JAKARTA (AFP) - An Indonesian woman has given birth to an 8.7-kilogramme (19.2-pound) baby boy, the heaviest newborn ever recorded in the country, a doctor said Wednesday.

The baby, who is still unnamed and is 62 centimetres (24.4 inches) long, was born by caesarean section Monday at a public hospital in North Sumatra province, a gynaecologist who took part in the operation told AFP.

"This heavy baby made the surgery really tough, especially the process of taking him out of his mum's w****. His legs were so big," Binsar Sitanggang said.

The boy is in a healthy condition despite having to initially be given oxygen to overcome breathing problems, the gynaecologist said.

"He's got strong appetite, every minute, it's almost non-stop feeding," he said.

"This baby boy is extraordinary, the way he's crying is not like a usual baby. It's really loud."

The boy's massive size was likely the result of his mother, Ani, 41, having diabetes, Sitanggang said.

She had to be rushed to hospital due to complications with the pregnancy, which had reached nine months. The baby, her fourth, was the only child not delivered by a traditional midwife.

When a diabetic mother's glucose level is high during pregnancy, the baby can receive too much glucose and grow too large, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Indonesia's previous heaviest baby, weighing in at 6.9 kilos, was born in 2007 on the outskirts of the capital Jakarta, according to the Indonesian Museum of Records website.

Luciano Denied U.S. Entry Over The Weekend

luciano.jpgDancehall.Mobi special update - hot on the heels of dancehall deejay Bounty Killer being denied entry into Trinidad & Tobago by that countrys immigration officials, Dancehall.Mobi has received a report indicating that cultural dancehall / reggae singer Luciano (real name - Jepther McClymont) was denied entry into the United States this past weekend as well, and that his visa was also canceled!

He had been booked to perform at Irish & Chins Reeewind show on Saturday night (October 3). It is not known if this matter with U.S. immigration authorities is specifically related to him being charged earlier this year in Jamaica with harboring a fugitive (a man who engaged the police in a shoot-out and was holed up in Lucianos for several hours before his demise at the hands of the cops).

'Horrorcore' singer suspected in Virginia killings

(CNN) -- Elizabeth McCutchen and a friend were walking to book club two weeks ago in quaint Farmville, Virginia, when they strolled by a home on First Avenue. "Something smells dead," her friend said.

They were thinking animal. A dog, a cat, something like that. They never imagined they were smelling the remains of massacred humans. It was Thursday, September 17. But another 24 hours would pass before police made the gruesome discovery.

Richard Samuel McCroskey III -- a 20-year-old rapper in the underground genre of "Horrorcore" who sang of chopping people into pieces -- has been arrested in connection with the slayings. The crime scene was so horrifying police would not even describe it, saying only that the victims died of blunt force trauma.

The victims were Mark Niederbrock, 50, the beloved pastor at Walker's Presbyterian Church; his 16-year-old daughter, Emma Niederbrock; Melanie Wells, Emma's 18-year-old friend from West Virginia; and Niederbrock's estranged wife, Debra Kelley, 53, a professor at Longwood University.

McCroskey has been charged only in the killing of Mark Niederbrock. Police and the prosecutor's office did not return repeated phone calls from CNN. But in late September, authorities said more charges are pending.

Emma was described as a fan of Horrorcore and had met McCroskey through their mutual affection for the little-known music genre. Police said she invited McCroskey to fly from his northern California home, stay with her in Virginia and then attend the Strictly for the Wicked Festival, a Horrorcore fest in Michigan featuring bands with names like Dismembered Fetus and Phrozen Body Boy.

Nobody saw what would come next.

The slayings have been the talk of Farmville, a town of 7,000 that is home to Longwood University and nearby Hampden-Sydney College. Senseless is the word you hear most.

It's not just the macabre nature of the killings that has people talking. It's the grotesque lyrics of the Horrorcore singer; it's that it happened under their noses.

McCroskey is a young man with no criminal record who took delight in the blend of horror hip-hop that celebrated macabre killings. He went by the name Syko Sam. In one YouTube video, he holds a hatchet and sings about killing people and putting their remains in black bags: "Last night I was the murderous rage. Now, I gotta get rid of the bodies before the corpses start to get to rotting."

Ex-Ala. judge accused of trading sex for leniency

MONTGOMERY, Ala. Herman Thomas had an enviable political record as a black Democrat elected and re-elected in a county overwhelmingly white and increasingly Republican. The respected circuit judge once was the Democratic Party's choice to be the first black federal judge in south Alabama.

Then his career collapsed under allegations that he brought inmates to his office and spanked them with a paddle. Later, an indictment accused him of sexually abusing male inmates in exchange for leniency. The trial on charges of sodomy, kidnapping, sex abuse, extortion, assault and ethics violations is set to start Monday.

The case has shocked his friends and former colleagues.

"I've always had the highest regard for him. The allegations were a complete surprise to me and everyone else who knew him," said Bob Edington, a prominent Mobile attorney and former Democratic state senator.

Thomas, who was known for wearing distinctive bow ties, stepped down from the bench in 2007 after the allegations of paddling surfaced and just ahead of a judicial ethics trial that could have forced him out of office. He was indicted on the more-serious charges this past spring by a Mobile County grand jury. If convicted of the most serious charges sodomy and kidnapping he faces from 20 years to life in prison.

Bounty Denied Entry Into Trinidad - Vybz Kartel Lock It Downcpcpcp

Bounty Killer did not get the chance to "Cease Fire with his arch-rival Vybz Kartel over the weekend at a concert which was held at the George V Park in Port-of-Spain as he was denied entry into the country by Immigration officers at the Piarco International Airport.

Information reaching OutAroad.com is that Bounty who was expected to perform at the Cease Fire concert arrived at Piarco Airport minutes after 8pm last Friday (October 2, 2009) onboard flight BW 415. However, as soon as Mr. Cross, Angry Miserable exits the aircraft and approached Immigration they immediately informed him that he was not granted permission to enter the Country. Bounty Killer had to wait 12 hours for the next available flight back to Jamaica.

According to newsday.co.tt, a source close to the concert promoter, Jacho Entertainment, claimed that they were given no logical explanation as to why Bounty Killer was denied entry. The source said initially they were told that Bounty Killer failed to produce a work permit and then they were told that he was given no permission to enter Trinidad. Local artiste Ken Charles, also known as KMC, slammed the authorities for denying Bounty Killer entry to the country and said that the promoter should sue the State.

Even though patrons were upset with the Immigration decision fans still turned out in their numbers to witness a brilliant performance from Vybz Kartel along with a few members of his Empire.

Tenn. mom left to wonder when she'll see 4 kids

Then her 4-day-old son was abducted by an attacker who posed as an immigration worker, then stabbed her. The newborn was found safe, but after a brief reunion state officials took the baby away from Gurrolla again, along with her other three children.

Now Gurrolla is left to wonder when she might see any of them again. A judge will review the case this week to determine when Yair Anthony Carillo and his siblings ages 3, 9, 11 can come home.

State officials say the children were taken into custody Saturday for safety reasons but have not offered details. A spokesman said a hearing must occur within three days of when the children were taken into state custody.

Tammy Renee Silas, 39, was arrested and charged with kidnapping. She waived her initial court appearance in Alabama on Saturday and is expected to be brought to Tennessee sometime this week, FBI spokesman Joel Siskovic said Sunday. She was appointed an attorney, but Siskovic didn't know their name and the jail wouldn't release any information.

Police have not released a motive, but Silas' live-in boyfriend said she told him she could not have children and wanted to adopt a child from a relative who was going to jail.

Gurrolla, 30, had returned home with the infant and her 3-year-old daughter on Tuesday when she answered a knock at the door.

A heavy-set woman with blonde hair claimed she was an immigration agent and wanted to know about false information Gurrolla had given during a visit that morning to a Women, Infants and Children, or WIC, office. WIC is a federal program that provides vouchers to women to purchase approved foods at grocery stores and pharmacies.

Gurrolla's attacker stabbed her with a knife eight times, mostly in the neck and chest. When the attacker briefly walked away from Gurrolla, she darted to a neighbor's house, pleading for help. Sometime after that, the attacker fled with the newborn.

Gurrolla was left *lo**ied from head to toe, a long scratch mark on her face. When she held a news conference Tuesday from the hospital to plead for her baby to be found, her eyes were *lo**shot and her face was swollen.

Gurrolla has told police that she heard the attacker talking on the phone in Spanish, saying, "The job is done" and that the mother "was dying."

Authorities have not said whether they think anyone else was involved.

Police found a surveillance tape from a local Walmart showing a Kia Spectra with Indiana tags that appeared to have followed Gurrolla. It turned out to be a rental from the Nashville airport, and a phone number registered with the rental led police to Silas on Friday night.

Investigators were talking with her live-in boyfriend, Martin Rodriguez, when Silas appeared holding the infant, covered in a blanket.

Speaking through an interpreter, Rodriguez told The Associated Press that Silas told him she was adopting a baby from a cousin who had to go to jail, and was going to El Paso, Texas, to get the child.

* Tests show Caster Semenya is a hermaphrodite
* Has both male and female sex organs
* Expected to be disqualified from running
* Pictures: Caster Semenya in action

WORLD athletics is in crisis with tests showing champion runner Caster Semenya is a hermaphrodite - a person with both female and male sexual characteristics.

The tests, not yet publicly released, show the 18-year-old has no w**** or ovaries.

The International Association of Athletics Federations is expected to disqualify the South African from future events and advise her to have surgery because her condition carries grave health risks, The Daily Telegraph reports.

And she could be stripped of the gold medal she won in Berlin in last month.

Semenya has three times more testosterone than a normal female.

A source closely involved with the IAAF tests said Semenya had internal testes - the male sexual organs which produce testosterone.

Testosterone is a male hormone with a primary task of building muscle bulk. It also produces body hair and a deep voice.

It is believed Semenya is unaware the tests identify her as an hermaphrodite.

Only the certainty of a savage backlash from South Africa has so far prevented the IAAF from banning Semenya and revoking her gold medal.

South Africa embraced the feisty teenager after the storm of controversy from Berlin, declaring her "Our girl".

African National Congress MP and National Assembly sports committee chairman Butana Komphela has already lodged a complaint with the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights, accusing the IAAF of racism and sexism.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source explained the political and personal sensitivities involved.

"There certainly is evidence Semenya is a hermaphrodite. But the trouble is the IAAF now have the whole ANC and the whole of South Africa on their backs. Everything is going to have to be done absolutely by the book, no question of a challenge to the findings.

"There's all sorts of scans you do. This is why it's complicated. In the past you used to do a gynaecological exam, *la*hd test, chromosome test, whatever. That's why they (the findings) were challenged, because it's not quite so simple.

"So what they do now is they do everything, and then they can say, look - not only has she got this, she's got that and the other.

"The problem for us is to avoid it being an issue now which is very personal - of the organs being a hermaphrodite, of not being a 'real' woman. It's very dramatic."

The IAAF expects to receive the full set of results this week.

When quizzed last week by magazine You, Semenya said: "I see it all as a joke, it doesn't upset me. God made me the way I am and I accept myself. I am who I am and I'm proud of myself. I don't want to talk about the tests. I'm not even thinking about them."

While the IAAF is treating the Semenya case as a health matter, the same South African politicians who denied AIDS was a problem in their country are standing behind their queen of the athletics.

"Of course Caster is a totally innocent victim in this whole affair," the source explained.

"What could she do about it? And the IAAF accepted her entry. So the two parties at fault are the IAAF and especially Athletics SA."

BUSY IN 'BABY MAMA' DRAMA - Woman claims he is her child's dad; seeks financial support

Shantal Chin (left) and Busy STARRIGHT_1_PM724BusyanAM.jpgSignal - Contributed

Deejay Busy Signal is currently involved in 'baby mother drama', as the mother of a five-and-a-half month old baby is seeking the help of the Family Court to establish paternity and to obtain child support.

When The STAR spoke to the mother of the child, Shantal Chin, yesterday, she explained that she recently visited the Family Court in downtown Kingston on Monday, where a summons was sent to the deejay, whose real name is Reanno Gordon. The two are to appear for family counselling on October 7.

THE STAR made several calls and sent text messages to Busy Signal and his manager Shane Brown but was unsuccessful in getting a response.

According to 19-year-old Chin, she and Busy were together for one year and seven months and she was one month pregnant when the two broke up. She says however, that since becoming pregnant and having the baby she has only received money from the deejay a few times as he claimed the baby was not his. A DNA paternity test was recently done and a copy of the report dated August 13, 2009 containing the results was sent to The STAR. The test allegedly suggests that the probability of Gordon being the father is 99.9999 per cent.

Chin explained, "He wanted the test done because people were talking that it wasn't his. When I was first pregnant he was helping out. I went to Panama to stay with my aunt and the baby was born. When I came back he saw the baby and he gave me money. Like a month I kept calling him back and he neva answered, I dunno if he was here. So I spoke to his manager who said that Busy said he's not gonna give me no more money that's why he's not answering because he don't think it's his baby. So I said, 'okay, can you set up something for us to do a DNA test then cause I cannot be taking care of the baby on my own'."

trying to find a job

After getting the results, Chin said that Busy still refused to take her calls which resulted in her taking the matter to court. In the meantime, Chin has moved to live in Ocho Rios where she is single-handedly taking care of her daughter while trying to find a job.

She said; "Its been really hard. My family is not there anymore because before I was living with an aunt in Beverly Hills very contented. When I got pregnant I had to leave dere and live wid friends...I was in school at the time, till I got pregnant and kicked out and couldn't go back wid his baby. Him need to step up and start helping. Is not like I want to be with him. Even if I don't have to talk to him for the rest of my life, I don't care, I just want to make sure my daughter is okay."

According to Chin, persons have been on various Internet sites calling her derogatory names and saying that the baby is not Busy's. She however, hopes to clear her name and show the world that she is not telling lies on the deejay.

GM to shut down Saturn after Penske terminates talks with GM on uncertain future assembly

  • On Wednesday September 30, 2009, 5:07 pm EDT

DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors Co. said Wednesday it would shut down its Saturn brand after an agreement with Penske Automotive Group Inc. to acquire it fell apart.

Penske, citing concerns of whether it could continue to supply vehicles after a manufacturing contract with GM ran out, ended talks with GM Wednesday to acquire the brand.

GM CEO Fritz Henderson said in statement that Saturn and its dealership network will be phased out.

"This is very disappointing news and comes after months of hard work by hundreds of dedicated employees and Saturn retailers who tried to make the new Saturn a reality," Henderson said in a written statement. "PAG's announcement explained that their decision was not based on interactions with GM or Saturn retailers."

In a statement, the *la*hmfield Hills, Michigan-based auto retailer says an agreement with another manufacturer to continue producing Saturn vehicles after GM stopped making them fell through, leading Penske to terminate talks with GM.

Penske said it negotiated terms and conditions to make Saturn cars with another manufacturer, but that company's board of directors rejected the agreement. Penske spokesman Anthony Pordon would not identify the other manufacturer.

"Without that agreement, the company has determined that the risks and uncertainties related to the availability of future products prohibit the company from moving forward with this transaction," the company said in a statement.

Police are searching for a stabbing suspect who assaulted a woman at an adult entertainment business in Athens.

Athens-Clarke police said a man stabbed the female worker at Fantasy World after she told him he had to pay a fee for an undisclosed service he asked for.

Police said the man told the woman what he wanted Wednesday night and she took him to a private room where he sat on a couch.

When the woman told him the service required a "room fee," he pulled out a pocket knife, pushed her against a wall and stabbed her in the side.

Police said the woman pushed a panic button and employees ran to help, passing the assailant along the way.

The woman was treated and released at St. Mary's hospital.

A man charged with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend repeatedly and ran her over with his car, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The accused man is Cornel Ewart, 45, self-employed of a Kingston 12 address.

The allegations are that on August 1 about 11 am, the accused was taking the complainant to work. When she arrived at her location and was attempting to leave the car, it is alleged that Ewart pulled a knife and used it to stab the complainant.

She managed to leave the car but was chased by the accused who drove behind her and allegedly used his car to hit her down, before crashing into a fence. He then reportedly alighted from the car and continued to stab the complainant.

The complainant reportedly managed to run onto a nearby compound but was chased by the accused who threw her into his vehicle and drove off. The police were alerted by witnesses and the accused man's car was seen along Tucker Avenue off Mountain View Avenue. The complainant was taken to the hospital where she underwent surgery and was admitted in serious condition. It is alleged that Ewart was jealous because the complainant had moved on with her life.

When the matter was brought before the court, a bail application made on Ewart's behalf was denied. He was remanded until October 16 when the matter will be mentioned again.

CHURCH SPLIT AFTER PASTOR FIRED

October 2, 2009
Started By Ares4 Comments

A Clarendon church has been left divided and struggling to continue after a recent decision to dismiss its pastor because of revelations about his questionable past.

Since the decision a few months ago, a source said, the church has been virtually divided into two groups; one supporting the pastor and the other supporting his dismissal.

The source said, "His supporters have stopped going to the church. They meet at the primary school where the pastor now has his service. The others still meet at the church and a new pastor from the circuit is there."

THE STAR was told that the pastor, who has been divorced twice, was previously dismissed from a church in St James in 1992, after an alleged affair with his domestic helper came to light when she became pregnant. The pastor was married at the time.

A report of that incident carried in THE STAR of June 12, 1992, said the pastor's wife had called in officials from the head of the church after the affair was revealed. The report also said the incident had caused a division in the church, with youngsters siding with the pastor and elders calling for his removal. It also said the division had become violent in one instance when a member pulled a knife at an opposing member.

Reports are that the pastor, who got divorced after the 1992 incident, was married again three years later. That marriage, however failed as well.

In what seems like a repeat of the 1992 incident, 60 to 70 per cent of the congregation is now standing behind the dismissed pastor in the latest issue. They are reported to have said that they will go wherever he goes. The source said, "They are upset and they are saying that the divorce thing is not enough grounds, but they don't know about the helper story."

The source told THE STAR that the St James church was contacted and a representative there confirmed that it was indeed the same pastor.

Following their investigation that the church's overseeing body decided to dismiss the pastor because of his past troubles but the decision has not been taken well by some of the members.

When THE STAR contacted the pastor, he admitted that he had been dismissed, but said he could not talk about the matter as investigations were still ongoing. He said, "It is an internal church matter that is not yet completed. There are implications that need to be sorted out."

Col****ian authorities seized $11.2 million in U.S. currency in Buenaventura, Col****ia, on September 9.

The U.S. agency, commonly called ICE, says the seizures were made September 9-18. It called them the largest seizure of cash ever found in shipping containers destined for Col****ia and the largest for the agency since its inception.

According to ICE:

On September 9, Col****ian customs inspectors and Col****ian national police, acting on intelligence reports, seized $11.2 million in U.S. currency hidden in two shipping containers. The containers were aboard a vessel that sailed from the Port of Manzanillo, Mexico, and was headed to Buenaventura, Col****ia. Col****ian customs inspectors said it was the most cash ever seized by police at a port in the nation.

On September 10, a second seizure of U.S. currency estimated at $11.2 million also was made at the Buenaventura port.

On September 11, a shipment of $11 million was discovered hidden inside two shipping containers at the Port of Manzanillo.

Richie Spice & Spanner Banner Return Home After Successful US Tour

spanner-banner-richie-spice.jpgReggae stars Richie Spice and Spanner Banner recently returned to the island after a highly successful four week of the US west coast. The tour, which began on September 27th in Chico California at the BMU Auditorium, saw the two Bonner brothers performing to sold out venues across California, Colorado & Seattle. They also trekked across the border to Canada for a few dates in Vancouver, Edmonton & Calgary.

A spokes person from their management company Bonner Cornerstone Music says that the tour was very successful as expected.

Both artists are currently back in the island and are working on individual recording projects. In a few weeks time they will be leaving the island again for a series of one off shows across the Caribbean.

After more than a year, Mighty Crown "The Far East Rulers" and Irish and Chin will embark on an explosive World Tour starting in October 2009 to celebrate another major career milestone, a third Nike sneaker deal. The Irish and Chin produced tour, dubbed "'The Mighty Crown Dynasty World Tour," after the soon-to-be released sneaker, will feature three of Mighty Crown's five members: Masta Simon, Sami T and Ninja. The Crown Dynasty Tour will represent the first time that Sami T and Masta Simon have toured together in over three years.

The super sound Mighty Crown has once again collaborated with Nike to release the Dynasty High sneaker. The unique studded sneaker is an elite revamp of Nike's 1981 original Dynasty High. Blazoned with the Crown logo on the tongue, the sneaker is being released in conjunction with the Anniversary of Mighty Crown's Yokohama Reggae Festival (SAI) -- Japan's largest Reggae stage show. Mighty Crown members believe that this accolade serves as the perfect time to celebrate with a highly anticipated tour. Additionally, according to fans, it's time for Mighty Crown to hit the road again with their dancehall madness!

Each of Crown's members has been pursuing successful endeavors recently, which has prevented them from touring together. Now, the Mighty Crown team is set to deliver over-the-top dancehall entertainment to their fans, who sometimes have just one opportunity a year to catch a glimpse of their favorite sound. With dates going quickly, the Crown Dynasty Tour is destined to be a hit.

Mighty Crown is the most successful non-Jamaican dancehall sound system worldwide. As a clash sound, they have defeated the best the arena has to offer. Meanwhile, as a jugglin' sound they have performed in places through out the world. At this time, Mighty Crown is armed, dangerous and ready for war. Masta Simon, one of the sounds founding members, has always respected juggling, but his passion truly lies in clashing. And why not? It's clashing that made the sound famous! The Crown Dynasty Tour will consist of both juggling and clash dates, something the sound took a break from. While Simon, Sami T and Ninja tour, members Supa Gee and Coji will continue locking down Japan.

"We took a break so that Sami T, Chin and I could take on other business ventures," says Masta Simon enthusiastically. "Now that we have gained individual strengths, it's time to bring our power together to focus on elevating Mighty Crown to another level."

The Crown Dynasty Tour will certainly send shock waves through the dancehall industry -- revitalizing the sound system tour phenomenon. Mighty Crown is eyeing 20+ dates for the tour and can't wait to get back to the arena!

Mighty Crown is ready to add this high profile tour to their growing list of accomplishments. A strong business sense has made Mighty Crown the definition of dancehall in Japan. Notably, the sound has been afforded with three sneaker deals to date, a leading Japanese record label, two clothing lines and a magazine. And finally, an annual stadium show that draws over 30,000 patrons.

Essence-Atkins-Wedding-13.jpg

Remember when we reported that Essence Atkins found love on the internet? Well the wedding photos were released to the media.

The ceremony was held on September 26, 2009.

For those that need a refresher, actress Essence Atkins met Jamie Mendez, and now they are married. They were coincidentally both on an online dating site. They both had no profile pictures and somehow messaged each other, fast forward to today...they are married.

Here is what they both had to say about each other

Quote:
I wanted to try something different. Match.com was ideal because I could kinda remain anonymous. They also have a very extensive pool, theyre one of the more reputable sites so I knew my relationship would be private.

Jaime said:

We courted each other the way I think it should be done. We did not rush anything. I didnt even know who she was initially because I didnt watch much television back then, so I wasnt influenced by her celebrity. That made her character even that much more impressive to me."

Phone tax hike...... MUS PREE

September 30, 2009
Started By Ares7 Comments

Effective tomorrow, Jamaicans will be paying more to talk on their telephones.

Finance Minister Audley Shaw last night announced an increase in the tax on telephone cards, telephone calls, and instruments from 20 per cent to 25 per cent.

The minister also announced an increase in departure tax from $1,000 to $1,800.

The earning from both tax measures is expected to yield $1.7 billion for the government, which is seeking to run a Budget deficit of 8.7 per cent, up from the $6.6 billion which Parliament approved in April.

"In light of the significant fallout occurring within various sectors such as bauxite, alumina, tourism ... there is need for additional revenue," Shaw said.

Interest charges of $16.2 billion, as well as the reduction in Government tax revenue by $12.9 billion helped to throw the Government's budget out of line.

"It is a time for unselfishness and sacrifice to triumph over selfishness and greed," he said. "In these worst of times we can square our shoulders and be determined to unearth the best of times."

Opposition spokesman on finance, Dr Omar Davies, in his contribution to the debate on the Supplementary Estimates, continued to call the Government's Budget "incredible".

He said the finance minister was going after the "little people with their cell phone" and argued that those holding Government paper should pay more.

Four determined gunmen recently sent pedestrians in New Bowens, Clarendon, scampering for cover when they chased and showered a taxi, transporting two men they earlier shot, with bullet.

Information reaching THE STAR is that the saga started just before midday Wednesday, when the injured men, 24 and 45, were shot and injured.

Reports say the men were sitting under a tree in a yard in the community when a car pulled up. Four armed men alighted and fired several shots at the men injuring them.

THE STAR was told that the injured men fled and hopped in a taxi, which sped off with them. This obviously did not go down well with their attackers who hurried into their vehicle, pushed the pedal to the metal and started chasing the taxi while firing shots Bruce Willis style.

The Hayes Police say while the taxi was damaged during the shooting, the driver managed to get the injured men to hospital. They were both admitted in stable condition.

Investigators have not yet established any motives or suspects in the attack. Residents are however, theorising that the incident may be as a result of an internal feud in the area.

One resident said just last week, men got in an argument and shots were fired at the vehicle of one of the arguing parties. The source said that she did not know what the argument was about but word on the street is that Wednesday's shooting was a reprisal.

1. Guys hate sluts even though they have sex with them!

2. "Hey, are you busy?" or "Are you doing something?" ~ two phrases guys open with to stop from stammering on the phone.

3. Guys may be flirting around all day but before they go to sleep, they always think about the girl they truly care about.

4. Before they call, guys try to plan out a little about what they're going to say so there aren't awkward pauses, but once he's on the phone he forgets it all and makes it up as he goes.

5. Guys go crazy over a girl's smile when they're attracted to them

6. Guys will do anything just to get you to notice him.

7. Guys hate it when you talk about your ex-boyfriend or ex love-interest. Unless they're going for the let-her-complain-to-you-and-then-have-her-realize-how-wonderful-and-nice-you-are method.

8. A guy who likes you wants to be the only guy you talk to.

9. Boyfriends need to be reassured often that they're still loved.

10. Don't talk about your guy friends to your boyfriend.

11. Guys get jealous easily.

12. Guys are more emotional than they'd like people to think.

13. Giving a guy a hanging message like "You know what?!..uh...never mind.." would make him jump to a conclusion that is far from what you are thinking. And he'll assume he did something wrong and he'll obsess about it trying to figure it out.

14. Guys are good flatterers when courting but they usually stammer when they talk to a girl they really like.

15. Guys hate asking parents for money to buy girls presents. So they come up with ideas like saving their lunch money for a week. But it never works because guys are always hungry so they end up asking the parents for money anyway.

16. Girls are guys' weaknesses.

17. Guys are very open about themselves.

18. It's good to test a guy first before you trust him. But don't let him wait too long.

19. Your best friend, whom your boyfriend seeks help from about his problems with you may end up being admired by your boyfriend.

20. If a guy tells you about his problems, he just needs someone to listen to him. You don't need to give advice.

21. A usual act that proves that the guy likes you is when he teases you.

22. Guys love you more than you love them if they are serious in your relationships.

23. Guys will brag about anything.

24. Guys use words like hot or cute to describe girls. We rarely use beautiful. If a guy uses that, he likes you a whole hell of a lot.

25. Guys think WAY too much. One small thing a girl does, even if she doesn't notice it can make the guy think about it for hours, trying to figure out what it meant.

26. Guys seek for advice from girls not other guys. Because most guys think alike, so if one guy's confused, then we're all confused.

27. Any guy could write out a rulebook or advice book for flirting, but no guy can write out a book about relationships.

28. Try to be as straightforward as possible.

29. A guy has to experience rejection, because if he's
too-good-never-been-busted, never been in love and hurt, he won't be mature and grown up.

30. If the guy does something stupid in front of the girl, he will think about it for the next couple days or until the next time he spends time with the girl.

31. No matter how much guys talk about asses and boobs, personality is key.

32. Guys learn from experience not from the romance books that girls read and take as their basis of experience.

33. Guys worry about the thin line between being compassionate and being whipped.

34. If a guy looks unusually calm and laid back, he's probably faking it and is spazzing inside.

35. When a guy says he is going crazy about the girl, he really is. Guys rarely say that.

36. When a guy asks you to leave him alone, he's just actually saying, "Please come and listen to me."

37. Guys don't really have final decisions.

38. If a guy starts to talk seriously, listen to him. It doesn't happen that often, so when it does, you know something's up.

39. If your best guy friend seems to avoid you or is never around when you're with your boyfriend, he's probably jealous and likes you.

40. When a guy looks at you for longer than a second, he's definitely thinking something.

41. Guys like femininity not feebleness.

42. Guys don't like girls who punch harder than they do.

43. A guy has more problems than you can see with your naked eyes.

44. Don't be a snob. Guys can be intimidated and give up easily.

45. Everything in moderation. Put on makeup, wear perfume. Just not too much.

46. Guys talk about girls more than girls talk about guys.

47. Guys hate rejection, but they hate being led on even more.

48. Guys really think that girls are strange and have unpredictable decisions and are MAD confusing but somehow are drawn even more to them.

49. A guy would give his left nut to be able to read a girl's mind for a day.

50. No guy can handle all his problems on his own. He's just too stubborn to admit it.

51. Not all guys are assholes. Just because ONE is a jackass doesn't mean he represents ALL of us.

52. We don't like girls who are too skinny.

53. We love it when girls talk about there ass.

54. Always make sure you know what kind of stuff your getting into before making out with a guy , like whether it's a one time deal or not .

55. Believe it or not shy guys are the most easiest to talk to. It may not seem right but trust me they will start opening up like books after you just ask them questions about their lives and unnoticeable tell them about yours.

56. When a guy hits your butt it means that he wants you sexually.

57. Even if they refuse it all guys are ticklish on the ribs.

58. Guys love neck rubs and if he lets you keep doing it, it means that he really likes you or his neck really hurts.

59. Guys will test the waters to see how far they can get with you. Even if he doesn't intend to it will happen. Know how far it is you want to let him go and he will respect that after you let him know a couple times.

60. When a guy sacrifices his sleep and health just to be with you, he really likes you and wants to be with you as much as possible.

"No Alliance, no 'Gaza', no 'Plaza', no 'Gully'; JOP a dat me seh," says former Alliance member Aidonia after what seemed like a hiatus from the dancehall industry.

Aidonia said he has reinvented himself and is now ready to take back his spot in the dancehall industry with JOP (Jag One Production) by his side.

"Mi hide weh and reinvent mi thing. Mi nah deal with anything fi throw off mi energy or mi meds. So any negative people I was around, we just walk wide. We not even waan breathe the same air weh dem breathe," Aidonia told THE WEEKEND STAR.

When asked if his statement was in reference to anyone in particular, he said 'no'.

However, he is no longer as close to Vybz Kartel, who he used to fondly refer to saying 'Addi Mi Daddy'. Aidonia left the Alliance shortly after Vybz Kartel in 2006.

high-powered weapons

In February 2008, Operation Kingfish questioned the two about a picture with men resembling them both posing with what appeared to be high-powered weapons. However, they were never charged.

"The last time mi talk to him (Kartel) was over the phone about a month ago. Mi only see him pon the TV and on the Internet. Da one time link link deh everyday, no deh deh again," Aidonia told THE WEEKEND STAR.

"If we see each other, no malice, no nutten. If mi hail him and him nuh waan hail me, a fi him business that. Right now a music me a deal wid. Aidonia come back fi di number one spot inna music. Di standard a music drop. Music needs melody but it still needs lyrics and flow."

Aidonia's performance at the recent Fully Loaded show at James Bond Beach in St Mary, was also a surprise, as it was organised by Sharon Burke, Bounty Killer's booking agent.

However, Aidonia said he is no longer in any form of malice with Bounty Killer, so being there was not an issue.

"Mi always seh Bounty Killer a mi grandfather, we look up to Killer to the fullest. Me and nobody nuh inna nutten. A nuh no malice thing. We see each other a Bibi (national footballer Ricardo Gardener) dance the other day and we had a reasoning," he said while noting that he has no plans to rejoin the Bounty Killer led Alliance.

"We a keep it neutral. The whole a we a brothers and sisters inna di music industry," he said.

"Me and Shane-O a lead out JOP," Aidonia said, while noting that Shane-O joined the group about four months ago.

He said the focus is now on Suhverto from the JOP camp, who recently released a single called Step Pon Bwoy. He said he wants him to be the next big thing out of the camp.

Work will also be done with other artistes from the group like Deablo, Size Ten and Show Crime.

In the meantime, Aidonia is working with producers such as Russian (Head Concussion Music), Jordan McClure (Chimney Records), DASECA, Birch, Sparks, Stephen McGregor and Equiknoxx.

He is also working on an album, which will have about 15 new tracks, seven of which are already complete. In addition, he will release another CD with some of his older tracks.

Aidonia also has upcoming shows in Europe, The Bahamas and New York.

Information reaching OutAroad.com is that famed Alliance selector Foota Hypemother's house was sprayed with bullets over the weekend. According to persons who saw the shooters, they believe that these shottas are affiliated to Mavado. However, according to reports from theConstant Spring Police Station Mavado'sRange and house was also sprayed with bullets on Monday night.

When OutAroad.com contacted Foota Hype's mother Doreen to ask her about the incident this is what she had to say. "Mi nah tell yuh nuh lie I am so upset because mi caan believe dat a di singer friend dem shoot up mi house - dem seh dem have shoot out down the road and my house is eleven houses away suh how come my house got shot up and then saying it was mistakenly shot-up," she said.

Doreen also added that "mi deh yah bruk because mi caan get fi guh town because I am in fear for my life. All now mi caan believe seh this a happen because if anyone did tell mi dat Mavado and Foota woulda tun out to be enemies I woulda seh that will never happen because dem grow up together - Foota first come buss and then him help Mavado through di gate. I live to see people having up Foota just because they can't get free dub from di singer.

Crying For Peace
"I am begging for peace because a nuh suh wi fi live Mavado must remember that it was my son who helped him to get his passport and duh nuff other little things for him but I guess that's not enough for him to give thanks to Foota Hype for....Di man dem whe singer have round him are the ones who forcing him to turn against people who were there for him in the beginning stage but Mavado nuh have no head top so anything whe dem she him absorb it fi get the pressure off his shoulder.

"My last word his if you don't have any love inna yuh then yuh nah guh be able to love others."

The Worse Thing I Did Was Bussing Mavado.

Foota Hype was also shocked as to what took place at his mother's house.

"The person whe dem pin-point as one of di shooters par wid di singer and if him nuh have nothing fi duh wid it then why yuh still have a person like that around yuhMi caan believe dat the same man whe mi bawl out mi throat fah and put money in his pocket a di same money him waan fi use and kill mi - a whe some a dem did deh when mi a carry di Gangsta around pon bicycle.

"Right now if someone ask me what's the worst thing I have ever done in my life - I would say bussing Mavado, this mek mi feel like mi nuh waan fi play no more new artiste songs.

Foota also speaks a bit as to how Mavado's career got started. "Him always talk seh aDaseca buss him suh who introduced him to Daseca - when mi carry him round Daseca them think him was mi likkle shotta. I can even remember at one point mi affi a fight people fi voice him and if a producer bring a rddim gi mi fi play mi nah play it until dem mix-off Mavado's song.

usain-bolt.jpg

special update - Usain Bolt is Jamaicas sprint super hero, a man who will soon become the youngest ever recipient of one of Jamaicas highest national honors - the Order of Jamaica - and a man who was recently named Jamaicas Ambassador-at-Large with full diplomatic status; among other accolades. The on-going Gaza (Vybz Kartel) vs. Gully (Mavado) saga is never far off the radar of most young people here in Jamaica, and in many past interviews where he has been asked the question, Usain Bolt has not been afraid to state his preference for Vybz Kartel (i.e. the Gaza). In a recent television interview, he reiterated that hes a passionate Vybz Kartel/Portmore Empire/Gaza fan, but highlighted that as long as both artistes kept the war lyrical, he had no problem.

Last night was Bolts welcome home party at his favorite place to party - the Quad Night Club in New Kingston - but he reportedly made statements on the microphone to the packed club that can only lead you to question the sensibility of his actions. According to eyewitness reports, the party was in full swing and an extended segment of Mavado songs was being played when Bolt appeared in the DJs booth and announced on the microphone that this is the end of the Gully tunes and that a gaza mi seh, and anybody nuh like dat jump inna gully.

Knowing his famous personality, there is no doubt that his words were said in jest, but given recent violent incidents involving Gaza and Gully fans, and given how notoriously easy it is to incite violence here in Jamaica, his words seem a bit over the top - because ultimately this Gaza vs. Gully war is no joke. From his own perspective as well, he should recognize that by drawing lines and making statements (unsolicited), he may be playing with fire, as his almost demi-God status here in Jamaica may mean nothing to some die hard Gully fan who decides to take him on physically or verbally because of his words.

Usain Bolt is Jamaicas hero, and although hes still just a fun-loving 23 year old, he needs to display a higher level of maturity on this matter. In fact, as was done a few years ago by Deputy Police Commissioner of police Mark Shields, Dancehall.Mobi would now like to see Usain Bolt be the one to broker a meeting and peace deal between the Vybz Kartel and Mavado camps - a far more desirable scenario than him adding fuel to the fire.

Bounty Killer was his usual brash self when he spoke with THE STAR recently. Never reluctant to speak his mind, the 'Warlord' addressed upcoming artiste Flippa Mafia's song Unfinished House, which comes over as an indirect insult to Bounty Killer. But there were other pressing issues on his mind, such as the "dancers them (in scarf and tight pants) weh need fi change up dem sum'n" and the Mavado/Vybz Kartel rivalry.

A dancehall veteran of two decades, Bounty Killer, born Rodney Price, has been credited for launching the career of several deejays ("All the yutes dem need a Killer a back dem and dem gone"), chief among them, Mavado and Vybz Kartel, who are now bitter lyrical rivals vying for the top spot in dancehall. One, Mavado, is a 'gangster crooner' with impeccable melody, and the other, a revered lyricist with the gall to challenge anyone, including his former mentor, Bounty. When asked about the two, not surprisingly, Bounty credited Mavado, who is still a member of his Alliance crew, as the better artiste.

In a controversial move in late 2006, Kartel stepped out of his 'father's house' and into his own, leaving the Alliance to form Portmore Empire. Since then, Kartel has been at odds with Alliance members.

According to Bounty, Kartel would have reached a lot further in his career had he remained loyal to the Alliance that launched his career and might even be as far internationally as Mavado currently is.

wickedest genius lyrically

"Kartel a di wickedest genius, lyrically, but him still can't throw Mavado. Kartel buss 10 years now and Mavado bigger than yuh and richer than yuh and him have at least three points ahead of Kartel. Some of these niggaz are stupid and just want to run di clubs and the streets," he said with his usual strong intonations.

The usually miserable Bounty wasn't hard-pressed to pour on the praises for his musical sons, Mavado and Serani, who have been stirring the Billboard charts and have gained recognition from international media. Bounty believes the Kartel-led Portmore Empire, which was formed in late 2007, will not reach far and his Alliance is still the strongest dancehall conglomerate around. Bounty drew parallels between the Empire and Alliance, going as far as renaming the Portmore Empire the Ungrateful Alliance.

a general

He elaborated, "Look pon MTV Jams, yu si nobody from Gaaa-zer? Nuh Mavado yuh si? Mavado deh pon Hot 97 in a New York an' a tour the whole a di US. Yuh never did know seh a suh Mavado bad till him start clash with Kartel, don't? When Kartel leave Alliance him a do him thing and Mavado come replace him as a general. Who in a Portmore Empire can step up and be a leader? Jah Vinci? Blak Ryno? Dem a follower.

"Serani and Mavado are mashing up big time on BET and MTV. Alliance is going on strong and is the strongest ting out deh now," he said.

Bounty Killer posited that recent altercations between him and Kartel and the Monster Hemp Higher, are as a result of a lack of respect for the elders.

"Monster Hemp Higher use to par wid we and Scare Dem. A me sing bout dem an' mek dem bus as a crew," said Bounty. "These yutes don't have any moral or loyalty or response for where dem a come from - dats the problem with society."

Having gone through his own lyrical battles with arch-rival Beenie Man Alliance general Bounty Killer said he would once again love to see both Vybz Kartel and Mavado publicly clear the air about their difference. The deejay, born Rodney Price, admitted to be concerned over the violent reports that have been surfacing in the media which, he believes, stems from supporters of the 'Gaza'/'Gully' feud who are determined to prove their loyalties. While not solely blaming Vybz Kartel and Mavado who are the respective leaders of the cliques, Bounty Killer is convinced that a public discussion involving the two artistes would be a welcome sign of change. lyrical battle Previously Mavado and Vybz Kartel participated in a similar forum with an aim to assure fans that the feud was only a lyrical one. However, after their lyrical battle at Sting 2008 in Jamworld, St Catherine, the feud has become more intense. Recently, both Bounty Killer and Vybz Kartel have been at each other's throat lyrically. The public is now anticipating a potential clash at this year's Sting. It has also momentarily sidelined the Gully/Gaza saga, but Bounty Killer believes there are too many youths involved in the affair, which sometimes poses a damaging effect. "Nuff yutes under di influence of Gully and Gaza now. Mi a di man whe a tell people say a Gully but if yuh say Gaza we nuh have nuh problem wid yuh. Say your Gully or say your Gaza but a mi run di plaza," he said. "Me need unnuh (media) fi tek Mavado and Kartel and discuss dat. It nuh affi be two a dem di same time, but dem fi do some public forum and mek di people dem si say a nuh nuten serious, 'cause a nuh PNP or JLP again," Bounty Killer said. negative effects He also added that the public is to blame partially for the negative effects and warned, "We now (as artistes) have to mek dem di people know say, when yuh a use dem sumten here, don't mek it seem like a we inside a do it. Cause dem (the public) a use it and mek it look like a Gully and Gaza a tell dem fi do it." He continued, "Gully and Gaza a nuh di problem, is just two words. If people did love dem one another it wouldn't divide dem. Gully or Gaza thing a gwan in Africa but there is no war. Di same ting a gwan a Trinidad and New York but nobody nah war. Suh it's di people who have a lot of difference in dem and them glad fi get a Gully or a Gaza to use it. Like it's Gully or Gaza a do it, but from longtime a suh we stay?" he said, in reference to dancehall clashes. Bounty Killer closed by saying he and fellow Alliance members don't despise Gaza supporters, and was adamant that it's Vybz Kartel and his Portmore Empire who were the ones with a grudge. "A nuff Gaza fans me have. Yuh know how much people deh a Gaza and still follow Bounty, but a Gaza dem say. But it nuh mean dat dem nuh rate Killer. Suh true dem say Gaza me fi hate dem? No. But Kartel nah endorse dat. Kartel a endorse him difference. Right now a Waterford, any man whe say Alliance or Gully dem inna trouble. Di Gaza people dem a dat dem do, yuh never go anywhere and hear say Gully or Alliance man dem wah fight, yuh always hear a Gaza man dem," he said.

Like are you [censored] kidding me! kmbct

Budget deficit

The earning from both tax measures is expected to yield $1.7 billion for the government, which is seeking to run a Budget deficit of 8.7 per cent, up from the $6.6 billion which Parliament approved in April.

"In light of the significant fallout occurring within various sectors such as bauxite, alumina, tourism ... there is need for additional revenue," Shaw said.

Interest charges of $16.2 billion, as well as the reduction in Government tax revenue by $12.9 billion helped to throw the Government's budget out of line.

Selfishness and greed

"It is a time for unselfishness and sacrifice to triumph over selfishness and greed," he said. "In these worst of times we can square our shoulders and be determined to unearth the best of times." >oh stfu.. kmt lc

Opposition spokesman on finance, Dr Omar Davies, in his contribution to the debate on the Supplementary Estimates, continued to call the Government's Budget "incredible".

He said the finance minister was going after the "little people with their cell phone" and argued that those holding Government paper should pay more.

As you know by now, Kanye is not really liked by the people of Hollywood at the moment.

After the nonsense he pulled at the award shows, a lot of celebs are pretty much rallying to have this guy either banned, boycotted, and some want to hurt him.

Here are some of the comments by some celebs...

Quote:
50cent: I wish he would come take one of my awards so I can black his eye and in front of everybody.

Kate Perry: F***k you Kanye. Its like you stepped on a kitten.

Donald Trump: Boycott Kanye so this kind of thing doesn't happen again.

Pink: Kanye West is the biggest piece of s***t on earth, It would have been a different night for him if it was me on that stage.

Trey Songz: You deserved it girl, dont let no man tell you otherwise

Joe Jackson: Dont know what he was doing, he jumped up on stage and snatched that microphone out of that poor girls hand. They should blackball him out of show business for that.

Kelly Clarkson: What happened to you as a child? Youre a sad human being.

Wolf from American Gladiator:
Just thought Kanye might want to know I hang with alot of the Country Artist and I will bump into him somewhere... HARD and several times!!! He is an ass and needs taken down, maybe Criss B can be there too. School is about to open and lessons about to be taught!

PITBULL TALKS ABOUT KAYNE

Ninja-Princess-man-daughter.jpgWith all the events that has unfolded for veteran DJ Desmond "NINJA MAN" Ballentine, one thing that's sure to go right, is the entry of his daughter Samantha "Ninja Princess" Liesch Ballentine in to the music business. With him loosing time away from his duties at the microphone and stage temporarily, Ninja Princes seems to be filling the spaces.

Just this week Patayer Club Records Productions, released a heavily decorated four (4) track compact disc, with Ninja Princess flexing not only her style and swagger but most importantly her vocal skills and diversity, with tracks such as: "You can't touch me", "Hot Gall", "Whining Contest" and "The Original".

In song, You Can't Touch Mi Ninja Princess highlighted that she's not the kind of girl to be missing around as she stated "Chat dem a chat dem cant touch mi".

She also stated that she has her own "money plan", and has the ability to "fly and shop at leisure" as well as her financial exploits and abilities to protect and defend herself Hence the title "Ninja", be it a princess or queen.

A ninja is a renowned assassin, therefore we will keep a watchful eye to see how deadly this young "Ninja Princess" is. However, with the musical genes of her father Ninja Man and the guidance of her management team she will definitely become a force to be reckoned with.

AGROUP of Jamaicans in Miami have launched a petition to allow deejaysBuju Banton and Beenie Man to appear on the October 31 Reggae Bash showin that Florida city.

The group has sent a letter to Miamimayor, Manuel Diaz, and Carlos Alvarez, mayor of Miami/Dade County, asking for their support. The show is scheduled for the James L. KnightCenter.

Equality Florida, a gay rights group, told the Miami Herald that Banton has a history of abusing homosexuals. It pointed to his infamous 1992 anti-gay song, Boom Bye Bye, as evidence.

Forgotten matter

ButAndrew Minott of Global Vybz Entertainment, promoters of the show, countered by saying the song was done almost 20 years ago and thatBanton no longer performs it at concerts.

"The song wasforgotten about. Because they are making it a big issue it's come tothe forefront. Let sleeping dogs lie," Minott said.

According to the Miami Herald, the car dealership, Toyota of Hollywood, has ordered three of its salesmen to withdraw support for the concert.

Several calls by The Gleaner to Banton's manager, Tracii McGregor, were not returned.

EqualityFlorida is the latest gay organisation in the United States tochallenge Banton's American tour, which is in support of his Rasta Got Soul album.

InAugust, promoters Live Nation and AEG cancelled dates in Los Angeles,San Francisco, Philadelphia, Chicago, Las Vegas, Dallas and Houston, following robust protests by the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center.

Backlash forcing hand

Thegay backlash has forced the singjay's management to reschedule shows inother major cities such as Salt Lake City, Utah, Richmond, Virginia andColumbus, Ohio.

Banton and other dancehall acts, includingSizzla and Capleton, have been dogged by gay activists in the UnitedStates and Europe for several years. In 2007, gay rights groups draftedthe Reggae Compassionate Act, which called for dancehall acts to showmore tolerance towards homosexuals.

Banton has denied signing it, but the Miami Herald published a section of the document with the signature Mark Myrie (Banton's real name) affixed to it.

I GOT INFO FROM A ALLIANCE MEMBA DAT DI MAIN REASON WHY KARTEL LOST HIS VISA IS HE FORGE MARRIAGE DOCUMENT PAPERS SO DAT HE CAN TRAVEL AGAIN AFTER INITIALLY LOSING IT FOR OTHER CASES AGAINST HIM AND THE U.S EMBASSY AND GOVERNMENT HAS TOKE IT VERY SERIOUSLY SO HIS CASE IS VERY SERIOUS MORE THAN PEOPLE THINK.

BANGKOK For the first time, an experimental vaccine has prevented infection with the AIDS virus, a watershed event in the deadly epidemic and a surprising result. Recent failures led many scientists to think such a vaccine might never be possible.

The vaccine cut the risk of becoming infected with HIV by more than 31 percent in the world's largest AIDS vaccine trial of more than 16,000 volunteers in Thailand, researchers announced Thursday in Bangkok.

Even though the benefit is modest, "it's the first evidence that we could have a safe and effective preventive vaccine," Col. Jerome Kim said in a telephone interview. He helped lead the study for the U.S. Army, which sponsored it with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The institute's director, Dr. Anthony Fauci, warned that this is "not the end of the road," but said he was surprised and very pleased by the outcome.

"It gives me cautious optimism about the possibility of improving this result" and developing a more effective AIDS vaccine, Fauci said in a telephone interview. "This is something that we can do."

Even a marginally helpful vaccine could have a big impact. Every day, 7,500 people worldwide are newly infected with HIV; 2 million died of AIDS in 2007, the U.N. agency UNAIDS estimates.

"Today marks an historic milestone," said Mitchell Warren, executive director of the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition, an international group that has worked toward developing a vaccine.

"It will take time and resources to fully analyze and understand the data, but there is little doubt that this finding will energize and redirect the AIDS vaccine field," he said in a statement.

The Thailand Ministry of Public Health conducted the study, which used strains of HIV common in Thailand. Whether such a vaccine would work against other strains in the U.S., Africa or elsewhere in the world is unknown, scientists stressed.

"This is a scientific breakthrough," Thai Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai told a news conference in Bangkok. "For the first time ever there is evidence that HIV vaccine has preventative efficacy."

The study actually tested a two-vaccine c****o in a "prime-boost" approach, where the first one primes the immune system to attack HIV and the second one strengthens the response.

They are ALVAC, from Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccine division of French drugmaker Sanofi-Aventis; and AIDSVAX, originally developed by VaxGen Inc. and now held by Global Solutions for Infectious Diseases, a nonprofit founded by some former VaxGen employees.

ALVAC uses canarypox, a bird virus altered so it can't cause human disease, to ferry synthetic versions of three HIV genes into the body. AIDSVAX contains a genetically engineered version of a protein on HIV's surface. The vaccines are not made from whole virus dead or alive and cannot cause HIV.

Neither vaccine in the study prevented HIV infection when tested individually in earlier trials, and dozens of scientists had called the new one futile when it began in 2003.

"I really didn't have high hopes at all that we would see a positive result," Fauci confessed.

The results proved the skeptics wrong.

"The c****ination is stronger than each of the individual members," said the Army's Kim, a physician who manages the Army's HIV vaccine program.

The study tested the c****o in HIV-negative Thai men and women ages 18 to 30 at average risk of becoming infected. Half received four "priming" doses of ALVAC and two "boost" doses of AIDSVAX over six months. The others received dummy shots. No one knew who got what until the study ended.

All were given condoms, counseling and treatment for any sexually transmitted infections, and were tested every six months for HIV. Any who became infected were given free treatment with antiviral medicines.

Participants were followed for three years after vaccination ended.

Results: New infections occurred in 51 of the 8,197 given vaccine and in 74 of the 8,198 who received dummy shots. That worked out to a 31 percent lower risk of infection for the vaccine group.

The vaccine had no effect on levels of HIV in the *la*hd of those who did become infected. That had been another goal of the study seeing whether the vaccine could limit damage to the immune system and help keep infected people from developing full-blown AIDS.

That result is "one of the most important and intriguing findings of this trial," Fauci said. It suggests that the signs scientists have been using to gauge whether a vaccine was actually giving protection may not be valid.

"It is conceivable that we haven't even identified yet" what really shows immunity, which is both "important and humbling" after decades of vaccine research, Fauci said.

Details of the $105 million study will be given at a vaccine conference in Paris in October.

This is the third big vaccine trial since 1983, when HIV was identified as the cause of AIDS. In 2007, Merck & Co. stopped a study of its experimental vaccine after seeing it did not prevent HIV infection. Later analysis suggested the vaccine might even raise the risk of infection in certain men. The vaccine itself did not cause infection.

In 2003, AIDSVAX flunked two large trials the first late-stage tests of any AIDS vaccine at the time.

It is unclear whether vaccine makers will seek to license the two-vaccine c****o in Thailand. Before the trial began, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said other studies would be needed before the vaccine could be considered for U.S. licensing.

Also unclear is whether Thai volunteers who received dummy shots will now be offered the vaccine. Researchers had said they would do so if the vaccine showed clear benefit defined as reducing the risk of infection by at least 50 percent.

Those issues, plus how to proceed with future studies, will be discussed among the governments, study sponsors and companies involved in the trial, Kim said. Scientists want to know how long will protection last, whether booster shots will be needed, and whether the vaccine helps prevent infection in gay men and injection drug users, since it was tested mostly in heterosexuals in the Thai trial.

The study was done in Thailand because U.S. Army scientists did pivotal research in that country when the AIDS epidemic emerged there, isolating virus strains and providing genetic information on them to vaccine makers. The Thai government also strongly supported the idea of doing the study.

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey, in the midst of paparazzi taking photos, was recently asked by one paparazzo about her thoughts about the stuff that rapper Eminem was saying about her and her hubby, entertainment executive, Nick Cannon.

Looking fantastic there Mariah, started off the TMZ paparazzo, as an attempt to possibly butter up the music R&B singer and wife of Nick Cannon in preparation for his next question.

Mariah, sorry to ask but what do you think about of all this stuff that Eminem is saying, he asks Mariah Carey in the midst of Mariah Careys bodyguards who were insisting No, No, theres nothing were not talking.

Who?!, Carey responds initially to the pap, possibly taunting at Eminem, as if to not even recognize the name Eminem.

Eminem, the the pap says again.

I dont eat candy, Mariah Carey responded before getting into her car.

The stuff that the pap was referring to that Eminem is saying is referring to the rappers diss in a song entitled Bagpipes from Baghdad were Eminem calls Mariah a f-ckin whore and a c-nt. The attack didnt go over to well with Mariah Careys new hubby Nick Cannon, as previously reported on HipHopRX.com, and was later claimed by Eminem as a simple misinterpretation of his song.

Eminem now claims that he only meant to wish them the best, thats all.
