Jesse James Checks into Treatment Facility

Jesse James Checks into Treatment Facility

Jesse James

With his marriage to Sandra Bullock in crisis and his family's future on the line, Jesse James is seeking professional help, his rep tells PEOPLE exclusively.

"Jesse checked himself into a treatment facility to deal with personal issues," his rep said in a statement. "He realized that this time was crucial to help himself, help his family and help save his marriage."

While the rep did not specify the type of treatment facility, one source confirms he checked in on March 26, and that it was "100 percent his own idea" and not the result of an ultimatum from Bullock.

A cheating scandal that exploded on March 15 has sent James's nearly five-year marriage to Bullock, 45, into a tailspin with claims that he had affairs with at least four women. Bullock has moved out of the family home and is considering her options, another source says.

Before seeking treatment, James, 40, spent much of the last two weeks sticking to a routine, hanging out with his three kids and dropping them off at school and burying himself at work at West Coast Choppers in Long Beach, Calif.

WORLD-famous Jamaican tourist attraction Dunn's River Falls could be placed under private management, Prime Minister Bruce Golding announced.

The plan comes under the move to divest non-core assets held by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), which the Government is hoping, over time, to garner upwards of $3.3 billion for the State's coffers.

dunns_river_falls_w370.jpg

Golding made the announcement during yesterday's meeting of the Standing Finance Committee of Parliament, in response to questions raised by Dr Omar Davies, the Opposition spokesman on finance, about the divestment plans for UDC assets.

Dunn's River Falls, which is owned by the UDC, is run by the St Ann Development Company, a local auxiliary of the corporation. The attraction is one of the most outstanding in Ocho Rios, drawing thousands of tourists and locals yearly.

The prime minister made it clear, however, that while Dunn's River was included on the list for divestment, it was not the intention to sell.

"There are negotiations that are taking place now with regard to the management of Dunn's River and there is the possibility that the actual management of it could be privatised in a negotiation that would involve significant investment in new attractions, but the ownership of an asset like that will never leave the people of Jamaica," Golding told parliamentarians.

THE Tax Administration yesterday said that it is preparing 'Failure to File' notices to be mailed to more than 50,000 tax delinquents who will be given 14 days to respond or face prosecution.

"This measure is being taken by the tax authority to send a strong message to delinquent taxpayers that they have an obligation to file and pay their taxes on time," the Tax Administration said in a news release.

According to the tax authority, it had identified 11,242 organisations and 44,786 self-employed individuals who failed to file their income tax returns by the March 15 due date. As such, the agency has embarked on an aggressive compliance drive targeting the non-filers.

"The tough stance is being adopted following an intensive two-month public education campaign carried out by the Tax Administration in which taxpayers were reminded of their obligation to file their income tax annual and estimated returns for 2009 and 2010, respectively, and pay the taxes due by March 15," the authority said.

"During the lead up to the deadline, the administration also conducted an extensive islandwide Special Taxpayer Service Programme to assist small business operators to complete their tax returns," the authority added.

According to the authority, returns filed after the March 15 deadline will be classified as late, and payments due will be subject to 40 per cent interest per annum, calculated daily.

"Persons are therefore urged to file their outstanding returns without further delay," the authority said, adding that for returns which still remain outstanding at the end of the notice period, the administration will take one of two options:

* Use its automated system to generate estimated income tax assessments. Under the Income Tax Act, any assessment raised by the commissioner is subject to a maximum penalty of 300 per cent; or

* The administration may exercise its option to take persons to Court for failing to file their returns. Under the Income Tax Act a person can be fined up to $10,000 for each outstanding return or be imprisoned for up to a year.

The authority pointed out that Court action would not absolve the delinquent taxpayer of filing outstanding returns and paying outstanding amounts.

"These enforcement actions will not apply to persons who had made a written request and received permission from the commissioner, Inland Revenue Department to file their returns later than the March 15 due date," the tax authority said. "It must be noted, however, that in these cases the outstanding returns and relevant payments must be submitted by the date as indicated in the permission granted, otherwise the compliance actions will be applied."

PARIS, France (AFP) -- Burglars tunnelled into a Parisian bank vault and raided around 100 safety deposit boxes rented by private customers before making good their escape, investigators said yesterday.

Police said identifying and putting a value on what was missing would be a long and difficult task, and that the gang appeared to have been equipped with sophisticated tools for what was otherwise a very traditional robbery.

They bust into the Credit Lyonnais (LCL) branch on Avenue de l'Opera, between the Louvre and the old Opera house in the heart of tourist Paris, late Saturday night by passing through ventilation pipes and tunnelling in from a neighbouring cellar.

The branch itself was closed for renovations, but a security guard who heard noises from the basement was confronted by three individuals, who overpowered him, lashed him to a chair and ordered him not to move.

Meanwhile, the gang used drills to cut a hole in the thick wall of the vault just large enough for some of them to squeeze through and ransack the safety deposit boxes of 125 clients, LCL said.

The bank would not give a figure for the total number of boxes at the branch office.

Just after 7:00 am on Sunday, the guard, who could no longer hear drilling and could smell acrid smoke, raised the alarm. The gang had abandoned their tools and set fire to the premises to disguise any clues to their identity.

Witnesses said they saw four or five men leaving the area in a van, investigators told AFP.

The fire had set off the bank's automatic sprinkler system and police were unable to begin investigations in the flooded basement until Monday morning.

LCL confirmed there had been a robbery, but said the clients' boxes were operated confidentially and that it therefore had no idea how much money and what kind of valuables might have gone missing.

The bank said the guard was in good health but undergoing medical and psychological screening after his night-long ordeal.

The weekend raid bore strong similarities to a strike in September against another bank undergoing building work, this time in Seine Saint-Denis in the northern Paris suburbs, in which 117 safe deposit boxes were emptied.

Portmore Empire first lieutenant Popcaan is widely regarded as the next big artiste to emerge out of the hit-making Portmore Empire camp. He already has a rabid following in the second city of Montego Bay, and the pitched-up intensity of his rhymes has already secured a full-*lo**ed underground following in his native Greater Portmore. It is only a matter of time before that support tips and translates into mainstream success.

And that moment may already be here as his combination song, Clarks, alongside Vybz Kartel and Gaza Slim, hit #10 on the ER top ten charts this week.

"Mi love how the single ah shot dawdie, and yu fi see the video, it sickkkkk, dawdie," Popcaan told one876entertainment.com

ImageWord in the streets is that Popcaan has been voted the artiste most likely to carry the banner for the next generation of young artistes emerging out of the Vybz Kartel-led Gaza camp.

"The people dem a say it, mi just de ya ready fi put in the work," he said.

Boisterous and fun-loving, Papi, as he is called by friends, found a commercially viable hit, Nuh Ordinary Girl in late 2009, and since that time, the single has been blowing up all over FM radio. The song, which appears on the popular England Town riddim, is still a big fave among females. He also has a controversial single called Sell We Out which labels departing ex-Empire member Blak Ryno a traitor. The barked threats and searing hook of that song shows the urgency of Popcaan as he sharpens the force of his anger against a former friend.

"The fans dem can look out for great things from Popcaan this year, the Empire goes on and on and on."

Dancehall artiste Blak Ryno is certainly moving on since leaving the Portmore Empire, as he has changed his name, done a music video and collaborated with Kym, formerly Gaza Kim.

On Friday, Blak Ryno, via a statement issued by Shuzzr Entertainment, said he has changed his name to Ryno Di Stinger. In addition, he will be forming ties with a group called Garrison, which comprises producer Super Blunt and Kaliba.

Along with former Portmore Empire member Kym, he recently did a song called Last Night on the 'Summer Swing' rhythm, which is their first collaboration. The track, which has an R&B flavour, speaks of a relationship gone sour between a man and a woman.

Ryno has also done a music video for Mi Lef. In the low-budget video, there is a character who resembles Portmore Empire boss Vybz Kartel. For most of the video, he sings in front of the camera, flipping his phone at intervals. There are also many clips with persons holding several copies of THE STAR, which had articles about Ryno leaving the Portmore Empire and the incidents that followed.

REPORT: WILL SMITH IS CAUSING PROBLEMS ON THE SET OF JADA PINKETT'S NEW SHOW!!!

1269866597will_jada.jpg
MediaTakeOut.com just learned of a rumor that actor Will Smith is causing problems on the set of his wife Jadas new TV show Hawthorne. According to the reports, Will is causing production ddelaysbecause hes constantly offering his insight into how to make the show BETTER.

Heres what our pals over at the NY Daily News are saying:
"He is not currently shooting a movie, so he's been a constant on the set in recent weeks," the network source says. "He's been inserting his input and requesting so many changes to the script that it pushed back the production schedule tremendously and caused everything to spiral out of control."

Pinkett Smith plays a nurse on the hit show, which premiered last year to stellar ratings. But despite the first season's success, our insider says her husband wants the dramatic scenes pushed to the limit - and he apparently submits pages of notes and rewrite requests to the show's writers and producers each week.

Ummmm . . . shouldn't they be HAPPY that Will is offering his input . ..

NNPA columnist Julianne Malveaux doesn't begrudge comedienne, talk show host and actress Mo'Nique's victory at the 82nd Oscars this month.  But Mo'Nique and other African-American women's characters in films rile her. She writes in her current column that "Mo'Nique's victory is her laudable personal success, but a Black community setback."

The 44-year-old Mo'Nique grabbed the Best Supporting Actress Award, for her portrayal of Mary Jones whom Malveaux describes as "a revolting and depraved mother" in the movie "Precious."

"She took the material she was given and she worked it," Malveaux writes.  "She made Mary Jones a repulsive character with absolutely no redeeming social value.  I am simply frustrated that these are the only kinds of roles that Hollywood offers African-American women, the only kinds of roles that Oscar chooses to lift up. I am frustrated that some may consider Mary Jones' bestiality as typical, not atypical of African-American women."

Malveaux ticks off the negative roles other African-American women Oscar winners played to support her concern: Hattie McDaniel won for a role as a maid; Halle Berry played a sex-starved fool; Whoopi Goldberg played a medium in "Ghost" and Jennifer Hudson was cast as an angry singer.

"I would love to see someone green light the story of Madame C.J. Walker, our nations first Black woman millionaire," she writes. "There is some glamour there, and some drama!

"In a contemporary context, why not tell the story of Cathy Liggins Hughes, the millionaire owner of Radio One who slept in her studio because she couldn't afford rent and the cost of station operations. These are dramatic stories, but they fly in the face of the stereotypes that were replete in 'Precious.'"

But Malveaux is hardly the only one angry about the roles, which have won Oscars for African- American women. "I don't think it was a movie that needed to be made," said 24-year-old Destiny Graham, a cashier at a DC-area Giant Food Store. "It made Black people look worse than we are depicted in the media and I refuse to support that."

Nicole Brown, 36, is equally disturbed that African-American women win an Oscar, one of the most coveted awards in Hollywood, only when cast in demeaning roles.

"Every role that past Black Oscar winners and now Mo'Nique have won make Black women look weak or angry; it's never a part that you are proud of," said Brown a homemaker and mother of four.

Donald Bogle, film historian and author of six books concerning African-Americans in film and on television is equally unhappy with the demeaning roles Black women play in films. "I still feel conflicted about the roles African-American actors and actresses play in the movies," said Bogle, whose books include the 1973 "Toms, Coons, Mulattoes Mammies, & Bucks."

While Malveaux is glad for Mo'Nique's victory, she said she "did not relish the "Precious" story of welfare pathology making it to the screen. "Why not more positive roles for African-American women?" she asks.

( L - R ) Konshens, Nitty Kutchie - File

Plans are well under way for the official launch of Flava Squad Entertainment's HYPE 2K10 event to be held on the grounds of their office situated at 50 Dumbarton Avenue in St. Andrew.

The launch, set for this evening at 7 :00, promises to be nothing short of exciting as patrons will get an opportunity to mingle with several headliners including veterans Nitty Kutchie, Lukie D, Mad Cobra, the very controversial Lisa Hyper, Assassin, Konshens and new sensations Chedda and Khago, among others.

Hosting duties will be handled by ZJ Elektra from Zip FM.

HYPE 2K10 at Independence Park, Black River, St Elizabeth, set against the background of a day-and-night affair, will on April 3, unveil a family fun day and stage show with a host of activities for the children such as bounce-a-bout, go-carts, Ferris wheel and a mechanical bull. Other attractions include car stereo clashes, singing, deejaying and dance competitions. Added entertainment will be provided by Black Roze sound system and the Diamond Squad dancers.

misunderstanding

Later in the evening there will be a stage show featuring a stellar line-up, headlined by some of the biggest names in music including Vybz Kartel, Assassin, Lady Saw, Konshens, Khago, Delly Ranx, Nitty Kutchie, Lisa Hyper, Rastafarian and cultural singers Sizzla Kalonji, Jah Cure, I-Octane, Vybrant and Determine. Other acts include Pamputtae, Ishawna, New Kidz, Richie Innocent, Chedda, Don Sniper, Ras Oneily, Killer Don, Brimstone, Timmi Burrell, Sheriff, Delus and veteran deejay Peter Metro.

In an effort to clear a misunderstanding that deejay Busy Signal had been booked for the show, the management of Flava Squad Entertainment recently met with manager Shane Brown to iron out the issue.

"It was just a misprint of some old information regurgitated by the media from a previous staging when Busy Signal was a part of the line-up. I want to use this opportunity to make it clear to the public that he (Busy Signal) is not booked for the 2010 staging," explained Dave 'Tall Man' Scott, managing director.

Some artiste managers are upset that deejay Capleton made a statement during his performance at Fantan Mojah's annual stage show, Reggae in the Valley which seemed to disrespect young artistes who he felt should have worked in the midnight slot and certainly not after 4 a.m.

"Mi feel like him ah disrespect the young artistes dem inna the business and nuff ah dem ah do well and ah hold dem own," one artiste manager said.

However, Capleton, defended himself during Ron Muschette's programme on IRIE this morning saying that he was not disrespecting young artistes, but then again, he did not want them to sabotage his own performance.

"Mi no waan work when sunlight because mi ah the fireman, mi need fi see mi torches dem," he told Muschette. "Mi respect and love every young artiste."

Standout acts during the Reggae in the Valley show were Singa J who got a major ovation for songs such as New Year's Day, and actually earned a much-deserved encore. The crowd also thoroughly enjoyed the performances of Richie Stephens, Coco Tea and Fantan Mojah. Ras Oneilly also performed well.

"We got a good-sized crowd but we never really made any money this year, but I am happy, it was a good show, incident-free and the people enjoyed themselves, mi haffi say Singa J tek the show, and Capleton really performed well too. Next year will be bigger and better," Fantan Mojah said, yesterday.

Blak Ryno

Portmore Empire head Vybz Kartel has described his former protégé, Blak Ryno, as a confused individual after his recent departure from the crew.

Speaking to THE WEEKEND STAR yesterday, Kartel discussed his reaction to Ryno's abrupt departure from the Portmore Empire on Wednesday, of which he has been a member since January 2007.

priorities mixed

Kartel said: "Ryno is, in my analysis, a confused individual going through some sort of post-adolescence trauma, where in his pursuit to find himself is getting his priorities mixed up and as a result, is making decisions in a subconscious, bewildered state of mind."

The deejay further said that: "Portmore Empire and Gaza will continue to grow from strength to strength merely because I am Gaza."

According to Kartel, persons can look out for his newest member Gaza Slim and his protégé Popcaan.

The Portmore Empire started in 2007 after Kartel's departure from the Alliance in 2006. The Empire have consisted of members such as Popcaan, Singa Blinga, Dosa Medicine, Lisa Hype, Shawn Storm, Gaza Indu, Sheba, Jah Vinci among others.

Blak Ryno was an original member of the Portmore Empire and was seemingly one of the closest to Kartel, often citing him as a major influence and called him 'daddy' on numerous occasions.

Ryno is the third deejay to have departed the Empire recently, the first being Lisa Hype, now called Lisa Hyper. Hyper was dismissed from the Empire late last year shortly after a compromising picture of the deejay began circulating on the Internet.

In January newcomer to the Empire, Gaza Kim - now known as Kym, willingly left the Empire after an incident which took place in the 'Big Yard' community off Mannings Hill Road. Kym was severely beaten on what sources say were orders by Kartel. Kartel later denied any involvement.

EXPLOSIVE: HOWARD STERN IMPLIES THAT JAMIE FOX IS GAY!!!

1269955387jamie_gay.jpg
MediaTakeOut.com has an EXPLOSIVE piece of news. Over the weekend, we told you that Jamie Foxx and his co-hosts at Sirius Radio show were GOING HARD at Howard Stern and Robin Quivers.

Well now Howard is going Hard back. And, Howard Stern seems to suggest that Jamie Foxx is gay. Howard started off his rant by saying:
"I know sh*t about Jamie that maybe won't be so comfortable for him. [I know] a lot of weird sh*t about him"

And while he didn't get specific about what "weird sh*t" he know about Jamie, he gave the following hint:
"I got a %&%*load of stuff on Jamie that's not a lot of fun. And . . . you know the name Jamie Foxx - it's interesting that he chose the name Jamie. I can go into the whole f*cking deal"

For those of you who don't know Jamie Foxx' Government name is Eric Marlon Bishop, he chose to use the name "Jamie" when he arrived in Hollywood. OK . . . now back to Howard, he wasn't done:
"He wants to get some attention for his show on the channel the FOX HOLE . . .that's an interesting name too . . the hole. I wonder which HOLE they're referring to. How many holes are in Jamie. He's got an as* and he's got a mouth, and I don't know what he does with them."

WOOOOOOW!!! Howard . . . what do you know about dude . . . you need to CLARIFY this one . . .

Then Howard ended it off with a challenge - he told Jamie to go on his show and TALK MESS to his face. Howard claims that if he DARES to do that, Howard will EXPOSE WHAT HE KNOWS about Jamie on the air.

My girl lollipop! - winston sill photos

A two-segment fashion show sponsored by Cooyah and a dismal 20-minute music selection from DJ Bambino had almost spoiled an evening of excitement when the 'Rebirth' of Eclipse Pool Party took place last Saturday night at Rockfort Mineral Bath in east Kingston.

DJ Nico gave the early patrons a special musical treat, finishing off his set with some of the older dance songs such as Elephant Man's Pon Di RiverHigher Level and QQ's Rum Ram.

Around 2:30 a.m. Rohan Gunter, former Comedy Buss winner and promoter, got his party under way and it endured only two dull moments. First, was a rather confused set by Bambino, who went from hip hop to reggae, dancehall and then rock in the space of 20 minutes, but more important, he lacked precision.

DJ Nico was going very well and had the crowd buzzing to the sultry sound of Nadine Sutherland on I Will Do Anything. However, Nico's set came to an end and the first segment of the Cooyah fashion show began.

It would have been great if the organisers had merged both segments, as the second was drawn-out and dull as most of the models wore the same outfits they did in the first segment.

ZJ Ice introduced himself with a string of 'money anthem' songs, with Rick Ross' Hustlin' receiving the most favourable response. Just minutes later, ZJ Ice made the women lose their composure with a string of Vybz Kartel songs, such as Dandy Shandy and Get Wild.

Ice even teased the women further when he played Pamputae's Good Good and Lady Saw's Backshot. But he made a hurried exit leaving the patrons wanting more. Cash Flow's DJ Neil was called to duty right after the final fashion segment, and he brought a new energy to the party, only for Arif Cooper to close off brilliantly.

Cooper got major forwards throughout his set, especially when he played the much-anticipated Come Into My Room, featuring Mavado and Stacious.

The Barbie movement of Nicki Minaj has been getting some opposition from other female rappers. The First to attack was Lil Mama. She voiced her concern about Minajs image and that she intends to lead her fans in the opposite direction. Now Chicago MC Kid Sister is gunning at Nicki Minaj.

I think Nicki Minaj is awesome. She has a cute little look but my thing is do people take her seriously? Kid Sister asked during an interview with Honey Magazine. Im not being funny. Im just asking a question. That whole thing like I want more cheese, lots and lots of cheese, do people make fun of her?

ON BLAST!!! NEW BOOK USES THE N WORD TO DESCRIBE TIGER WOODS AND P DIDDY!!!

1269952338niggardly.jpg

WOWZERS!!! MediaTakeOut.com just learned that a new book, by Pulitzer prize winning author Karen Hunter is using the N WORD to describe P Diddy and Tiger Woods' behavior. Here is a quote from the book:
Thats niggardly! Hip hop stars see millions go through their hands and they waste it on yachts, parties and one even bought a $300,000 Maybach for his sons birthday...and the kid didn't even have a license. Niggardly! A third of NBA players are bankrupt three years after leaving the league. Antoine Walker, how do you blow a $100 million? Niggardly!

Tiger Woods wants to be anything but black and thats fine with me. I don't want to claim him. But his behavior with disrespecting his home, his wife and his children has certainly been niggardly! What message is P. Diddy sending to these youth he inspires with having all of these babies out of wedlock? What message is he sending to his kids about their mothers? Niggardly.

The author defines "niggardly" as "stingy, selfish, and not generous (not just with money, but spirit, knowledge and time)." Ouch!!

Deejay Vybz Kartel is planning to build a library in the Big Yard community, located off Mannings Hill Road.

The library will be called the 'Adidja Palmer Library and Net Café' and will hopefully be opened by mid-April. When THE STAR spoke with the artiste yesterday, he explained that he has already bought a 20-foot container which is being formatted to accommodate six computers and books, including encyclopaedias.

He said, "I spoke to a high-ranking officer from Constant Spring Police Station, a Mr Wray Palmer, who gave me the idea. He said instead of giving money to the residents which is like a hand-to-mouth kinda thing, why not build something that the community at large can benefit from forever, like a library. That's where I got the idea."

According to the deejay, he is in the process of seeking formal permission from city officials to open the library but has complete confidence that he will not encounter any problems in doing so.

prominent high schools

He said he has also spoken to the residents of the community who are supportive of the idea. "We have teachers of prominent high schools who reside in the community who are more than willing to take on the task of monitoring and operating the library. We will also be asking private-sector members in the area to foot the monthly bill."

Kartel told THE STAR that he plans to buy some of the books needed for the library but he is also asking persons to sponsor or send any available books that could be used. "I need sponsors for books and I need an air-conditioning unit for the library as well. So any interested person can send the books, care of my publicist Claude Mills, to 14 Kirk Avenue, Havendale," he said.

As to why the library will be established in Big Yard and not in his home community of Waterford, Portmore, Kartel said, "Waterford is a community that has benefited from my generosity in the past and will continue to reap from 'Di Teacha' whether by donations to my alma mata, Waterford Primary, or by introducing new talent to the music world. But as a resident of Kingston 8 and a well-loved personality by Big Yard, this community is more needy of the project. Waterford Primary and High School have libraries, plus a community library."

Kartel and the Big Yard community have been linked for some time now, with the deejay supposedly being held responsible for some negative incidences that have taken place there. However, he says this is not an attempt to clean up his image or a publicity stunt.

"Well, it wasn't something I was gonna do if I wasn't given the idea. Mr Palmer sat me down and talked to me, he was basically saying 'do good' and I took his advice. Kartel will be Kartel. It is Adidja Palmer who is doing this," he said.

Why Mavado and Vybz Kartel might be the Biggie and Tupac of Dancehall....by mafia 7 I traversed four Caribbean islands in the past two months and spied one common denominator: graffiti. Scrawled precipitously on a cliff suspended above the lush mountains of Saint Lucia, on the aluminum siding of a rum shop in French Saint Martin, on the concrete walls of a Trinidad office park, on accessible surfaces covering urban and rural landscapes across Jamaica, one of two words made its inevitable appearance: Gully or Gaza. No island-hopping tagger is responsibleblame Jamaican musics latest, scariest personal feud. Gaza refers to a swath of the working-class town of Portmore, home of Vybz Kartel, the man voted, in a recent poll, the islands most popular dancehall artist. Gully is for the Kingston neighborhood (a line of shacks, really, along a stretch of gully known as Cassava Piece) where fellow dancehall star Mavado was born. Initially, the two were musical teammates, protégés of the artist Bounty Killer, but since 2006, theyve engaged in near-constant lyrical warfare. In track after X-rated track, Kartel has called Mavado a pseudo-gangsta, dubbing him Mafraudo and claiming to have had sex with his mother. Mavado retorted that Kartel was, among many other things, a *****man (a gay slur, in a country that takes such accusations very seriously), a skin-bleacher, and an atheist. The feud came to a head at a major stage show in late 2008, when the two stood face to face before a rowdy crowdKartel decked out in full army gear, Mavado sporting a Lone Rangerstyle black maskand engaged in a heated clash, hurling insults at each other as Kartel carted out a coffin with R.I.P. Mavado printed on it. Soon thereafter, Mavado abruptly marched offstage. After this showat which fights were said to have broken out between fans, who still argue passionately about whether Mavado or Kartel was the victorthe feud intensified to the point where much of the dancehall community, along with legions of fans, were compelled to decide: Are you with Gaza or Gully? In the Jamaica Gleaner, critic Ian Boyne lamented the fact that entire dance sessions and even neighborhoods were dangerously divided: If your car is even passing one of these sessions, and you dont happen to know whether it is Gaza or Gully territory, he wrote, you are in danger. You dont even have the right to play the opposing gangster in your own car or SUV. What a life! Even the fastest man on earth took sides: At Usain Bolts post-Olympic welcome-home party, the gold medalist allegedly marched into the DJ booth and decreed that only Gaza tunes should be played at his parties. And anybody nuh like dat, he supposedly declared, can jump inna gully. The feud generated such attention that in December 2009a year cursed by Jamaicas highest-ever murder ratethe countrys two most-high-profile men intervened. Prime Minister Bruce Golding, who previously called the Gaza-Gully conflict one example of the negative influences that destabilize us as a people, requested a meeting with the two artists. Before and after the powwow, which involved four government ministers and a bishop, Mavado and Kartel strutted through the prime ministers office providing myriad photo ops: shaking hands, laughing like old pals, and modeling shimmering jewels and designer shades. The real peace decree, though, came just before the meeting, when the two DJs took the stage together at a Kingston concert and Kartel called Mavado my brother. The performance was, by all reliable accounts, coordinated by so-called community leader Christopher Coke, a/k/a Dudus: current target of a U.S. extradition request on drug- and weapons-trafficking charges and the son of gangster icon Jim Brown, who was the founder of the legendary Shower Posse gang that ran much of Jamaica, New York, and Miami in the 80s. It has all the makings of a straight-to-DVD classic: one prime minister, one alleged don, two gangsta dancehall artists, and a soundtrack of scathingly good diss tracks. In Jamaica, the same boundless, indigenous creativity that has produced a wealth of classic music and art has also produced, well, creative tactics both political and criminal. Gaza vs. Gully was thus perceived as supercharged hip-hop beef, pumped up by dint of arising in a country defined, for decades, by dire gang conflict and some of the highest murder rates in the world. But which has generated more undeserved hype: the angst provoked by the Gaza-Gully conflict, or the high hopes pinned to this official, uneasy truce? I flew to Kingston to find out. There, in a small bar called Medusas, I ran into Reneto Adams, retired senior superintendent of the Jamaican police force and a man with quite a reputation: In 2004, he stood trial for the murder of four civilians; before his acquittal, he recorded a dancehall track entitled To Protect and Serve, which named the so-called bad men hed be coming for next. Gaza vs. Gully is an extension of the gangs and criminal activity we have in Jamaica, Adams told me, setting down his Red Bull. The feud stands out from the many beefs in Jamaican musical history, he continuedciting Derrick Morgan vs. Prince Buster in the 60s, and Beenie Man vs. Bounty Killer in the 90sbecause earlier feuds did not incorporate violence. Furthermore, this one is also political: Gaza is predominantly PNP, and Gully is predominantly JLP. Its an unsubstantiated and boldly controversial claim. It is common knowledge that the Peoples National Party and the Jamaica Labour Party extend beyond politics; armed gangs in Jamaica, like all of Kingstons garrison neighborhoods, have, since the 70s, been aligned with one of the two. Adamss theorywhich Id never heard or read before, and did not seem out of the realm of possibility, though Mavado later denied itis thus a chilling one. Will the truce last? No, not in Jamaica, replied Adams, reaching for his Red Bull again. Like the gangs in this country, who they didnt kill in seven months they kill in seven days. The feud has never stopped generating anxious anecdotes: allegations that the Gaza-Gully divide was inciting violence inside Jamaicas brutally overcrowded prisons, that musical selectors had been roughed up by supporters of Kartel over their Gully-centric sets, that tourists had been attacked because they played Mavado in their car outside a Gaza event. In late 2009, pre-truce, the police seized R-rated Gaza-Gully buttons sold by vendors outside several schoolsthe pins featured explicit, Photoshopped graphics of one artist holding anothers severed head, blasting off AKs, and so onwherein the public focus turned to corruptible children. Usually, there are conflicts in dancehall, but this one got out of hand, Esther Tyson, Vice-President of the Jamaica Association of Principals of Secondary Schools, told me. The last straw was when students at the Kingston school where she serves as principal were asked to come up with presentation topics for Jamaicas National Heroes Day celebration and suggested Gaza vs. Gully. Id heard the rumors and read the tabloid accounts, but I hadnt met anyone whod beenor even knew anyone whod beeninvolved in actual physical confrontations stemming from the feud. The many children with whom I chatted, who hailed from all across Jamaicas wide class divide, made their musical preferences known, but declared theyd never fight over music. In fact, Tyson herself had originally said she could put me in touch with several principals whose schools had been violently affected, then later reneged, saying those asked felt they couldnt really speak on the matter. Skeptical, I asked whether she or her colleagues bore witness to actual feud-related violence. I dont know of any personally, but we heard about it, she replied. Because of the truce called, however, there seems to be a diminishing of the impact. Will it last? I hope so. She sighed audibly. But, probably, something else will come. Back in New York City, Manhattan is Switzerlandhome to far fewer West Indians than Brooklyn, Queens, or the Bronx, and thus capable of remaining neutral amid the Caribbean-related drama often present in the outer boroughs. So on Friday night at Club Element, the cavernous Lower East Side club that hosts a popular weekly Caribbean party, the mood is light. Mavado and Kartel tunes are spun in equal measure, while frequent soca interludes keep the peace; waist-wining and dancehall-feuding, after all, dont mix. Gaza vs. Gully troubles feel, appropriately, thousands of miles away. Theyre not, though, asserts Jermaine Magras, whose company, Upscale Crowd Entertainment, runs the Element party, along with other reggae and soca events throughout the city. Club DJs here have to be careful not to spin too much Mavado or Kartel, or else theyll be branded as either Gully or Gaza. Once theyre branded, theyll have problems. With what? Getting what they need from Jamaican artistsdubplates, for instance, he replies, referring to the personalized versions of tunes that are the caviar of a good reggae selectors set. Anywhere you have a Caribbean community, youre going to see the impact of the Gaza-Gully conflict, confirms veteran WBLS radio host Dahved Levy. Sure enough, put your ear to the streets and familiar anxious anecdotes emerge: rumors about an area in Brooklyn near the 5 train lately dubbed Gully, about schoolchildren fighting over allegiances, about clubs in Brooklyn and Queens where tensions have arisen. New Yorkers with friends and family in Jamaicaand thats obviously a lot of peopleare going to be directly affected by the feud, explains Bobby Clarke, CEO of Irie Jam Media, which produces TV and radio programs as well as major concerts. Especially the kidsthey attach themselves to anything from Jamaica. But its not as serious as it is in Jamaicaits more a kind of trickle-down effect, a less intense version of the same conflict. For kids in school, for instance, you have a rival bully, so you label him Gaza. The trickle-down effect brings to mind T-shirts I saw for sale on the U.S.-based website BabylonYard: brightly colored, hipster-style, and decked out in Gaza and Gully logos. I ask Clarke if the feud could, in time, become as serious here as in Jamaica. Definitely, is his immediate reply. Mavado and Kartel have the same potential connections to gang-related communities as Biggie and Tupac did. Its this Biggie-Tupac echo that has made the Gaza-Gully feud so popular, especially because the reggae industry, Clarke explains, is slumping badly. Record sales are pitifully low, and New York reggae shows are fewer and farther between than theyve been in years. Kartel and Mavado are definitely two of the most talented dancehall artists Ive ever seen, but their popularity is overshadowing great music that needs to be at the forefront, he continues, citing roots-reggae acts like Tarrus Riley, Queen Ifrica, and songstress Etananone of whose buzzed-about 2009 albums earned Grammy nods. Sharon Gordon, head of the Brooklyn-based Coalition to Preserve Reggae Musicwhich held a forum last year entitled, Could Dancehall Be the Ruination of Reggae and, By Extension, the Jamaica Brand?agrees. Dubbing Mavado and Kartel hype masters who are not reflective of the Jamaican people nor their values, she says that although the Gaza-Gully feud is not as directly impactful on New Yorkers as it is on those in Jamaicafor those who choose sides, its more about the hype, she explains: The music is taking its toll in broader ways. Mavado and Kartel, she says, have used the ugliness of the day-to-day existence in our underserved communities as fodder for their baseless noise that is masquerading as music. At the command center of the Gaza Empirei.e., the hole-in-the-wall Kingston studio where Kartel recordsa sign reads, No idlers, weapons, loitering, and smoking of ganja. There, in a dark alleyway, a line of young men and women sit and wait silently. For what, its not clear; the place feels like a doctors waiting room. Occasionally, a ringtone shatters the silence. Its always a Kartel tune. I park myself by the door to the studio, marked Gaza. Kartel, 34, changed the name of his community from Borderline to Gaza after the former had coincidentally become a gay slang term; he chose the new moniker because Palestinians, he told a journalist, are serious and dem nah back down. Theres already a Tel Aviv and an Angola in Kingston, so it fit right in. After nearly an hour, Kartelborn Adidja Palmer, now also known as Di Teachaemerges, sporting fitted jeans and a tight T-shirt over a crisp button-down, flashing a jokers grin and all manner of charm. I am beckoned inside, where a man who introduces himself as Not Nice is seated at the mixing board, with a slim young woman in a ponytail who looks no older than 20 in the recording booth. She would, she explains, soon be the newest Gaza sensation, but Di Teacha hasnt decided what my name will be as yet. Di Teacha will sort it out. Di Teacha knows best. Another woman, professionally dressed, talks animatedly on her cell phone. She mentions being the cousin of a high-profile PNP politician; the words visa and arrest record punctuate her conversation. Kartel, whose numerous run-ins with the law have primarily involved weapons charges, has not held a U.S. visa in years. The walls are covered with Kartel: promos for his singles and the artists on his Gaza label, alongside ads for Vybz Rum, featuring the star decked out, pimp-style, in wide collars and furs, surrounded by scantily clad women. One poster features Di Teacha and the slogan Abstinence Mek Sense; another depicts a grinning Kartel encircled by schoolchildren above the tagline Stay in School. Make yourself comfortableIm going to smoke a cigarette, then we do the interview, Kartel says with a sly smile. He bows out. Meanwhile, the yet-unnamed new artist stumbles through her track, which involves re-voicing Kartels über-explicit lyrics about a c**ky that was too rude. It sounds like a knockoff of Romping Shop, Kartels 2008 hit duet with dancehall act Spice, which still earns play on American airwaves despite the fact that nearly the entire song, an exhaustive explication of a sexual encounter, must be bleeped out. Two hours later, Kartel, not back yet, evidently still hasnt finished his cigarette. Exasperated, I leave. Its vintage Kartelall smiles, all wiles. Hes dancehalls Anansi: the spider trickster figure from West African lore who is always one step ahead of his detractors. When Kartel endured public attack for illicit lyrics about romping shops and taking girls virginity, he came out with his own brand of condomsDaggering Condoms (daggering is slang for sex)and advocated abstinence or safe sex; when he was blasted for being too slack in his talk of girls and guns, he recorded a sappy love song or a scathingly witty political track. In a televised interview on a popular Jamaican show in late 2009, Kartel fired off rounds of talk familiar to anyone who has followed the stale discourse long surrounding hip-hop culture. He alluded to being Jamaicas scapegoat, absolved himself of responsibility for raising the countrys children, said hes no more violent than classic gangster movies, and insisted that, anyway, he and Mavado didnt create the violence, but were mere reflections of it. Kartel later shares, via his publicist, his thoughts on the feud and the truce. Maybe it was blown a little out of proportion by the media, he begins. But as they say, to whom much is given, much is expected. So both Mavado and I thought that it was the best thing to do so as to show the young, impressionable minds that this is only musicits art. Of the prime ministerbrokered trucewhich he dubs not a publicity stuntKartel, whose double-album Pon Di Gaza 2.0 was just released, insists, I know it will last. The government wasnt necessary, but we welcomed their efforts and pooled resources together for the betterment of music. The evening after the Kartel blowoff, I hear more of the same from the man dubbed the Gully God: 28-year-old Mavado, born David Brooks. Opening the door to the humble studio belonging to Daseca, the trio who produced many of the hits on Mavados two albums2007s Gangsta for Life and last years Mr. Brooks . . . A Better TomorrowIm all but knocked down by the force of that voice. Mavados signature singjay style has not just a tear in it but a full-on wail, capable of transforming any song, however fierce, from an homage to violence into a fervent lamentation. Through the glass I make out only the glitter of Mavados watch and platinum chain. When he emerges from the booth, he paces the room and looks at the floor, wringing his hands in search of lyrics for a track thats evolving into a story about wicked and evil people who try, in vain, to kill him. Its a laboriously slow songwriting process, and the result is, as with many of Mavados hits, lyrically lacklusterhe rhymes people with vehicleyet overwhelmingly compelling; Mavado can sing the Yellow Pages and make it sound profound. Thinking of the scene in Gaza the day before, Im struck by how utterly illogical the feud is: Mavado and Kartel are like yin and yang, bringing such strikingly different skill sets to the table that the notion of them competing is confounding. Kartel, golden-tongued lyricist and wily trickster, is the head; Mavadoreserved and reticent, yet the bearer of a heartrending voiceis the heart. Kartel, ever the ladies man, represents the feral exuberance of adolescence; introverted Mavado projects the gravitas of old age. When two great artists such as me and Vybz are at odds, its big, Mavado explains, taking a break on the steps outside the studio. But the whole musical rivalry doesnt even make Mavado a better person. Mavado always been doing good songs, even without a rival. He cites his new work: recent collaborations with Alicia Keys, Akon, and Shyne, and his new track Starlight, in which he asks, Somebody tell me/Why di Gully and di Gaza fight. Whenever Im in the studio, its a hit songI dont do 100 songs, but what I do, I make perfect, he continues. Its a direct reference to Kartel, known for manic recording sessions followed by the release of track after trackmany of them mediocre, one or two of them likely a hit. There are artists out thereI take this as another nod to Kartelwho feel they cant reach a certain level on their own, so they look to battle. Sometimes, artists try to pull down a next artistsome crab-in-a-barrel thing, you get me? And as for the Gully-Gaza thing, Mavado insists it was mostly because of the kidsthe kids get very wrapped up in it. Me and Vybz, we could have dealt with it without the government. I think of a cartoon Id seen in a Jamaican newspaper: the prime minister, decked out in a gangsta T-shirt, gold chain, and backward cap, telling a suit-clad figure marked IMF, Sorry, I have a more important meetingand opening a door marked Gaza/Gully meeting. Its certainly easier, after all, to broker peace between two artists than between two political parties whove been warring for decades. Several proposed projects were agreed upon at the meeting that day: joint school parties, a paint-out day to cover Gaza-Gully graffiti across Kingston, a peace concert, T-shirt giveaways, musical collaborations. Did they come to fruition? Im a very busy artist, and I guess Vybz is the same, comes Mavados answer. So will the peace last anyway? Im always at peace. At times, dem niggas get me violent, buthe smiles, something Ive never actually witnessed beforeIm all right now. Pressing him on this, I ask if Mavado vs. Kartel can ever end up like Biggie vs. Tupac. Most people do have me and Vybz on a Biggie-and-Tupac level, he replies. But Im not really focused on that, because they are two deceasedthey are two dead people. Me and Vybzs situation is music different from that because I want to live on, you know? He pauses, taking a deep breath. And I guess Vybz want to do the same.

POPULAR 1990S RAPPER ARRESTED FOR PISTOL WHIPPING HIS MAMA!!! (DETAILS INSIDE)

1269957392oh_my.jpg

MediaTakeOut.com has some very DISTURBING news to report. A rapper from the group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony was arrested on Sunday during an Ohio concert.

Here's what happened. 36 year old Flesh Bone (gov't name Stanley Howse) was on the run for NEARLY a decade on this charge. It all stems from a 1998 incident when, during an argument with his mother, Flesh Bone reportedly pulled out a handgun and beat her in the head with it - leaving a 1-inch gash on her head.

Flesh Bone was taken into custody and is currently sitting in jail in Cleveland Ohio!!

Higher intelligence causes people to be left wing and reject religion as they are more highly evolved, science says. They are even less prone to adultery.

Satoshi Kanazawa, an evolutionary psychologist at the London School of Economics, holds that humans more inclined to adopt non-traditional behaviours are more intelligent than mere traditionals. These non-traditional behaviours yield a higher chance of survival in a rapidly changing environment.

In social evolutionary terms, non-traditional behaviour includes atheism, liberal political leanings and (male) monogamy, he asserts.

He claims the results of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, which has been observing a group of subjects since 1994, support his theories.

This study found that teenage subjects who did better in IQ tests tended to have newer patterns of behaviour when tested 7 years later they described themselves as very liberal and not at all religious more often, as opposed to the religious and conservative, who appeared to have lower IQs.

The difference was apparently statistically significant, but not enormous, at 11 points. It is not clear if they adjusted for the noted tendency of younger adults to be more left-leaning than older adults, but the results are apparently robust enough to survive publication in a peer-reviewed journal, albeit one for psychologists.

With such incendiary conclusions, the crucial scientific admonition that correlation does not equate to causation will doubtless be drowned out amidst glib attempts by leftists and the godless to portray their beliefs as the natural consequence of higher intelligence.

Naturally, that academics and scientists tend overwhelmingly to be left wing and irreligious has nothing to do with these scholarly and impartial scientific conclusions.

hmm what do yall think? even tho i'm not religious i think its ok to be 'stupid' if ur living by ur beleifs, im sure scientist do that

A new release from Baby Tash dubbed Nuh Diss From No Bwoy has been generating lots of excitement in the dancehall world, especially among her fans.

The song itself is a by-the-numbers track where she growls her rude-girl credentials but what makes the song such a beacon for controversy are choice lines, mentioning several male dancehall artistes such as Mavado and Kartel, and a laugh line that seems a little vanilla at first, but appears to definitely diss Blak Ryno where she takes aim at his hasty exit from the Portmore Empire. The song, which is on Tesha Miller's latest production, can be listened to at this link:http://www.box.net/shared/1myt16b62v

"The song is not meant for any offence to anyone, I am just playing with words. So far, I have been getting a crazy reaction to it on my fan pages on myspace and Facebook...now they are looking forward to some even crazier things from Baby Tash," she said, laughing.

Baby Tash will be performing at the Greater Portmore High school's barbecue today, and in May, she will be making an appearance as a guest
judge on the popular Dancing Dynamites television show.

"I will also be performing on the semi-finals," she said.

Vybz Kartel - File

Dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel is claiming that he lost his mobile phone, leading to the unauthorised release of pictures with two women performing oral sex on him.

"I lost my BlackBerry, the rest is history," the Portmore Empire-boss told THE WEEKEND STAR yesterday, noting that the phone was lost while he was in Negril.

The first two pictures came to the fore about 6 a.m. yesterday morning. Since then, they have been circulating on the Internet, especially on social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter. In those pictures, a woman with a tongue piercing holds his member as they both look into the camera. The woman is light-skinned and has a tattoo on her left shoulder.

blonde and red wig

Afterwards, THE WEEKEND STAR received two other pictures, one with the previous woman, who is now at a different angle, and another picture with a different woman. This next female is dark-skinned, has a pierced nose and is wearing a blonde and red wig. But in these two latest photos Vybz Kartel's face cannot be seen.

When asked how he feels about pictures of this nature being in the public domain, Vybz Kartel said, "mi vex how dem out but it's already out there and blowing up the net. Unfortunately, it can't be recalled."

He also spoke about the picture on his Twitter page, responding to questions raised from his fans. "Why should these photos cause such chaos when everyone an dem mumma kno that Vybz Kartel is the "2Live Luke" of dancehall. Haven't they been listening to my lyrics all these years?," said the artiste who explicitly sings about oral sex in songs like Go Go ClubWine Pon Yuh and Tek.

Since the release of the pictures, Vybz Kartel said he has been in contact with the women, who he refers to as his 'friends'. He said they are angry that the pictures have been exposed.

But when asked how he feels they will affect the women, he said, "nobody knows them. I'm the one being affected 'cause my face can't hide."

Only late last year, the artiste now known as Lisa Hyper a former member of Kartel's Empire was seen in a photograph performing oral sex on a man.

Blak Ryno

It's now official that deejay Blak Ryno, one of the Portmore Empire's top guns, has officially left the Gaza.

Earlier this week rumours had begun circulating once again that Ryno had officially left the Empire. The deejay, however, contacted THE STAR to confirm that as of yesterday, he is no longer in the Vybz Kartel-led Portmore Empire.

Born Romaine Anderson, Ryno has been a member of the Portmore Empire since January 2007, where he was officially signed to Kartel's Adidjaheim Records and made his name with songs such as Thugs Anthem,Bend Over among others.

Months prior to this, rumours had been circulating in the streets and on the Internet that relations between the young deejay and his Gaza camp had not been good, with speculations that he, among other members have been beaten on a regular basis. Ryno has however, denied to THE STAR all rumours of being beaten or having witnessed any beatings on the Gaza.

unwilling to say much

Speaking briefly to THE STAR, Ryno was unwilling to say much on the matter yesterday, only admitting that relations between himself and the Empire were still good.

Ryno is the third deejay to have departed the Empire recently, the first being late last year when Lisa Hyper was expelled from the organisation after the Empire 'unanimously agreed' to end their professional relationship with the female deejay. This development came shortly after a compromising picture was leaked on the Internet of Hyper.

In January, a newcomer to the Portmore Empire, Gaza Kim willingly left the Empire after an incident which took place in the 'Big Yard' community off Mannings Hill Road. Gaza Kim, who now goes by the name Kym, was severely beaten on the Gaza by what sources say was orders from Kartel. However, Kartel denied the claims.

This week rumours also began circulating once more that singer Jah Vinci had also left the Empire as well, when contacted on Tuesday, however, Jah Vinci responded, "Gaza fi life."

A police constable accused of sexually assaulting a woman at gunpoint, was offered bail Monday.

Constable Everton Linton was offered $200,000 bail when he faced the Gun Court Monday on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and assault with intent to rape.

Constable Linton, who is attached to the Motorised Patrol Division, was charged last week Wednesday following a ruling by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

It is reported that on April 27, 2009, the Constable, who had developed a relationship with the woman, was driving her to a location in St. Catherine when they got into a fuss along Highway 2000.

The Constable reportedly accused the woman of having an affair.

He then told her that he wanted to physically examine her to prove his case, however, she objected.

It is alleged that the policeman pulled his gun and began fondling her against her will.

An off-duty police officer then drove up to the couple and made enquiries.

Constable Linton told him they were having a domestic dispute.

It is reported that the Constable asked the off duty cop to take the woman to a location in St. Catherine.

The woman later reported to the off-duty cop that she had been assaulted and he encouraged her to file a report at the Spanish Town Police Station.

Following an investigation by the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) Constable Linton was arrested and charged.

Defence attorney Peter Champagnie told the court Monday that his client strongly denies the allegations that he pulled his gun and assaulted the woman.

Constable Linton is to return to court on April 26.

Four weeks after he submitted an application Wayne Chen, Chairman of the Urban Development Corporation, is still awaiting word on whether he will be issued a new US visa.

On March 1, Mr. Chen presented the relevant documents to the US Embassy in Kingston for a new visa.

However, checks by RJR News revealed that a response has not been forthcoming.

Mr. Chen was thrust into the spotlight last month following the discovery that his visa had been revoked.

There was speculation that the cancellation of his visa was connected to the government's refusal to agree to a request from the US to extradite Tivoli Gardens strongman Christopher "Dudus" Coke.

However, Prime Minister Bruce Golding later denied any such connection.

Following diplomatic talks involving Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Ken Baugh and officials of the US Embassy, Mr. Chen applied for a new visa.

At that time, Mr. Chen said he expected the processing of his application to be hassle-free.

Puma, the multinational Germany-based sports goodsmanufacturers which has endorsed numerous sporting stars, including Jamaica's sprint sensation Usain Bolt, has dismissed rumours that other sponsors are looking to pry Bolt from its grasp.

"Usain is under contract with Puma, there is no battle. Usain is still under contract, so there is no battle," Pascal Rolling, Puma's international running marketing manager, told The Gleaner in an interview while he attended the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Championships at the National Stadium.

"Usain represents Jamaica in a way that Bob Marley represents Jamaica," Rolling pointed out.

"At the moment, Usain represents track and field. He is such an outstanding athlete, which comes around only every 15 years.

"Of course, he is the most important element for us as an athlete," added Rolling, who is looking forward to the Diamond League, which will commence on May 14 in Doha, Qatar.

"Before the World Champion-ships next year, one of the very important events is the Diamond League and the participation of Usain Bolt this summer. We certainly expect a lot of great performances. This will give us an opportunity to include that in our marketing mix again, to communicate Usain and Jam-aica's involvement with Puma."

Brand's essence

His company is the sponsor of Jamaica's track and field team and Rolling thinks it has been a great partnership.

"When we decided to work with Jamaica some years ago, we took the decision to do so because Jamaica speaks the brand's essence in terms of the mix of sports and lifestyle," he noted.

"Jamaica is very successful on the track, but also an attractive country, and there is the culture and the music, and this is a perfect match for Puma."

Rolling also spoke of their Champs involvement.

"We have been sponsoring Boys and Girls' Champs for the last 10 years or so because Jamaica's success starts at Boys and Girls' Champs. We always bring some journalists from overseas to increase the exposure of Champs and the fantastic atmosphere that surrounds Champs, which you can find nowhere else in the world."

Sixty-seven Haitians were last night transported by boat from the Ken Wright Pier in Port Antonio, Portland, back to their homeland, after fleeing economic hardship and starvation.

Included in the batch were the 62 persons who landed in two groups on March 23. The other Haitians include a 16-year-old boy who landed illegally on February 12, and four Haitian males who were incarcerated in a jail in Kingston.

"We have a responsibility to ensure they are safely onboard," said Inspector Steve Brown, head of the Constabulary Communication Network. "They were transported by a Jamaica Defence Force coast guard vessel ...," he said. The Haitians boarded the coast guard vessel at approximately 8:45 p.m. and it set sail at exactly 9:05 p.m., amidst waves of goodbyes from social workers attached to the Red Cross and the Adventist Relief Agency.

an obedient bunch

"We were just getting to know them," said Gloria Miller, a social worker from the Port Antonio Red Cross. "They were an obedient bunch, and it is a bit sad to see them go. I am really going to miss them, but I will cherish the memories as I learnt a lot from them."

The Haitians were transported from the Port Antonio Seventh Day Adventist Church by bus shortly before 8 p.m., and as they boarded the vessel, they tearfully waved goodbye to the many social workers and police personnel.

The persistent crying of a year-and-half-old baby, who was admitted to hospital for two days suffering from dehydration, after arriving on the island, could also be heard.

Just before they boarded the vessel, the Haitians received additional medical treatment from health personnel.

Dancehall superstar Sean Paul is now sporting a new hairdo, having cut off his braids.

The artiste posted two pictures of his new haircut on the social networking website, Twitter, about two weeks ago. He referred to the new hairdo as a 'speehawk'.

The pictures have had mixed responses. A pleased fan said, "Very sexy! Nice face, nice music, winning look!" Another said, "I love how you look when your hair cut short, it's been so long!"

On the flip side, one person commented, "OMG! It looks awful! Him shudda make it fade out instead of taking everything off di side." While another said, "He looks weird, way too dramatic."

The pictures have also found themselves on US-based mediatakeout.com. On the website, before and after pictures were shown of the artiste, where they say he is "rocking an interesting new hairstyle."

Meanwhile, word out of his camp is that he decided that it was time for a change after wearing braids for his last three albums; Dutty Rock, The Trinity and Imperial Blaze.

US hints at diplomatic war if Coke, others not extradited now

The United States Government has flayed the Bruce Golding administration over Jamaica's handling of the extradition request for west Kingston strongman Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.

In an unusually caustic report on Jamaica in its annual International Narcotics Control Strategy Report , the Barack Obama administration made it clear it was not satisfied with Kingston's handling of the extradition request and charged that the Golding government was not holding to the rules.

"While cooperation between (the) Government of Jamaica (GOJ) and United States Government law-enforcement agencies remained strong, delays in proceeding with the significant extradition request for a major alleged narcotics and firearms trafficker who is reported to have ties to the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), and subsequent delays in other extradition requests, have called into question Kingston's commitment to law-enforcement cooperation with the US," the report claimed.

Last night, Minister of Information Daryl Vaz was unwilling to speak on the US report, pointing The Gleaner instead to National Security Minister Dwight Nelson or Justice Minister Dorothy Lightbourne. Neither could be reached for comment.

According to Washington, in the past, extradition requests from its law-enforcement agencies were routinely and timely processed by Jamaican political and judicial authorities.

But that contradicts Golding, who told Parliament late last year that the extradition request was being held up because the Jamaican Government had unanswered questions.

"There are legal issues that need to be addressed. We have informed communications through the appropriate channels with the United States Government," Golding told Parliament.

Nothing strange or different

However, that has failed to satisfy the US which continues to argue that there is nothing strange or different in its request for the extradition of Dudus to answer drug and gun charges.

"The GOJ's unusual handling of the August request forthe extradition of a high-profile Jamaican crime lord with reported ties to the ruling JLP which currently holds a majority in Parliament, on alleged drug and firearms trafficking charges marked a dramatic change in GOJ's previous cooperation on extradition, including a temporary suspension in the processing of all other pending requests and raises serious questions about the GOJ's commitment to combating transnational crime.

"The high-profile suspect resides in and essentially controls the Kingston neighbourhood known as Tivoli Gardens, a key constituency for the JLP," the report said.

It added: "Jamaica's processing of the extradition request has been subjected to unprecedented delays, unexplained disclosure of law-enforcement information to the press, and unfounded allegations questioning US compliance with the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty and Jamaican law."

With its anger thinly disguised, Washington charged that high-profile organised criminal gangs continued to successfully operate in Jamaica with the Government unable to exclusively focus on high-powered leaders of criminal gangs.

Received state contracts

"This is due to the fact that these leaders are afforded community and, in some cases, police and political protection. Additionally, their activity is often linked with legitimate business holdings."

Dudus is a director in Incomparable Enterprises Ltd, which has received millions of dollars in state contracts, and Presidential Click, which promotes several major dances and stage shows, including the weekly Passa Passa street dance in west Kingston and the annual Champions In Action stage show.

Washington argued that while: "As a matter of policy, (the) GOJ does not facilitate or encourage illicit production or distribution of narcotic or psychotropic drugs or other controlled substances or the laundering of proceeds from illegal drug transactions, (the) pervasive public corruption continues to undermine efforts against drug-related ? crimes, and plays a major role in the safe passage of drugs and drug proceeds through Jamaica."

In a parting shot, the US Government hinted that its relationship with the Jamaican Government could deteriorate if Dudus and others are not extradited quickly.

"The GOJ is encouraged to demonstrate its political will to address corruption by successfully investigating, prosecuting, and convicting corrupt officials at all levels of government service and by the timely extradition of fugitives in accordance with the provisions of the bilateral extradition treaty without regard to political influence or party affiliation."

Kingston and Washington have been at odds since last year when an extradition request was submitted for Coke.

The request for the extradition of Coke - who is wanted in the United States on drug and weapons trafficking charges - is still with Attorney General and Justice Minister Dorothy Lightbourne, who has to sign the document before it becomes a legal matter.

In January, the Government rejected an extradition request for businessman Presley Bingham on the basis that it was related to charges he had been to the courts about before.

Fifteen people were extradited last year and, currently, there are two cases that have been before the courts over the past two years. Between 1994 and 2002, a total of 38 people were extradited from Jamaica to the US.

HILLSDALE, New Jersey (AP) -- Police in a New Jersey town say someone broke into a restaurant and cooked a chicken and rice dish before fleeing --leaving behind a pile of dirty dishes.

They say the hungry burglar on Saturday broke through an exhaust fan in the back wall of the Matsu Sushi Grill in Hillsdale, a town of 10,000 residents just north-west of New York City. The burglar got chicken from a freezer and cooked it with rice in a frying pan.

Detective Robert Francaviglia (frank-uh-VIL'-ee-uh) says the burglar ignored $200 in the cash register and took only the chicken and rice. He says the culprit may have been a homeless person searching for food.

Police say the break-in is similar to one at a nearby fried chicken fast-food restaurant last year.

FAIRFIELD, Connectivut (AP) -- Police in Connecticut say they had ample warning of a bank robbery because the two suspects called the bank ahead of time and told an employee to get a bag of money ready.

Police arrested 27-year-old Albert Bailey and an unidentified 16-year-old boy on robbery and threatening charges Tuesday afternoon at a People's United Bank branch in Fairfield.

Sgt James Perez says the two Bridgeport residents showed up about 10 minutes after making the call and were met by police in the parking lot. Perez told the Connecticut Post the suspects were "not too bright".

It's not clear if Bailey and the teen have lawyers.

A lack of direction

OREM, Utah (AP) -- Utah police say a man accused of stealing two phones from a convenience store was arrested when he flagged down the investigating officer and asked for directions.

Police say the officer noticed that John White matched the description a store clerk gave of the thief, and the address White wanted turned out to be the same one the officer was checking.

The address had been left on a slip of paper the thief left at a gas station.

White was arrested Tuesday after the officer found he had both phones, along with a small amount of marijuana.

Police say charges are pending.

Father jailed for killing children A jealous father who strangled his two young children with computer cables to get back at his wife has been jailed for a minimum of 28 years. Petros Williams, 37, of Manchester, deliberately chose internet connection cords to punish her when she used dating websites following their marriage breakdown. He also cruelly filmed a "farewell video" of his four-year-old daughter Yolanda and two-year-old son Theo in which he told them to face the camera and say "we will miss you mummy". A jury at Manchester Crown Court found Williams guilty of both murders after just 90 minutes of deliberation. The Zimbabwean had denied the charges in his five-day trial as he suggested his wife, Morongoe Molemohi, 30, carried out the killings last October. Passing sentence, Mr Justice Kenneth Parker told him: "There is no doubt that you intended to kill them. It is hard to conceive any more shocking crime than a parent deliberately taking the life of his or her child. "We saw from the video that Yolanda and Theo were happy children, full of love and laughter, with a whole lifetime ahead of them and, above all, absolute trust in their father who, for entirely selfish purposes, would end their brief lives. "You remain in denial. You have simply refused to come to terms with the enormity of your deeds. "You have shown not an ounce of remorse in this court. Your pity has been exclusively reserved for yourself." Williams, of Whalley Range, stared blankly as the verdicts were returned.
