CURRENTLY in his third year at Utech, 21-year-old Ramon Pairman is driven by his passion for music. Although studying for a degree in Computing, Ramon plans to take the world by storm with his dancehall/hip-hop fusions of music. With the stage name Kray-Z, his energetic and charismatic personality, help to make his original lyrics and beats not only unique but also catchy.
TEENage took some time to sit with the young artiste to find out more about him and his music.
TEENage: How long have you been singing/dj-ing?
Kray-Z: Since I was about 13, in third form, that's when I started rapping. When I was 15, I started to switch over to dancehall, and now it's just my own style.
TEENage: What can you bring to the music scene that'll make you different from everybody else?
Kray-Z: My music is, dare I say, refreshing, is not no war tune, just a mainstream sound. Plus I don't just do dancehall or rap, my music is a fusion of dancehall, hip-hop and R&B.
TEENage: What/who inspired you to start singing/deejaying?
Kray-Z: Nuff people, friends from high school who used to deejay and I decided to try it by putting my own spin on it by adding a little dancehall. Most of my music influence comes from the hip-hop genre, but there's always a bit of dancehall cause I born and grow with dancehall.
TEENage: What was the inspiration for your stage name?
Kray-Z: (laughs) I used to do lots of crazy stuff in high school. They used to call me Kid Crazy', then it went to 'Crazy Kid', but since I'm not a kid anymore I just dropped the 'Kid. Generally though, anybody who knows me knows that I kinda just sick in my head (laughs).
TEENage: Other than the music, what do you enjoy doing?
Kray-Z: I'm a party freak, so if it's not the music is a party (laughs). There's also Vybes Squad Entertainment, where I do party planning and promotions, and, of course, there's school. I wouldn't say I enjoy it to that extent (laughs), but I do it cause it needs to get done.
TEENage: Do you plan to pursue music as a career or will it just be your hobby?
Kray-Z: Definitely can't be just a hobby; I like music too much for it to just be my hobby. But I'll have my degree as my back-up, just in case.
TEENage: How can readers contact you/preview your work?
Kray-Z: Well, every young artiste has a MySpace® (laughs), so it's myspace.com/krazythefuture. There's also the fan page on Facebook® and, of course, I'll be in the streets.
TEENage: What's next for Kray-Z?
Kray-Z: Well, I just dropped a 14 track mix tape named Hustle for Mine. It's all original tracks on original beats, and produced by G3 Musik and currently the biggest single on it is Right Now. Thing is, I want the CD to not be just a CD, but a movement, a Hustle For Mine movement. so it's all about promoting and getting the people to know me and my music. Then, of course, more producing and recording with G3 Musik. Have a few performances to do and a couple party ads to deal with too.
TEENage: As a new artiste, who would you like to work with from the local or international market?
Kray-Z: May seem strange, but I would love to work with other young artists like Protoje. There other artistes though like Wasp, Jah Vinchi, Nas and Trey Songz.
TEENage: Where do you see yourself in five years?
Kray-Z: Honestly, by then I hope to be international. Because of my style of music I see a foreign market being bigger than a local market. But five years is a while away, anything can happen.
TEENage: What advice do you have for TEENage readers that have a talent?
Kray-Z: Whatever your talent is, as long as you like what you do and you can get enjoyment from it, then go for it. Listen to the advice and comments and all that from people because it might help you, but remember to do your thing and do it for you.
TEENage: Any shout-outs or news for TEENage readers?
Kray-Z: Well, first I have to big up Stevie G from G3 Musik, he produces for me. Also have to big up Razzy my engineer, Ruption Di Boss, who sorted out my video, Ras-I and, of course, Vybz Squad Entertainment.

The United Nations AIDS programme has said that Nigeria records at least 1,000 new HIV infections every day.
A United States-based Nigerian news agency, Empowered Newswire, in a report on Thursday, said that UNAIDS declared that three million people were living with the condition in Nigeria.
According to the news agency, UNAIDS said, There is a growing demand for access to treatment and prevention services in Nigeria, which can only be met by strengthening the current partnership between global, national and local partners.
Commenting on the figures, the Director-General of the National Agency for AIDS Control, Prof. John Idoko, said that there was no cause for alarm.
New infections in the country are between 370,000 and 380,000 annually. If you divide the figures by 350 days, it will be within that range, he said.
The Minister of Health Minister, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, commended UNAIDS for mobilising the participation of non-governmental organisations, faith-based entities and the private sector to support the national AIDS response.
This has helped us gain momentum in rolling out access to services. We still have challenges. We are aware that resources are limited, but we must meet the expectations of the people we have mobilised,he said.
Meanwhile, ahead of the 2010 World Cup, South Africa on Thursday announced that the supply of condoms would be doubled between June and July.
According to Daily News, the countrys figure of HIV/AIDS stood at 5.7 million, more than any other country in the world.
Medical authorities in South Africa said they want to make sure there was plenty around in time for the games, which will be held in June and July.
Theres going to be a large number of people who will be descending onto the country, said Victor Ramathesele, general medical officer for South Africas 2010 organising committee.
Theres going to be a spirit of festivity and there could be a more than usual demand for measures such as condoms. So there are measures in place to ensure that the condom supply is going to be ramped up during this tournament, he added.
After years when the South African government failed to provide lifesaving HIV/AIDS drugs, the nation now has the worlds biggest anti-retroviral programme.
(CNN) -- A massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake rocked Chile early Saturday, killing at least 78 people and triggering tsunami warnings for the entire Pacific basin.
Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said she expected the death toll to rise.
Numerous aftershocks -- including one of magnitude 6.9 -- were felt within hours of the initial quake, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake's epicenter was located off the coast in Maule, about 200 miles southwest of the capital of Santiago. It struck at 3:34 a.m. (1:34 a.m. ET), when most people were sleeping.
"This is a major event. This happened near some very populated areas," said Randy Baldwin, a geophysicist with USGS. "With an 8.8 you expect damage to the population in the area."
The earth's rumbling was felt by millions in Chile and in parts of Argentina as well. Some buildings in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, were evacuated.
iReport.com: Did you feel it? Share information, images with CNN
Bachelet declared areas of catastrophe, similar to a state of emergency that will allow her to rush in aid. She said the town of Chillan -- which was destroyed by a killer quake in 1939 -- was one of the worst affected.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning, the highest level of a tsunami alert, for the entire Pacific region, including Hawaii and places as far away as Russia and Japan.
California and Alaska are under a tsunami advisory.
"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours," the National Weather Service said in a statement.
USGS geophysicist Victor Sardina said several tsunami waves had come ashore along the Chilean coast; the largest was recorded at 9 feet near the quake's epicenter.
"I urge people in coastal zones to move to higher ground," Bachelet said at a morning news conference.
The earliest estimated arrival for a wave that could affect Hawaii was 12:46 a.m. local time (6:46 p.m. ET). But evacuations of coastal areas were to begin at 6 a.m. (12 p.m. ET).
Saturday's quake comes just a few weeks after an earthquake devastated parts of Haiti. That quake was magnitude 7.0. The Chilean quake, at magnitude 8.8, was a thousand times stronger -- an earthquake displaces 64 times more energy for each additional point on the magnitude scale.
Check out the world's biggest earthquakes since 1900
The full extent of the damage was not yet known, although there were reports of collapsed buildings and hundreds of people in the streets. The ceiling of a parking lot in the fashionable Las Condes neighborhood of Santiago came crashing down, crushing at least 50 cars.
The capital lost electricity and basic services including water and telephones. Bachelet said regional hospitals had suffered damage; some were evacuated. The Santiago airport was shut down and a major bridge connecting northern and southern Chile was rendered inoperable.
Santiago resident Leo Perioto jumped out of bed in his apartment at the top of a six-story building.
"The whole building was shaking," he said. "The windows were wobbling a lot. We could feel the walls moving from side to side."
Glass shattered at the Santiago Marriott Hotel, but there appeared to be no structural damage, said Alessandro Perez.
Anita Herrera at the Hotel Kennedy in Santiago said electricity was out and guests were nervous.
"Our hotel is built for this," she said. "In Chile this happens many times."
Coastal Chile has a history of deadly earthquakes, according to the USGS. Since 1973, there have been 13 quakes of magnitude 7.0 or higher.
Saturday's epicenter was just a few miles north of the largest earthquake recorded in the world: a magnitude 9.5 quake in May 1960 that killed 1,655 and unleashed a tsunami that crossed the Pacific.

Deejay Black-er is defending his friend, Macka Diamond, after Unicorn had disparaging things to say about the money goddess earlier this week.
As Macka Diamond and Unicorn plan to settle their disagreement at Follow Di Arrow tomorrow at James Bond Beach, Black-er has spoken out about comments made by Unicorn about Macka Diamond.
In Wednesday's STAR Unicorn called Macka 'ungrateful' saying: "So much people in the business try to help her and she turn roun' and backstab dem: Black-er, KipRich, some odda yute who used to write fi her ñ n Lady aw... o sh can com ah Follow Di Arrow com dad lik sparrow."
owr lackr, who collaboratd with Macka for th 2006 hit song Bun Him, told THE WEEKEND STAR that he and Macka are fine. He said: "Why him a try mash up me and Macka friendship? Him a damage it like she do me anything. Me and Macka were never bad. Macka is a good girl, she's been good to me. As far as I know Macka and KipRich never had any problems either."
wrong way
According to Black-er, Unicorn is an artiste/writer that he rates and believes the deejay went about the situation wrong. Macka Diamond and Unicorn last year collaborated on the popular song Think 'Bout Mi. According to Unicorn, he was getting far less money for the song than he should have got from Macka.
Black-er said: "Him shoulda wait till the song buss, when it pass Portmore toll and possibly go ova the seas, but him mek the hype get inna him head. To me the song coulda been a big song but Unicorn did need to give it time to manifest."
Now Unicorn and Macka are set to face off at Follow Di Arrow, but Black-er believes that may not be the right decision for Unicorn. He said: "firs' ting, if a me like Unicorn no man nuh suppose to clash wid a woman, nutten like that has been done and mi nuh tink di Jamaican people a guh like dat. Him fi tek advise and low dat, mek people know you and build your fan base."
In the meantime, Black-er says he has been busy in studio and fans can expect new material from him by next month. By May, Black-er says, fans can expect a new collaboration with Macka titled Sticky Situation.TRAVESTY OF JUSTICE!!!! R&B SINGER ANITA BAKER FACES JAIL TIME . . . Back in 2003, eyebrows were raised when Ce'Cile mentioned receiving oral sex from her partner in the song Do It To Me Baby. Now however, songs about men wanting the act to be done to them seem to be becoming quite the norm.
In the past month, at least three songs on Russian's 'Go Go Club' rhythm have mentioned the act, even if it is one-sided.
In his song on the rhythm, A Nuh Whore, Demarco claims that "nutten nuh wrong gal ..." while hinting at the act. But he is not alone, as also on the same rhythm, Konshens and Darrio also subtly make mention of the act in their song Do Di Ting.
The song states: "Tongue ring inna yuh mouth and yuh caan tell mi a just fashion dat."
While singing about the act, however, both artistes blatantly state that they will not return the favour.
previous songs
Another artiste, Vybz Kartel, also mentions it in his song Go Go Club, while encouraging a woman to: "Draw fi di whipped cream and di crushed ice/yuh know weh fi do fi mek mi feel nice."
But this is not the first, as Kartel has also mentioned the act in previous songs. Aidonia also mentioned the act in Lolly, which was done some years ago.
When THE STAR spoke to Konshens, he explained his reason for recording his song. He clarified his recording of the song by saying that he was not encouraging women to perform the act. Instead, he said he was only highlighting what is happening in society.
"From day one, my songs have been constructed in the form of conversations inspired by what I see happening in society and my experiences as well," he said. "Tings wah people a talk bout pon ends and corner, so I like to think of myself as a voice of the people."
lot more expressive
The artiste further said: "There is no doubt in my mind that society has changed big time, people are a lot more expressive and empowered, so yuh find seh nobody naah hide nutten again. So I think the song is more 'expression' than promotion."
As for more women coming forward, like Ce'Cile and singing about wanting the act to be done to them and being accepted for such, Konshens said he is unsure.
"Women in dancehall have always been expressive and suggestive and I don't think it's a question of acceptance across the board. People ago like it and people ago hate it," he said.
As a Rastafarian, I-Octane says the act is not something that he endorses but he cannot stop the free will of others.
"Mi a Rasta, certain things mi nuh engage inna. But society is changing and dem young generation yah tek on to dem thing deh. Every man have dem own mind and entitled to dem own choice," I-Octane told THE STAR.The incident has resulted in a Bahamian man being charged with human smuggling while four others were charged with illegal re-entry into the United States.
Reports are that a police helicopter spotted the 28-foot Intrepid boat in the water off Black Point Marina on Tuesday night and followed it. As authorities tried to stop the boat, those onboard jumped into the water and tried to swim. The body of a 28-year-old Jamacian man was found in the water about 30 feet from shore.
Agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ICE took the men into custody.
ICE special agents also seized about 60 pounds of marijuana they found on the boat inside a duffle bag.
A criminal complaint charged Davon Rolle, 19, with alien smuggling.
Charged with illegal re-entry: David Coore, 27, of Jamaica; Delroy Coombs, 45, of Jamaica; Mathura Bridgelal, 50, of Trinidad; and Tyrel Levarity, 23, of the Bahamas.
A sixth suspect, a 24-year-old man from the Bahamas, was charged with violating immigration law and is being held by ICE. A seventh man was released by authorities.

Dancehall artiste Flippa Mafia yesterday dismissed rumours that he was arrested by the police and has been unable to leave the island.
Rumours have been flying around that the artiste was arrested and several of his shows have been cancelled as a result. However, he said this is not the case.
"No sah, nutten no go so," he told THE WEEKEND STAR in a brief conversation yesterday. "Mi hear the rumours but nutten like that, mi nuh get no lock up." There were also claims that Flippa Mafia, who spends most of his time in Philadelphia, has been unable to leave the island because of visa restrictions but he also dismissed this.
"Dat a something weh mi nuh really waan chat bout but mi nuh travel pon visa, mi have temporary residence," he said, noting that the issue is a personal matter and he is in the process of getting his green card.
"Inna 2005 dem seh Flippa stuck a Jamaica and that is when mi really decide seh mi ago tek up music serious and mi do Real Badman. Dem a gwaan like mi a nuh Jamaican."
Flippa said he has been in the country for the past two months and does not owe anyone an explanation for the length of time he has been staying here.
"Mi born a Jamaica. Mi live a Jamaica. Mi have mi house a Jamaica. Mi have kids a Jamaica. Mi mother live a Jamaica. Mi free fi stay as long as mi want," he told THE WEEKEND STAR.
Meanwhile, he said Porsche truck, which crashed in late December, is "out and bad again". He will also be performing at Follow The Arrow in James Bond Beach, St Mary, on Saturday.
Flippa Mafia is known for songs like Unfinished Business, Dem Ya and Repeat.A 21-year-old man was fined of $10,000 or six months in prison for touching a teenage girl in an inappropriate manner.
Corporate Area resident, Hernado Plummer, answered to assault occasioning bodily harm in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
He pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge.
Allegations are that on February 1, the accused man touched the teen in an inappropriate area as she headed to a nearby shop.
Plummer told the court he and the complainant were talking when she asked him why was he so close to her face? Plummer said he 'flashed her off' and, his hands touch her on her private part, however, he thought that he had touched her stomach and she slapped him in the face.
The complainant said, however, that Plummer has always been bothering her. She said he approached her and asked when she was going to give him the thing. She said his friends told him to touch her and he did.
She said after Plummer touched her, she slapped him in the face. He then hit her all across the body, a report was made and he was arrested and charged.

Life in the coming months may become a lot more crazier for a Corporate Area 'madman' after the police constable he reportedly attacked and beat with an iron pipe earlier this month, died at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) last Friday.
Information reaching THE STAR is that the special constable, Norman Nunes, 29, who was attached to Protective Services, succumbed to his injuries at 7:30 p.m. His attacker, however, whose identity is yet to be released, remains in hospital under police guard.
Reports on the tragic incident are that sometime after 2 p.m., Nunes was in his motor vehicle in traffic along Maxfield Avenue, close to the Half-Way Tree Police Station when his attacker, a man said to be of unsound mind, came up and hit his car.
The constable reportedly got out of the vehicle to accost the man who pulled an iron pipe from behind his back and attacked the policeman. Nunes was hit repeatedly in the head, causing grave injuries.
gave chase
Information continued that the attacker fled the scene, making his way on to the nearby Cargill Avenue, while police officers in the area who had witnessed the incident gave chase before later shooting and injuring the man.
Both the injured policeman and the attacker were rushed to the KPH.
Speaking with THE STAR yesterday, newly appointed Head of the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) Inspector Steve Brown revealed that it was 'more than likely' that the 'insane attacker' would face a murder charge for his fatal attack on the constable.
Brown said that the psychological assessment of the attacker would also be the first step of the way going forward and officially ascertaining the true state of the man's headspace. After this is done, then definitive actions will be decided on.
Nunes was the second lawman in a matter of months to have faced a gruesome attack. Last December, a policeman had to be rushed to hospital after his throat was slashed with a knife while he was on duty at Jamaica House.
Reports said the alleged attacker Andre Pratt, went to the main gate and tried to enter, requesting to speak with Prime Minister Bruce Golding. After being barred, a knife was used to cut the lawman's throat.
The injured policeman was rushed to the Andrews Memorial Hospital for treatment while his colleagues accosted the attacker. The policeman survived his injury. Pratt, 23, was subsequently charged with wounding with intent.
The record $240-million lotto jackpot that was hit 14 days ago remains uncollected amid concerns that Supreme Ventures' plan to publicly fête the winner may put that person's life at risk.
There has never been a case where the lotto jackpot has gone uncollected, and senior corporate communications officer at Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL), Carlene Edwards, is surprised the winner has not yet come forward to claim the cash.
"It never normally takes this long (for someone to come forward). Even if they don't come in, they would call to find out what the process is," she explained.
Under the rules governing the game, winners have 90 days after the numbers are drawn to collect their prize. Failing this, Edwards said half the money is paid into the government's CHASE Fund and the other half used for community outreach.
One day after the February 11 draw, SVL officials announced that one player from Manchester had correctly picked the winning numbers - 6, 7, 27, 33, 34, 35.
However, SVL's plan to host the winner at a special ceremony to celebrate the historic jackpot quickly triggered fear among some lotto players.
As a result, several persons took to SVL's website to relay their concerns.
"Winning this jackpot may become a nightmare. Jamaica has become kidnapping and extortion capital," wrote one person over the name Brian Hanson.
Rethink big presentation
"What if the winnings and the exposure cost this 'lucky' person his or her life ... rethink the big presentation ceremony and the picture publication," Hanson said.
Another person, who posted under the name Jazlene, expressed the view that lotto winners should retain the right to say whether or not they want their names and pictures published "in light of the crime-infested society we live in".
Edwards acknowledged that the winner could be waiting for all the publicity to die down before coming forward, but said SVL is bound by its licence to publish lotto winners.
She explained that this stipulation by the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission lends legitimacy to the games.
Edwards said other possible reasons why the jackpot remained uncollected are that the ticket may have been lost, or the person had not checked the ticket.
A teacher does some exercises with students yesterday to help them to relax at the Tredegar Park All-Age School. - Ricardo Makyn
Taking lunch 30 minutes late may have saved lives of several students of the Tredegar Park All-Age School in St Catherine on Wednesday.
''It was 12:55 p.m. when the shot started to fire. What happened next is that I dropped to the floor with all the students, while the criminals continued firing at each other,'' said a teacher.
"The students normally go for lunch at 12:25 p.m., however, they behaved atrocious in the morning, so lunch was late. That might have saved them from injuries, as they would have been out on the playing field which was the middle ground for the gunfight," she further said.
keeping watch
On Wednesday, the Tredegar Park community was invaded by gunmen from the nearby Gravel Heights. They are said to have fired several shots close to the school, which sent the teachers and students running for cover.
Yesterday when THE WEEKEND STAR visited the school there was heavy police presence there. A number of uniformed personnel were seen keeping watch close to the school. It is expected that they will remain there until normalcy reasons in the area.
In the meantime, the Ministry of Education is expected to provide a trauma team for the institution to counsel teachers and students.
"It is a very sad thing when criminals cause disruption in the lives of children. It must stop now,'' said Colin Blair, director of communications at the Ministry.Gangs are typically thought of as groups of tough-talking, gun-slinging individuals. However, one gang that has reportedly developed in the downtown Kingston area, has taken to terrorising its victims through music.
Talk of the new gang has been on the lips of everyone in the downtown area and The WEEKEND STAR has learnt that the members, often turn their stinging and threatening lyrics into action.
According to police sources, the gang, which is called 'Gazanine' and was only recently created, is based in the Tower Street and West Street areas of the city. It is alleged that the group produces several songs laced with lewd and threatening lyrics which they distribute around town.
The songs, it is alleged, also issue threats to named persons, as well as ghastly descriptions of the acts which will be meted out to specific individuals.
young people
One resident of the affected area, told THE WEEKEND STAR that the songs have already sparked an altercation between members of the group and another man, however, things are at ease, for now.
"Yeah, one little thing did gwaan bout the place wid a man and the youth dem bout a song weh dem do a dis the man bout him mada" said the resident.
The police also indicated their awareness of the incident, but said that matter was settled.
The gang's music which seems to be the new trend on the streets is in the ears of most young people in the downtown area. The WEEKEND STAR had the opportunity to listen the songs which depict the lifestyle of a street thug. Common lines in the songs include 'gunshot and copper to di face' of a named individual.
The police claim that the Gazanine which is led by an adult, has teenage members between the ages of 17 to 19 years old, since the gang recruits only young persons.
Similar information was given to the WEEKEND STAR by residents within the area.
Residents also complained about the gang being a plague upon them, however, most persons remained tight-lipped about this statement.
This claim was confirmed by the police, who indicated that they have received some reports about the gang being a menace to the community.A war seems to be brewing between two Mountain View communities after the refusal of one of them to return guns they borrowed from the other.
The east Kingston communities are now gripped with tension after thugs from Goodridge Lane are said to have tricked their counterparts from 'Vegas' (top Jacques Road) into lending them guns and now will not return them.
The thugs from the communities were once bitter enemies but THE WEEKEND STAR has learnt that in recent times peace was brokered and there were even offers made between the sides to help each other in war.
However all hell might erupt now following an incident recently in which a number of guns, including several high-powered rifles, were sent from Vegas to the men in Goodridge Lane for additional firepower in a battle with men from Back Bush, a community also in Mountain View.
requested anonymity
It was later revealed to the Vegas thugs. However, that it was all a trick and the guns would not be returned.
"A style di bwoy dem style yu nuh see dat mi general and we and dem neva have no bad vibes ... In a case like dis wa yu expect ago happen? Yu nuh see seh a some hypocrite ting dem a deal wid," reasoned Jing-Bang, from Vegas who requested anonymity.
When THE WEEKEND STAR contacted the men from Goodridge Lane they said that the men from Vegas are hiding the truth about why the guns were not returned.
"A dat dem a tell unnu well we nuh have nuttin fi say ... Gwaan go ask dem why wi a hold on pon di machine dem," one thug said.
In the meantime the men from Vegas claim that they will stop at nothing until their weapons are returned.
When THE WEEKEND STAR contacted Superintendent Michael Bailey, head of the Kingston east division, he said that the police were aware of the long-time feud between men from the communities.
Superintendent Bailey was however, tight-lipped when asked of the new happenings between the communities. "I can't help you with that one," he simply said.
Other sources from the division, however, admitted to hearing of such a case and added that the police are maintaining a strong presence in the areas.
"We have heard the talks but we really don't care about their personal differences ... We want to keep things in order and we want to get those who are involved in criminal activities ... We are maintaining a strong presence in the whole Mountain View area," an inspector from the division said as he made reference to the February 19 incident where police personnel seized 412 rounds of assorted ammunition in the Back Bush area of Mountain View. Army fatigue, a ballistic vest and 300 sticks of ganja were also seized at a premises in the community.
Chen, who was travelling to a business meeting in Los Angeles, California with his family, expressed shock and surprise at the move by the US Government. The trip, he said, was to continue work on a project involving business retailers from several countries.
"It has really taken me by surprise as I have been travelling freely to the United States for 30-odd years," Chen told the Observer yesterday.
He said he was informed by local immigration staff that they had received a call from the US immigration authorities that the visa was cancelled. As a result, Chen's family decided to cancel their trip.
"I am taken aback. On leaving the airport I called the Jamaican ambassador in Washington. My wife also called the Consul General (at the US Embassy in St Andrew), who told her they had no reason why but confirmed that it was cancelled a month ago," he said.
He said he was at a loss as to the reason the US authorities had decided to place a restriction on his ability to travel to that country.
"I have been a public figure in this country for 15 years. It is really distressing to know that my visa has been cancelled without notice," he said. "I can't imagine a reason why. I was at the US Embassy some weeks ago looking about a visa for a family member and I presented my passport and I was not informed of the cancellation."
Chen -- whose SuperPlus chain of supermarkets posted sales of $2 billion in 1998, making it the second largest retailer in the island at the time -- said the wasted money spent on airline tickets for himself and his family was the least of his worries at this time.
"This is being taken up at the highest diplomatic level. I have already spoken to the prime minister and it is being looked into by the Jamaican ambassador in Washington and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," he told the Observer yesterday. "I am now writing to the head of the US mission here to get an explanation."
A number of Chen's supermarkets are now closed, ending what was once the largest locally owned retail outlet business in Jamaica.
RAPPER CHARLES HAMILTON RUMORED TO BE CHANGING UP . . . WILL TAKE ON A WOMAN'S NAME . . . CALL HIMSELF A FEMALE!!! |
He's currently in Atlanta working on a mixtape with B.O.B. or Bobby Ray (idk) tentatively titled "CHX and B.O.B: Freshman Friday" and he's recently decided he wants to become a female rapper.
I'M DEAD SERIOUS!!!
Charles has decided he would like to go by the name LADY DOOM from now on. Apparently the music he has been making is really MF Doomish and he'd like to rap from a "genderless" perspective.
NO this is not a new nickname, Charles really wants to re-vamp his image and has even had a secret Facebook page under the name "Myu "LadyDoom" Zik" (pronounced Music). They've been trying to convince him not to do this for the past few days but he's got his mind made up to become the best female rapper in the game.
Information reaching THE STAR is that Pelpa, born Michael Augustus Lynch, was among a group of men who took a boat from The Bahamas and tried to enter the United States.
The men are said to have jumped from the boat in a bid to escape the US Coast Guard. Lynch is said to have got into difficulties and drowned.
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Glenmore Hinds who is in charge of Operations, told THE STAR that he too has heard of the incident but could not confirm.
As THE STAR tried to get confirmation from local law enforcement authorities, a report seen on MiamiHerald.comsaid, "A Bahamian man was charged with human smuggling after a failed trip Tuesday that left one person dead ... ."
The report continued, "A police helicopter spotted the 28-foot Intrepid boat in the water off Black Point Marina on Tuesday night and followed it. As authorities tried to stop the boat, those onboard jumped into the water and tried to swim. The body of a 28-year-old Jamaican man was found in the water about 30 feet from shore."
Reports said 60 pounds of marijuana were found on the boat. Two other Jamaicans, David Coore, 27 and Delroy Coombs, 45, were charged with illegal re-entry by authorities in Miami.
A senior investigator from the St Catherine south division said although Lynch was not wanted by the police, he was the alleged leader of the 'Lynch Mob' gang which operates out of Waterford in Portmore, St Catherine.
In July 2007, Lynch and popular deejay Vybz Kartel participated in a peace march in Waterford.
This was to signify that Kartel's Gaza family and his own 'Lynch Mob' were no longer at odds following reports that the two were locked in a deadly feud said to be sparked over turf.
Information reaching THE STAR is that two thugs had planned with students of the institution, dressed the part and stayed at a section of the school known to be frequented by boys who intentionally skip classes.
A number of students were said to be robbed of their lunch money at knifepoint last week Monday and Tuesday.
School officials could not be contacted for comment but when THE STAR contacted the Area 5 headquarters last night, a source admitted that the incident happened and added that investigations were being done.
The source, a detective inspector, added that the police have since heard that the alleged robbers are from a community close to the school, and are also said to be part of a gang which includes a number of male students from the school. They are also believed to be teenagers.
"Well you know last week there was Ash Wednesday and school was drawing close to the midterm break so it seems the men used that as their opportunity since school may not have been in it's regular full swing so to speak ... We are looking into it, hopefully we can get some progress real soon," the source said.

Fantasia Barrino is under a self-imposed lockdown -- after the "American Idol" champ received a threatening letter.
It all started a few nights ago at the Pantages Theater in L.A. -- Fantasia was reading her fan mail after a performance of "The Color Purple."
Fantasia's manager tells us Barrino became alarmed over a disturbing letter loaded with racial slurs -- including the n-word -- and a line that read, "go back where you came from and die."
We're told the person who wrote the letter claims he used to work as a security guard for Fox while Fantasia was on "A.I."
Fantasia's manager tells us the singer immediately contacted theater security -- which then contacted the LAPD.
In the meantime, we're told the theater has "beefed up" security around Fantasia -- and all over the venue -- and will be screening anything sent to Barrino's dressing room before it gets to her.
Fantasia tells TMZ, "I will not be defeated by one isolated person's hatred."
Title: The Real Gangster's Wife
Author: Macka Diamond
Publishers: Page Turner Publishing House
Macka Diamond looks to action, violence and intrigue to turn heads in her second novel, The Real Gangster's Wife.
The dancehall diva surprised fans late last year with the announcement that she was in the process of writing her second novel, but took persons off guard by not following up her first novel Bun Him with the sequel. Instead the writer takes a slightly different route, sticking with a heavy dancehall base but adding a little spice.
Launched last week at the Moulin Rouge Club in Kingston, The Real Gangster's Wife follows the main character, Gina the 'Mumma', as her life takes a sudden turn. Married to the 'Don of Dons', Tony, who is currently incarcerated in England, Gina is trying her best to carry on with her life and to continue living the way she and Tony are used to - but through legitimate means.
While pursuing her dreams and having the occasional chat with her husband, Gina's fate takes a sudden turn when a trusted friend 'violates the order'. With no Tony to turn to Gina takes matters into her own hands which leads to a *lo**bath, showing that she is the 'real gangster's wife'. Macka Diamond leaves fans with two endings, both promising more to come in the sequel of the novel.
dancehall novel
Similar to Bun Him, which claimed to be Jamaica's first official dancehall novel, this novel sticks close to current dancehall issues such as the Gully/Gaza conflict which is seen in action at Uptown Mondays where selector Richie Feelings is beaten for his choice of Gaza songs.
Constant extracts from popular songs such as Mavado's Hope and Pray, Chino's From Mawning, Beenie's Gaza Mi Sey and of course Macka's own Think Bout Mi are used throughout the novel. So too are references made to popular figures such as sprinter Usain Bolt and hurdles queen Melaine Walker.
Although the story is an interesting one like Bun Him, but much shorter, some of the same problems are evident. One would expect in the second novel to see a vast improvement in writing technique, but there are a number of errors, spelling and otherwise, that should have been corrected before release. Although the popular culture-references are fun, there are some that seem too forced and don't flow naturally.
Outside of those details, more time could also have been spent on the plot development, giving readers more to read and exploring more of the history between the characters - who are few in number. Otherwise, Macka Diamond gives most of her fans a story that is familiar to many Jamaicans and an interesting read.
The St Mary police have launched a manhunt for two of the parish's most dangerous men who escaped from the Oracabessa police lock-up between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. yesterday.
The men have been identified as Trevor East, 46, of Annotto Bay and 26-year-old Shamarie Wright, otherwise called 'Shammie' also of Annotto Bay in the parish.
East was in custody on a charge of murder and two cases of shooting with intent, while Wright was charged with four counts of murder, three cases of shooting with intent and was to face identification parades for several other crimes.
Reports are that the two, who were among a group of prisoners in a cell, escaped by removing a section of the ventilation grill.
According to a release from the Constabulary Communication Network, police personnel from various divisions in Kingston as well as from Area 2, are carrying out a massive operation, with a view to finding the men.The police are investigating reports that thugs dressed in school uniforms, went into a St Catherine school twice last week and robbed a number of students.

The trial of popular dancehall deejay, Rodney "Bounty Killer" Price, on ganja charges has been postponed and is now scheduled to start on April 7.
The trial date was set for February 23, but when the deejay and his legal team appeared in court Tuesday, it was only to hear that the date had been pushed back.
Bounty was present in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates Court on Tuesday to answer to charges of possession of and smoking marijuana.
Reports are that Bounty, the leader of a dancehall group called the Alliance, was seen smoking ganja in New Kingston in October of last year when he was accosted by the police. A small quantity of the illegal substance was also allegedly taken from him.
The deejay, however, has maintained his innocence of the charge and has been out on bail.
Price, whose bail was again extended, was last in court on November 22 to answer to these charges.
Olympic and World Championship 100 metres gold medallist, Shelly-Ann Fraser, is to hit the road with the Peace and Love in Society (PALS) initiative next month for its Peace Day campaign, after being named the Grace Goodwill Ambassador for Peace.
Grace Foods and Services has partnered with PALS, through its Grace Vienna Brand, to provide the organisation with the resources and marketing necessary to carry out a high-visibility, islandwide Peace Day campaign. This year's campaign is being held under the theme 'Be a Champion for Peace'.
Ms. Fraser's participation will put a face and voice of encouragement to those battling negative attitudes to conflict resolution, given her background growing up in the violence-torn Waterhouse community. She plans to visit a PALS school accompanied by "Vinnie", the Grace Vienna mascot, to surprise students and provide treats. Her image and voice are also being used in advertising campaigns to support the PALS initiative.
At the launch of Peace Day activities, at GraceKennedy, downtown Kingston, Tuesday (February 23), Ms. Fraser said she was excited about working with the project, having experienced, firsthand, the results of non-constructive methods of conflict resolution in her community while growing up.
"I know that I will play my role well, because I know what violence can do to children. And seeing that I am a star, as one might see it, I get to bring across my point much better to children. They will understand, because I was there, so it's not as if I lived in Beverly Hills and (I am) trying to tell someone in Waterhouse don't fight, don't do this," she said.
Ms. Fraser also encouraged everyone to respond to conflict by being calm, agreeing to work it out, listening to each other's point of view and then solving the problem.
"The bigger person is the person that always walks away, no matter how it may seem," she said, as she implored parents, especially, to try to acquire good conflict resolution skills and to teach these to their children.
Several schools representatives gave testimonials regarding the impact of PALS on their school population, among them third form student at Kingston College, Romario Ballentine, who said he has been changed by the programme.
"I'm a person I don't like authority. I normally do things because they tell me not to do it. But, since the programme, they have shown me that that's not the way and what I'm doing is wrong, that there is a better way, and so I just want to tell you thanks for all that you have done for us," he said.
Brand Manager for Grace Vienna Sausages, Mr. David Reid, said that the sponsorship from Grace Foods and Services would cover the cost of Peace Day ribbons, advertising, production, new training materials for the school and the hosting of several school treats.
The company has also earmarked 25 cents from the sale of every can of Vienna sausages, for the next three months, for the PALS organisation.
PALS will host a Peace Day Concert on March 2, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Homestead Primary School, St. Catherine. Shelly-Ann Fraser's participation will be a highlight of the event.
PALS is also set to launch its Grace Vienna PALS Champion of Peace Essay Competition on March 2.
BRITAINS biggest ever EuroMillions winners have been flooded with letters begging for cash.
But megarich Nigel Page and his partner Justine Layc**k are not even at home.
It is thought they have gone abroad to spend some of their £56million haul. One postie who delivers to their £235,000 semi in Cirencester, Gloucs, said the letters were piling up.
He added: The delivery office in Cirencester is getting loads in from all over the country and even some from abroad. They are pretty vague addresses like just: To Nigel and Justine or: The Lottery Winners, Cirencester. Its absolutely crazy.
This must be what people mean when they say winning the Lottery can ruin your life because of all the attention you get.
Several begging letters have been sent to the local newspaper, the Wiltshire and Gloucestershire Standard.
One read: Hello Nigel and Justine. Congratulations. We are homeless. My father is cancer patient. Please help me. God bless you.
The papers editor Skip Walker said: We have had several people making inquiries through email and telephone calls, which we have either deleted or said: We are sorry but we arent able to help.'
Property maintenance boss Nigel, 43, won £56,008,113.20 two weeks ago.
Friends say he will now marry his partner of eight years, estate agent Justine, 41. Tonights EuroMillions jackpot is an estimated £25m.

A £2million star-studded TV advert run by the Government has been blasted a waste of money.
Taxpayers cash has been spent hiring celebs like Madness star Suggs, 49, and model Kelly Brook, 30.
Spending watchdogs are fuming over the DirectGov campaign to help people access public services.
It comes after Labour was slammed for splurging £232m on advertising last year.
They have been accused of wasting more taxpayers money in a vanity exercise as they try to cling onto power.
DirectGov is a Government website that offers help with claiming benefits, finding jobs, renewing tax discs and registering deaths.
The advert is intended to encourage more Brits to access public services online, saving cash in the long run.
Squandering
But it has racked up a huge budget paying for a string of stars, plus production costs and airtime.
Even the voice-over is provided by Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren, 64, in the costly promo.
It is based on the Madness hit It Must Be Love and also features Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels star Nick Moran, 40, and Honor Blackman, 84.
Im A Celebrity contestants Janet Street-Porter, 63, and Christopher Biggins, 61, complete the costly line-up.
The initial price of the ad is thought to have been around £1million but red-faced ministers admit this has now doubled. Shadow Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude slammed out of control Government spending.
He said: Labour seem more focused on squandering our money on vanity PR projects rather than actually addressing the pressing problems of the country.
Mark Wallace, from the Taxpayers Alliance, added: Its bad enough being heckled by government propaganda in every advertising break, but it is galling to be forced to fund it out of our taxes. Even leaving aside whether the adverts are necessary, it is clearly wasteful and self-indulgent to spend a fortune hiring a small army of celebrities.
These expensive adverts have become so irritating they actually leave a negative impression rather than communicating the intended message.
But Work and Pensions Minister Jim Knight said: Negotiations on the involvement of these artists in the project were conducted by the Central Office of Information and all of the above agreed to participate in the advert for a fraction of their normal commercial time.
Sexy Kelly is shown driving a truck while advising people on how to find out about getting new skills.
Ministers insist the ad has led to a surge in the numbers using DirectGov and could lead to savings of up to £400million.
