A man is now the centre of attention in Comma Pen, St Elizabeth after he is said to have launched an all-out attack on a dog which bit him.
THE STAR heard that the man, Jasper*, tried on at least three occasions to get a hold on the canine in order to inflict a bite of his own. He reportedly did so on Tuesday.
"Mi neva see nuttin like dis yet ... . Di man swear blind seh him ago bite back di dog and him neva stop til him hold him," Patricia Clarke, 42, of the community said.
Corporal Kevon Hibbert said news of the incident reached the St Elizabeth police following an altercation with the dog's owner and the man who allegedly bit the animal.
"The owner of the dog was really upset and actually attacked the other guy with a machete. The other man went for his machete also but when he got back we were on the scene so we held on to both of them and that's how we heard of it," Corporal Hibbert explained.
open gate
About a week ago Jasper was walking through the community when a dog rushed through an open gate and bit him.
After seeking medical attention, Jasper walked about telling everyone about the incident swearing he would stop at nothing until he bites back the dog.
On Saturday, residents witnessed Jasper poking at the dog with a piece of stick. That plan did not work as the dog ran everytime he tried to grab him. Jasper tried again on Sunday by going into the dog's yard and trying to chase him down - that plan also failed.
On Tuesday, residents said Jasper pushed tin foods through a fence into the dog's yard. It was then that he finally got hold of and bit the animal to everyone's disbelief.
"If mi neva see fi myself me wouldn't believe ... Di man grab di dog inna him throat and bite him pon him belly part," Marky, another resident said.
"Yu waa si him a wrestle wid di dog it come in like a movie," another resident added.
Meanwhile, the police say the dog's owner has offered to refund Jasper for the medical expenses he incurred when he was bitten.
The Jamaican police has over the years, been criticized for being corrupt and ineffective.
They have been accused of murdering innocent civilians and jailing the wrong people who end up spending years in prison primarily on the back of weak and prejudiced investigations; and generally, many in this nation believe the Jamaican police could not catch a criminal even if he was living in front of a police station.
Arrested a goat
Well, I say thank God for small mercies because it could have been worse. Compared to the police in some parts of the world, our cops look like geniuses. Take the police in Kiwara State in Nigeria, for example, who this week arrested a goat on a charge of attempting to steal a Mazda 323.
I kid you not.
The goat, they believe, is actually a man who transformed; morphed into a goat in a bid to escape the long arm of the law. Google it if you doubt my words.
Reports coming out of Kiwara state said some vigilantes saw some men attempting to steal a car. As the vigilantes pursued the suspects, one of the men fled while the other turned into a goat. At least, that is what the police are reporting.
In custody
The police spokesman's statement is what cracks me up. "We cannot confirm the story, but we have the goat in custody," he said. "We cannot base our information on something mystical. It is something that has to be proved scientifically, that a human being turned into a goat."
If I was reporting on that story I would have asked him then and there just how he and the police planned to prove that a human can turn into a goat. It's mind-numbing that in this day and age these things can actually happen.
Straight face
Can you imagine Renato Adams or better yet, Rear Admiral Hardly Lewin trying to sell this story to local media? Colonel MacMillan would have just fallen dead right then and there.
And even if they were successful, can you imagine Dorraine Samuels or Kerlyn Brown reading this on the nightly news with a straight face? I don't even think any reporter here would file such a story, even if it was true. Well... some would.
The thing is, I don't think it would even have come to that. If such a thing was even possible - a man turning into a goat - can you imagine how many police stations would have curried goat on their menu every day?
Idiocy
What is scarier still is if our local police could get away with this kind of idiocy, can you imagine how many goats would currently be incarcerated inside the Tower Street and Spanish Town facilities?
Come to think of it, with the state of crime right now if the Government could get away with it, they wouldn't mind too much if the police were arresting goats believed to be criminals with extraordinary powers. It would certainly be cheaper to feed them. Gra** grows everywhere.
Ridiculous
And while I am on the subject of idiocy, what is all the hullabaloo over Prime Minister Golding getting a new car? It's just *lo**y ridiculous. The man is the prime minister for God's sake. Is he supposed to drive around in a broke-down 12-year-old Volvo, just because some people think with their butts and believe that he shouldn't be acquiring a new vehicle or choose instead to drive around in a Toyota Corolla?
Who I blame for this is the previous administration. They were the ones who got more than 30 brand new BMWs at the end of the ICC World Cup of Cricket two years ago and for some inexplicable reason did not retain one for the Prime Minister. That is how short-sighted they were, or blinded by greed; or both.
The arrest of Jamaican reggae star Buju Banton on Thursday in Florida on conspiracy to possess and intent to distribute cocaine followed an investigation that sounds like an episode of the 1980s cop drama "Miami Vice."
According to the Tampa Tribune, the arrest of one of the most controversial modern reggae acts to come from the island nation in the post-Bob Marley era began with a meeting last Tuesday at a Sarasota, Florida, restaurant called La Tropicana de Havana. It was there that Banton (born Mark Anthony Myrie) allegedly pulled up in a silver Land Rover with the license plate "JAH ONE" with another man named Ian Thomas and an unidentified woman and allegedly attempted to arrange to buy several kilos of cocaine.
Police recorded the meeting, and according to the criminal complaint, a confidential source told the singer to go to a warehouse under surveillance, where they met with an undercover Sarasota police officer who showed him and the woman a car that had 20 kilos of cocaine stashed in secret compartments. Banton and Thomas allegedly sampled the drugs and negotiated the price for a few hours, then left, only to return the next day after Thomas called the source and expressed interest in buying 15 kilos of the drug.
Another meeting took place Wednesday at an Applebee's restaurant in Sarasota, where Thomas allegedly told the source his group wanted to purchase 5 kilos and possibly more at a later time. He also reportedly said another member of his crew was in the parking lot with about $125,000 in cash.
By late afternoon, Thomas and the source left the restaurant and met with a man named James Mack, who was in the driver's seat of the car and who returned to the Applebee's to continue negotiating the deal, according to the criminal complaint.
On Thursday morning, Thomas and Mack allegedly drove back to the warehouse, where an undercover Sarasota officer saw Mack pull large amounts of cash from a hidden panel in the rear driver's side of the Honda. After inspecting the cash, the undercover officer gave a bag with 7 kilos of cocaine to Thomas and Mack. Officers then gave the signal to arrest the two, while Banton was simultaneously apprehended in Miami.
All three were charged with conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute and are being held with no bond. Grammy nominee Banton whose recent U.S. tour was plagued by calls for protest from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, who decry the homophobic lyrics to his 1992 song "Boom Bye Bye" is expected to appear in a Miami courtroom later this week. He faces up to 20 years in prison on the charges. A spokesperson for the singer could not be reached for comment at press time.
Capt. Jerry Stewart of the Houston County Sheriff's Department said the students are being held at the Crisp Youth Detention Center. A hearing has been scheduled for Monday in Houston County Juvenile Court for the students.
The Warner Robins Police Department released its report Friday regarding the Dec. 4 incident.
The police report said the incident involved a male and female student. The report said it occurred while the substitute teacher was at the front of the room and her view was blocked.
Stenake Johansson, chairman of the Residential Association on @#$laro island, told the Associated Press on Saturday that Elin Nordegren became the owner on Dec. 1.
"Elin Nordegren has bought it, but I don't know how much Tiger has signed on to those papers," said Johansson, adding that his organization is still awaiting all the paperwork.
Johansson could not confirm the house's reported price of $2.2 million and said he didn't know whether Nordegren and Woods planned to move in.
Irateshow promoters in St Lucia and Guyana are planning to sue dancehallartiste Vybz Kartel for a series of no-shows over the weekend.
Kartel and members of his Portmore Empire were reportedly booked for a concertin Guyana on Saturday night, after which they should have moved on to St Lucia to perform on the last evening of a three-day event calledLove Fest.
Reports are, however, that while some members of the Empire turned up,Kartel missed his flight to Guyana, not once, but twice, after whichthe promoter was asked to send a charter. According to one report, thiswas done, but the plane sat on the tarmac on Saturday and the deejayrefused to leave Jamaica. Conscious Minds Promotions in Guyanareportedly suffered tremendous losses when they were forced to cancelthe show. The Sunday Stabroek in Guyana noted that "a press releaseadvised that persons who purchased tickets for the show will receivefull refunds beginning Tuesday at all ticketing locations".
The promoters are quoted as saying, "We again express our deep regretat the disappointment that our supporters must feel and pledge that we will make good with other promotions."
Meanwhile, the St Lucia promoter Andrew Hayles, in an interview last evening withthe Observer, said that he had spent over US$20,000.00 on plane fare just to ensure that Kartel would be present for his show, Love Fest, which has built up a solid reputation during its eight years.
"Naturally, the Guyana promoter and myself have been communicating, since I was supposed to bring Kartel in from there. So those tickets went down the drain. Then I made direct contact with Kartel and he toldme to send two first-class tickets for him and Jahvinci to travel from Jamaica. At 11:00 pm on Saturday we got the travel agent to open up her business place so we could purchase the tickets. Then plans changed and we were asked to get a charter and this was done. Then the next thing we know we hear on Sunday that Kartel had posted a statement on YouTubesaying that he was not attending Love Fest in St Lucia and it was notthe promoter's fault," Hayle said, still sounding bemused at all thathad transpired.
A quick look at YouTube shows a 33-second clip with Vybz Kartel whoidentifies himself and then goes on to say "we a mek the people demknow from now that we won't be attending Love Fest in St Lucia ... butit's no fault of the promoters or the promotion which is Hot FM ...it's just circumstances beyond our control."

The police yesterday nabbed 'Bobby', the machete-wielding character who was caught on camera attacking a taxi man just metres away from the Papine Police Station in St Andrew on Tuesday.
Charged with felonious wounding is Barrington Robert Aldridge, 29, otherwise called 'Bobby' of Nannyville Gardens and Tavern Avenue in Kingston.
THE STAR learnt Bobby was held, minus the locks, yesterday afternoon in the Highlight View area of St Andrew also known as Mud Town. He was reportedly held about 3 p.m. during an operation.
"Yes man, him cut off his locks, but he was held thanks to police intelligence and a planned operation," an officer at the Papine Police Station said when contacted yesterday.
He is scheduled to appear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court next Tuesday.
Meanwhile, his victim remains hospitalised in stable condition.
Shortly after the clip was shown on national television, rumours began to circulate as to what could have sparked such a barbaric act.
The police say they could not confirm the rumours, but say Aldridge is to be further interviewed after which an update would be provided.
The Constabulary Communication Network had earlier reported that about 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22, Aldridge and the victim had an altercation, during which a machete was used to chop the man several times.
The disappointing aspect of surgically renewing the hymenal ring is that any medical procedure to give the appearance of virginity is largely deception. What our heart craves is to be made a virgin not in the eyes of someone we have fooled, but in the eyes of the One who sees everything and knows everything. Who wants to struggle through life tortured by a continual compulsion to hide a guilty secret? The latest surgical procedures are rightly called plastic surgery in that they are a sham compared to what we really crave. We want to know in every fiber of our being that when all is revealed, we truly are virgins. As skilled as they are, doctors cannot remove our guilt and regain our innocence. Psychiatry might alter ones perception of the past but it cannot change reality and undo the fact of sexual misbehavior. We dare not overlook the dangers of hymen reconstruction. We will examine this later. Total restoration of innocence, however, would take an act of God. This, our greatest need, is the primary focus of this webpage.

Vybz Kartel (left) and Mavado at Sting in 2008. - File photos
With Vybz Kartel and Mavado clearly topping the favourite and most popular dancehall artiste categories in research among 300 15-24-year-olds in four parishes, there is now statistical confirmation of the inevitable - and what the dancehall has probably realised for some time.
There is a changing of the dancehall front guard, following the Beenie Man and Bounty Killer dominance since the early 1990s. The findings are part of research, funded by the University of the West Indies' (UWI) Office of the Principal through the Special Initiatives Research Fund, on violence and dancehall culture. It was conducted between June and August this year.
Kartel and Mavado
C****ined, Kartel and Mavado took 61 per cent of the total responses to the question, "Who is your favourite dancehall artiste?" And together they took a whopping 81 per cent of the responses to "Who do you think is the most popular dancehall artiste now?"
Beenie Man scored 23.7 per cent for Favourite Dancehall Artiste, with Bounty Killer and Aidonia tying at 2.1 per cent. And the 'King of the Dancehall' took 14.2 per cent for his third place in 'Most Popular Dancehall Artiste Now', Busy Signal receiving 1.2 per cent and Bounty Killer 0.8 per cent.
Dr Donna Hope-Marquis, lecturer in reggae studies at the UWI, who led the study, told The Gleaner that "Bounty Killer had decided to retreat". On the other hand, Beenie Man has not decided to give up his dominance.
She speaks to the different dancehall descendants of Bounty Killer, with his influence on both Vybz Kartel and Mavado. In addition, there are people like Elephant Man and RDX. "When I look at it, I say Bounty Killer has borne a lot of fruit," she said. On the other hand, in the music business, Beenie Man does not seem to have had any.
While Hope-Marquis said "people seem to forget that Mavado and Vybz Kartel are brothers musically", she also pointed out that Vybz Kartel was actually from a generation slightly before Mavado. "The rise of Mavado has expanded Kartel's career considerably," she said, as he had found a rival who can match him.
In her analysis, Hope Marquis writes: "Further, the rise of Vybz Kartel and Mavado to the top of the dancehall fraternity at this time begs some analysis, particularly when Beenie Man, who is obviously from another era, continues to re-invent himself and attract and hold popular youth attention, purportedly unlike his arch-rival, Bounty Killer."
She also addresses any arguments about Bounty Killer's continued relevance, saying "there will be many invalid arguments that Bounty Killer 'done'. I wish to state categorically that this is not so. What is clear is that Bounty Killer has made way, consciously or unconsciously, for the continued movement and renewal of one dominant aspect of dancehall culture, through the rise of his musical protégés and cultural sons, the siblings and arch-rivals, Vybz Kartel and Mavado.
Gully or Gaza
"As he presaged at Sting 2008, 'Mi two son dem ah come out come clash later' and proclaimed at Reggae Sumfest 2009, 'Gully or Gaza, ah me build di plaza', Bounty Killer's energy lives through his 'sons', Vybz Kartel and Mavado. This is the ultimate energy that drives dancehall culture, the aggressive machismo brokered on c****ative clashes, lyrical violence and musical rebellion," she writes.
And she concludes "fans and followers of Jamaican dancehall culture will also understand that the two other artistes whose names are highlighted in the Most Favourite and Most Popular artiste category at this time, Busy Signal and Aidonia, also claim musical mentorship through Bounty Killer's camp."

THE STAR yesterday learnt that Lewis is to purchase the coffin from the popular Brite Lite Funeral Services. "Mi jus go pick out him (Mr. G) coffin ... . Yu nuh hear mi tell uno seh people ago dead a Sting, Goofy ago dead ... a $200,000 mi spend pon it," the confident sounding Lewis said who at every chance during the interview interjected that he would be victorious at the show billed for Jamworld in Portmore, St Catherine, come Boxing Day. Tommy Thompson, chief executive officer of the funeral home confirmed that Lewis had visited his offices, picked out the coffin and made a deposit. "Yes man, LA Lewis come pay down on a coffin fi Goofy inna di 200 (thousand) bracket," Thompson said. "Him seh him ago kill Goofy," he added while laughing. The two did not disclose the plans for the design. They, how-ever, claimed it would be a surprise left for Sting. licensed firearm Many may not take Lewis seriously but, according to him, people are going to see a different person at Sting. "A nuh LA Lewis people ago see, a di seven-star general ... . LA Lewis a di businessman but di seven-star general a di warrior," he explained. It was reported last month that Mr G was in trouble with the law after allegedly using his licensed firearm to assault LA Lewis. The incident reportedly occurred at a business place on Old Hope Road in the Kingston 6 area. Reports are that Mr G had an altercation with his fellow deejay over money owed to him. It is alleged that when Lewis, real name Horace Lewis, failed to pay over the money, Mr G grabbed Lewis' phone, a Motorola Sidekick said to value US$500. Further reports are that Lewis tried to retrieve the phone from Mr G but was slapped on the hand with a firearm. The incident was reported to the Matilda's Corner Police Station. Now, LA Lewis is willing to settle the matter outside of court, dropping the case against Mr G if he clashes with him at Sting. Having approached Sting promoter Isaiah Laing about the clash, Laing met with Mr G and Lewis and the clash was signed off on by both parties. | |
THE WEEKEND STAR learnt that police from Westmoreland were summoned to a basic school in Top Lincoln in the parish, after the youngster showed the 9mm pistol to a teacher.
The boy reportedly found the weapon in bushes close to his home.
"This boy found the weapon and took it to school, luckily it was empty," Corporal Matthew Douglas said when contacted by THE WEEKEND STAR.
Reports are that on Monday the boy went to school with the weapon concealed in his schoolbag.
behaving perturbed
During lunch, he was talking with a teacher when he said he wanted to shoot his friend. A few days earlier he saw the boy sharing lunch with a girl people joked was his 'girlfriend'.
The teacher told the child not to say that. However, he reportedly continued behaving perturbed and spoke more about his girlfriend being stolen.
The conversation got even more serious when the child admitted to having the gun. Reports are that the teacher initially thought it was a joke but was shocked when the child went for his bag and told her to look inside.
When the WEEKEND STAR spoke to the teacher, after much prompting, she said she was frightened when she realised the boy was not joking.
"Frightened? You have no idea, frightened is an understatement...I had to call a male teacher to come hold the bag until the police came," she said.
In describing the 5-year-old boy she said: "he is a very bright student who is very quiet and attentive in class."
Since the incident, concern has surfaced that the boy and his family may be at risk. "In light of this recovery, we don't know who the weapon belongs to so we have to be keeping in close contact with the family in case they may be blamed or threatened by any criminal elements," a detective from the Area One police said.
The school's head teacher declined to comment and efforts to speak with the boy's mother were unsuccessful.
No second court appearance yet for Buju Banton |

Reggae star Buju Banton remains in a South Florida lock up Monday afternoon following his arrest last Thursday. RJR News reported Sunday morning that the entertainer, whose given name is Mark Myrie, was arrested in Florida by members of the Drug Enforcement Administration. He was held with two other persons, named as Ian Thomas and James Jackson Mack. The US District Attorney is charging Buju Banton with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine. Defence attorney David Rowe has disclosed that the federal complaint alleges that three persons including Buju Banton tried to sell cocaine to undercover federal agents. "The two individuals Mr. Thomas and Mr. Myrie actually cut the cocaine package open inspected it and Mr. Myrie actually tasted it to determine if it was genuine cocaine or not and then left and made further arrangements for the purchase of cocaine and a great deal of this are audio and video taped," Mr. Rowe said. Defence Attorney Professor David Rowe speaking with RJR's Hotline host Richard Crawford. And Public Information Officer with the Drug Enforcement Administration Dave Melenkevitz told RJR News this morning the artiste was in court on Friday where his case was mentioned. He will return to court when he is transferred to Tampa. "I don't have that information. I don't believe that he will be in court today. I believe he went Friday and he won't get another court appearance until he gets up to Tampa," said Mr. Melenkevitz He said he does not know when the transfer will take place as that is the duty of the US Marshal. The artiste, whose album "Rasta Got Soul" was nominated in the Reggae Category for this year's Grammy awards, has been locked in a bitter feud with gay rights activists who claim his lyrics incite violence against them. |
MIAMI Jamaican reggae star Buju Banton is facing a drug charge in Florida.
Banton, whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie, has been in U.S. federal custody in Miami since Thursday.
Drug Enforcement Administration spokesman David Melenkevitz said Sunday that Banton was arrested on a charge of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine. The charge stems from a DEA case in Tampa.
An e-mail to Banton's independent record label was not immediately returned Sunday.
Banton's ninth album, "Rasta Got Soul," is nominated for a Grammy. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation launched an online petition protesting the nomination, saying some of Banton's earlier lyrics have advocated violence against gay people.

Buju Banton, the Jamaican reggae star whose anti-gay lyrics have drawn international criticism, is in a federal lockup in Miami, facing drug conspiracy charges.
Drug Enforcement Administration agents say Banton, real name Mark Anthony Myrie, has been in custody since Thursday and will soon be transferred to Tampa, where the U.S. Attorney is charging him with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilos of cocaine.
Banton has homes both in Jamaica and Tamarac.
While legions of dancehall reggae enthusiasts view Banton as one of the most prolific voices of Jamaica's poor masses, critics say he's a gay basher whose lyrics incite violence by calling for attacking and torturing homosexuals. His songBoom Bye Bye, a dance-hall hit released in the 1990s, advocates shooting gays in the head and setting them on fire.
As late as September, Banton's local management told The Miami Herald that the criticism of the star was unwarranted because he had stopped singing the song years ago. The song remains a hit among reggae DJs.
Still, such lyrics have made Banton one of the more controversial reggae artists, with angry gay activists this fall forcing the cancellation of a string of concerts by the artists during a U.S. tour that included a Halloween night concert in Miami.
Recently the firestorm ratched up after the Grammys announced that Baton's album Rasta Got Soul, released earlier this year, was up for an award.
Gay Men of African Descent and the National Black Justice Coalition joined with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation in a petition drive protesting the nomination.

The wrestling community is reeling today after news that WWE superstar Edward Umaga Fatu has died.
The former wrestler, known to fans as Umaga, died Friday after suffering a heart attack, CNN reports. The 36-year-old's wife reportedly found him unconscious with *lo** coming out of his nose. He was rushed to a hospital in Houston, Tx, but was pronounced dead at around 6:00 pm EST.
In 2007, The News reported that Fatu was one of many superstars who bought prescription drugs from an online pharmacy, which violated the same WWE "Talent Wellness" program. The wrestler had purchased a growth hormone called somatropin in the months following a WWE rule was instituted stating no drugs from online sources.
Fatu was the cousin of Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, and a member of the Anoa'I wrestling family. He was nicknamed the Samoan Bulldozer for his powerful technique and won the WWE Intercontinental title two times. But despite his stellar performances, Umaga was fired by the WWE this summer for once again violating the Wellness Program by not entering rehab.
But what was an attempt at engaging the teenage audience, turned into a very conflicting message when Coordinator of the School Discipline Implementing Division of the Ministry of Education, Gabriel Cumbermark described Vybz Kartel as a "good singer, with good lyrics if only students could separate the two".
Cumbermark added his comment after a candid presentation by one student from Tunapuna Government Secondary who spoke about the danger youths face by basing their actions on song lyrics. Students from seven schools from the St George East District were invited to make five-minute presentations on violence and indiscipline.
As chairperson of the first half Cumbermark had made several attempts to lighten the atmosphere for students who sacrificed their class parties in favour of an afternoon with the Education Minister Esther Le Gendre, teachers, other education officials and surrounded by media cameras.
Le Gendre, also the PNM representative for the Tunapuna constituency, said the schools invited from the Tunapuna, St Augustine and St Joseph areas were representative all of the schools in the East-West Corridor. Four of the seven schools, including the El Dorado East and West Secondary, came into the spotlight after recent reports of violence involving students.
According to Le Gendre these "bad eggs" were in the minority.
"I am more than concerned, but I have faith in the schools that better days are coming," Le Gendre said. She added that while healthy rivalry in sport and culture is a good thing, it becomes dangerous when taken to unhealthy excesses.
Steve Williams, Manager of Student Support Services referred to statistics from three independent reports on school violence saying, "Schools are safer than communities and homes where they (students) come from." He said most common among incidents of indiscipline were unsupervised class time and empty classrooms.
Rondel Kellen, new student council president at El Dorado East Secondary agreed saying the double standard of authority figures within the school have contributed to indiscipline among students.
"Members of authority need to step up to the plate and be the standard bearers of productivity," he said. His passionate call for the reinstatement of suspended principal Michael Thomas and for teaching staff to recognise their role "beyond chalk and blackboard" brought rousing applause from his schoolmates.
Rondel also appealed to the Minister to return El Dorado East to original school hours as it negatively affects students.
Ana Maria Mora, a counselling psychologist at Families in Action, who facilitated a closed-door interactive session with the students later in the afternoon, said she hoped the Ministry would look at the source of the unhappiness and disconnectedness experienced by young people.
"There's a lot to be done here. This is a start. This whole thing about the music that they listen to, the Gaza and the Gully, the separation, the wars that they have internalised and taken unto themselves without understanding where this is from. They have to learn that Beenie Man, and Vybz Kartel, Mavado and Bounty Killa, they're making money."
Out of the meeting, the ministry expects to develop an Action Plan to be adopted by schools across the country.
It's is something that generates conversation no matter what. What I am talking about is hair. if you don't believe me, go changing your hairstyle and see what happens. Believe me you won't be invisible. You will generate comments.
Despite Independence, the somewhat liberation of women and societal enlightenment, we still have a somewhat narrow view of hair.
While the situation isn't particular to Jamaica mind you, we can apply it to the Jamaican context. There was a time when braids, afro, kinky hair, natural hair or whatever you want to call it were not allowed in schools or in the workplace. In actuality though how far have we really come though?
When former Prime Minister Michael Manley announced he was engaged after making a trip to Hampton High, many persons had their curiosity at an all time high. Who was the lucky girl? Turns out it was a black woman with an Afro. Many utterances came forth especially along the lines of 'you need to relax your hair and stop embarrasing us'. Well that was more than 20+ years ago, but have we really relaxed our attitudes towards natural hair? Have we? When Joan Andrea Hutchinson came out full fledge with 'Dat Bumpy Head Gyal' she received alot of acrimonious comments from many in society. I wonder what would have happened if Michele Obama sported an afro.
Today it is evident that no matter the progression in society we still have deep seated issues with our identity. When Cindy Breakspeare won Miss Jamaica her hair was straightened by accident (her hair got wet and she had to blowdry it - that made it seem straight). Today even when most persons watch Ms Jamaica or Ms Universe if you were to do a bet to find out who would most likely win, the person most likely to be chosen as the winner would be the fairest and straightest hair person.
There are many institutions in Jamaica that do allow for hair that is a bit too natural. Only recently did BNS change it worker code. They had transferred a dreadlocked female (she came in with processed hair originally) from the New Kingston Branch to the Hagley Park Branch. Perhaps after the lawsuit brought against them, it forced them to rethink and then change the worker code. There was also a time when you would not see a natural hair person on the soon to no longer be National airline, but things have obviously been relaxed a bit.
Many women endure scalp burning, pin jooking, sticky glue, poisonous chemicals, skin searing and scalding just to fit in, either because they are going to be stereotyped, blocked from promotion, finding a mate (because whether we accept it or not Jamaican men like straight haired women, despite their love for the 'black woman' or because it makes life just a little easier. You can see it reflected even in the dancehall, thousands are spent lining the pockets of the same white man that we cuss, because even if a lot of women can't eat them must have the hair sown cause they can't grow it, so they weave it to achieve it. I have even heard that the creme or false hair can get them a ring, house, car and a man. What happened to working for your own?
I suppose even 30 years down the road we will still be having this discussion

Cops have now charged the 20-year-old man accused of punching a three-month-old infant to death, with murder.
The Old Harbour Police officially charged Orville Brown of Gutter's, St Catherine, on Monday.
He had been in custody for almost two weeks and is to appear in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court in St Catherine early next week.
According to reports, on September 9 the accused, the toddler and his mother were at home when an argument developed.
Investigators said, the woman confessed that Brown was not the biological father of the infant. The baby was then punched in the face several times and had to be rushed to hospital where he later died.Recently, 'daggerin' videoshave appeared on United States cable stations and on the Internet, and they sometimes portray Jamaica in a negative light.
A few months ago a two-minute clip of 'Dutty Fridaze', held in California, appeared on the American cable station Tru TV. The main dancer, Skerrit, was jumping off high speaker boxes and other objects, landing on females. Other times he used his shoes and the table to hit them. The analysts all bashed the video, referring to it as dangerous.
There was also another video, 'Girl dies while dancing', that was quite popular on websites like Youtube and Facebook, as well as on mediatakeout.com. In this video, the dancers also behaved like acrobats.
But these are only a couple of the 'daggerin' videos that are uploaded to the Internet daily. The comments left for these videos are never very flattering, sometimes refering to Jamaicans as barbaric.
However, Montego Bay-based dancer Dyema says she does not believe Jamaica is being viewed negatively because that is what her audiences abroad want to see.
enjoy themselves
"Overseas people like that. When we go overseas a weh dem watch pon DVD dem waan see or dem nah go enjoy themselves," she told THE STAR, noting that people who make comments on Youtube can say anything, but their views are not necessarily a good representation of how people feel.
"Maybe to how the video look, it look like we a get hurt but a something weh wi practice. A mostly me dem do dem style deh wid (in reference to dancers Garth Sample and Marvin)."
Garth Sample said the videos might look bad but this is what he does for a living and this is also the case with other dancers like Dyema, Marvin, Back It Up and Iyla.
"Dem fi know seh a we job we a do. Is jus' our way fi mek money but some a it a stunt. Nuff a wah gwaan nuh real. We rehearse it so we know how fi land and how fi hold the woman dem so dem don't get hurt. Sometimes the move will go wrong, like when Marvin knock out the girl," Garth Sample said.
positive and negative aspects
Another dancer, Mystic, said she has seen many of these videos and, like dancehall artistes, she said there will always be positive and negative aspects in dancing.
"Di one dem weh a dash out dem thing pon de sand make women in the dancehall look bad. Men get away with things that women cannot get away with," Mystic told THE STAR while noting that she does not want to seem as if she is bashing anyone.
"Maybe dancers like me, Dance Xpressions and Mad Michelle can pretty up the product little bit."
Creator of the dance move '90s Rock', Shelly Belly, said he feels some level of remorse about how negatively Jamaica is represented. But, "a our work we a do and we can't do no better".
However, Shelly Belly placed some of the blame on the selectors at dancehall events where he has had to display his dancing skills.
"Yuh know seh a di selector dem boost di dancer dem fi mek that happen. A di vibes weh di selector have the dancers under," Shelly Belly told THE STAR.
"More time me deh a some place a gwaan easy and a selector seh Shelly Belly 'go fi har' and yuh caan flop yourself. Yuh ago go hard," he explained.
