactly how his fate would be played out" and feared his death would echo that of Elvis Presley, Lisa Marie Presley wrote in an online blog posted Friday morning.

Presley -- the daughter of Elvis, the "King of Rock," and the ex-wife of Jackson, the "King of Pop" -- wrote on her MySpace page that she wanted "to say now what I have never said before because I want the truth out there for once." Her publicist confirmed Presley wrote the blog.

She said her short marriage to Jackson -- from May 1994 until January 1996 -- "was not 'a sham' as is being reported in the press," but she divorced him because she was "in over my head in trying" to save Jackson "from the inevitable, which is what has just happened."

Jackson talked with her about his death during "a deep conversation" 14 years ago about "the circumstances of my father's death."

"At some point he paused, he stared at me very intensely and he stated with an almost calm certainty, 'I am afraid that I am going to end up like him, the way he did,' " Presley wrote.

"I promptly tried to deter him from the idea, at which point he just shrugged his shoulders and nodded almost matter of fact as if to let me know, he knew what he knew and that was kind of that."

That conversation haunted Presley as she watched television coverage of Jackson's death Thursday, she said.

"I am sitting here watching on the news [as] an ambulance leaves the driveway of his home, the big gates, the crowds outside the gates, the coverage, the crowds outside the hospital, the cause of death and what may have led up to it and the memory of this conversation hit me, as did the unstoppable tears," she wrote.

"A predicted ending by him, by loved ones and by me, but what I didn't predict was how much it was going to hurt when it finally happened."

Elvis Presley collapsed in the bathroom of his Memphis, Tennessee, mansion -- Graceland -- on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42. While his death was ruled the result of an irregular heartbeat, the autopsy report was sealed amid accusations that abuse of prescription drugs caused the problem.

"As I sit here overwhelmed with sadness, reflection and confusion at what was my biggest failure to date, watching on the news almost play by play the exact scenario I saw happen on August 16, 1977, happening again right now with Michael (A sight I never wanted to see again) just as he predicted, I am truly, truly gutted," she wrote.

"I wanted to 'save him'," she wrote. "I wanted to save him from the inevitable, which is what has just happened."

"The hardest decision I have ever had to make, which was to walk away and let his fate have him, even though I desperately loved him and tried to stop or reverse it somehow," Presley wrote.

Their marriage, which some suggested was only to help Jackson's image, was real, she said.

"It was an unusual relationship, yes, where two unusual people who did not live or know a 'normal life' found a connection, perhaps with some suspect timing on his part," she wrote. "Nonetheless, I do believe he loved me as much as he could love anyone and I loved him very much."

Presley called Jackson "an incredibly dynamic force and power that was not to be underestimated."

"When he used it for something good, it was the best and when he used it for something bad, It was really, REALLY bad," she wrote.

Presley's blog entry ended with a thank you to those who would read it.

"I really needed to say this right now, thanks for listening."

farrah_fawcett.jpg
A winsome smile, tousled hair and unfettered sensuality were Farrah Fawcett's trademarks as a sex symbol and 1970s TV star in "Charlie's Angels."

But as her life drew to a close, she captivated the public in a far different way: as a cancer patient who fought for, then surrendered, her treasured privacy to document her struggle with the disease and inspire others.

Fawcett, 62, died Thursday morning at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, nearly three years after being diagnosed with anal cancer. Ryan O'Neal, the longtime companion who returned to her side when she became ill, was with her.

"After a long and brave battle with cancer, our beloved Farrah has passed away," O'Neal said. "Although this is an extremely difficult time for her family and friends, we take comfort in the beautiful times that we shared with Farrah over the years and the knowledge that her life brought joy to so many people around the world."

In the end, Fawcett sought to offer more than that, re-emerging in the spotlight with a new gravitas.

In "Farrah's Story," which aired last month, she made public her painful treatments and dispiriting setbacks from shaving her golden locks before chemotherapy could claim them to undergoing experimental treatments in Germany.

"Her big message to people is don't give up. No matter what they say to you, keep fighting," Alana Stewart, who filmed Fawcett as she underwent treatment, said last month. NBC estimated the May 15, 2009, broadcast drew nearly 9 million viewers.

In the documentary, she also recounted her efforts to unmask the source of leaks from her UCLA Medical Center records, which led a hospital employee to plead guilty to violating a federal privacy law for selling celebrities' information to the National Enquirer.

"There are no words to express the deep sense of loss that I feel," Stewart said Thursday. "For 30 years, Farrah was much more than a friend. She was my sister, and although I will miss her terribly, I know in my heart that she will always be there as that angel on the shoulder of everyone who loved her."

Other "Charlie's Angels" stars also paid tribute.

"Farrah had courage, she had strength, and she had faith. And now she has peace as she rests with the real angels," Jaclyn Smith said.

Said Cheryl Ladd: "She was incredibly brave, and God will be welcoming her with open arms."

Kate Jackson said she would remember Fawcett's "kindness, her cutting, dry wit and, of course, her beautiful smile. Today when you think of Farrah remember her smiling because that is exactly how she wanted to be remembered, smiling."

Fawcett became a sensation in 1976 as one-third of the crime-fighting trio in "Charlie's Angels." A poster of her in a clingy, red swimsuit sold in the millions and her full, layered hairstyle became all the rage, with girls and women across America mimicking the look.

She left the show after one season but had a flop on the big screen with "Somebody Killed Her Husband." She turned to more serious roles in the 1980s and 1990s, winning praise playing an abused wife in "The Burning Bed."

Born Feb. 2, 1947, in Corpus Christi, Texas, she was named Mary Farrah Leni Fawcett by her mother, who said she added the Farrah because it sounded good with Fawcett. As a student at the University of Texas at Austin, she was voted one of the 10 most beautiful people on the campus and her photos were eventually spotted by movie publicist David Mirisch, who suggested she pursue a film career.

She appeared in a string of commercials, including one where she shaved quarterback Joe Namath, and in such TV shows as "That Girl," "The Flying Nun," "I Dream of Jeannie" and "The Partridge Family."

She was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006. According to the American Cancer Society Web site, an estimated 5,290 Americans, most of them adults over 35, will be diagnosed with that type of cancer this year, and there will be 710 deaths.

As she underwent treatment, she enlisted the help of O'Neal, who was the father of her now 24-year-old son, Redmond.

This month, O'Neal said he asked Fawcett to marry him and she agreed. They would wed "as soon as she can say yes," he said, but it never happened.

Fawcett, Jackson and Smith made up the original "Angels," the sexy, police-trained trio of martial arts experts who took their assignments from a rich, mysterious boss named Charlie (John Forsythe, who was never seen on camera but whose distinctive voice was heard on speaker phone.)

The program debuted in September 1976, the height of what some critics derisively referred to as television's "jiggle show" era, and it gave each of the actresses ample opportunity to show off their figures as they disguised themselves as hookers and strippers to solve crimes.

Backed by a clever publicity campaign, Fawcett then billed as Farrah Fawcett-Majors because of her marriage to "The Six Million Dollar Man" star Lee Majors quickly became the most popular Angel of all.

Her face helped sell T-shirts, lunch boxes, shampoo, wigs and even a novelty plumbing device called Farrah's faucet. Her flowing blond hair, pearly white smile and trim, shapely body made her a favorite with male viewers in particular.

The public and the show's producer, Spelling-Goldberg, were shocked when she announced after the series' first season that she was leaving television's No. 5-rated series to star in feature films. (Ladd became the new "Angel" on the series.)

But film turned out to be a platform where Fawcett was never able to duplicate her TV success. Her first star vehicle, the comedy-mystery "Somebody Killed Her Husband," flopped and Hollywood cynics cracked that it should have been titled "Somebody Killed Her Career."

The actress had also been in line to star in "Foul Play" for Columbia Pictures. But the studio opted for Goldie Hawn instead. Fawcett told the Associated Press in 1979 that Spelling-Goldberg sabotaged her, warning "all the studios that that they would be sued for damages if they employed me."

She finally reached an agreement to appear in three episodes of "Charlie's Angels" a season, an experience she called "painful."

After a short string of unsuccessful movies, Fawcett found critical success in the 1984 television movie "The Burning Bed," which earned her an Emmy nomination.

As further proof of her acting credentials, Fawcett appeared off-Broadway in "Extremities," playing a woman who seeks revenge against her attacker after being raped in her own home. She repeated the role in the 1986 film version.

Not content to continue playing victims, she switched type to take on roles as a murderous mother in the 1989 true-crime story "Small Sacrifices" and a tough lawyer on the trail of a thief in 1992's "Criminal Behavior."

She also starred in biographies of Nazi-hunter Beate Klarsfeld and photographer Margaret Bourke-White.

In 1995, at age 50, Fawcett stirred controversy posing partly nude for Playboy magazine. The following year, she starred in a Playboy video, "All of Me," in which she was equally unclothed while she sculpted and painted.

Fawcett's most unfortunate career moment may have been a 1997 appearance on David Letterman's show, when her disjointed, rambling answers led many to speculate that she was on drugs. She denied that, blaming her strange behavior on questionable advice from her mother to be playful and have a good time.

In September 2006, Fawcett, who at 59 still maintained a strict regimen of tennis and paddleball, began to feel strangely exhausted. She underwent two weeks of tests that revealed the cancer.

"I do not want to die of this disease. So I say to God, `It is seriously time for a miracle,'" she said in "Farrah's Story."

It was an amazing show. The thing was just days away from being perfected. It was incredible, said magician Ed Alonzo, who was hired to work on the production. A nude drunk man who got stuck trying to climb in a clothes dryer says he can't explain what made him do it.

Dave Chapman said he staretd looking for a pair of underpants in his dryer after deciding to change his clothes following a drinking session with friends.

He said: "By that time, I'd had a fair bit to drink; I don't know what flaming possessed me to get in it.

"I was trying to find these undies when everything just got stuck."

Mr Chapman, from Waipopo, near Timaru, New Zealand, who was nude below the waist, managed to fit his head, shoulders and arms into the dryer in his search.

"I thought my undies were there, but obviously not," he told the Timaru Herald.

He managed to get himself wedged in the 30cm-wide opening of the hot, recently used dryer up to his armpits.

He said: "I was panicking because there was no air."

The situation got even worse when the dryer, fell to the floor, on top of him.

Still fully exposed - it took his friends, ambulance staff, a police officer and the Washdyke and Temuka fire brigades to free Mr Chapman.

Parts had to be taken off the dryer and Mr Chapman lifted horizontally and then pulled from the dryer.

If you had a wish to meet three people from the zone in real life., who would it be and why? This question has been troubling me for the longest while, and I keep asking my self this question all the time.

It appears as though the peace process between rival camps headed by Vybz Kartel and Mavado has officially been breached. Over the past few weeks we has observed a phletoria of verbal insults being hurled back and forth by the two entertainers on some of the lastest rhythm compilations namely: Day Rave, Self Defense and Silent River.

Further investigation by our team to reveal what could have caused the fallout led us to an incident that occured a few days ago between Portmore Empire's wingman Jeffrey Hype, Mavado and members of his entourage.

According to Jeffrey Hype of Portmore Empire, "Mi deh outside a di studio gate a hold a medz an when mi look up di road mi see di black range a come. Anyways mi neva pay it nuh mind cause mi know a di singer, when it reach near, mi see it slow down and the window wind down and Chase Cross start shout a bag a tings, a call me p*ssy hole and how mi must go s*ck mi mada.
After dem pass mi jump inna mi jeep and drive di opposite way and we buck up round di road. Dem start agrue and mi rush dem and dem run. Bout ten minutes later mi get a call seh dem want mi up a station, dem claim seh mi pull weapon pon dem and mi damage the singer Range".

When we asked about the accusations, Hype denied the claims, dismissing them as being false and malicious and said he never pulled any weapon nor did he touched the singer's Range Rover. This was later confirmed by the lawmen who could not find any evidence of a dent or scratch on both vehicles.

"When mi reach di station mi see the Range park up and the singer stand up beside the Police dem, so mi start walk towards dem and as mi pass him step out and tump mi inna mi mouth then di whole a di Police dem grab on pon mi and no man no touch di singer all now. Ten minutes later dem a ask mi if mi wah press charges against di singer, so mi just seh, 'No Man Everything Good!'".

"Chu di bwoy stand up beside him corrupt Police fren dem him get weh, but tell him me seh mi want a rematch cause him violate mi and it was an unfair fight. Yuh nuh hear him all sing song seh him tump mi inna mi face, so a nuh lie mi a tell" - Hype added.

Efforts by our team to reach Mavado for his take on the story proved futile but we will keep you posted as the saga unfolds.

Who is Serani? musician, singer, songwriter, a jack off all trades . Craig Serani Marsh at a young age developed a passion for music and one day decided he and his two life long friends which also shared the same passion would form a production company called DASECA. DASACA which is the acrynyoms of the founding members names was formed in 2001, Unfortunately at the time it was only a dream, being ridiculed for paying more attention to music than school serani held fast to his dreams and did not let go. His first major debut was the production of Anger management riddim which was at a stand still for a long period of time, not being known in the industry major artistes were reluctant to record on a riddim of a NO NAME producer. As the riddim began to create a buzz in the dancehall Industry, artistes began to beat down the door of Daseca productions studio. This very riddim was the rise to fame for Mavado hailing from the gully with Real McCoy. With the help of Bounty Killer serani now had his foot in the door and refuse to go down without a fight. Focusing more on FINDING THOSE MELODIES serani was more into production at the time and took it very seriously.

Serani has co-produced the first two singles on Sean Pauls platinum album Trinity, including We Be Burning, which was the first released single. The We be Burning track helped Trinity smash a Jamaican record of 107,000 copies sold in the first week.

Serani decided to take his first stab at singing while producing tracks for Mavado adding a falsetto hook to the heartfelt 2006 single Dying. When the song became a hit, Serani took it as a cue to start making his own tracks and, in 2007, his debut single, Doh, shot to the top of the Jamaican charts and broke him onto U.S. radio stations such as New Yorks Hot 97. Now firmly established as an artist in his own right, he has followed with a string of successful singles including She Loves Me, Study People and No Games, his biggest hit to date. The track, which meshes the pulsing throb of dancehall with an emotive R&B hook, has landed him on radio stations across the U.S. as well as the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart.

Serani has sold thousands of downloads and ringtones for months, and now No Games has replaced Bob Marleys anthem, that sells an average of 5,500 a week in downloads on iTunes.

No Games is actually still gaining in spins across the country, said Seranis manager. This record just wont go away. Its still getting added to playlists in many states across the country every week so it continues to spread.

Serani is looking beyond the Jamaican market and straight at the world. Im a Jamaican artist but I just make music, period, he says. I always try to keep that dancehall influence but I dont need a dancehall beat for my music to be Jamaican and pop at the same time. All I need is my voice. I open my throat and you hear Jamaica shining.

Popular dancer Marlon Overmarz Hardy (creator of the 2008 hit dance Nuh Linga and also the Raging Bull dance a few years ago), has reportedly left the Ravers Clavers dance crew which is headed by Ding Dong, and formed his own dance crew called Above A Dem, which includes Mundo, Peanut, Pelpa, Yummy and Dollar Coin - all formerly of Ravers Clavers.

Overmarz told the press recently that he left Ravers Clavers from all the way back in April of this year, basically because he wasnt getting all the credit for the dances he was creating and the things that he was doing. The Nuh Linga dance move - which he created and which received worldwide popularity in August 2008 after Usain Bolt used it to celebrate his track victories at the Olympic games - was said to be a sore point which helped to cause the split, as Overmarz felt that Ding Dong was claiming the dance move for himself when he (Overmarz) was the creator.

Look out for more from Overmarz, specifically the Nuh Behavior dance move which he created recently.

Did the lyrics of up & coming dancehall deejay Wasp cause the police to lock down a community dance recently? Wasp was reportedly at a popular street dance in the Grants Pen Community of Kingston on Sunday night (June 21),when a group of police demanded that the music be turned down.

Selector Boom Boom reportedly complied, but it is said that Wasp then performed and that really got the lawmen angry. While Wasp was on stage performing his hit single Unfair (Officer), the police reportedly ordered that the event be stopped immediately.

Was it the lyrics from the Unfair (Officer) song that angered the policemen?

After being arrested and held for questioning earlier this week, reportedly on suspicion of fraud charges, dancehall duo Patrick Curly Lox Gaynor and Paul Tu-Lox Gaynor (more popularly known as Twin of Twins) were bailed on Wednesday, June 24, and have issued an official statement on the matter. According to the twins, the money in question had long been returned to the complainant, but had no idea he had already taken the matter to the police, and that there was now an outstanding warrant for the arrest. According to them, when they were arrested, they explained to the police and asked them to call the complainant to confirm, but they repeatedly refused to do so, choosing instead to mock and jeer them with lines taken from their Stir It Up series.

Years Pass, but Brooke Greenberg Remains a Toddler. No One Can Explain How or Why

Brooke Greenberg is the size of an infant, with the mental capacity of a toddler.

She turned 16 in January.

"Why doesn't she age?" Howard Greenberg, 52, asked of his daughter. "Is she the fountain of youth?"

Such questions are why scientists are fascinated by Brooke. Among the many documented instances of children who fail to grow or develop in some way, Brooke's case may be unique, according to her doctor, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine pediatrician Lawrence Pakula, in Baltimore.

"Many of the best-known names in medicine, in their experience ... had not seen anyone who matched up to Brooke," Pakula said. "She is always a surprise."

Brooke hasn't aged in the conventional sense. Dr. Richard Walker of the University of South Florida College of Medicine, in Tampa, says Brooke's body is not developing as a coordinated unit, but as independent parts that are out of sync. She has never been diagnosed with any known genetic syndrome or chromosomal abnormality that would help explain why.

ht_scan0005_090619_mn.jpg

16 yrs old Brooke

Watch Brooke's story on "20/20" FRIDAY at 10 p.m. ET.

In a recent paper for the journal "Mechanisms of Ageing and Development," Walker and his co-authors, who include Pakula and All Children's Hospital (St. Petersburg, Fla.) geneticist Maxine Sutcliffe chronicled a baffling range of inconsistencies in Brooke's aging process. She still has baby teeth at 16, for instance. And her bone age is estimated to be more like 10 years old.

"There've been very minimal changes in Brooke's brain," Walker said. "Various parts of her body, rather than all being at the same stage, seem to be disconnected."

Brooke's mother, Melanie Greenberg, 48, sees a different picture. "She loves to shop," Greenberg said. "Just like a woman."

Brooke rides in a stroller while her mom shops for clothes in the infant sections of department stores near their home in a Baltimore suburb. That Brooke is in her mid-teens is so mind-boggling that if another mother with a toddler asks Greenberg how old Brooke is, she usually doesn't try to explain.

"My system always has been to turn years into months," Greenberg said. "So, if someone asked today, I might say, she's 16 months old."

By some estimates, next year, Tiger Woods is slated to hit a remarkable goal. He will become the first athlete to have accumulated $1 billion in career earnings. That's a reason to smile.

50 Cent

'Rest in peace to Michael Jackson,' Fif says in one of two dropped Friday morning.

50 Cent is the first artist to pay tribute to Michael Jackson in song since the King of Pop died Thursday. Fif released the first two records from his mixtapeForever King on Friday morning (June 26).

The first, "Respect It or Check It N---a," is vintage hard-core 50. He talks about coming up in the streets as a youngster and how he has evolved, and adds at the end, "Rest in peace to Michael Jackson ... You n---as need me, man. I might have to start moonwalking. A couple of dance moves and sh--, might be some sh-- called 'Billie Jean Is My Lover.' I'm back, n---a!"

The second song is called "Where You Are," and it takes directly from Jackson's historic catalog. The G-Unit General raps over the 1972 track "I Wanna Be Where You Are."

"They say I ain't lyrical, they say I ain't a miracle/ I say some hard sh--, so they say I ain't spiritual," the self-proclaimed King of Rap rhymes. "They act like they know God better than me/ I know 'God Allah,' he used to pump crack up the streets."

50 goes on to vent about those in the 'hood doubting him because of his over-the-top financial status. The Southside, Queens, native then gives way to the King of Pop, and we hear Jackson's timeless vocals.

"Can it be I stayed away too long?/ Did I leave your mind when I was gone?/ It's not my thing trying to get back/ But this time let me tell you where I'm at/ You don't have to worry 'cause I'm coming/ Back to where I should have always stayed/ And now I've heard the maybe to your story/ And it's enough love for me to stay."

Don't miss "A Celebration of Michael Jackson on MTV," airing at 6 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

Ask Mavado one too many questions about his music's violent content, and he becomes somewhat defensive.

Strange really, as he branded himself as a gangster, earned fame on the back of bad-man hits such as Last Night and Top Shotta, and originally rose to prominence with hit single, Real McKoy, which rode on a riddim, aptly titled - wait for it - Anger Management! (Ok, that one was just a co-incidence.)

As a result, the Jamaican deejay - who recently performed a sell-out show at London's Stratford Rex - has earned his fair share of criticism, from those who have been unimpressed by the tales of gun-toting and varying degrees of violence, that feature on his debut album, Gangsta For Life: The Symphony Of David Brooks. Still, the popular artist - real name David Constantine Brooks - remains unfazed.

critics

"I have a whole heap of critics, but I don't really watch them things," he says. "This business is a journey and once you're going up, people will want to bring you down. But if anyone feels that my music is too violent, they don't have to listen to it. The reason I call myself a 'gangster for life' is because I've come through some terrible things. So many of my friends died along the way, but I made it through. I don't call myself a gangster because I go around killing people! I just mean that I've come through a lot of struggles - I spent time in jail - and I made it through."

protest

He declined to reveal why he spent time in jail, but continued: "What I talk about in my music is real. But some people just don't like dancehall coz they know that is we from the gully who created it. They don't like the fact that dancehall allows people from the ghetto to prosper."

Granted, recent years have seen somewhat of an anti-dancehall climate. With numerous reggae shows being cancelled at the eleventh hour, either by officials who feared violence amongst concert-goers, or as a result of protesters who campaigned to stop shows going ahead, some dancehall fans may well feel that the music gets an unnecessary hard time.

But even Mavado can't deny that much of his music- or at least, the tunes that have earned him notoriety so far- have possessed a gangster-driven lyrical content. Nevertheless, he refutes the suggestion that his music encourages violence.

"Nah, there's no truth inna that, babes. Some films and TV shows feature violence. Surely they must be more influential than the content of any song? But nobody complains about gangster films. I'm not the first person to come and sing gangster songs and I certainly don't encourage any violence. I don't see why people wanna talk negatively about my lyrics, but gangster films get promoted on big billboards so that everybody knows about them. Music is about enjoyment and entertainment, just like a good film."

He goes on: "If you really wanna know about Mavado, you need to listen to my album and you'll hear what I'm about. I'm a good person. People try and make me out to be a bad person and they don't even know me. My music isn't all gangster lyrics. I do songs for different people because music doesn't have any limits. I make songs for gangsters, for the streets, for the girls"

Ah yes. How could I forget about his album track, Squeeze Breast? On this particular ode to women, Mavado sings of a girl who wants him to "squeeze her breast dem like di trigger of my gun." Who said romance was dead?

"The whole ah di girls love that song," Mavado laughs. "It's not about telling girls to do anything bad. It's just about squeezing up the girl dem breast and having sex. There's nothing wrong with that."

Romance?

Yes Mavado, but really: squeeze her breasts like the trigger of your gun? Couldn't you come up with a more appropriate simile? Where is the love?

He laughs, "What about Heartbeat? That's a love song. I do love the ladies, but I'm not really a romance kind of artist."

We gathered. But yes, Heartbeat is a pleasant song, free of expletives and any violent content. And as he reveals that there is a "special lady" in his life, the father-of-two is also somewhat of a family man. Do his seven-year-old daughter and six-year-old son listen to his music?

"Yeah, but not so much. I don't let them listen to all of it. I more make sure they deal with their school work."

Evidently it's important for Mavado to try and steer his children in the right path. With that in mind, one wonders what his mother makes of her son's career path.

"My mum goes to church- but she knows I do my music and she doesn't mind. She knows I'm not hurting anybody."

Still, Mavado is all too aware that with fame, comes haters. This is what drove him to pen the album track, Don't Cry. A dedication to his mother, the song sees him singing, "Mama even if dem kill me, don't cry."

He explains: "There are bad-mind people out there- people who don't like to see others achieve. But I've never feared for my life. My life is in Jah's hands, so when it's my time, it's my time."

Well, according to him, he's not in any war with anybody. Quite something really, considering he's part of Bounty Killer's Alliance crew- and Killer's career has seen him involved in feuds with many artists, including Merciless, Babycham and Beenie Man.

father figure

"Bounty Killer has people that he doesn't have a good relationship with, but I don't have a problem with them- and it's not a problem. For example, Bounty Killer and Babycham aren't really friends. But me and Babycham are very good friends. Bounty Killer has never told me who I can and can't be friends with. But he knows I'm a loyal person. Killer is like my father. I've been around him for like 12 years. But likewise, me and Babycham have been friends for a long time too. Something like that isn't a problem. But if someone disrespects Killer, I'll see that as my problem as well, because of my loyalty to him."

Insisting that he "didn't get involved" with Killer's long-running feud with Beenie Man, Mavado becomes a comedian as he sums up his disdain for warfare amongst artists.

"I could never really be in a beef with anyone. I'm a Rasta - I don't eat beef."

One876Entertainment.com understands that Jamaican dancehall performers Mavado and Bounty Killer were not allowed to perform at the Second City Banqueting Suite in Sherlock Street, Hockley earlier this week as police officers, acting on what they dubbed a credible security threat stepped in at the last minute to stop the concert. The 11th hour cancellation irked dancehall fans and once again raised concerns about discrimination against their culture. The event organisers Birmingham-based Luv One Luv All Promotions have taken a financial pounding as the concert cost over Ŗ25,000 to stage, and they had been forced to implement special security arrangements including walk-through metal detectors, a retinue of 30 security guards and specially trained dogs. Reports reaching One876Entertainment.com are that over 700 tickets had already been sold for the event, but the police maintain that their actions stemmed from security concerns. In a statement, West Midlands Police said: "It was agreed that the event should not go ahead due to specific and credible information received by police, which raised concerns for public safety." A string of negative incidents has threatened to derail Mavados high-flying momentum in recent months. Last week, the deejays close associate, Chase Cross, was stabbed outside the Miami Soho Studios on March 16th before the show even began. On January 19th of this year, Mavado had been booked to perform at a show in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, but he was been banned by the local authorities, presumably because of the content of his music. The police said the decision had been made bearing in mind that St. Vincent and the Grenadines had experienced 36 murders on the island in 2007, a huge jump from 13 in 2006, and they were concerned about Mavado's lyrics, which were considered to be violent. In December 2007, the deejays show was brought to a premature end by a swarm of local cops who surrounded Temple Hall Estate in rural St. Andrew. Last year, Mavado had two dates in the UK on November 23 and 25 at the Mercia Banqueting Suite (Coventry) and the Stratford Rex (London) respectively. That show should have been is first ever performance in the UK.

Paul and Patrick Gaynor, more popularly known as the dancehall duo, Twin of Twins, were yesterday taken into custody by the Half-Way Tree police on reasonable suspicion of fraud.

The brothers are accused of taking $50,000 from an upcoming artiste, under the guise that they were able to give him the opportunity to travel to the United States of America to perform.

It is alleged, however, that they failed to deliver on their promise and subsequently refused to return the complainant's money. The act is alleged to have taken place earlier this year and was reported to the police in February.

The brothers were arrested yesterday along Half-Way Tree Road and are now in custody awaiting an interview.

The duo are known for their comedic routines featuring witty social commentary and jabs at popular figures in the entertainment and political worlds. Their latest release, Trial and Crosses, has been getting rave reviews from fans.

Todays Jamaica Gleaner newspaper carries a feature on Claude Evans, a man who would like to use dancehall music to help teach mathematics, with specific focus on multiplication and timetables. He said dancehall is so prevalent in the society, so I thought we could use dancehall music to teach one of the basic concepts (of math). Most Jamaicans have learnt their timetable and the days in each month by song. We sing our ABCs to remember the alphabet itself and to remember the order of the alphabet when we file something or use a telephone directory, and we sing or recite poems.

With this in mind, he says he hopes popular artistes in the industry will sing the timetable on riddimms that children are familiar with. So far, he said Queen Ifrica and Tony Rebel have agreed to work on the project and he left a CD for Stephen McGregor to hear. See the full feature on the Gleaners website.

We've just learned Michael Jackson has died. He was 50.

Michael suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this afternoon at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him. We're told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back.

A source tells us Jackson was dead when paramedics arrived.

Once at the hospital, the staff tried to resuscitate him but he was completely unresponsive.

We're told one of the staff members at Jackson's home called 911.

La Toya ran in the hospital sobbing after Jackson was pronounced dead.

Michael is survived by three children: Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr., Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince "Blanket" Michael Jackson II.

CARICOM: killing us softly

Published: Sunday | June 7, 2009

Claude Clarke, Contributor

Correction & Clarifiation

In the Public Affairs CARICOM: killing us softly, it was stated that Jamaicas imports from the region exceed our exports 40 fold. That should have been 25 fold. Also, the overall trade deficit is over a third, not a half of our Gross Domestic Product. It's overall imports that are three times the value of our exports.

The rhetoric in CARICOM has been alluring and beguiling. It has aroused the 'better angels of our nature' and evoked idealistic images of unity and cooperation. It has reminded us of our common heritage and joined us in hopes of achieving our common aspirations. Government after government in Jamaica have unquestioningly joined the quest for the Holy Grail of Caribbean integration. But, for Jamaica, this pursuit has, so far, been extremely costly, and frustratingly elusive.

In The Sunday Gleaner of August 10 last year, in an article titled "Jamaica's Costly Affair with CARICOM", I invited a re-examination of Jamaica's experience in CARICOM, and proposed that action be taken to correct the persistent and increasingly disadvantaged position in which Jamaica has found itself. I emphasised the fact that our government's revenue and our overall economy have suffered enormously in our trade with the region. The situation has worsened since then, and our trade deficit with CARICOM now stands at US$1.6 billion, and exceeds our total exports to the region 40-fold.

In the early 1960s, my young mind was greatly perplexed by the news that the then government had banned imports from Japan on the grounds that that country imported nothing from us. At the time, I could not help believing the decision was at best imprudent; a case of cutting off our nose to spite our face. After all, Japan had become an industrial superpower and was perhaps the world's best source of competitively priced, high-quality industrial goods needed for our own development and the satisfaction of our consumers' needs.

essential strategies of trade policy

But what my youthful naīvete did not grasp at the time was that, notwithstanding the obvious downside of the action, reciprocity and balanced trade were, and still are, essential strategies of trade policy. After all, the ultimate purpose of trade policy is the promotion and development of a country's productive capacity. Regrettably, in more recent times, Jamaica's trade policies have seen a diametric departure from these fundamental and incontrovertible principles; and the consequences have been disastrous.

Our present overall trade deficit is almost half of our gross domestic product and represents over three times the value of our exports. We have a negative trade balance with just about every country with which we trade. Within CARICOM - our membership, which was expected to provide a protected trade environment in which we could compete and grow our exports - imports have dwarfed exports by staggering proportions.

With 50 per cent of the population of CARICOM, Jamaica ought to have had a natural advantage and should have been able to dominate trade within the group. Instead, we have become the dumping ground of every country in the region. Just about every member state enjoys a trade surplus with Jamaica.

Recent difficulties encountered by some Jamaican companies in entering certain CARICOM markets have rightfully attracted outrage and prompted strong responses from our Government and the private sector. But while our Government's actions will no doubt result in the resolution of the present impasse, Jamaica's problems with CARICOM are much deeper and more entrenched than can be solved with a piecemeal approach. The permanent solution Jamaica needs has to go to the heart of the problem which affects our competitiveness in the region.

There is no doubt that the anti-production economic policies of past governments, which left Jamaica the most uncompetitive economy in the region, have been major contributors to our present hopeless trading position. However, equally damaging to Jamaica's competitiveness in the region has been the extraordinary imbalance in the substantial government subsidies given to producers in certain countries, which are not available to Jamaica's producers.

CARICOM is a free-trade market within which all producers should be on an equal footing where government assistance is concerned. It is, therefore, quite amazing that Jamaican governments have sat by for so many years and allowed the Trinidadian government, in particular, to use subsidies and other devices to put its producers on a superior competitive footing to ours. It is clear that natural gas and oil used in Trinidad for energy production is priced at less than the world-market prices, which non-oil-producing CARICOM countries, like Jamaica, have to pay. As a result, Trinidad's producers pay only three US cents per kWh for electricity while Jamaican producers have been stuck with electricity bills at rates as high as 25 cents per kWh (JPS inefficiency not withstanding).

Such subsidies give Trinidad's producers an insurmountable advantage and are incompatible with the fundamental principles of fair trade within a common market. It is surprising that Trinidad, in its obvious quest for CARICOM domination, has not recognised that its own enlightened self-interest would be better served by being more judicious in its use of energy as a weapon of trade in the region. One cannot but wonder, however, whether Trinidad was not encouraged in its actions by the apparent complicity of our own Government which had, at the same time, been sending the Jamaican economy into uncompetitiveness with misguided macro-economic policies.

Trinidad's producers now completely dominate Jamaica's market, while Jamaican producers have minimal presence in theirs. This one-way trade cannot be sustained and should no longer be tolerated by the Jamaican Government. Apart from anything else, it is depriving the Jamaican Treasury of desperately needed revenue; perhaps as much as J$20 billion of Customs duties foregone last year. How can it be rational for our Government to ask us to sacrifice revenues we desperately need for our schools, our hospitals and our security forces so as to allow subsidised Trinidadian goods to drive Jamaican goods produced in Jamaican farms and factories by Jamaican workers, out of the Jamaican market?

How many Jamaican manufacturers have been driven into the ground by Trinidadian products benefiting from three cents per kWh electricity and duty-free entry into the Jamaican market? How many workers and farmers who now stare hopelessly into the black hole of unemployment are aware of the fact that their distress is substantially the result of unfair trade practised by some of our CARICOM trading partners?

There is a good reason The Bahamas does not participate in the trade aspect of CARICOM: it cannot justify surrendering the revenue needed to provide social services to its people if it cannot gain commensurately from exports of goods to the region. What is more, the logic of protective-tariff barriers suggests that more foreign exchange is spent for CARICOM imports than would be needed to pay for similar goods imported from extra-regional sources. This is even truer in Jamaica's case, as the additional cost of imports from CARICOM could run into tens of millions of US dollars and is likely paid for with debt, adding to our burgeoning debt stock and exacerbating our debilitating debt-servicing burden.

expanding the domestic and export market

The position from which every country's trade policy should start is the objective of expanding the domestic- and export-market opportunities for its productive assets: its workers, factories and farms. No trade policy, not even CARICOM, should be accepted if it cannot be demonstrated that it will result in the achievement of this objective.

Layout1_1_P2H2FPattiesDAM.jpg
Trinidad and Tobago was accused recently of using non-tariff barriers to block the importation of patties from Jamaica. There have also been difficulties getting Red Stripe beer into the Belizean marketing.

Because the outrageous trade imbalance with CARICOM so obviously undermines and destroys the economic and social well-being of the Jamaican people, there would have to be some powerful countervailing benefit to justify it. On the other hand, it would be in the interest of any country that has a significant trade surplus with Jamaica to create opportunities for reciprocity to ensure the continuation of the benefit it enjoys.

Trinidad, which is by far the greatest beneficiary of CARICOM trade, was provided a real opportunity to reciprocate when Jamaica requested LNG supplies at its domestic price. Trinidad initially agreed, but after a long period of broken promises and unfulfilled expectations, declined the request and Jamaica's hopes for low-cost energy were dashed.

Unfortunately, Jamaica contributed as much as Trinidad to the failed outcome by employing a most ill-advised negotiating strategy. We sought to use Jamaican alumina as a bargaining chip, as Trinidad needed alumina for its planned aluminium smelter. But it should have been clear that Trinidad never saw Jamaica as a necessary source of alumina and never felt pressured to secure Jamaica as its source. Additionally, because our request for LNG was linked to the Jamalco alumina plant expansion, the Trinidadian government was far more concerned with anticipated opposition from its own electorate, which would not have taken kindly to their government giving subsidised natural gas to a multi-national company, Alcoa, which is the majority owner of the Jamalco plant. What is surprising is that the Jamaican Government did not recognise that it had a far better and more powerful bargaining chip: the enormous market Jamaica represents to Trinidad's producers under the protective cover of CARICOM.

Competitively priced energy is essential to Jamaica's economic future and our Government should have taken a much stronger stand to force Trinidad to honour its original commitment to supply our LNG on the same basis as it supplies it to its own producers. Given the circumstances of Trinidad-Jamaica trade, this should now be a non-negotiable condition for Trinidad's exports to continue to receive duty-free CARICOM treatment from Jamaica. Trinidad's exports to Jamaica exceeded US$1.5 billion in 2008 and were exceeded only by its exports to the United States.

For many years, nearly all our CARICOM partners have watched their trade surplus with Jamaica rise and the prosperity of their people grow. Many, like Trinidad, now boast per capita incomes several times greater than ours, with every indication that the gap will continue to widen. CARICOM has been killing Jamaica softly, while we have slept quietly. It is now time for us to wake up and defend ourselves. It is time to say enough. Jamaicans must now demand that our Government begin to protect us from the abuse our economy has suffered within CARICOM; and wake up and fight.
