The Eagles have a $1.5 million upcoming roster bonus for Vick, and they'll pick it up, but they might very well turn around and shop him after that. The two questions for Vick in 2010 are: Can he be a legit NFL quarterback again, and where might he get the chance to do so? The candidates, as we see them right now:
Carolina Panthers: "If I could play for any team in the league, it would probably be two teams, but if I had to pick one, it would probably be the Carolina Panthers," Vick said in an appearance on Hot 107.9 in Atlanta, according to the Charlotte Observer.
Why the Panthers?
"Well, you know, it's close to home," Vick said. "I like the uniforms. You get to play against Atlanta twice a year. Ain't nothing better than playing against your former team, right? So, yeah, that would be a good look, it would be a good look."
Carolina's probably looking for ways to unburden themselves from that awful Jake Delhomme(notes) contract in the impending uncapped year, and their power offense would look good with a few hundred read-option snaps. If this happens, the only thing I'd say to Vick is to lay off the revenge juice when it comes to the Falcons -- they owe him less than nothing.
St. Louis Rams: If the Rams don't take Sam Bradford or trade for Donovan McNabb, this could be an intriguing fit. This offense is desperately short of playmakers, running back Steven Jackson aside, and the addition of Vick could do what the option does for a lot of college offenses -- set defenses on their heels without great talent. In addition, tackle Jason Smith(notes), their first-round pick last year, might be more comfortable on the right side in the short term. He is definitely better in a two-point stance right now, and would protect Vick's blind side. Vick could at least hold the Rams' offense to a minimal standard while all the personnel holes are filled.
Buffalo Bills: A great fit. Maybe the best of all. New head coach Chan Gailey had great success with Tyler Thigpen in Kansas City, running various short shotgun college-type sets as KC's offensive coordinator. The Bills, like the Rams, are short quite a few weapons, and they're always desperate for people who will put butts in the seats. T.O.'s on the way out, which leaves an opening in both categories.
Oakland Raiders: I've always thought this would be an outstanding scheme fit -- not because of (insert Raiders joke here), but because Darren McFadden(notes) ran the Wildcat at Arkansas and has a lot of experience with option sets -- he's done a little bit of that in Oakland. On the other hand, the Raiders are inexplicably committed to JaMarcus Russell(notes) and will give Bruce Gradkowski(notes) a second-round tender.
Philadelphia Eagles: There are those who believe that the real reason the Eagles signed Vick was not to be Donovan McNabb's(notes) backup in 2009; it was perhaps to be his replacement in 2010 or 2011. I heard Greg Cosell of NFL Films, whose opinion I greatly respect, say this on SIRIUS NFL Radio a few months back, and it's an interesting idea. Vick is obviously more comfortable with the Eagles' offense than he has been before, and it's not impossible to imagine a McNabb trade. Problems with this scenario are that Philly has been committed to Kevin Kolb(notes) for a while, and they'll have to find ways to better fit Vick in as a real quarterback and drop the gimmicky stuff that simply didn't work.
In the end, I see Vick going to Buffalo if the Eagles don't keep him. The Bills need a quarterback in a shallow draft pool, the coach will be able to use him in more ways than just about any other, and it's a good, under-the-radar location for Vick to get his feet under him again as a full-time starter.

Hapless footballers are always finding new ways to score on their own team, but this might be the first time overpowering winds are to blame for redirecting the ball and notching an own goal.
In the second half of a real match between German lower division sides TSV Wimsheim and TSV Grunbach last Sunday, a Grunbach player attempted to launch a booming kick against the intense winds only to have the ball hang in the sky and come right back the way it came, bounce high over the goalkeeper's head and into the net, giving Wimsheim a 1-0 lead.
Wimsheim would go on to win 2-1, but if you're Grunbach, I think you just have to accept that the universe was against you that day and move on. Or consider that Newton's Laws of Motion weren't a joke.
Tommy Thompson, CEO of Brite Lite Funeral services. - Norman Grindley
Brite Lite Funeral Home owner Tommy Thompson is back again with another showdown set for June, as he plans to take clashes to another level for The Unfinished Business.
Having created a stir with his Settlement on February 13 in St Thomas, which featured the comical clash between Mr G and L.A. Lewis, Merciless versus Gabriel and Lisa Hyper against Queen Paula, Tommy Thompson is now looking to make his show even better.
Thompson says he is looking to return to the stage-show business on June 12 at the Jamalco Sports Complex in Clarendon for The Unfinished Business.
want more
He told THE WEEKEND STAR, "We got a lot of good reviews from the last one (show), we made an impact, getting calls even from people overseas who saw the clashes on YouTube and want more. Based on the fact that a lot of people didn't get to come to the Settlement because of rain in St Thomas and Kingston, we want to do Unfinished Business."
According to Thompson, there is a market for this type of stage show and unlike last time where the support from sponsors was slow in coming, this time around he says he has been getting good responses from a number of interested sponsors. "What I liked about the Settlement was that there was no animosity, people warred onstage and back stage was laughing and talking, it was peaceful," he said.
At the Settlement, while the crowd was small partially due to the rainfall that went until the early hours of the morning, there were some memorable clashes such as the lyrical 'killing' of veteran Merciless by Gabriel, Lisa Hyper by Queen Paula and L.A. Lewis who was laid to rest by Mr G. Since the Settlement however, both Merciless and L.A. Lewis have been clamouring for a rematch.
Thompson said, "Right now we're in the process of making some calls but Merciless is still on, he needs to get back at Gabriel. Lisa Hyper might be back on the show and Face also. Despite what happened last time, she wants to be on the second show." Also on the show, Thompson is hoping to book Aidonia and Blak Ryno, but still maintain the party vibe in-between the clashes.
He elaborated, "We want to bring back Goofy and LA, they are both saying they want to do it, Goofy wants to take LA out in front of a larger crowd once and for all. While LA has been putting out songs aimed at Goofy. I told LA already that this time if he loses, he has to go in the casket and take pictures and he agreed to that. I'm putting them back onstage, so who dies, dies permanently."
Errol Green, a 49-year-old hotel worker and his 16-year-old stepson Michael Fowler, both of Hyatts Field, Mile End, St Ann, were chopped to death and their bodies, dumped in a pit behind their home on Wednesday.
Reports are that about 3 p.m., after Green and Fowler had not been seen for the entire day, residents became concerned. The police were alerted and called to assist in searching for the two.
Investigators who responded, observed *lo** stains in the house and found the bodies of the two with multiple chop wounds in the pit. A unit from the Ocho Rios Fire Department and residents removed the bodies from the pit.
The Ocho Rios CIB is investigating.
Councillor for the Boscobel division in St Mary, Michael Belnavis, has welcomed the new attraction, Skydive Jamaica, which has opened at Boscobel Aerodrome in the parish.
According to Belnavis, the facility presents an opportunity for jobopenings for parishioners and for the inflow of much-needed foreign exchange.
"Added to that, it's always good when you have a new attraction, especially in a situation such as this wherein Skydive Jamaica offers something totally new. It's exciting," Belnavis told The Gleaner last Wednesday.
The facility has been getting attention as Jamaicans react to the introduction of the hair-raising sport which is quite popular worldwide.
Skydive Jamaica specialises in tandem skydives, which are reputed to be the safest and most popular form of the thrill sport. It also caters to experienced, licensed skydivers.
Typical jump
A typical dive sees a diver jumping out of an airplane at more than 12,500 feet (around 2.3 miles), free-falling for a while before the instructor pulls the cord releasing the parachute, which allows one to glide safely to land.
Belnavis said while Skydive Jamaica might not directly employ a lot of Jamaicans, there will be several persons who will benefit indirectly in areas such as transportation, food and beverage, and art and craft.
Belanvis also welcomed the $300-million upgrading work being carried out at the Boscobel Aerodrome, which will see an expanded runway and other general improvements. This will include a new terminal building and fire truck garage, lighting for the runway and perimeter fencing.
Boscobel is set to be the island's third international airport and will cater mainly to private jets.
A man accused of wounding his mentally challenged aunt after she damaged a fowl coop and set his chickens free, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
The accused, who was brought before Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey, told the court that his aunt, has a mental condition and causes a lot of contention at their home. He told the court that on the day in question, his aunt was beating a drum and disturbing the peace. He said he spoke to her about it and they had an argument.
The accused said he left the yard and when he returned, he saw the coop destroyed and the fowls running loose. He said he confronted her, pushed her and she fell, injuring herself.
The complainant tried to tell the court her story, but it soon became obvious that her mind was full of years of stories that she wanted to tell. She rambled on and on, sometimes interjecting points relevant to the case, and at other times, talked about far-fetched ideas and situations.
Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey told the accused that he needs to take care of his aunt, especially since it was obvious that she was ill. She said the actions of the aunt could not be used against her as she was not in her right mind.
The court made plans for the complainant to be taken to a mental institution and the matter was dismissed.
GOVERNMENT IS claiming the revocation of Wayne Chen's UnitedStates (US) visa is not related to the ongoing tussle over the extradition of alleged drug lord Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.
"The United States authorities have advised the foreign minister that there is no connection, and we have no reason to question the honesty of the statement conveyed by the US authorities to the foreign minister," Golding told Parliament yesterday.
He was responding to a question posed by Central Manchester Member of Parliament Peter Bunting, who asked whether Chen's visa was revoked because of the refusal to send Coke.
Chen, chairman of the Urban Development Corporation, found out that his visa was cancelled last week when he attempted to travel to the US.
He later sought the Government's intervention as he attempted to find out the reasons for the revocation, as well as for him to be granted another visa.
Rumours have since swirled that several other public officials have had their visas revoked by the US. However, Golding told Parliament that he was not aware of any other persons who have had a similar experience to Chen's.
It will probably be a number of years before young Betty'smind fully understands what had and could have happened approximately two weeks ago when criminals stole her parents' car in broad daylight, while she had a passenger seat view of the incident.
The child, who appeared to be no older than three, was able to recall her parents' ordeal as if it were just yesterday. As THE WEEKEND STAR stood at the front gate of her parents' home, the little pink-clad angel said: "The gunman took away daddy's car."
Her tone was that of childish innocence, the type that makes you say "awww, how cute", even though there was nothing pleasant about the event.
Google-Ann, the child's mother, still has problems talking about the situation, it is not everyday that she has a gun pointed to their chest at close range and gets ordered around in no pleasant terms.
"My knees get weak when I remember it," she said.
And after finally mustering up enough courage, she shared her experience."It was about 6:55 a.m. last Monday and my husband and my daughter were outside, he was putting water in the vehicle," she recalled. "My husband put my daughter in the car and I was going around to get in when I saw two guys walking up the street. They looked normal but they were walking fast."
brandished guns
The mother and wife recalled that the next thing she saw was when both men brandished guns from under their shirts and stated: "Hey gyal if you move or mek nuh noise we kill yuh!"
She said the thugs held both her husband and herself at gunpoint and gained access to their Honda motor car. As soon as the thugs got inside they threw out little Betty's school bag and lunch kit. The mother said she asked them not to take her baby and they ordered her to remove her from the backseat. They then sped off and fired two shots in the air as they escaped.
Google-Ann's family is just one of many in the Ensom City, St Catherine community that are being plagued by crooks.
Just a day before their incident, on another avenue some seconds away, the driver of a 2006 Suzuki Swift was saved, not by the bell, but by the kill switch on the car.
The driver and a relative had just returned home after purchasing ice cream when the armed thieves pounced. It was 2:25 p.m. and the sun was still enjoying the Sunday afternoon.
"As we drove up they walked up towards us and one of them took out a gun," the resident recalled. She said the crook then grabbed the keys, shoved her relative and herself out of the way and fired a warning shot before telling everybody to "run!"
The men then made off with the car but they did not get very far. The kill switch in the vehicle soon stopped it and the criminals abandoned the vehicle. The owner later recovered it.
Another resident shared her encounter which took place in January when she pulled up in her driveway sometime after 8:30 p.m. after a church service. The woman said that just as her son and herself exited the vehicle and made their way to the house's entrance, she noticed two guys walking up the street.
She did not pay them much mind however, but the next glance that she took over her shoulder would reveal one of the men pointing a gun at her.
"So I shouted out and started pleading the *lo** against them," the woman said. "The one with the gun said 'is just because you a Christian yuh nuh', then they ran off."
The WEEKEND STAR heard of numerous other cases where residents' vehicles were stolen in the wink of an eye. There was even talk of residents being taken along for a ride after their cars were stolen. In a few of the cases the crooks even left the owners by the roadway, offering them $100 to find their way back home. These persons could not be reached however.
Bancroft Anglin, head of the community's neighbourhood watch said that the theft of cars has become a "sore issue" for the area but he said that he believed the police were increasing their efforts against the crime.
When the Spanish Town Police were contacted about the matter a senior cop said that the police were doing all they could to cure the plague with the limited resources they had.

There's more to come for Romeich Record's debut rhythm, Bank Inna Mi Pocket. Released in late February, top guns Mavado, Bounty Killer and Aidonia are set to add their voices to the rhythm.
The debut release from the designer-turned-producer Romeich Major and his partners Rayon 'Slida' Curate and Donovan Davis, Bank Inna Mi Pocket has been getting attention on air and in the streets.
With seven artistes, from the more experienced KipRich and Mr Lex to newcomers Flexxx and T'Nez, Bank Inna Mi Pocket covers vast topics from girls, to money and bad mind behaviour.
KipRich brings a war vibe with his Stamma as he calls out anyone ready to speak up to the feisty deejay as he says, "cyaan violate inna deh town yah, afta yuh nuh come from around yah."
Flexxx continues his gallis argument with Gallis Fi Dem that talks about him being all about the girls from a tender age. In Nuh Gal Nuh Waan Dem Mr Lex is about his 'swag' as he deejays, "so when dem see we wid some girl dem only see inna dem dream, dem tun on dem bad mind siren."
Stacious, the only female representing on the rhythm, takes a slightly different route seeing the deejay singing more than usual in Stop Me From Shine. The other singer on the rhythm T'Nez is one of the stand outs with Wah Dem A Pree. Also on the rhythm is Versatile, whose song the rhythm was named after and Einstein with Bad Man Nuh War Ova Gal.
When THE WEEKEND STAR spoke to Romeich he explained that the rhythm has been doing well saying, "its playing a lot on all major stations. It's on the new jugglings in the streets and it's playing in the street dances. To how the people are taking on to it, I expect a lot especially as Mavado, Bounty and Aidonia are sure to be added to the rhythm sometime this month."
As for future projects from Romeich Records he added, "I have singles to come out soon from my artiste Versatile and finishing up my one drop rhythm. And I'm now working on my follow-up dancehall rhythm."
Mikey Pelpa - file photos
Less than a week after news that Waterford deejay Mikey Pelpa had died, his music lives on with the release of his song Waterford Anthem.
Produced by Equiknoxx Music, Waterford Anthem was remixed and released this week in memory of the deejay.
Last week, THE WEEKEND STAR received reports that the alleged community leader and artiste, born Michael Augustus Lynch, was among a group of men who took a boat from The Bahamas and tried to enter the United States. The men are said to have jumped from the boat in a bid to escape the US Coast Guard, Pelpa is said to have gotten into difficulties and drowned.
Pelpa was the alleged leader of the 'Lynch Mob' gang which operates out of Waterford in Portmore, St Catherine.
tribute to his community
While Pelpa is gone he is not forgotten by members of the music fraternity, having left behind a tribute to his community through the song Waterford Anthem. In the song Pelpa talks about the community and its history of violence as he says, "lemme tell yuh bout Waterford."
When THE WEEKEND STAR spoke to Equiknoxx producer Gavin Blair, he explained that the song was recorded in early 2009 on a juggling rhythm which was never completed and never released. Following news of Pelpa's death, Blair, went in his studio and created a new beat for the song.
According to Blair the song is special to him saying, "I always wanted to produce that song after attending his birthday party in 2008 and watching him perform it. I was in awe, the whole vibe of the party was crazy. The man block off one of the main roads in Waterford and partially carpeted the streets. He put up a stage that was probably the same size as a Sumfest stage, with some very huge lights and the performance was great."
Blair says he is very proud of doing the song and knows that Pelpa's Waterford community will love it. He said, "after I learnt of his death, I never got weak, did the opposite. I got the strength and went in the studio in the early morning and just did it. He would love it. I got several signs in the studio while doing it. One point I was talking to myself while the rhythm was playing, I was like Pelpa gimme a sign dat yuh feeling dis and the ad-lib track just mysteriously started to play and his Untouchable jingle came up, is jus a sign."
According to Blair, Equiknoxx Music will also be producing a tribute song for the deejay.
Lawyers representing dancehall superstar Buju Banton returned to court yesterday to demand more details on the confidential informant who is a key witness in the case.
Attorney-at-law David Markus told the court that while he has been provided with some information, he did not have enough to cross examine the witness when the trial begins on April 19.
Markus said based on the information he has received so far, the informant has already been paid thirty-five thousand US dollars for his role in helping prosecutors make their case against Buju and could get more if the dancehall star is convicted.
tax case
The attorney said the informant, whose name has not been disclosed, could get a portion of any money which the court orders Buju to forfeit.
Marcus, who has repeatedly argued that Buju was set up, claimed he needed details about a tax case involving the informant and details of the other cases the informant has worked on with law enforcement agencies.
Buju, whose correct name is Mark Myrie, has been in custody since last December when he was slapped with drugs and firearm charges.
The reggae icon is accused of conspiracy to posses cocaine and aiding and abetting the possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime
Philpott Martin, the 26-year-old college student accused of hacking into Digicel's mainframe and stealing approximately $10 million worth of call credit, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Martin is facing charges of simple larceny.
The court was, however, informed that documents relating to the case were still outstanding and a new mention date was set.
The allegations are that Martin was employed to Airtime Limited in Kingston and was assigned a user name to access the network. It is alleged that he accessed Digicel's system and transferred the credit. The court was told that further investigations are ongoing and the figure involved could be increased.
Martin, who is now on bail, was told to return to court on March 29. His bail was extended.
Saucy ... couple romping in street
The daring duo are being hunted after a motorist passed on the saucy snap to cops.
A police spokesman said: "We want to find this couple because such behaviour is not permissible."
The open air sex session took place on Sunday in the industrial city of Krefeld, West Germany.
Motorists said the cheeky pair were at it for at least ten minutes.
A local cab driver said: "I nearly crashed my cab, it's not something you see every day in the middle of the road."
Spanish Town is the former Spanish and English capital of Jamaica.
It held the status of capital city from the 16th to the 19th century. The city is home to certain memorials, the national archives, a small population, and one of the oldest Anglican churches outside of England (the others are in Virginia and Maryland).
Contents[hide] |
The Spanish settlement of Villa de la Vega was founded by governor Francisco de Garay in 1534 as the capital of the colony. Later, it was also called Santiago de la Vega or St. Jago de la Vega. Indigenous Taino had been living in the area for approximately a millennium before this, but this was the first European habitation on the south of the island. When the English conquered Jamaica in 1655, they renamed the capital Spanish Town. Since the town was badly damaged during the conquest, Port Royal took on many administrative roles and functioned as an unofficial capital during the beginning of the English reign. By the time Port Royal was decimated by an earthquake in 1692, Spanish Town had been rebuilt and was again functioning as the capital.
Spanish Town remained as the capital until 1872, when the seat of the colony was moved to Kingston. Kingston had been founded in the aftermath of the earthquake of Port Royal in 1692.
The centre of the town boasts a few Regency buildings, including the Rodney Memorial and the faēade of Old King's House, the residence of the governors until 1872.
The history of Spanish Town lives on in the remains of the old buildings in its street names that mark it as the start of Jamaica's overall history. Reminders of Spanish Jamaica include Red Church and White Church Streets, symbolic of the Spanish chapels of the red and white cross, as well as Monk Street, in reference to the monastery that once stood nearby. Nugent Street and Manchester Street were named for British Colonial Governors, George Nugent and William Montagu, 5th Duke of Manchester. King Street received its name because it runs past King's House and Constitution Street, near to the Square, it also refers to the fact that the island's administrative centre used to be located there
The population of Spanish Town nowadays is 148,845 (2006 population estimate). The population of Spanish Town, like the rest of the St. Catherine has been growing rapidly, causing a drastic increase of crime and violence in the city. The city has been in turmoil for the past 4 years as a result of the increase of violent murders. Steps have been taken by the government recently to stop the violence, but none of them have been successful. Mayor Raymoth Notice said the problem with Spanish Town is that there are too many guns and not enough jobs and educational opportunities.
It was for this reason that last year he launched a gun initiative, proposing to swap guns for education. Under this initiative, the mayor urged those in possession of illegal guns to turn them over, in exchange for a chance to learn new skills and further their education. Notice's initiative did not get far as he failed to pull in the required support from the national security ministry and the police.
Today, Spanish Town is sometimes referred to colloquially as "Spain Town" or "Prison Oval" within the confines of Jamaica. The latter nickname is a reference to the Cricket pitch or oval located just outside the St. Catherine District Prison where some inmates can get a limited view of the sport through their cell windows. Association football is also played at the Prison Oval; Rivoli United F.C. is the major team.
Fancy Cat, who partners with Ity to form a popular comedic duo, has very little to laugh about these days, as he is mourning the sudden and shocking death of his father, Clifton Hardware.
Hardware, 72, died about 3:30 p.m. last Wednesday, after jumping from a balcony at the University Hospital of the West Indies.
Reports are that Hardware, who had been admitted in hospital for about a week, walked on to the balcony and jumped off, despite efforts by a female nurse to restrain him.
Fancy Cat, whose real name is Alton Hardware, was informed of his father's passing last week while he was in England visiting relatives.
The comedian, who arrived in Jamaica on Monday night, told THE STAR that he was trying to cope with the death and was doing so with the help of family members. He said, "Family is around, so I have support. We just cry on each other's shoulders. We have a really big family."
The comedian said he grew up with his father and they had a "close enough" bond. He said he visited his father before he left the island and told him that he would soon return. At that time, his father had not yet been hospitalised. "Mi go check him before mi leave, cause mi know him did a go through some pressure."
About two weeks into his trip, he learnt that his father had been admitted to hospital because he was having trouble breathing. He said his father had done heart surgery in the past, so when the family got the news that he had passed, they assumed that his heart had finally given out.
"It was shocking," the comedian said about the news, "everybody couldn't believe. Wi neva prepare fi dis." He said before he got the news he was encouraging a sibling to come to Jamaica to visit their father as he was ill.
Fancy Cat said because he had just arrived in the island he had not been able to get much information about the days or hours leading up to his father's death. He, however, said he had been told that his father was "seeing things" and had been imagining that people were out to kill him.
Though facing turbulent times at home, Fancy Cat said he would continue working as this would give him an escape. He said he is to perform in New York soon. "Being onstage is my happiest time," he said. "It allows me to just block out the world."
The comedian lost his mother in 1998.
JAMAICANS spent a record $299.5 million at the cinemas over six-months to December 2009 which was 32 per cent more year-on-year due to blockbusters including Avatar and price increases.
Box office tickets were $210.4 million with an additional $89.1 million spent on popcorn, nachos, drinks, and so on, according to just-released data from Palace Amusement Co which runs the island's cinemas. The company increased prices during the period, by some 10 per cent but saw its box office tickets grow 35 per cent, indicating that movies such as Avatar and others attracted larger audiences. Up to press time, Palace did not respond to Observer queries on theatre attendance, especially for Avatar -- released locally in December to continuous sold-out shows. Box Office Mojo stated in January that Avatar was the top-grossing movie in 24 countries, including Jamaica.
Box office receipts at various local theatres were $113.8 million, $40.2 million, $42.2 million and $14.2 million at Carib Cinema, Palace Cineplex, Place Multiplex and Odeon Cineplex respectively; while confectionery sales at these theatres were $49.2 million, $17.2 million, $16.4 million and $6.3 million respectively.
The six-month review period when annualised would be $599 million or US$6.69 million -- the most Jamaicans ever spent at the movies, even discounting inflation. The previous record was US$6.09 million ($71.40/US$1) in the 2009 financial year ending June. In fact, attendance at cinemas has been declining from a high of 1.2 million in 1994 to under 900,000, according to data from Palace's annual reports.
The industry is still plagued by lacklustre films, $200 bootlegs and streaming web movies. With increased access to the high speed internet users can freely steam or download movies.
"In respect of taking legal action, the infringement rests with the copyright owners," stated Carol Simpson, head of Jamaica Intellectual Copyright Organisation, which monitors copyright infringement in a previous interview with the Observer. "It's not only the downloaders but the internet providers (ISPs) who are going to be responsible. I know that illegal downloading has been going on. And the ISPs are also aware of it."
Currently, Internet users bypass the cinemas on sites including surfthechannel.com; Privatebay.org; and watch-movies.net.
"The more you put in measures to prevent these pirates, the more they find ways to beat the system," she had said.
Blockbuster movies (July to December) according to madeinatlantis.com includes: Avatar which grossed over US$1.9 billion worldwide; Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, which grossed US$869 million worldwide; G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which grossed US$294.2 million worldwide; Michael Jackson's This Is It, which grossed US$257 million worldwide; G-Force, which grossed US$169.7 million worldwide; and District 9, which grossed US$126 million worldwide alone.

Born in Sicily to Ghanaian parents, Inter Milan's Mario Balotelli personifies a refusal to accept a multi-ethnic society
The songs are varied, offensive and, in at least one case, openly racist. "If you jump up and down, Balotelli dies" is a favourite with supporters of arguably the most famous Italian football club, Juventus.
"A negro cannot be Italian" is the chant that explains the vitriol. The target of the abuse is 19-year-old Mario Balotelli, a footballer with Italian champions Inter Milan and a rising star of Italy's Under-21 national team.
In England, Germany or France, Balotelli would be making headlines in the sports pages as one of the most exciting young prospects in the national sport. In Italy, his treatment at the hands of a minority of hostile football fans is turning him into a symbol of the country's seeming inability to embrace a multi-ethnic identity. Last Monday, Juventus were fined for anti-Balotelli chanting at a match for the second time this season.
Balotelli was born and immediately abandoned by his Ghanaian parents in the Sicilian capital, Palermo. He is an Italian passport holder and was brought up by adopted parents in Brescia from the age of two. He speaks with the accent of his region, but has received far more racist abuse than other black stars in Italian football because his Italian identity is seen by some as a provocation.
"The difference [from other black players] is Balotelli is totally black and totally Italian, and that has provoked a short circuit among fans," said Sandro Modeo, a correspondent for Corriere della Sera.
As Italy's immigrant total reaches 7%, the treatment of many of the "Balotelli generation" the half-million children of immigrants born in Italy who qualify by law for Italian citizenship on their 18th birthday is becoming an increasingly controversial issue in a country which still, overwhelmingly, considers itself white.
Yesterday, a black Italian writer, Pap Khouma, wrote an open letter to La Repubblica, headlined "Being a black Italian: my life as an obstacle course". In it, he described incidents of routine discrimination: regular requests to provide his permit to stay in Italy; being mistaken for a street-seller by his Milanese neighbours. On one occasion, running through Milan's streets late for work, Khouma was stopped by a policeman, asked for his papers and escorted to the local station as a non-EU "foreigner". "Have you any idea," Khouma asked the paper's readers, "what it means to be Italian and black in Italy in 2009?"
For Gian Antonio Stella, a columnist for Corriere della Sera, the racism is evident and ignoring it a national pastime. "Britain has reflected on its colonial past, Germany has done the same with Nazism, but Italians still believe the myth of the Good Italian, soft colonialism and insist the racial laws of the 1930s were passed by fascists, not Italians," he said.
Despite the difficulties, the Balotelli generation is beginning to make its presence felt. The Italian under-14 cricket team is largely made up of Asian-Italians and won a European tournament this summer. Lihao Zhang, an 11-year-old girl of Chinese extraction, living in Voghera, the Lombardy heartland of the xenophobic Northern League party, received glowing press reviews after winning a school competition this year for poetry written in local dialect.
"The offspring of immigrants are easing into Italian culture, meaning Italian traditions are not going to be lost," said Alessandro Campi, a professor of political science at the University of Perugia. "If anything, these children will have more problems with their own families' cultures than with their friends'."
As for Balotelli, a one-match ban for Juventus fans from their home stadium, follow-up fines of over 20,000 (£18,000) for the club and questions in parliament have failed to stop the chants, which are not limited to Turin, where the club is based. The coach of Ghana's national team, Milovan Rajevac, has publicly invited him to play for the country in next summer's World Cup. And the beginnings of a backlash against the abuse may be beginning. Some commentators are now calling for the 6ft 2in striker to be selected immediately for the Italian team.
"I am sorry for Balotelli, he should be left alone to play football, but right now he is symbol of a cultural shift in Italy and a yardstick for whether we can make that change," said Stella, the Corriere della Sera columnist.
Growing up in rich, industrial Brescia, the player became used to racial abuse during school matches, with parents pointing to his height and claiming "with these Africans you can never tell what age they really are".
"Mario always needed love and affection," his adoptive sister Cristina told the French newspaper L'Equipe. "He wouldn't go to sleep without his mother holding his hand."
On the pitch as a professional, he has sometimes been unable to ignore the hostility from the stands. Faced with Roma fans who reportedly threw bananas at him in a bar, he stuck his tongue out at an opposition defender after scoring against them. For that, claimed the Roma captain Francesco Totti, he "deserved a slap".
"It's a shame that everyone is more upset with me than with the people yelling at me," replied Balotelli.
If Balotelli is indeed picked by Italian national coach Marcello Lippi to play in the World Cup next summer, the selection may signal a new era for black Italians. And as more and more of their white compatriots realise that the country's ethnic make-up is changing, support is at least beginning to emerge across the political spectrum.
"Balotelli is stubborn, combative and can be a bit of a bully, but at the same time he is generous, brave and irreverent," said Fare Futuro, a think-tank run by the prominent centre right politician Gianfranco Fini. "He is pure talent. Genius and lack of restraint all in one. What else could be more Italian than that?"
LOS ANGELES Michael Jackson's children were never exposed to a mail-order stun gun recently delivered to the family's home, an attorney for the late singer's mother said Tuesday.
Child services workers are investigating the incident, but attorney Adam Streisand said the stun gun was confiscated before any harm was done. Streisand represents Jackson's mother, Katherine, who has custody of her son's three young children, Prince Michael, Paris and Prince Michael II, also known as Blanket.
Streisand said the weapon was ordered by the 13-year-old son of Jermaine Jackson, Jafar, and sent to the Jackson family home in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles. Jermaine Jackson's children also live in the home.
"Jafar opened the package in his bathroom and tested it on a piece of paper," Streisand said in a statement. He said security and Katherine Jackson heard the sound and confiscated the weapon immediately.
He said Michael Jackson's oldest son, Prince, saw the stun gun after it was taken by security.
"Blanket Jackson never saw or heard the Taser," Streisand said in the statement. "Neither did Paris Jackson. Prince saw the Taser in possession of security."
Streisand said child services workers have not provided him or Katherine Jackson with an update on the agency's inquiry. A phone message left for the agency was not immediately returned, but it doesn't usually comment on its cases.
"All of the kids are happy, healthy and wonderful, and that is Mrs. Jackson's only objective and concern," Streisand said.
Katherine Jackson has been caring for the children since their father's death June 25 at age 50. The children range in age from 8 to 13.
All attended a star-studded memorial held in July at the Staple Center. The eldest children, Prince Michael and Paris, also spoke during a segment at February's Grammy Awards where Michael Jackson was given a posthumous lifetime achievement award.
Their father was fiercely protective of his children's privacy and images, often covering their faces when they were in public.
Prince Michael and Paris are the children of Michael Jackson's ex-wife Debbie Rowe, who was granted some visitation with them after the singer's death. The identity of Blanket's mother has never been revealed.
As part of an agreement between Rowe and Katherine Jackson, a child psychologist was required to structure visits and monitor the children. Katherine Jackson was initially granted more than $86,000 a month to pay for the family home and care for Michael Jackson's children, but that allowance was recently increased. The current amount has not been publicly disclosed.
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge has oversight of Katherine Jackson's guardianship of the children and has praised her in open court.
Streisand said in an e-mail that he does not expect the stun gun incident to become a factor in the guardianship case. Meg Lodise, a court-appointed attorney representing the three youngsters' interests in their father's estate, did not return a phone message seeking comment.
olar has totally cut us off.the doctors and the staff at the hospital will not discuss any information with Gurus family.in order for the family to change the situation, we have to hire a lawyerunfortunately we dont have a couple of weeks, my uncle Guru is in a serious.I know that Solar has been his right hand man, day in and day out, for the last 6 years, but does that not give him the right to make decidsion whether of not his own family gets to see Guru or learn about his status. The fact that hes acting like this lets me know he does not have Gurus best interest in mind. It is a control thing with Solar.
On Tues, I send Solar a text message [checking to see if I could get an update on Guru's status]. Solar sent me a response that said: Trish [Guru's sister, ] started this!!! And guru would never have told her he was in the hospital, this is horrible what she did!! Now I need to care for Guru. Peace.
Stamp "The media" Lippi continued, "are like political parties, they have their list of candidates and there isn't any danger of them presenting them late because of a stamp here or a missing signature there. He repeated, "I have my own opinion about who will be on the team, and good reason for it, and I'll stick to that". Lippi then explained why he is looking forward to Balotelli maturing. "He really is a very nice lad. I am ever more convinced of how important it is for him to play in an international club alongside world-class players. From them he will get to understand and learn the spirit of sacrifice and many other things. Then he moved onto Nesta. "All I'm saying is that I haven't given up hope yet."
Gym session Montecarlo had a rather unusual welcome for the Italy squad: a wind that was so strong Lippi's team couldn't train outdoors. So the morning session was switched to the gym instead: just a little hiccup that shouldn't affect the players' preparation too much.

TAMPA - The informant who helped federal agents build a drug case against Jamaican reggae singer Buju Banton has been paid $3.3 million for helping law enforcement in numerous cases over several years, lawyers said in court this morning.
An attorney for Banton, whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie, said he plans to argue that the singer was entrapped by the informant, who pestered him for months to join him in a cocaine deal.
Myrie is being held without bail on charges of conspiring to distribute cocaine and aiding and abetting his co-defendants in possessing a firearm during the course of cocaine distribution.
The Drug Enforcement Administration has said in court filings that Myrie contacted a confidential informant about a possible cocaine purchase. The next day, Myrie and other men met with the informant at Sarasota's La Tropicana de Havana restaurant, where the DEA and local police had set up video and audio surveillance.
Defense attorney David Oscar Markus told U.S. Magistrata Thomas Wilson this morning that prosecutors have not provided enough information about the informant for him to be prepared to cross-examine him at Myrie's trial, scheduled for April 19.
Markus outlined information that the government has given him about the informant:
The informant's name, which Markus did not disclose in court.
He was paid more than $35,000 for his cooperation in the case against Myrie and is also paid on a contingency basis, receiving a portion of the money the judge orders the defendant to forfeit.
He was convicted in South Florida in 1993 of distributing cocaine in a case that brought a minimum mandatory prison sentence of 10 years.
He transported large amounts of cocaine and marijuana between 1984 and 1993.
He is a legal, permanent resident of the United States from Colombia and was granted that immigration status after law enforcement requested it.
When he testified in one case, a judge questioned his credibility.
He is involved in a tax dispute with the IRS.
He has worked with the prosecutor in Myrie's case for more than 10 years.
But Marcus said he needs more details, such as details about the tax case, information on other cases the informant has worked and specifics on the informant's criminal history.
Marcus also asked for a list of the amounts of money the informant was paid in each case. Marcus said he thinks the amount has escalated over the years.
Assistant U.S. Attorney James Preston said he has complied with court requirements and turned over all information that might help the defense. Providing details on every case the informant has worked could put the informant in danger, Preston said.
Although Wilson said Marcus wasn't necessarily entitled to more information, the judge ordered the prosecution to give the defense any communications by law enforcement or prosecutors asking for beneficial treatment in the informant's tax case and immigration file. Wilson also ordered the prosecutor to give the defense a list of cases in which the informant has testified for the prosecution.

Deejay Vybz Kartel says he will not be recording a counteraction song for Blak Ryno's Mi Lef, the artiste's 'tell all' song about his departure from the Portmore Empire.
The deejay declared his intentions to remain silent when contacted by THE STAR yesterday.
On Monday, Blak Ryno seemed to have answered all the questions surrounding his departure from the Vybz Kartel-led Portmore Empire. His song, Mi Lef, produced by Supa Blunt, has created a buzz in the entertainmentfraternity as Ryno fires lyrical shots at his former mentor who last week described the young deejay as a confused individual.
In the song he deejays, "Di bwoy dem a faker, Jamaica/ mi tell yuh dis, I neva lef through paper/ lef because dem a violater/ mi cut because mi waan mi life greater/him chat mi behind a mi back, weh yuh waan smile in front mi face fah/like yuh feel man a idiot/yuh cyaan do me like weh yuh do di raper."
Ryno also goes further to explain in the song that he was called in for a 'meeting', which he never went to and how he is now looking forward to success in the future as an artiste. He deejays, "all dem a talk sey mi nah make it/me a go live fi be di best."
Following the song's introduction to the airwaves, several persons began speculating that Kartel would reply lyrically to Ryno. When THE STAR spoke to Kartel yesterday about the song and whether he would be replying, he didn't have much to say on the matter.
The deejay simply stated, "Ryno and I aren't on that page where he does a song and I reply. He and I know what time it is."
Ryno left the Empire officially last week after weeks of speculation that he and his Empire crew where no longer on good terms. The deejay is the third artiste to leave the Empire in recent times following Lisa Hyper and Kym - formerly Gaza Kim.

PROMINENT United States-based attorney, Professor David
Rowe, says he has very little hope that reggae star Buju Banton's
entrapment plea will hold up in a US court.
Rowe said the US revelation that the prosecution has video recordings of
Baton, whose real name is Mark Myrie, tasting cocaine and participating
in arrangements for the sale of contraband, will work against him in a
big way.
"I see his chances as begin very low. He is on video offering cocaine
for sale. I don't think the entrapment argument has a great deal of
effort," Rowe told Chat! yesterday.
Banton was held in December last year by US Federal authorities at his
Tamarac, Florida home and charged with conspiracy to distribute five or
more kilograms of cocaine. This, following a sting operation at a Drug
Enforcement Agency (DEA) controlled warehouse in Tampa, which resulted
in the arrest of two other men who were about to purchase cocaine from
undercover agents.
He has since argued that he was the victim of entrapment and his lawyer
David Markos, has publicly said he intends to argue along that line when
the trial involving Banton begins next month.
Rihanna's 22nd birthday was a major improvement over her big 2-1, which came just weeks after she was assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown. This year, the chanteuse celebrated her milestone at a surprise party thrown by her budding Los Angeles Dodgers beau, Matt Kemp.
E! News reports RiRi was "shocked" by the bash, which Kemp spent a month pulling together in Phoenix, where he's in spring training. The celebratory touches enjoyed by the 40-strong crowd included cupcakes, tiki torches, flowers, engraved bottles of bubbly and a Jamaican chef serving up hors d'oeuvres.
The night's pičce de résistance: a birthday cake done up with replicas of the chanteuse's many tattoos, which include stars, a gun, musical notes, a pink bow-wearing skull-and-crossbones, a Pisces sign, the word "Shhhhh" on her finger, and her latest, the saying, "Never a failure, always a lesson."
"It was so sweet," says a source, "and she was really
surprised."
Kemp, who recently insisted that Rihanna was "just a friend, a good friend of mine," also reportedly surprised her with a custom-made diamond necklace.
One more surprise: The chart-topper received a b-day dance from a little-person stripper. The awkward moment was captured on video by TMZ, which makes things even more awkward by revealing the teeny dancer's day job: She's a porn star named Bridget the Midget.

ACTRESS PAULA PATTON: I FIND THE TERM BIRACIAL OFFENSIVE . . . I CONSIDER MYSELF BLACK!!! |
I find [the term biracial] offensive. Itās a way for people to separate themselves from African-Americansā¦.a way of saying āIām better than thatā.
Iām black because thatās the way the world sees me. People arenāt calling Barack Obama biracial. Most people think thereās a black president.
