REGGAE artistes I-Octane and Romaine Virgo were the two standouts at the 12th staging of GT Taylors Christmas Extravaganza at Independence Park, Black River, yesterday morning.

Due to the lack of proper time management, some of dancehalls highly anticipated acts got very little or no time on stage. Bounty Killa and his Alliance squad set was cut short whilst Aidonias performance was less than two minutes. DJ Spice didnt get an opportunity to perform.

When I-Octane made his entrance on stage the patrons went into a frenzy. Aerosol spray torches were ignited and the symphony of horns and whistles was almost deafening.

Among his strings of hit songs delivered during the first 15 minutes set Mind Who Dem A Diss, Study Yu Fren Dem, Burn Dem Bridge, My Life and Loose A Friend.

During his performance, a huge fire was lit in the general section much to the disgust of several patrons.

The torches were re-lit when the Alliance and Gully Squad lead by Bounty Killer and Mavado, respectively, hit centrestage.

Mi want dem free up Vybz Kartel as mi and him have unsettled business, said Mavado before hurling the lyrics to several hit songs such as Im on the Rock, Starlight, Whe Dem A Do and Delilah.

Kiprich also gave fans a teaser of what to expect at Sting with the clash with Tony Matterhorn, Merciless and himself.

Before his set on stage came to a premature ending, Bounty Killer, gave his social commentary in such as Poor People Fed Up, Caan Believe Mi Eyes.

Khago, Cocoa Tea, Twins of Twins, Teflon, DAngel, Macka Diamond, Lutan Fyah, Chuck Fenda and Zamunda gave a good account of themselves.

For the past few years the dancehall scene has been completely dominated by the likes of Vybz Kartel and Mavado. Almost all the rhythms going out had either one, or in some cases, both of the entertainers featured on it. It is clear that the thinking amongst the producers was that these men were needed to guarantee the success of the project. However, one listen to the recent releases from emerging producers and you will see that is clearly no longer the case.

 

Young producers seem to be more focused on releasing quality productions that display their skills and create awareness about them. They no longer see the need to get a brand name artist on the project as they are finding that going that route is simply too costly. Digital Sham, owner of Digitalize Records and Phamily Productions is one such producer who shares that belief.

 

Since the start of 2011 Digital Sham has released two rhythm driven albums both collectively featuring the likes of Fyahkin, Dexta Daps, Harry Todler, Unicorn and a host of others. He has just released his third album for the year and again has decided not to invest in any of the big brand name acts. His latest album entitled, Hill Top Riddim, features himself, Karamanti, Ju Ju Irie and few others.

 

Sham believes that the cost of getting more established artists on the projects are just too much for the upcoming producers. And unfortunately, getting the big names does not mean that you will get record sales or mass amount of downloads. Most producers now prefer to put the money towards promoting the songs, as that is also very costly these days.

Reggae icon Buju Bantons legal woes were certainly a hot topic for the Caribbean community this year as he was tried and sentenced on drug-related charges. The embattled star is currently serving a 10 year prison term at the Federal Correctional Institution in Miami, Florida after being entrapped by law enforcement officials.

However there may be light at the end of the tunnel, sooner rather than later for the I Wanna Be Loved singer after an error on the part of the United States government. Reports are suggesting that the singers trial should have taken place within 70 days of his arrest, as this is a guaranteed right under the Sixth Amendment in US judicial procedure.

Say it aint so Andrew!  Sorry, I mean, say it isnt so Prime Minister Holness.  Election is right after Christmas and just before the New Year?!  I seriously have to rant about this.  What were you thinking Mr. Prime Minister?  How can you call elections so late in December?  This is the period when most people are in the middle of their Christmas celebrations and do not want to be disturbed.  I thought you said you would not disturb our Christmas but that is exactly what you are doing Sir.  Yes Christmas is on the 25^th of December but Jamaicans start celebrating Christmas from Christmas Eve straight back to about January 3^rd.  Some even begin earlier than that.

If you did not want to disturb our Christmas Sir, you should have waited until January or you should have called the elections during your honeymoon period.  Yes I know these things take great planning and a lot of thinking have to go into this process and various factors have to be taken into consideration but were the majority of the Jamaican people and our entertainment calendar not factors taken into consideration?  It seems not.

Apple Inc. is moving forward with its assault on television, following up on the ambitions of its late co-founder, Steve Jobs. In recent weeks, Apple executives have discussed their vision for the future of TV with media executives at several large companies, according to people familiar with the matter. Apple's Eddy Cue, seen in October, is involved in the company's TV plans. Apple is also working on its own television that relies on wireless streaming technology to access shows, movies and other content, according to people briefed on the project. In the recent meetings with media companies, the Apple executives, including Senior Vice President Eddy Cue, have outlined new ways Apple's technology could recognize users across phones, tablets and TVs, people familiar with the talks said. In at least one meeting, Apple described future television technology that would respond to users' voices and movements, one of the people said. Such technology, which Apple indicated may take longer than some of its other ideas, might allow users to use their voices to search for a show or change channels. Apple is still saying little about what specific software and devices it is working on. The people familiar with the meetings said the Cupertino, Calif., company was "vague" and that Apple hasn't made proposals to license shows for any new product offering. Still, the talkssome of which were made at the request of media companies seeking an update on Apple's planssuggest that Apple's TV strategy is advancing. The technology company often keeps its products and ideas, close to the vest until as late as possible. More Samsung Files New Claims Against Apple In Germany Apple executives have given some specifics in its talks with media companies. The company, for example, has discussed new ways they could stream media companies' content, allowing a user to watch a video on a TV set, then pick up another device, such as a smartphone, and keep watching the video on the move, one of the people familiar said. Another person familiar with the talks said the types of new services Apple and the media companies are discussing could be done with Apple's existing technologies, which include its Apple TV set-top box. Around three months after it started selling a new, $99 version of the set-top box last year, Apple said it had sold more than a million but hasn't provided sales figures since. Apple's uptick in talks with its media partners is part of the company's strategy to change the way consumers watch TV, just as the company transformed the music and cellphone industries. Google Inc. is trying to enable users to access apps and Internet video on traditional TVs through its Google TV software, which shares some technology with its Android mobile operating system and can be controlled via Android and iPhone apps. Microsoft Corp. offers a mobile app to search for and play entertainment content on its Xbox live gaming console, which streams an array of video. Cable, satellite and phone companies are launching their own video services for computers and tablets and reformatting their traditional interfaces to resemble them. But they are worried that a proliferation of new services could undermine the existing TV business, which brings in more than $150 billion a year in the U.S. in advertising and consumer spending on monthly TV subscriptions from cable, satellite and telecommunications companies. What kind of cooperation Apple is seeking from media companies remains unclear. Over the years, Apple has had mixed success getting television companies to agree to new business arrangements for its iTunes store. It has also broached the idea of licensing content directly from media companies for some sort of subscription-TV service, resembling the packages offered now by cable operators, but the talks have been "exploratory," according to people familiar with the matter. In meetings as far back as 2010, Mr. Jobs met with a series of cable and satellite executives to discuss next-generation television services for Apple devices, according to people familiar with the matter. Among the questions Mr. Jobs asked in the series of meetings was how much of the universe of video content the providers actually had the rights to, according to a person familiar with the meetings. Apple's own executives have wondered what the company had up its sleeve. Last year, at its "top 100" meeting for senior managers in Carmel, Calif., an attendee asked Mr. Jobs whether Apple was developing a television. Embattled dancehall entertainer Vybz Kartel was remanded in the Home Circuit Court today in relation to the Clive lizard Williams murder case.

Supreme Court judge Leighton Pusey ordered that Kartel and the others with whom he is charged return to court on January 13 next year.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, is charged jointly with fellow deejay Shawn Campbell more popularly known as Shawn Storm, fashion designer Calvin 'Moonie' Haye and Kiro Jones.

Two other men have been charged by the police in relation to Williams killing.

The Home Circuit Court was told that the case against the two is before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate Court.

The case against Kartel, Shawn Storm, Haye and Jones was transferred from the RM court this morning to the circuit court.

Attorney-at-law Valerie Neita-Robertson today complained that the crown did not inform the defence of its plan to have the case moved to circuit court.

Neita-Robertson said the defence was upset by the decision, as it had plans to make a bail application noting that Kartel and his co-accused have been in custody since October.

Justice Pusey ordered the crown to provide the defence with copies of statements and video recordings allegedly linking the men to the killing before 2 o clock tomorrow afternoon.

The judge also ordered the crown to turn over all material in its possession to the defence before 4 oclock on January 5 next year.

Vanessa Bryant, has filed divorce papers from her superstar husband, according to reports. TMZ is reporting that Vanessa Bryant, Kobe's wife of 10 years, has moved to end their marriage, citing "irreconcilable differences."

Vanessa has requested joint custody of their daughters Natalia Diamante and Gianna Maria-Onore, who are 8 and 5 years old, respectively. Kobe and the then-Vanessa Lane met while he was shooting a video for his hip-hop album, which was never released. Lane was a 17-year-old backup dancer who was still in high school. When Kobe and Vanessa married in 2001, his parents and sisters who disapproved of the relationship were not in attendance. In Shaquille O'Neal's recently released memoir, Shaq says that none of Bryant's teammates, with whom he had a thorny relationship, were invited. In 2003, Kobe was charged with raping a 19-year-old hotel employee at a Colorado resort.

Before the case went to trial, Kobe settled out of court with the accuser for an undisclosed sum. It was during the leadup to this trial that Kobe brought Vanessa an 8-carat purple diamond ring worth nearly $4 million.

Manchester United could return to this season's Champions League if the Swiss Football Association fails to comply with Fifa and punish FC Sion.

Sion were thrown out of the Europa League for fielding ineligible players in their match against Celtic.

The Swiss FA has until 13 January to act and Fifa has threatened to suspend Switzerland and their club sides.

If the ban took effect, FC Basel would be ejected from the Champions League and United could be reinstated.

The Swiss champions knocked Sir Alex Ferguson's side out of European football's elite competition and into the Europa League, earning a 3-3 draw at Old Trafford before winning the home match 2-1.

Sion were put under a transfer embargo over the signing of Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary, but proceeded to sign six players in the summer.

The six players took their case to a civil court in the canton of Valais, which ruled they could play, and subsequently fielded them in the Swiss league.

Sion then fielded five of the six players during the Europa League play-off tie against Celtic and were kicked out of the competition as a result, with Uefa's decision to expel them upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Thursday.

Fifa has now ordered the Swiss FA to enforce a ban on registering six Sion players signed during the transfer embargo.

"As a consequence, all matches in which the relevant players participated shall be declared forfeit or three points shall be deducted respectively," Fifa said. "Should this deadline not be respected, the Swiss FA will be automatically suspended from 14 January 2012 onwards."

Under the terms of a Fifa suspension, a country's national and club teams, referees and officials are prohibited from taking part in international matches and meetings, or receive Fifa funding.

Uefa said it was confident the Swiss Football Association would comply with the Fifa request before the January 13 deadline. "Should this not be the case UEFA will review the situation nearer the time," Uefa added.

ATLANTA -- Atlanta police say the rapper Slim Dunkin was gunned down Friday evening in a city music studio as he was preparing to record a video.

Police Maj. Keith Meadows said the rapper, whose real name is Mario Hamilton, was fatally shot in the chest after getting into an argument with another individual.

He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Meadows told The Associated Press late Friday that police have not been able to identify the shooter. He said investigators have been interviewing those who were inside the studio. He said as many as 20 people were inside the small office-type building at the time of the shooting, which took place around 5:30 p.m., but they were in different places.

Police have not recovered the handgun that was used. Investigators remained at the scene late Friday evening.

"Right now we're just trying to....identify who may have seen what, really just trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together," Meadows said. "It seems everybody witnessed something very different. We're just trying to go back and make sense of everything."
