The police have launched a manhunt for a prisoner who escaped custody last week.

Patrick Henry, who is facing three counts of murder and shooting, jumped from a police vehicle last Tuesday along Red Hills Road.

It is reported that the prisoner was being transported from the Gun Court to the police lock-up at Red Hills when he jumped from the police vehicle in his handcuffs and escaped.

Henry, a deportee, was also being investigated by the MIT for other murders committed in the downtown, Kingston area.

And a known associate of one of Manchester's most wanted criminals was held during an operation at Silent Hill, Christiana on Wednesday morning.

A quantity of assorted ammunition was taken from him.

His name is being withheld pending further investigation.

Information received by the Constabulary Communication Network is that about 3:30, an operation was carried out in a section of the community known as "Base" where a house occupied by the man was searched and 22 assorted rounds of ammunition were found.

He was subsequently taken into custody.

It has come to the attention of the Portmore Empire that there are unauthorized persons accepting money for bookings on behalf of the organisation. We have strongly advised those persons to cease and desist from this unsanctioned activity or else there will be consequences.

We would like to advise promoters of events, especially those located in the Caribbean, the US and Europe that the Empire does not operate through a broker/booking agent, but all requests for bookings ought to be made directly to lengaza@gmail.com, or cmillsy@yahoo.com.
The contact number for Gaza Government Bookings is (876) 781-4268. We will not be held liable for any bookings which have not come through either of these avenues.

We would like to further add that we intend to honour all bookings made on behalf of Blak Ryno before his departure from the Empire. He has been advised which dates are outstanding, and all monies for those dates have been paid to him. It is therefore incumbent on him to fulfil those obligations because we have fulfilled our end of the deal. We will no longer be accepting any future bookings for Blak Ryno, or the artistes formerly known as Gaza Kim or Lisa Hype.

Singjay I-Octane has hired Khool International to do exclusive bookings for him.

According to the artiste as of April 1 the company will be exclusively responsible for all of his bookings. He says he is looking forward to the working relationship with them.

"After careful consideration, I think this is the way to go," he said of his decision to hire Khool International.

In other news I-Octane is now gearing up to premiere his latest music video for the single "Think A Little Time" this Friday on HYPE TV UP & LIVE. The video was shot on location in the waterfront area of downtown Kingston and in Half-Way Tree and directed by Asha.

Buju Banton.

Citing health concerns, the attorney for reggae star Buju Banton wants his client moved out of the Pinellas County Jail where he has been since December.

David Markus, Banton's attorney, filed an emergency motion for bond with the federal courts on Monday afternoon.

The hearing is set for 10 a.m. this Friday.

The motion says Buju Banton, born Mark Myrie, has lost 40 pounds and not been provided with a diet in accordance with his religious view.

The 36-year-old, Jamaican-born singer is a Rastafarian, a religion that places importance on a vegetable and fruit based diet.

Last Thursday, Buju Banton was moved from jail's general population area to a higher security section-- a punishment for giving his food to another inmate.

Pinellas County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Tom Nestor said "The inmate handbook says you are not to be trading food or handing out food" as "Food is considered currency".

But since the move, Banton's "physical and mental health has been rapidly deteriorating," Markus said.

The Grammy-nominated reggae artist is charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine, accused of participating with two associates in a drug deal in early December to buy cocaine from undercover federal agents in Sarasota.

Banton did not seek a bond when he originally was incarcerated because of his immigration status.

He is in the United States on an entertainer's visa.

If he is awarded a bond, he will be immediately taken to an immigration detention facility.

The state's two immigration detention facilities are in South Florida at least four hours from Tampa.

U.S. marshals would have to transport Banton back and forth for hearings at Tampa's federal courthouse, Markus said.

Despite the distance, Banton and his attorney believe the move would be better for his health.

"We need him to be treated humanely," Markus said.

JAMAICA might seek the extradition of fugitive Harold Crooks, the former commandant of the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF), who is suspected to be holed up in Bermuda after fleeing the island to escape trial for alleged sexual molestation of an underaged girl.

Police yesterday refused to rule out making an extradition request or contacting Interpol to locate Crooks whose lawyer said he had fled Jamaica, claiming that he had no confidence in the justice system.

"We are very optimistic. We are going to make every effort to get him... even if it means extradition," head of the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA), Deputy Superintendent Herfa Beckford told the Observer.

Beckford said Crooks was not yet out of the woods, despite his departure from the island and that local cops would "pull out all the stops" to bring him before the courts.

Highly placed Observer sources said last night that Crooks is the holder of an American passport -- and therefore a US citizen -- which could complicate the matter, given that Jamaica is currently embroiled in an extradition dispute with the United States over Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, the Tivoli Gardens strongman who is wanted there on charges of alleged gun and drug trafficking.

The Jamaican Government says it is not handing over Coke because the US illegally intercepted his phone conversation as the basis for the evidence against him. The administration is demanding more evidence before signing the extradition treaty.

Jamaica has extradition treaties with the United States, Britain, Canada and other countries in the Caribbean Community (Caricom) region.

Police suspect that Crooks sneaked out of the island on March 17, a day before he was scheduled to be interrogated by investigators at CISOCA's Ruthven Road headquarters in Kingston.

He is suspected of first entering the US, before eventually moving on to Bermuda, the affluent British enclave 693 miles southeast of New York.

"We are making some inquiries and we are getting useful information as to his whereabouts," the source said.

On Tuesday, Crooks' attorney, Vincent Wellesley, said his client had protested his innocence, expressed his lack of faith in the island's justice system and vowed he would not return to Jamaica.

"He said he is an old man and that if he is convicted he will die in prison," the attorney said.

But executive director of Jamaicans for Justice, Carolyn Gomes said while Crooks might have a point about the shortcomings of the justice system, his decision to flee the country was wrong.

"Unfortunately, there may be some justification but it is not an adequate excuse for running away," Dr Gomes said.

Crooks is a former security advisor to the Government of Jamaica and has also worked with the United Nations and the Government of Belize.

He spent 22 years as a member of the Island Special Constabulary Force, an auxiliary of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

SINGJAY I-Octane, who recently severed ties with his management team, Arrows, has signed a deal with Khool International as his exclusive booking agency.

There had been previous announcements that the volume of the music was to be reduced in accordance with the police's instructions but when the sound started to go down for good at Saturday night's Stir It Up, there was no warning for the party people jamming to Louis Culture's 'Education'.

So while a few people started drifting away, most people continued dancing at the Louise Bennett Garden Theatre, Hope Road, St Andrew, catching what would be the last strains of music for the night, Terror Fabulous encouraging the ladies "when you lef a man you no tek him back".

extreme anger

Soon enough, though, there was nothing to dance to and it was a wrap for the night. While The STAR did not see exhibitions of extreme anger, there was general disgruntlement, one woman announcing "me did waan dance some more an go home go dagga!"

Up to the shutdown, Stir It Up had had its moments, but did not go over the top in the hour or so before the end. The party attracted sufficient persons to party on the flat area just inside the entrance, the slope around the selectors' booth and the stage which those playing the music overlooked. (And one selector instructed a willing young lady in wining to the beat he had on the CD player to the delight of the crowd.) However, it could not be called a bumper crowd.

music twists

Typically, the retro party worked its way to a hard grinding session to '90s dancehall songs which appeal to the ladies, the intensity of the climax depending on the pace of the progress to that point and unexpected music twists that delight. However, Saturday night's Stir It Up may have jumped the gun, Terror Fabulous' Position and theBackshot combination of Lady Saw and Spragga Benz hitting the audience at about 1 a.m. In addition there were points where the music was not thematically cohesive, so soon after the sexual energy of those songs came Capleton's Tour, then Beenie Man's Blessed and World Dance before a switch in beat to Electric Boogie.

The laid-back hip-hop of Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur delighted the audience and when the hands went up for all the currencies called for, from $100 down. The hip-hop remix of Spragga's No way and the Bounty Killer segment of It's Tha Party were embraced happily and, coming up to 1:30 a.m., Stir It Up had one of its better patches wit the Bug rhythm, leading into No Time to Gaze and *lo**stain.

"Big up all the girls with the tongue ring. Big up all the freaky ladies," the deejay said, the women leading the way in shouting "lick e back" along with Beenie Man.

The enthusiasm dipped a bit coming up to the end of the round, Number Two among the songs that were played. There was a change of disc jocks and pace, some ladies showing that they did not need a partner to enjoy slow jams like Guilty. The Independent women, real or imagined, proclaimed what they bought (real or imagined) and there were cheers when the beat changed with Admiral Bailey declaring himself God pickney.

But the end of Stir it Up was not far away.

DUBLIN, Ireland (AFP) An Irish bishop who was private secretary to three popes begged forgiveness from victims of child sex abuse in his diocese yesteray, as his resignation was accepted by the Vatican.

Bishop John Magee, who stepped aside a year ago pending an investigation into abuse claims, said he hoped that the probe's findings would help "towards healing for those who have been abused".

"As I depart, I want to offer once again my sincere apologies to any person who has been abused by any priest of the diocese of Cloyne during my time as bishop or at any time," he said in a statement.

"To those whom I have failed in any way, or through any omission of mine have made suffer, I beg forgiveness and pardon," added the 73-year-old bishop, whose diocese is in southern Ireland.

His comments came as the Vatican said the pope had accepted the resignation of Magee, who served as private secretary to three successive pontiffs -- Paul VI, John Paul I and John Paul II.

Magee reportedly found John Paul I's body in 1978, when he died after only some 30 days in office -- although it later emerged that a nun found the Holy Father dead, and Magee denied that he was the first to discover the corpse.

His resignation was accepted under a church law requiring the departure of a bishop who, due to "illness or some other grave reason, has become unsuited for the fulfilment of his office", said a Vatican statement.

Ireland, a predominantly Catholic country, has been rocked by two successive reports in the last year on child sex abuse stretching back decades, and on Church leaders' complicity in covering it up.

Magee's resignation follows that of Bishop Donal Murray of Limerick last December.

In earlier abuse scandals, Bishop Brendan Comiskey of Ferns in south-east Ireland quit in 2002, while the Irish government fell in 1994 amid a controversy over a paedophile Catholic priest, Brendan Smyth.

The Cloyne cleric said he tendered his resignation to Pope Benedict XVI on March 9 and was informed yesterday that it had been accepted -- shortly before the Vatican announced it in a statement.

"I welcome the fact that my offer of resignation has been accepted, and I thank the priests, religious and faithful of the diocese for their support... and assure them of a place in my prayers always," he added.

He noted that he had taken "full responsibility" in December 2008 for criticisms contained in a report by the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland.

Cardinal Sean Brady, Ireland's top Catholic churchman, thanked Magee for his "contribution to the work of the Irish Bishops Conference over the past 20 years, particularly in the area of liturgy.

"However, foremost in my thoughts in these days are those who have suffered abuse by clergy and those who feel angry and let down by the often inadequate response of leaders in the Church," he added.

Magee stood aside last March and the Vatican appointed another Irish cleric, Archbishop Dermot Clifford, to govern his diocese temporarily, while an official commission began investigating abuse claims.

The commission is still examining alleged abuse in the Cloyne diocese, according to its website. A spokeswoman said its findings should be finalised by the end of June, when they would be handed to the government.

Magee's resignation came four days after the pope issued a pastoral letter to Irish Catholics voicing "shame and remorse" over the paedophilia scandal and said bishops had made grave errors in their response to allegations.

Since the Irish cases emerged, abuse scandals have come to light in the pope's native Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

Lionel Messi earned a staggering £29.7million in the last year, replacing David Beckham as the world's highest-earning footballer.

A study by France Football magazine found that the England midfielder had finally been toppled after two years on the top spot, though he stays above Cristiano Ronaldo in second place.

The £200,000 a week after-tax deal that Ronaldo signed when he left Manchester United for Real Madrid makes him the biggest earner by football salary, but Messi's burgeoning commercial deals and a £3.6m bonus for winning six trophies with Barcelona put him out in front.

The 22-year-old signed a new contract at the Nou Camp before Christmas guaranteeing him take-home pay of at least £180,000 a week, but extras pushed his earnings to more than £570,000 a week last year.

United star Wayne Rooney (right), arguably the best player in the world today, does not reach the top 10, but his former team-mate Carlos Tevez makes No 7 on the list.

The Manchester City forward apparently earned £13.8m last year - £266,000 a week - while Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard was just behind on £12.8m.

Jose Mourinho is the highest earning coach, with the Inter Milan boss picking up £11.7m, while last year's No 1 Luiz Felipe Scolari fell to third with £8.5m after Chelsea finally stopped topping up his gold-plated contract with Uzbekistan side Bunyodkur.

Roberto Mancini jumped to second on £10.8m after taking the Manchester City job in December.

FORMER DIRTY FILM ACTRESS CLAIMS THAT SHE'S PREGNANT AND BROKE . . . . WANTS YOU TO SEND DONATIONS SO THAT SHE CAN GET HER BABY DIAPERS!!! (DO YOU FEEL SORRY FOR HER??)

1269349260mahlia.jpg

MediaTakeOut.com received the following letter from a friend of dirty film star MAHLIA . . . apparently shes fallen on hard times. Heres what she is saying:
Many days I sit and wonder at what point I lost control of my life and put it in the hands of porn valley agents. Many girls in porn come from backgrounds of drugged filled homes, have been beat or raped.

My story is a little different. Growing up my household at times was filled with domestic violence but my parents stayed together and it seemed to rarely effect my sister and I. I went to church weekly, involved in beauty pageants, Cheerleading, dance , girl scouts and had all the material things a young girl could ask for. That soon all changed when my mom decided to leave our dad and our household income changed for the worst. There was a time when we lived with different family members, would be low on food and even got kicked out of our apartment.

The winter of 2004 due to money issues we lost our condo and were forced to live in a house that was filled with drugs and crime. I was dating a great guy at the time and his house became my safe heaven but that relationship soon ended. My sister and I moved and I became a hooters girl but still wasnt making enough money for rent and school so I start stripping but only for a few weeks.

Looking in the news paper I saw an ad seeking swim suit models and I decided to go in for a test shoot and the next day the agent called and said he had a shoot for me which would pay $600 and all I had to do was go topless. So, I did. After that came solo work and eventually BG (boy-girl) scenes. I hated this guy and how dirty I felt when he touched me. He would book me at least once a week and I needed the money so I sucked my pride up and ignored the wrong I was doing. Needing more money to be on my own I posted photos on sexy jobs not knowing this would be the biggest mistake of my life.

The following morning my phone was blowing up with offers. I did my first scene not knowing anything and started flying across the map each week, booked everyday and made a nice sum of money. I soon started missing class, quit cheer and knowing that I hated what I was doing I kept shooting only looking at the money.

I would cry on the set and scrub my skin so hard after scenes because I felt dirty and just hated myself and how I was being treated. I couldnt sleep at night and began taking up to twenty pills a week! While in porn I had money stolen from me from the agent I had. I did scenes for cheap rates and was told that if I canceled a scene I would have to pay a kill fee so at times I was forced to do stuff I didnt want to do.

The first time I did a swallowing scene and facial I was forced. They waited to the very end to tell me. It was only my second time doing porn. My worst day was when I was forced to use a sponge to do a scene because it was already booked and my monthly came early I had never did anything like this. The sponge was pushed so far and got stuck that I had to be taken to the hospital I had caught a infection and they had to open me up to remove the sponge. I wasnt able to work for a few weeks and the agent stole two of my checks to replace the money he didnt get from me leaving me broke and without food. I was threatened by other girls that if I didnt do the parties the agent set up I would stopped being booked, and would have to find a place to live.

The worst mistake I made was allowing my 18 year old sister Raven Sky to get into porn. She started partying, hanging with the wrong people and did everything I stayed away from. She left porn when she became pregnant with her daughter who is truly a blessing and changed her life for the better. She did a few scenes but I am proud to say shes in college doing great and now porn/drug FREE!! I soon quit porn myself and should have stayed gone

I went back to school and tried to get control of my life again got back into cheerleading, dating a new guy but deep down was still depressed and needing money again. I turned to private dates because I thought it would be easier then porn but it was all wrong and dirty. I went back to porn and decided to get a female agent hoping things would be better because she said I would have more control over my career.

NONE of this happened and I was booked out, not sleeping, going to club events and my life was a mess again and sleeping pills ruled my life. I was a well known escort making good money but deep down it wasnt me. I didnt own my life anymore. Porn, money and sex did. VERY nasty and untrue rumors started to spread around about me around the same time I also found out I was pregnant and I do blame all the traveling, stress and crazy life style I was living for the loss of my baby. I slumped into an attitude and became very depressed but hid it with material things. I covered my swollen eyes from crying with makeup, smiling on the outside when I really wanted to just end my life.

I recently did my last scene and walked away from it all having nothing. I struggled for awhile with money, having a normal relationship and just finding myself again. Not only did I lose myself but I lost friends and family. I found out in the Spring that I was pregnant and from that moment on I knew I had to fight to keep my life safe from porn, escorting and sex.

My baby is due very soon and though I wont be able to give he/she right now or all the things a newborn needs he/she will have the love of a pure clean mom that he/she can be proud of and look up to. I wake up knowing that my life is changing for the better and although times are hard due to being on bed rest for a high risk pregnancy I have turned down all private work and offers for pregnant porn, I will never go back to that lifestyle.
Yes the money was great but it didnt make up for all the pain and trouble my body has went through. Ive decided that all any help and knowledge that I receive from the Pink Cross I will use it someday to help other girls who are also caught up in the porn life style and believe they cant survive without porn.

Thank you to Shelley and everyone at the Pink Cross who give girls like me hope and a new out look at life. Thank you to any of you who offer to help me and my baby.

Nyesha

Its a sad story, but the girl is still young and able bodied. We hate to sound cold *lo**ed, but she needs to get herself a DANG JOB!!!

No apology forthcoming for hurling insults

Sadeke Brooks, Staff Reporter

Despite hurling insults at many people in the entertainment industry on a video that surfaced on YouTube recently, Ricky Trooper said he was not drunk and will not apologise for his words.

The veteran selector ranted on two videos that were posted on OvaDiWallEnt's YouTube channel. Both videos were posted on the website on March 21, under the title 'Ricky Trooper Tells All'.

When contacted, Trooper said the videos were recorded mid-January while he was in Atlanta, celebrating his birthday. Although he was drinking liquor, he said he was not drunk but just felt like speaking his mind.

"I never drunk yet. Drunk is a person who is intoxicated and never know what he is saying. You can never use drunk as an excuse," he told THE STAR. "Mi a talk from mi heart. After being in the business for so much years, mi buss before Bounty, Beenie, Kartel and Mavado. So why me as a selector mi fi tek talk from a artiste?"

greatness

And, he really seemed to be speaking from his heart. In the first video, which is almost 10 minutes long, he begins, "mi nuh business wid people enuh, mi just waan know seh God love mi. Mi nuh fight bout greatness or dem ting deh. Mi play music fi di people. Mi nah tell no man seh mi a bad selector, mi do mi work inna this, mi a legend."

As he continued, he boasted that the only sound system to 'buss' since 2000 is Sound Trooper and he was responsible for that. In the process, he also lashed out at Sky Juice.

Throughout the expletive-filled videos he reinforced that he is not drunk, only 'nice'. "Wi have wi gun ...," he said waving what looked like a handgun and shouting in the camera.

When he spoke with THE STAR, Ricky Trooper explained that he was holding a replica gun which is actually a lighter.

As he speaks, he sips from his cup that was half-filled. Meanwhile, there are several men in the background laughing and making comments. At various intervals, he says, "put this pon YouTube, mek sure mi see it pon YouTube a morning."

box or plane seat?

However, he managed to show respect to Super Cat. "You a di only man ever bad me up. A you ask mi seh 'how yuh waan go back a Jamaica, inna box or plane seat?' and mi seh Super Cat, mi ago tek the plane seat," Ricky Trooper laughingly said.

In the other six-minute video, he also attacks Bounty Killer and Chin, of Irish and Chin fame.

Afterwards, he turns his attention to Busy Signal. "Wah happen to you Busy Signal? Yuh a sing bout Gary."

Despite the seemingly harsh comments, Ricky Trooper said he has no regard for anyone who might feel insulted.

"If me a talk pon YouTube and Killa offended, mi nuh business bout that. 'Cause a weh people a talk bout Bounty Killer in the streets mi a talk bout. I don't feel no way bout who waan offended 'cause dem nah put on my pot," he told THE STAR.

While he has issues with Busy Signal, Ricky Trooper said, "mi nuh have nutten 'gainst Mavado 'cause mi proud a Mavado. Him have a dream and him a live him dream."

MORE DRAMA!!! PEPA CLAIMS THAT HER EX-HUBBY . . . RAPPER TREACH . . . WHOOPED HER AZZ INSIDE ACTOR OMAR EPPS HOUSE!!! (DETAILS INSIDE)

1269349545treach_pepa.jpg

MediaTakeOut.com has been hearing reports for SOME TIME that rapper Treach used to BEAT ON his ex-wife Pepa (from Salt N Pepa). Well Pepa is now talking OPENLY (well, kinda openly) about one incident at actor Omar Epps house in Sister 2 Sister magazine:
One morning we were over at Omar Epps house, cause I was friends with his daughters mom, Kalima, too.

Treach and I wasnt doing so well. Then I went to California to try and just get away for a minute. Then he came to visit me, which I didnt think was a good idea cause I still needed some time to kinda decide what am I gonna do with this relationship.

He came in, and I guess I wasnt acting the way he wanted me to act; be all, like, jumping on him or say, Okay, were back together. I think he was upset about that.

Then that morning, he took the ring off and threw it at me and said, I want a divorce . . . That morning was real deep. A lot happened, but I dont want to put him out there again. It wasnt just saying I want a divorce, but at that point, I knew we needed a divorce.

Wow . . . that sounds like he laid hands on her. And she added that once, during a different violent episode, Treach burned her with a hot iron. Heres what she said:

Haitians arriving in Portland (Everard Owen)
There are doubts concerning how long the Jamaican government will be able to adequately provide for a group of more than 60 Haitians who landed on the country's shores on Tuesday.

Daryl Vaz, Information Minister, says the government has so far used some of the funds donated to the Haiti Relief Fund effort to provide immediate assistance to the group of refugees.

He is however expressing doubt about how long the funds will sustain the aid effort.

"Based on the fact that they are now here, we're looking at how to we're going to use those funds and how long those funds can sustain us without it being a burden of the Jamaican taxpayers. Jamaica at this time does not have the ability to sustain the Haitians here for any extended period of time," he said.

The Haitians who arrived by boat in Manchioneal and Fairy Hill in Portland Tuesday morning were assisted by residents, the Red Cross and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).

Security for J'cans & Haitians

In the meantime, Mr. Vaz has sought to reassure the nation that every precaution is being taken in regard to security to ensure the protection of the Haitians as well as the Jamaican people.

"Both the military and the police were on alert in terms of expecting them based on the fact that we don't know who these people are based on the aftermath of the earthquake and the fact that all the prisons were damaged. We have to be very careful that they are under the full control of the authorities here so that there is no chance for them to interfere with the Jamaican people if in fact they have criminal backgrounds," Mr. Vaz said.

He is to a press conference on Thursday to give the country a comprehensive update on the status of the Haitians.

ImageCommuters could hear Tuesday how much more they will have to pay for bus fares.

On Monday, Cabinet signed off on the new fare table for the state-run Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) and Mike Henry, Transport Minister says he might make an announcement Tuesday afternoon.

When contacted Monday night, Mr. Henry said he was contemplating whether to make the new fares public today but had not made a final decision on the matter.

Since last week, Cabinet has been mulling over a proposal to hike the cost of travelling on JUTC buses.

The Government has until next Thursday April 1 to implement the new fares.

The proposed increase forms part of the Stand-by Loan Agreement with the International Monetary Fund for the Government to drastically reduce its subsidy to the bus company.

Earlier this month, the Transport Minister dismissed reports that commuters will have to pay in excess of $100 to ride on JUTC buses.

Mr. Henry insisted that a final decision had not been made on the matter as the issue had not been discussed by Cabinet.

ImageThe worsening water shortage which is affecting the Corporate Area has disrupted operations at two more schools.

Grades one to five students at the Dunrobin Primary School in St. Andrew have been told not to report for classes on Wednesday.

On Monday, the school was also forced to send home students, except for those preparing for Thursday's Grade Six Achievement Test (G-SAT).

Principal Robert Gillies says classes have been suspended due to a lack of water.

Mr. Gillies says students should not report for classes until Monday as the school will be used as an exam centre for GSAT Thursday and Friday.

Meanwhile, Ardenne High School has also been forced to close its doors Wednesday due to lack of the commodity.

Clifton Ellis, Vice Principal of the Ardenne, has asked parents to keep all students at home.

In recent months administrators of schools across the Corporate Area have been grappling with the lack of water.

Due to the restrictions imposed by the National Water Commission, some institutions have either been forced to close their doors early or suspend classes.

ImageCommuters travelling in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region, KMTR, will have to fork out more to ride on a Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus.

The new fares which become effective April 1 will see regular commuters paying $80, up from the $50 they now pay.

For the concessionary groups, including the elderly, the disabled and school children, the fare moves to $20 up from $15.

Transport Minister Mike Henry who outlined the increase says it is based on a Cabinet decision.

Mr. Henry says because the competing bus operations within the KMTR are subject to sub-franchise licensing from the JUTC, the same regular adult fare will be applicable to all the non-JUTC services.

The average 46.7% JUTC fare increase is the first in five years and amounts to less than the aggregate 50 per cent increase which was granted to taxi operators over the last two years.

Mr. Henry said the latest increase represents the government's best effort to balance the need to recover the JUTC's operating costs and lower the level of public subsidy to the company.

100 new buses this fiscal year

Image
Mike Henry, Transport Minister.
In the meantime due to budgetary constraints, the government has opted to delay by a year, the acquisition of 100 of the 200 new buses which were earmarked for the JUTC this budget year.

The first 100 are scheduled to arrive in two batches beginning next month.

Three additional units to offer specialised services to members of the disabled community, will also be arriving in April.

Mr. Henry says the shortfall in new units projected for this year are to be augmented by the output from a successful ongoing internal bus rehabilitation programme and continued aggressive cost-cutting measures mandated by the JUTC Board and Management.

Moving ahead with cashless system

Additionally, he says the JUTC is focused on embracing a new cashless fare collection system as part of its drive to raise the standard of public transportation by offering more comfort, convenience and security to the commuters and operators.

Mr. Henry adds that in tandem with the internal bus rehabilitation programme, the acquisition of the new buses this year has opened up hundreds of job opportunities at the JUTC.

This, as additional operators are recruited and trained in preparation for the anticipated increase in bus roll-out.

New KMTR fracchise coming soon

And the general bus service within the KMTR is also expected to be better regulated shortly.

The JUTC has completed the process of filling the 164 slots for individual sub-franchise contractors to replace the former National Transport Co-operative Society sub-franchise licensees.

The new arrangements, which facilitate better monitoring and supervision of the contractors, are to come on stream shortly, according to Transport Minister Mike Henry.

He says as an introductory gesture, almost a half of the sub-franchise contractors - those who have acquired five-year licences - are set to benefit from an early introduction of their units to the Colour Coding Policy of the Transport Ministry, at minimal cost to the contractors.

ImageAs commuters absorb the news that they will have to dig deeper into their pockets to travel on Jamaica Urban Transit Company buses they could be hit with another hike in the cost of public transportation.

The Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO) which has been grumbling that the fare adjustment granted by the government last year has been eroded by inflation is signalling that it will be requesting another change to the fare table.

This was disclosed Tuesday night by Louis Barton, JATOO President.

Mr. Barton said it has not yet been decided when the request for new taxi fares will be made but he disclosed that it will be soon:

"Transport operators, even route taxi operators are feeling the crunch now and even though we're not going to get an increase come April 1, we are feeling the crunch and will ask for an increase very soon," he said.
The Bruce Golding led administration is yet to comment on reports that the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has taken an interest in the controversial contract involving the US law firm Manatt, Phelps and Phillips and Harold Brady.

RJR news has been reporting that the FBI is eyeing the case.

However, it is not known what triggered the query.

Mr. Brady who crafted the arrangement with Manatt, Phelps and Phillips has refused to disclose whether payments have been made to the law firm.

He cited client confidentiality for not disclosing any information about payments to the American firm.

However, RJR News has obtained a copy of the latest filings with the Department of Justice which indicate that almost US$50,000 has been paid to Manatt by Mr. Brady's firm.

In the filings, representatives of Manatt, Phelps and Phillips met on three occasions in October and November with State Department officials to discuss treaty issues.

Two toddlers died Tuesday afternoon in a fire which destroyed a house in the community of Western Park in Denbigh, Clarendon.

Three year old Dishane James and 5-year old Natania Smith were at home with their stepfather shortly before 5 o'clock when fire broke out inside the split level house.

The children's stepfather, who was downstairs sleeping, was awakened by screams but was unable to save the youngsters who were trapped upstairs.

Fire fighters were called to the scene but were unable to save Dishane and Natania.

Their charred remains were later removed from the gutted building.

COLOMBO, March 24, 2010 (AFP) -- Sri Lanka yesterday said it had refused US rap star Akon entry to the island following protests that a music video he produced was offensive to Buddhists.

Director General of Information Anusha Pelpita said Sri Lanka would not grant the US star a visa for next month's planned concert at a cricket ground in Colombo.

"The government has taken into consideration the sensibilities of the Buddhists who have been offended by one of his videos which showed scantily clad women dancing in front of a Buddha statue," Pelpita told AFP.

He said Colombo decided to stop the Grammy Award-nominated star's concert planned for April 24, despite hopes from the official Tourism Promotion Bureau that his visit would attract more holidaymakers to the island.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AFP) -- Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden's son issued a plea yesterday for some country to accept members of his family seeking to leave Iran, where they have been held under house arrest since 2001.

After two of Omar bin Laden's siblings were released by Tehran to Syria in the past three months, he and his wife Zaina issued a statement pleading for a refuge for their other family members still in Iran, mentioning specifically Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

"The Iranian government has nowhere to send Omar's other siblings," they wrote.

"We beg of any country to help us, either from the east or the western world. These are just as much innocent victims as anyone else," they said.

"We ask again for the UAE or Qatar to please help them."

The letter received by AFP named 23 people still living in the Tehran compound where the family has been held since fleeing overland from Afghanistan in 2001 ahead of the September 11 Al-Qaeda attacks on the United States.

The group includes Osama bin Laden's sons, their wives, and children born both in Afghanistan and later in Tehran.

Zaina, Omar's British wife, said that including others like in-laws the entire group numbers more than 30.

Two of the family have been allowed to leave Iran. On December 25, Bakr bin Laden, 16, Osama's youngest son, flew to Damascus where he was reunited with his Syrian mother Najwa al-Ghanem, one of Osama bin Laden's several wives.

On March 17 Bakr's sister Iman, who had been living in the Saudi embassy in Tehran for three months after sneaking away from the compound, also flew to Damascus.

She was escorted by Ghanem, who had been allowed to travel to Tehran to meet her. The mother and daughter had not seen each other for nine years.

Omar bin Laden says that, despite accusations from other family members and some Al-Qaeda statements, the family has been treated well in Iran.

In the guarded compound, "They were well treated, but had no communication with the outside world, other than a TV and occasional accompanied trips outside," the statement said.

He also says none of them have Qaeda sympathies.

"None of the siblings liked war or violence, all they ever wanted was a normal life with a normal family. They all wanted peace," the statement says.

It listed four sons of Osama bin Laden -- Osman,27; Saad, 30; Mohammed, 25; and Hamza, 19 -- and one daughter, Fatima, 24, as still in Tehran.

Ghanem is the mother of all the children except Hamza.

All are living in the Tehran compound with spouses and 12 children of their own, all under 11 years of age.

The statement said that Iran is willing to release them all if there is a place for them to go.

"Once we have any confirmation, the Iranians will put them on a flight. Najwa and her children will be together once again."

Asked last week whether the family could go live in Osama bin Laden's native Saudi Arabia, Zaina told AFP Riyadh that family members were not expecting to go to Saudi Arabia.

However, she said, Riyadh, which has extremely poor relations with Gulf rival Tehran, had been helpful in securing Iman's exit.

In the amateur video said to be shot in Atlanta, Georgia the popular selector who appeared somewhat intoxicated was seen waving a hand gun as he launched a barrage of insults at Alliance leader Bounty Killer, David Rodigan, Sky Juice, Irish and Chin promoter, Chin and even users on a popular entertainment website.

Trooper while paying homage to Gaza boss Vybz Kartel, popular jock Tony Matterhorn and Bounty Killer's mom Ms. Ivy, citing her as a genuine person ironically in the same breath  told Bounty to go and "s*ck his mada". He also chided event promoter Chin from Irish and Chin for his efforts in bringing effeminate actor 'Shebada' to the U.S. shores, a move that in many dancehall circles was seen as taboo.

As the camera rolls he talks about his journey with legendary sound system Kilimanjaro, his run-in with veteran deejay Super Cat before pouring his wrath on users of a popular entertainment website and veteran U.K based disc jock David Rodigan.

MOSCOW, Russia (AFP) -- Nearly 150 children in eastern Uzbekistan were infected with HIV in 2007-2008 through doctors' negligence, the Central Asian news website Ferghana.ru reported yesterday.

"Due to doctors' negligence 147 children in Namangan and Namangan region alone were infected with HIV, including 20 in regional hospitals," the website quoted a state television documentary as saying.

"By January 2009, when an investigation was complete and its findings made its way to court, 14 of those children were dead," the website said.

Twelve medical staff from Namangan and nine from regional hospitals were sentenced to five to eight years in jail over the issue, it said.

"The mass outbreak was due to using catheters and syringes many times without sterilisation, falsification of sterilisation notifications and destruction of proper documents," the report said.

Official statistics list nearly 13,000 HIV cases in Uzbekistan by 2009, Ferghana.ru noted, warning that AIDS could spread in the poverty-stricken Central Asian state.

LANCASTER, Massachusetts -- Maple syrup producers are under fire for tapping maple trees in Central Massachusetts cemeteries.

The Worcester Telegram reports last Monday that at least two cemeteries in Lancaster and one in Petersham have sap buckets on trees that stand along side rows of tombstones.

Athol Public Works Director Douglas Walsh said a recent investigation of tapped trees in Chestnut Hill Road Cemetery found that the culprits were neighbourhood kids.

In Lancaster's Old Settlers and Eastwood cemeteries, the Lancaster Cub Scout Pack 9 tapped trees as part of a project after receiving permission.

But Lancaster selectmen said they didn't know cemetery trees would be tapped and they received several calls about it.

Walsh said tapping trees along roads is normal, but in cemeteries it's "a little tacky".

Kirk Franklin performs at last Saturday's Fun In The Son at Jamaica College. - Winston Sill

During the final moments of last Saturday night's Fun in the Son concert at Jamaica College, when Grammy award-winning gospel superstar Kirk Franklin said, "Jamaica, I know you're crying about a high crime rate. I know you're crying about a poor economy. But guess what? In America, we got it too," he cemented the theme of the night - one of hope.

"Turn on all your phones, every one of you," Franklin instructed. "Turn the lights down and turn on all your phones. Look around you, there's still hope for Jamaica."

With that, more than 100,000 mobile phones were raised in the air. It was the kind of scene that had one in awe, made one reflect and one that was amazing and absolutely necessary.

As the vast crowd basked in the truth of his statement, Franklin seamlessly went into his contemporary hit LeanOn Me and prior to that Now Behold The LambWhy We SingSomething About The Name JesusSilver and Gold (I'd Rather Have Jesus), and Brighter Day. In a word, Franklin's 80-minute stint was 'amazing'.

The event was not only one of praise and deep worship, but had light, enjoyable moments as well. Prior to Franklin, Papa San had set the pace when he came to the stage. Papa San, known for his high-energy, fast rhyming and knee lifts, could do no wrong as he had the audience singing and air thumping with Love Inna Mi heartReal Real Real (Christ So Real To Me), and Let It Burn. He maintained the momentum with Hell Bruck Loose and then segued into Jesus I Love You and Smile Again.

The bar of the performances were kept on high throughout the night as most of the performances were moving, soul-stirring and praise-oriented, save for Carlene Davis who mixed both praise anthems and worship melodies to her set while Kevin Downswell continued it.

Sister Scully on the other hand kept her ministry 'back to basics', doing popular hits such as I Am DeliveredI Love That Man From GalileeWalk Those Streets of GloryWalk HolySuppose We Nuh MeetMove Mek Mi Pass and the hit Hurry Up.

Of the artistes whose ministries were praise-oriented, DJ Nicholas, Goddy Goddy, and Omari were outstanding.DJ Nicholas had the younger audience members captivated as he sang SufferingWise As A SerpentGod Man,Holy Ghost Gym and invited Judith Gayle onstage as they did ThingsAlready Better and Can't Stop It.

When introduced by emcee Nadine Blair as 'the comedian of Gospel', Goddy Goddy stuck to his moniker. Clad in camouflage wear, the minister came ready to war with the devil. "Gun man have bullet, Christian must have boom," he said before requesting for the energy drink of the same name for a shameless, but comedic, plug.

Other ministries came from Sons of the Prophet, J. Lee, Ryan Berry, Kimeika Isaacs, Jabez (in that particular order) and Andrew Palau, son of evangelist Luis Palau, delivered the sermon.

Western Bureau:

Dancehall music ruled supreme at the spacious Lux Ultra Lounge in Orlando, Florida, on Friday night as a jam-packed crowd rocked and grooved to a fantastic event, which saw female deejay sensation Spice stealing the show with a dazzling set laced with hardcore lyrics.

In what was a memorable show, even House of Leeds recording artistes Iyahblazze, the only roots/rock/reggae act in the line-up, was able to hold his own in a line-up which featured established stars such as Wayne Wonder, Serani, Tonto Metro and Devonte and special guest artiste Munga Honourable.

charismatic Spice

However, at the end of the night, the vast majority of the accolades fell at the feet of the charismatic Spice, who was both expressive and demonstrative as she added the most colour to the show, staged as a birthday celebration for popular Orlando promoter CC, the Reggae Ambassador.

Hitting centre stage minutes before 2 a.m. and cognisant that the show started late and had to end at 3 a.m., Spice hit the ground running as there was near pandemonium as her voice echoed, "me is gall weh nuh fight over man".

It was all excitement as both Spice's sparkling black-and-silver outfit and her lyrics in songs such as Virgin Story,DaggaSlim versus Fluffy and the controversial Rampin' Shop connected with the audience. The appreciative screams got louder as she added her seductive gyrating to the mix.

During Spice's musical onslaught, several female members of the audience joined her on stage, showing off their dancing skills. One lady created quite a stir, dancing on her head - go-go dance style, which elicited piercing screams as various parts of her anatomy got exposed under the glare of the stage lights.

The show, which started 20 minutes late, was opened by the dapper Iyahblazze, who caught immediate attention in his white outfit and matching turban, which was trimmed with red, green and gold. While he initially struggled, he soon settled down, making his US debut a pleasing one with songs such as No Heart Fe the PoorRasta fe Clean and Woman I.

After the rootsy-flavoured lyrics of Iyahblazze, rich dancehall music took over with singer Pressure bang on target. After opening with his popular hit, Love and Affection, he proceeded to stamp his class, generating much excitement with Never Give Up and Bless My Soul.

screams of delight

The dancehall duo of Tonto Metro and Devonte went full blast. The venue was soon rocking with screams of delight as they connected with, Fall in Love and Gal Se Whoa. Midway through their second song, singer Wayne Wonder joined them on the stage. He immediately sent the girls into a screaming frenzy as he reeled off a brilliant rendition of Searching, which he immediately followed up with Rainbow.

With the trio exciting the crowd, deejay Silver Cat joined the fray. He made an instant impact, rolling back the clock with his once popular song Two Fowl a me Yard. His energetic gyrating had the girls grabbing and pulling him.

Serani, who appeared as the penultimate act, was in a velvet-smooth mood and he not only sang beautifully but took time out to teach the crowd some of the latest dance moves from Jamaica. He was particularly sharp on songs such as Good Over EvilBad MindSkip to MalooDrive Out and his smash hit single No Game.

Serani made way for the final act, a fresh-sounding Munga Honourable. He could do no wrong as the crowd gave him much love. He was quite good, skilfully delivering songs like Bad from Me BornBust It and Faster. He closed the show in fine style with a thought-provoking rendition of Prayer.

A lawyer representing Harold Crooks the former Island Special Constabulary Force commandant who is being sought by the police for alleged sex-related offences -- says his client has rejected his persuasion to turn himself in to the police.

Crooks' attorney Vincent Wellesley, said despite attempts yesterday to persuade his client to surrender to the law, he remained resolute he would not hand himself over.

"He called me yesterday and I told him to turn himself in. He (however) said he does not intend to do so," said Wellesley, in a telephone interview with the Observer.

Police launched a manhunt for Crooks over the weekend after he failed on two occasions to turn up for an interview at the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) last week.

Deputy Superintendent Herfa Beckford, head of CISOCA, said attempts to find Crooks at his home had proven futile.

"He made arrangement to come with his lawyer on Monday. It was then changed to Thursday but he still has not made himself available," said Beckford. "But we hope he will hand over himself because anywhere in the world he is we are going to find him," she continued.

Yesterday, Wellesley could not say whether or not his client was in Jamaica, noting that Crooks called him from a private number and that he had no means of contacting him.

The lawyer, however, appealed to Crooks to report to the police. "He is presumed to be innocent; it is not in his best interest to run," Wellesley said.

THERMAL, California (AP) -- They say crime doesn't pay. For one robber in California, it did-but not much.

Authorities in Riverside County say a woman with a gun robbed 11 customers at a market and got away with $6.

A Sheriff's Department statement says the woman was armed with a semi-automatic pistol when she went to La Chicanita Market in the town of Thermal on Tuesday afternoon.

Deputy Herlinda Valenzuela says the woman confronted 10 customers in the store and also demanded money from one person who was entering the market. She then fled in an old car.

Nobody was hurt.

Oprah Winfrey has settled a defamation lawsuit filed by a headmistress she had accused of performing poorly at her South African girls school, where some students claimed they were abused, lawyers said Tuesday.

16-year-old charged in Wal-Mart bias incident

Washington Township police arrested a 16-year-old boy and charged him with ha****ment and bias intimidation for allegedly getting on an intercom at the Turnersville Wal-Mart and announcing that all African American customers should leave the store.

At a noon press conference today outside the Washington Township Police Department, Police Chief Rafael Muniz and Prosecutor Sean Dalton declined to identify the boy, but said he was from Atlantic County.

Authorities are trying to determine if another 16-year-old with him also was involved in the incident.

The boy was arrested Friday and remains in his parents' custody.

Last Sunday at around 7 p.m., someone at the Wal-Mart announced "Attention, Wal-Mart shoppers: Will all the black people please leave the store. Thank you."

Witnesses said store officials took about 5 minutes before announcing that the statement was a prank and apologizing.

Leaders of the Gloucester County NAACP said today that there have been similar, previous incidents at the same Wal-Mart.

In a statement on their website posted Friday, Wal-Mart said it was "appalled by this incident" and apologized to customers.

A Wal-Mart spokesperson did not return a call by deadline today.

The University of Ottawa cancelled a speech by U.S. firebrand conservative Ann Coulter late Tuesday, just moments before its scheduled start, because organizers feared protesters would turn violent.

As people were still making their way into the venue, the building had to be evacuated when a fire alarm was triggered.

The incident followed a Monday night lecture at the University of Western Ontario, where Coulter told a Muslim student to "take a camel" as an alternative to flying.

Coulter made the comment as she responded to a question from student Fatima Al-Dhaher, who asked about previous comments in which Coulter said Muslims shouldn't be allowed on airplanes and should take "flying carpets" instead. Al-Dhaher noted she did not own a flying carpet and asked what she should take as an alternative transportation.

Coulter did not deny making the flying carpet comment and replied to the university student, "What mode of transportation? Take a camel," to jeers and cheers. It was a decidedly pro-Coulter audience. One man, who identified himself as a U.S. citizen, described U.S. President Barack Obama as a "Marxist."

Some students, including Al-Dhaher, walked out after the camel comment.

Coulter said Tuesday that her comment about taking flying carpets was a joke that was made during an interview with The Guardian newspaper about racial profiling, and had been taken out of context.

"I can say it a lot quicker with a joke, and by the way, they wouldn't be bringing me in here for a speech if I never told a joke, if I never used satire," Coulter told CTV's Power Play Tuesday. "It's not so much a joke, it's satire because there's a political point behind my saying that they can take flying carpets."

Coulter did not elaborate on what her political point actually was.

She is well-known for her vehement views against Muslims. In a post-September 11 column, she wrote that the U.S. should invade Muslim countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity.

Al-Dhaher said she attended the lecture "with an open mind" and had not planned to ask a question. However, when Coulter began making remarks about homosexuals, African-Americans and Muslims, she felt the need to speak up, she said.

"I just thought that it was despicable and I thought that I should speak up against it," Al-Dhaher told CTV News Channel Tuesday afternoon. "So, I wrote on my phone because I was afraid I'd get nervous up there and forget my question."

Al-Dhaher said Coulter is entitled to her opinions but said the university could have chosen a right-wing speaker who is less inflammatory.

"I think that if the intention of the university is to bring two different speakers from two different political spectrums, I think that there are better choices from that camp that they could have chosen rather than Ann Coulter, because she is a bit vocal and she is a bit outrageous in some of the things that she says."

Coulter spoke in front of a packed audience of about 800 at the university.

Coulter to file human rights complaint

The cancellation of Coulter's lecture at the University of Ottawa came after she received an email about the limits of free speech in Canada from the school's provost.

The private email, which was leaked to conservative news organizations, noted that Canada's Charter of Rights meant that "promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges."

Francois Houle, vice-president academic and University of Ottawa provost, invited Coulter to educate herself on Canadian free speech laws.

"We, of course, are always delighted to welcome speakers on our campus and hope that they will contribute positively to the meaningful exchange of ideas that is the hallmark of a great university campus," wrote Houle.

The letter only added fuel to the fire of Coulter's speaking tour, which is titled, "Political Correctness, Media Bias and Freedom of Speech."

Coulter told Power Play that because she is from an identifiable group ("I'm a Christian, I'm a conservative, I'm a female"), she is the victim of a hate crime and will file a complaint with Canada's Human Rights Commission.

Wrong approach by U of Ottawa: MPs

Coulter, who often comments on Fox News, once said Canada is "lucky we allow them to exist on the same continent" after the Canadian government did not join the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Her tour was organized by International Free Press Society, a group whose website sets up Islam as the preeminent threat to democracy in the Western world.

"This jihad, like all jihads before it, will continue until a sharia-based caliphate rules the world, or until it is defeated," the society's policy statement says.

The group also sells one of the infamous Danish Mohammad cartoons, signed by cartoonist Kurt Westergaard, for $250. They are currently sold out.

Among the group's board of advisers are Canadian conservative bloggers Ezra Levant and Kathy Shaidle, author Mark Steyn and far-right Dutch political leader Geert Wilders.

Coulter reportedly commands a $10,000 speaking fee. Her fee is being covered in part by the Claire Boothe Luce Policy Institute, an American group that calls itself the "home of conservative women leaders."

Some critics say trying to quiet Coulter is the wrong approach to discrediting her views.

"In terms of putting limits on what she ... should say or shouldn't say, I'm not sure that helps," New Democrat MP Paul Dewar, told The Canadian Press. "It might add fuel to the fire that she will be probably starting tomorrow."

Liberal MP Scott Brison made a similar comment.

"If you don't agree with what she has to say, then ignore her," he said.

Coulter's Canadian tour wraps up at the University of Calgary on Thursday.

A Corporate Area woman who owns and operates two funeral homes has been accused of scamming over $20 million from unsuspecting persons while pretending to be a National Housing Trust (NHT) employee.

It is alleged that this took place while the woman was on bail for a similar offence. In that case, it is claimed that another set of persons were scammed of close to $1.5 million.

In 2008, the accused woman, Janise Webster, of a Lawrence Tavern, St Andrew, address, is alleged to have obtained some $1.5 million from unsuspecting complainants by false pretence. She was subsequently arrested and brought before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court for the crime, and was later granted bail.

NHT properties

New information which was yesterday read out in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court now states that while Webster was on bail for that offence, she allegedly collected close to $20.2 million from another group of people under the guise that they were getting deals on NHT properties.

Webster's lawyer, who filed an unsuccessful bail application for her client, yesterday told the judge that Webster was contacted by someone claiming to be a NHT representative, who communicated that she was able to sell houses and properties that the owners had defaulted on.

He said his client, as a result, made deposits on five such properties and shared the news with others, who decided to make deposits on other such deals.

The lawyer further told the court that some of the deposits from these persons were paid directly to the 'employee' while his client collected some. The 'employee' was subsequently arrested and charged, that attorney stated.

Resident Magistrate Georgianna Fraser, however, ordered that the accused woman be remanded until March 30, when the case will return to court.

With record numbers turning up at Fun In The Son on Saturday, promoter Tommy Cowan said the event was incident-free.

"Oh man, it was amazing. God is truly amazing. With that number of people, it ran smoothly without any incidents," Cowan said of the event that was held at Jamaica College on Old Hope Road in Kingston.

He said the police estimated that about 100, 000 people attended the event throughout the day.

While it was problem-free, head of the St Andrew Central police, Superintendent Derrick 'Cowboy' Knight confirmed that there were two reported cases of cars being stolen. He said the cars were parked on the road and not at the designated car parks, which should have been utilised for the event. After leaving the venue the car owners realised that the cars were not where they left it.

According to Cowan, parking was available at Mona Baptist Church, Hope United Church, Aralia Drive, UTech and Ministry of Agriculture.

carparks guarded

"I heard of someone losing a car on the road but all our car parks were guarded, secured and lit. We advertised them in the press Wednesday and Friday. We made sure all of that was taken care of. No cars were stolen from our car park," Cowan said.

"If somebody steals a car on the road, we can't be sure that person was coming to our event. We had great security."

Nonetheless, Cowan was overwhelmed by the number of people who were saved on the night. "Last year 450 people were saved and this year we had way more," he said.

And there were performances from artistes like Kirk Franklin, Papa San, Carlene Davis, Chevelle Franklin, DJ Nicholas and Omari.

GUNMEN PREY ON KIDS(STAR NEWS)

Gunmen are preying on students of a high school in Clarendon, THE STAR has learnt.

It is said that in recent weeks armed thugs have been relieving students of their valuables in a bushy area which is a short distance from the school.

The Clarendon police say they have heard of the situation and school officials are expected to submit a formal report.

Head of the Clarendon police, Superin-tendent Dathan Henry, said a report will be needed so the police can carry out their duty.

"We are yet to receive an official report ... We need school officials to communicate with us so we can look into the matter, and urge the kids not to go to the area while we maintain a presence there," Superintendent Henry said.

Efforts to speak with the school's principal were unsuccessful as she was said to be unavailable on several occasions.

However, one teacher, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the students have been told not to go to the area where the robberies are taking place but they still do so. The students reportedly claim that they go there to get transportation.

One police source said that in the latest robberies, last Thursday, at least 10 students were robbed of cellphones, cash and other valuables.

"Based on the arguments we are hearing, the students were approached by a group of gunmen who demanded their belongings ... About 10 students were robbed in that incident ... We have heard of a few incidents like that in recent times," the corporal told THE STAR.

That same day, in a similar incident, men armed with knives entered the campus of the Meadowbrook High School in St Andrew and tried to rob students.

One man was reportedly held.

The singles being promoted have also been getting considerable airplay on local radio stations and upon their return, the brothers plan to work on having their presence felt within the Jamaican market even more.

Their expansive audience knows the duo from their hit singles, Hustle Til The Day I Die, Money Print, Hustla for Life (La la la) among others. "It has been a great tour so far and we're ready to come back and start pushing the singles locally, then leave again and focus on other areas in the US," said Andrew *lo**.

adaptable blend

Andrew and Wada *lo**'s dynamic and adaptable blend of both hip-hop and dancehall rhythms provide them with and extensive appeal that they hope allows them the benefit of reaching heights of some of reggae's greatest performers.

However, the two aren't only interested in performing, they also love promoting.

"We have two events that we do every week. Dem mad. Good music and vibes and all the artistes usually come out and just hold a vibes and party, so that's also what we will be focusing on when we come back home," said Wada about the events 'Look Out Tuesdays' held at 'Di Spot' and 'Hype Fridays' staged at 'Di View' - both located on Eastwood Park Road.
