Cops: Drunk man steals ambulance, leads slow chase

SAN DIEGO San Diego police said a man just out of the hospital for intoxication stole an ambulance and fled from police before they stopped him with spike strips. Police said 52-year-old Paul John Sos was arrested Saturday on suspicion of auto theft, failure to yield to police and felony drunk driving.

Police Sgt. Ray Battrick said Sos had been found drunk and taken to Sharp Hospital in a private ambulance. Battrick said Sos checked himself out Saturday morning then found an unattended fire department ambulance with keys in the ignition.

The ambulance had GPS installed and police quickly found it, but Sos refused to stop, leading a slow pursuit through residential streets before he was stopped with spike strips and arrested.

Police did not know if he had hired an attorney.

LORD OF THE RING ... WBA champ David Haye

DAVID HAYE retained his WBA title with an awesome display of power punching that put John Ruiz on the floor FOUR times.

The Londoner savaged Ruiz from the first bell with sledgehammer bombs delivered with blinding speed.

This was as one-sided as a heavyweight contest can get and Ruiz's corner finally had enough when trainer Miguel Diaz waved the white towel in surrender after two minutes and one second of round nine at Manchester's MEN Arena.

A delighted Haye said: "I knew it was going to be tough, but I knew when I landed my bombs I was going to hurt him.

"Credit to Ruiz, he was a durable opponent, but I could have taken him out in the first round if I didn't rush my shots.

"I'm over the moon and really happy with the performance. I felt I was really sharp."

Ruiz, despite being outclassed, was dangerous throughout and rocked Haye with some heavy rights to the jaw.

The veteran American was down twice in a sensational opening round as he went looking for the champion like a bull in a china shop.

He hit the canvas for the first time after a solid right to the face and was put down again before cl**tching the back of his head, hanging over the ropes, as if to say he was caught by a rabbit punch.

Referee Guillermo Perez agreed and took a point away from Haye even though he gave Ruiz his second standing eight count.

Ruiz carried on fighting after the bell and Haye's trainer Adam Booth screamed for the official to take a point away from the American.

The 38-year-old Quiet Man was taking a sustained beating like he had never absorbed before, with Haye's jab softening him up for the big over-hand right crosses.

And the sell-out Manchester crowd loved it as Haye delivered what he had promised in his first title defence.

Ruiz clung on for as long as could but was put down again in both the fifth and sixth rounds.

He refused to stop moving forward, only to be picked off at will by the impressive Hayemaker.

And it came as little surprise when Diaz's corner asked for the fight to be stopped in the ninth, handing Haye a technical knockout to extend his record to 24 wins in 25 fights.

After the fight, Haye was quick to pay tribute to the fans who turned out to support him on a great night for British boxing.

The 29-year-old said: "The crowd has been absolutely electric for me. There was a 20,000 capacity here with everyone screaming for the Hayemaker.

"With performances like that I'll keep the fans behind me. I loved the whole occasion."

In 1983, the space shuttle Challenger roared into orbit on its maiden voyage.

Ten years ago: In a volatile day on the U.S. stock market, the Nasdaq composite index and the Dow Jones industrial average each plunged more than 500 points before reversing course as buyers flooded back into the market.

Five years ago: Tens of thousands of pilgrims paid their final respects to Pope John Paul II after his body was carried on a crimson platform to St. Peter's Basilica. The Supreme Court ruled creditors could not seize the Individual Retirement Accounts of bankrupt people. 14-year-old dies after exorcism

A 14-year-old girl has died after neighbours and a local pastor tried to treat her convulsions with an exorcism at a church.

Sangeeta Persaud began to have convulsions as she was drinking tea for breakfast at her grandmother's home in Canal Number Two, a farming village west of the capital of Guyana, the grandmother told the Stabroek News and Guyana Chronicle.

The woman said neighbours arrived to help, and a local pastor convinced them she was suffering from demonic possession. After trying to cast out the demons at her home, the grandmother and other witnesses told the newspapers, neighbors carried her to a church, where the pastor and aides rubbed or pounded on her stomach and had her drink lime juice.

She was finally taken to a hospital, where she died, Police Commander Colin West said Friday. Results from a preliminary autopsy were inconclusive and no one has been charged, but West said police were continuing to investigate.

It was not clear why the girl was not taken to a doctor earlier.

The pastor presided over the girl's funeral on Thursday as the child's mother, father and other relatives shouted accusations at one another and at the preacher, the Stabroek News reported.

It said the pastor disputed news accounts of what had occurred, but did not say which parts he felt were inaccurate.

The newspaper said the girl had been living with her grandmother in a one-bedroom house and her parents were separated.

Drunk man calls police to help him out of bar

LEXINGTON, Ky. Drunk in a bar and can't get out, who you gonna call? Police. That's what Todd Fitzwater did in Lexington. WLEX-TV reported Fitzwater called 911 Thursday and said he'd gotten drunk and passed out at Todd's Karaoke Bar the night before, awakened and had a few more then couldn't get out of the bar, which was closed.

Officers tapped on the door Thursday afternoon to guide the 45-year-old Fitzwater to it so he could let them in to help him.

The bar owner said Fitzwater is a "regular" who lives nearby. The barkeep stayed with him until 7:30 a.m. Thursday, then left figuring Fitzwater would eventually let himself out and go home.

Suspect Uses Needle During Bucks Co. Robberies

Police in Bucks County are searching for a suspect who used a hypodermic needle as a weapon during two convenience store robberies overnight.

The suspect entered a Wawa in the 3500 block of Bethlehem Pike in Hilltown Township at about 4 a.m.

Police said the suspect, armed with a needle, ordered an employee to give him cash. The suspect reportedly threatened to stab the clerks with HIV infected needles if they didn't give him money. When his demands were not met, he fled the store on foot.

A short time later, the suspect used the same robbery tactic at a Sunoco in the 1500 block of Bethlehem Pike. He fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

Authorities described the suspect as a white male in his 20s. If you have any information, please contact police.
New Jersey police say someone knows who gang-raped a 7-year-old girl but fears of violent retaliation are preventing anyone from coming forward with information in the case.

Two separate shootings on the same Chicago street have sent six people to the hospital. Officers were investigating a quadruple shooting when a gunman opened fire, hitting two more people.

Kenny Easterday, 35, was born with a rare condition called sacral agenesis which prevented his spine from developing normally.

When he was six-months-old doctors amputated his legs and used part of his shinbone to complete his partially formed spine.

As a boy Kenny was offered prosthetic legs but he hated wearing them and preferred to use his hands or a skateboard to get around.

"My dad pretty much taught me how to walk on my hands," said Mr Easterday, from West Virginia, USA.

Speaking in a documentary for TLC in the USA titled The Man With Half a Body, his father said: "I just told him to walk behind his mother, because she walks like a duck so just walk like her,"

Most people with his condition die at a young age but he has defied doctors' predictions since he was a child.

"I should be dead now, the doctor gave me until I was 21. I'm 35 now," he said.

He is divorced from his first wife Sarah but is now engaged to Nicky, 33, who has two young children. Kenny has always hoped to be a father.

Easter Bunny roughed up outside NY sweet shop

FISHKILL, N.Y. Police said a woman dressed as the Easter Bunny to promote a Hudson Valley candy shop was slammed to the ground by a man who then ran away. The 46-year-old woman, who was dressed in a white bunny costume, was not seriously hurt in the attack around 5 p.m. Wednesday outside the Alps Sweet Shoppe on Main Street in the village of Fishkill.

State police Investigator George Mohl said the attacker has not been caught.

The man was described as about 17 years old with blonde hair, wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt and a green zippered sweat shirt.

ImageThe police in St. James say they have recovered a hit list which was in the possession of one of two wanted men they killed Thursday night.

The man killed is Richard Lawn
also known as Richie Blacks whom the police say engaged them in a shootout in the Rosemount area Thursday.
According to Commanding Officer for St. James Merrick Watson, a hit list containing the names of four police officers and 32 civilians was taken from Blacks.

Superintendent Watson added that they are combing the list in order to quickly identify those persons on it.

He said a 9mm Berreta pistol was taken from Blacks who was said to be a major player in the Stone Crusher gang.

The Commanding officer says every stone is being turned to rid the parish of the spiraling criminality.

Earlier Friday morning another wanted man, Anthony Christie also known as Boalo was killed by the police at his home in Bottom
Pen where he was an area leader.

President Bharrat Jagdeo of Guyana says the Caribbean is on the verge of bankruptcy as many countries were spending more on servicing external debt and has reiterated his call for urgent debt relief by the international financial institutions.

Jagdeo, who heads a special Caribbean Community (CARICOM) task force to assess the financial crisis in the region, told a media conference recently that the debt situation is worsening.

"The region is heading towards bankruptcy if countries could be declared bankrupt, many of the countries simply cannot pay their way and they can't meet recurring cost and pay their debts," the Guyana head of state warned.

He added that poor productivity and the heavy debt were the main factors contributing to the financial crisis in the region, adding that the situation was further exacerbated by the global financial crisis, the reduction in exports, remittances and tourist arrivals.

Jagdeo's comments came during the CARICOM heads meeting with top officials of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the Inter-American Development Bank in Dominica earlier this month.

World Bank president Robert Zoellick said his organisation was willing to sending experts to the various Caribbean countries to assess their debt management strategies.

Police sources from the St Catherine North Police Division say three of four men who were shot and killed in the Waterloo community of Spanish Town, St Catherine, on Wednesday were gang members.

Head of the division, Super-intendent Assan Thompson, says the dead men were reputed members of the 'Negus' gang which operates in the community.

Huntley Davis, 43, Everald Gordon and a man known only as 'Jimmy', both 50 years old, were shot dead on Wednesday afternoon after a group of armed men pounced upon them while they were in a section of the community.

An 18-year-old man was also reportedly shot and injured during the incident.

The police say the gang is headed by the division's most wanted man and bears his alias name.

'Negus' or 'Handsome', who is from Waterloo Villa, Spanish Town, is wanted for a number of murders, including a double murder in June, 2006.

Negus is also being linked to the flare-up in the Tredegar Park and Gravel Heights communities of the parish. He is being sought in connection with murders committed in both communities.

Mayor says JIO has rejected his proposal

Mayor of Portmore Keith Hinds is calling for the operators of the Portmore leg of Highway 2000 to place five per cent of all monthly gains at the toll into a special fund, which would go towards rehabilitating the roadways in the community.

The mayor proposes that the fund be called the Portmore road development fund, emphasising that it is high time the operators of the roadway show their appreciation to the people of Portmore.

The Portmore leg of Highway 2000, which was officially opened on July 15, 2006, is operated by JamaicaInfrastructure Operators Limited (JIO).

benefits

In a recent JIS news release, Hinds said figures show that approximately 50,000 cars travel between the Spanish Town and Portmore leg of the roadway on a daily basis. "Approximately more than two-thirds come directly out of Portmore. So, what we're saying is look at the benefits you're receiving from Portmore and give back something that at least the citizens can feel comfortable with," he said.

"In other jurisdictions when a toll road interfaces with a community, the way this one interfaces with Portmore, the operators understand that the onus is on them to come to the local authority to see how they can provide assistance for the community that they are benefiting from so greatly," he argued.

no deal

The mayor said that he has been meeting with representatives from the company which manages the roadway to consider his proposal, but so far they have rejected it.

Hinds said another suggestion he has put forward is the construction of a recreational park on the empty lot across from the Portmore Mall, similar to the Emancipation Park in New Kingston. "Those talks are preliminary and I have to be pursuing them, but the truth of the matter is that I believe that we should have some kind of redress from the operators for Portmore," he said.

fix up schools

He is also proposing that the operators look at asphalting the school compounds of a number of the primary schools in Portmore, where dust is a constant nuisance to students. "They could also look at developing beautiful corridors along the roadways in Portmore, getting rid of the shrubs and bushes along the roadways and planting and maintaining beautiful plants and palms," the mayor said.

Hinds also said he would continue to make representation to the toll operators to give back to the community of Portmore.

To celebrate their achievements in recent times, Liv Up Records will be hosting an All-White Boat Ride aboard the Caribbean Queen in Port Royal tomorrow.

Speaking with THE STAR yesterday, Clinton 'Crumbs' Marsh said: "We just a celebrate the blessings from last year 'til now. We a celebrate all the awards and nominations this year."

In February, the label's 'Good Life' rhythm won two awards at the Excellence In Music and Entertainment Awards (EME) for Rhythm of the Year and Compilation of the Year. It also won awards at Passa Passa Anniversary and from Hypezone Magazine.

In addition to the good selections from Stone Love, Alonzo Hawk, Swatch International and Tony Matterhorn, Marsh said the patrons can expect to hear Liv Up Records new rhythm, 'Money Tree'.

"Just expect positive vibrations, a warm environment, bare niceness and just buy out the bar," he said, noting that it will cost $1,000 to attend the event.

Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall continue to give upcoming talent unprecedented access to theindustry. During the course of the competition, the contestants have the opportunity to interact with industry insiders, a privilege they would otherwise not be afforded.

The organisers has intentionally sought to use the competition as an avenue to expose potential winners to a level of professionalism they will need to survive in the fast-paced and hectic dancehall environment. The cast of Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall is a group with decades of experience in the dancehall industry who know how to manage careers and 'buss' new talent.

Among the group of judges is dancehall producer Cordell 'Skatta' Burrell. Since 2001, Scatta has amassed an impressive résumé, highlighted by the simultaneous Billboard Hot 100 charting of four songs on his 'Coolie Dance' rhythm. Skatta is also credited with the launching of careers such as that of Ce'Cile and Aidonia.

comedic veteran

Also on the judging panel is veteran dancehall DJ Professor Nuts. Nuts was dominant in the mid-to-late-90s as a dancehall DJ with a funny side. He still has numerous fans and now, also a TV show to his credit.

Both Scatta and Professor Nuts are dancehall icons and over the past few weeks have imparted valuable knowledge to the contestants on how to be true dancehall stars.

Magnum Kings & Queens of Dancehall's organisers also invite celebrity judges from the dancehall and reggae fraternity to be a part of the live show deliberations. Celebrities who have appeared on the show recently include Konshens, Jah Cure, Ce'Cile and Tifa - all who have gone out of their way to guide the young princes and princesses on the right path by giving them advice from stage presentation and proper use of the microphone to voice projection.

Ce'Cile, who appeared on the last live show, believes Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall is the best place for dancehall hopefuls to hone their craft. "I thoroughly enjoyed the show and the contestants have amazing talent. This show is the best way I see for young artistes to hone their craft and prepare themselves for the big stage," she said.

new rulers

Jah Cure, who sat in the guest judge seat the week before, also believes the show is a good idea. "Tanto Black, Chozenn, Gallawas, Press Fyah, Reggae Queen, these are artistes that I will be looking for in a few years. I was humbled when asked to be a guest judge on the show and I am always amazed at the quantity and quality of the talent in Jamaica; and a show like this can only help the young ones, who will take over from us, be better prepared for the music business."

The winners of the Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall, selected by the viewers, will be entitled to a professionally produced video and a single, which should put them on a path to true dancehall stardom. The voted King and Queen will also receive $1,000,000 each towards the development of their careers.

There is only one place to watch Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall and it's on TVJ, with live broadcast from Weekenz Bar and Bistro in Kingston at 9:30 p.m. tonight!

WASHINGTON, USA (AP) The United States government is refining its terror-screening policy to focus on specific terror threats and not travellers' nationalities.

The new policy replaces a security requirement put in place after the attempted bombing of a jetliner en route to Detroit on Christmas Day that singled out people from 14 countries that have been home to terrorists. It also expands the pool of foreign travellers targeted for extra screening beyond those whose names are on a US terror watch list.

us-security_w370.jpg

The changes, announced yesterday by the Homeland Security Department, come after a three-month review of counterterrorism policies ordered by President Barack Obama in the wake of the near miss attack.

Under the refined policy, a person travelling to the US would be stopped if he or she fits a specific description of a potential terrorist provided by US intelligence officials -- even if the suspect's name is unknown.

Currently, passengers' names are compared to names on US terror watch lists. If air carriers have a potential match to a watch list, the passenger is either banned from flying to the US or subjected to extra screening such as a full-body pat-down before boarding the airplane.

For example, if the US has intelligence about a Nigerian man between the ages of 22 and 32 whom officials believe is a threat or a known terrorist, under the new policy all Nigerian men within that age range would receive extra screening before they are allowed to fly to the US.

If intelligence later shows that the suspect is not a terrorist, the extra screening for others matching the description would be lifted.

SEOUL, N Korea (AFP) -- The United States will work closely with China to try to bring North Korea back to nuclear disarmament talks, a senior US diplomat said yesterday, amid reports the North's leader may soon visit Beijing.

"We are closely in touch with China," Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said during a visit to South Korea.

"We will ask them to assist us in efforts to strongly encourage North Korea to return expeditiously to the six-party talks."

Seoul's presidency said this week there was a "high level of possibility" the North's leader Kim Jong-Il would soon visit China, the reclusive regime's neighbour and closest economic and political partner.

Campbell said reports of the trip are "just a speculation at this juncture".

China declined on Thursday to confirm a visit that could revive the disarmament talks which it chairs, and which also group the two Koreas, Russia, Japan and the United States.

Campbell arrived yesterday from India for a two-day trip for talks with Vice Foreign Minister Shin Kak-Soo and chief nuclear negotiator Wi Sung-Lac.

"We are continuing close coordination and cooperation on diplomatic efforts to try to get North Korea to return to the six-party talks," he said.

Campbell said the United States and South Korea recognise "the importance of America-extended deterrence".

"We will remain very strongly committed to conservation of peace and stability here," he said.

Communist North Korea angrily quit the nuclear disarmament talks in April last year and vowed to restart production of weapons-grade plutonium. It carried out its second atomic weapons test the following month.

The North says it will not return to dialogue until United Nations sanctions are lifted and until the United States commits to holding talks on a formal peace treaty.

MONTEGO BAY, St James Fire yesterday gutted the barracks at Montego Bays Barnett Street Police Station, leaving some 30 members of the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF) without accommodation.

Thirty-three firefighters from the Freeport and Ironshore fire stations worked over an hour using seven fire units to extinguish the blaze that started shortly after 8:00 am the origin of which was not determined up until late yesterday.

barnett-street-fire-2_w370.jpg

Dolphin Doeman, acting superintendent of the St James division of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, praised his charges for confining the blaze to the barracks, popularly called Fourteen, and courageously putting out the blaze.

However, he complained that his team was challenged by two defective fire hydrants near the scene, as well as curious motorists who parked in close proximity to the blaze, hampering the firefighters mobility.

No one was hurt, but police lost their uniforms and personal belongings. One policeman said the blaze claimed over half-a-million dollars which he had borrowed from a bank to purchase a motor car.

He said that the vendor had sold the car in question to another buyer early Monday afternoon, causing him to hold on to the money with the intention of purchasing another car.

Commandant in charge of the St James ISCF Rupert Rushton noted that the displaced personnel will have to be relocated to the Freeport Police Station where they were originally located before recently moving their operations to Barnett Street.

Montego Bay Mayor Charles Sinclair used the opportunity to reiterate his call for the construction of a fire station in the second city, as well as the replacement of a fireboat, which has not worked for years.

We have been without a fire station for some time, said the mayor. The fire station must be constructed. Must! There are no two ways about that. We cant have firemen and women operating in two separate locations part of it operating in Fort Street and the next set operating out of Freeport. That cannot continue to work!.

He also expressed the need for a fireboat, not only for the cruise ships that call on Montego Bay, but for the vessels that are docked in the city.

I have called on the Office of the Prime Minister, ever since I assumed the position. The fireboat must be brought back into service, he said.

BRUSSELS, Belgium (CMC) -- Usain Bolt, Tyson Gay, and Asafa Powell, the three fastest humans of all-time, will face the starter for the men's 100 metres at the IAAF Diamond League meet on August 27 here.

This followed confirmation on Thursday that Bolt will attend the Memorial Van Damme for one of the most anticipated races of the season in the King Baudouin Stadium.

asafa-bolt-gay_w370.jpg

"To have these three world-class athletes on our 100m starting list is one of the highlights in the history of the Memorial Van Damme," said meet director Wilfried Meert.

"There is no doubt that the athletic fans will respond to this, and we expect the stadium to be sold out faster than ever before."

The Memorial Van Damme is the final stop on the new IAAF Diamond League circuit, and so far is only one of the 14 meets at which all three sprinters will run.

Bolt won the gold in the final of the 100 at last year's World Championships in Berlin, where Gay grabbed silver, and Powell copped bronze in the fastest 100 in history.

The Jamaican sprint megastar set a new world record of 9.58 seconds, while Gay became the fastest-ever American athlete at the distance, and Powell increased his world-record number of sub-10 second races.

All three are IAAF Diamond League Ambassadors and they will gather in Brussels for a rerun of this sizzling final.

Gay and Powell will have their hands full -- if all three men last through the season and are fully fit -- since Bolt also holds the meet record of 9.77secs in a duel with Powell two years ago.

Last year, Bolt also ran an astonishing 200 in 19.57, the fourth fastest time over the distance in history.

But Powell cannot be discounted. The Memorial Van Damme is one of the Jamaican's most favourite meets.

He is the most victorious sprinter on the Brussels track after winning the event no less than five times. His personal best of 9.84 in Brussels dates back three years.

American Gay also has fond memories of the Brussels track. He made his debut four years ago in a blistering 19.79.

MONTEGO BAY, St James --The St James police yesterday said they found a hit list with the names of 32 civilians and four cops on the body of an

alleged gangster.

According to the St James Police Divisional commander, Superintendent Merrick Watson, the alleged gangster was one of two men killed by members of the security forces between Holy Thursday and the wee hours of yesterday.

"For security purposes we cannot show the list here... the intention is to find these individuals (on the list) and question them and inform them that their names are on a hit list," Superintendent Watson told members of the media at a press conference at the Freeport Police Station late yesterday.

The two men killed by the police have been identified as Richard Lawn, aka 'Richie Blacks', and Anthony 'Bolo' Christie.

According to Watson, the police were conducting an operation in the Rose Mount Meadows section of the parish at about 9:30 pm Thursday when Lawn, who was described as a "top-tier" member of the reputed Stone Crusher Gang, traded bullets with them.

After the shooting subsided, the list and one Beretta 9mm pistol, loaded with six 9mm cartridges were recovered from his body.

Christie was also killed in a shoot-out yesterday with members of the security team that was conducting an operation in the gritty inner-city community of Bottom Pen. A SIG Sauer .45 pistol loaded with five .45 cartridges was allegedly taken from him.

But in the wake of the killing, family members and other members of the Bottom Pen community staged a demonstration in the community in protest over what they said was the cold-*lo**ed murder of Christie by the police.

Perils of "chexting" hit spotlight

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - You might like texting, frown upon sexting, but now comes "chexting" -- and it can lead to big trouble. Just ask Tiger Woods and Jesse James.

Oddly Enough

Golf superstar Woods and TV celebrity James, who is married to Oscar-winning actress Sandra Bullock, have seen their lives unravel amid revelations of cheating on their spouses, in part by arranging liaisons via text messages.

Their affairs have spawned a new word in pop culture, chexting, and raised the question of whether it really is cheating on a spouse. The experts say, you bet it is.

"It's lipstick on the cellular -- digital proof that becomes evidence you've been unfaithful," says Peter Dedman of Predicto Mobile, the largest paid mobile community in America.

In today's digital age, where cell phones come equipped with their own typing keyboards separate from the number pads, texting has become more popular than e-mailing for some, and sending a text from a small phone can be done almost anywhere.

It is instant gratification and contact, but for those who have a hard time staying faithful, texting has become medium to facilitate their cheating.

Los Angeles family law attorney Stacy D. Phillips says she's seeing more and more divorce cases involving spouses being unfaithful through technology -- including Internet chat rooms, instant messages and texts.

Part of the allure, she says, is that the "chext" is not finished when both parties stop sending messages.

"The person can keep re-reading the texts throughout the day, getting titillated all over again," she said.

Victoria Namkung, co-founded of the website MyWorstDate.com -- where people submit their worst dating experiences -- says half of the website's submissions involve issues of betrayal through digital technology.

THE ERRANT CHEXT

She cites the story of a woman who was on her fourth date with a man who excused himself to use the restroom. Moments later, she received a text from the mens room with a picture he had taken of himself in a compromising position.

The woman was horrified, but no more than the man when he learned what happened. He apologized and just as she was about to accept his mea culpa, he admitted: "I sent it to the wrong person in my address book!"

The date soon ended.

But if you send the right chext to the right person it is probably titillating, which keeps an affair going.

"It's giving them a rush - it's exciting," said clinical psychologist and certified sex therapist Stella Resnick. "The fact that they are not telling anybody else and sneaking around on their partner adds to the excitment."

Resnick likens this behavior to that of a teenager rebelling against their parent.

"If you're married, going against your spouse is asserting your independence. That feels sexy. If you're under somebody else's control, breaking out of that gives a feeling of exhilaration and power."

But don't be fooled into thinking you're safe. If you've sexted and chexted, you might soon be "exted" by your spouse.

Dedman said one of the first places a suspicious spouse may look for evidence of cheating is a cell phone contact list.

And deleting a chext doesn't mean it is no longer stored in a phone's memory, said Michelle Jerson, who hosts a radio relationship show on New Jersey 101.5.

"There's software you can download to retrieve erased data," she said.

Britain's most popular lie: 'sorry I had no mobile phone signal'

Britain's most popular lie has been disclosed, with one in four people admitting using "sorry I had no signal" when returning a missed mobile phone call, a survey found.

Woman on a mobile phone: Britain's most popular: 'sorry I had no mobile phone signal'
Women were better liars than men, the study found, with the most popular lie being 'sorry I had no signal'. Picture posed by a model.Photo: ALAMY

Researchers found the average Briton tells on average four lies every day or almost 1500 every year.

Almost one in six men admitted they were most likely to lie to their wife or girlfriend, on average at least twice a day.

The most popular lie was saying you had no mobile phone signal, with one in four people admitting regularly using the little white lie. It usually came after they hit the "ignore" button when their mobile rang.

One in three Britons have lied about their weight, a quarter fibbed about the amount of debt they are in and 30 per cent have bent the truth about the amount of exercise they do.

Kissing or spending the night with another person emerged as the worst lie to tell while one in five males admitted to lying to their girlfriend to go to the pub or watch sport.

Almost a quarter of blokes have told their partner they look good in an outfit, despite thinking the opposite.

More than a fifth have even lied about flirting with another woman.

More than 40 per cent of women owned up to lying about how much new clothes actually cost while 30 per cent have fibbed about how much they've had to drink.

Three quarters of people think women are better liars. The research found 46 per cent of girls have been caught lying, compared to 58 of men.

The second most common fib is ''I haven't got any cash on me'' when asked for money by tramps, beggars and Big Issue sellers.

''Nothing's wrong I'm fine'' came third followed by ''You look lovely'' and ''Nice to see you''.

Modern technology emerged as the instigator of many lies with ''I didn't get your text'' in 18th, ''Our server was down'' in 20th and ''My battery died'' in 26th place.

Other lies to make the top ten included ''I'll give you a ring'', ''We're just good friends'' and ''We'll have to meet up soon''.

''I'm on my way'' and ''No, your bum doesn't look big in that'' completed the top ten.

Men who tell the most fibs, coming out with five every day compared who women who lie just three times.

A spokesman for OnePoll, which carried out the research of 4,300 adults, said: "As a nation we are obsessed with trying to be nice and not upsetting people.

"Often little white lies can paper over what we actually want to say.

"Most of these were considered either completely harmless or tactically necessary depending on the situation in which they are delivered."

He added: "It was sad to see a string of compliments in the top 50, but once again in many cases perhaps it is better to flatter with a fib than destroy someone with the truth."

Colo. fire captain arrested during emergency call

Prosecutors in Colorado are deciding whether to file charges against a fire captain who was arrested and handcuffed during an emergency call.

It's the latest twist in a dispute between city officials in Leadville and the Lake County sheriff.

City officials say Dailey went to the sheriff's office to help after someone called an ambulance for a woman with a neck injury. They say deputies arrested Dailey after he refused their orders to leave.

Fire Capt. Dan Dailey was released about an hour after his March 27 arrest.

City officials defended Dailey's decision to go to the scene. Sheriff Ed Holte (HOLT) was out of the office Friday and didn't respond to a message.

The city and sheriff have been at odds over who should provide emergency protection outside Leadville.

The Most Foolish Tax Write-Offs Ever Attempted

Witchcraft, Sperm Donation, Arson top TurboTax List of Misguided Efforts to Avoid More Taxes

  • image6356607g.jpg
(CBS) Witchcraft, sperm donation, arson.

The makers of TurboTax contend they aren't pulling your leg - the tax preparation software company has compiled what they say are real examples of foolish deductions people have tried to claim when filing their taxes.

In honor of April Fools' Day, Thursday, TurboTax provided their list of the 12 Most Foolish Tax Write-Offs Ever Attempted, and the ludicrous reasoning behind them.

Including arson and witchcraft,
the list provided to CBS station KPIX by the public relations firm for TurboTax also included free beer, bribery, sex toys and ostrich depreciation.

Here's the list in more detail:

Sperm donation

In 2008, New York City resident William Magdalin cleverly tried to squeeze through a legal loophole that allows the deduction of sperm donation costs. Unfortunately for Megdalin, the U.S. First Circuit court of appeals upheld an earlier court decision to strike down his scheme. The court decision reads, in part: "The various expenses incurred by petitioner [Magdalin] were not for the treatment of any underlying medical condition suffered by the taxpayer; as noted, he stipulated that he was not infertile and that his previous children had been produced by natural processes..."

Witchcraft

In an article on bizarre tax breaks from around the world, London's DailyMail newspaper reported on Netherlands resident Margarita Rongen. She was dubbed the "tax-certified witch" who successfully wrote off the costs of such training as "healing with herbs and stones, making potions, divination and fortune telling with crystal balls and hieroglyphs" as qualified education expenses in 2005.

Free beer

Giveaways are common sales tactics, and it may seem ordinary that a business owner would try deducting the costs of running them. But perhaps no giveaway was as destined for IRS scrutiny as free beer, which a gas station owner reportedly offered up to his customers instead of trading stamps. Amazingly, the alcoholic deduction withstood legal challenges as a legitimate and defensible business expense.

Arson

A Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania furniture store owner hired an arsonist to burn his building down after trying and failing to sell the business. He might have gotten away with it if not for what he included on that year's income tax return. The disgruntled shopkeeper received (and reported on his tax return) a $500,000 payment from his insurance company, but he also "wrote off the $10,000 "consulting fee" he paid the arsonist." Once the IRS caught on, the shopkeeper got slapped with over $6,000 in fines and both he and the arsonist got sent off to prison for insurance fraud.

Bribery

Bribery was once a legally sanctioned, tax-deductible activity in Germany. While not as many people as you might expect actually used the deduction (because both the source and recipient of the bribe had to identify themselves) the controversial write-off received a steady barrage of criticism. Eventually, German politicians opted to repeal it.

Fallout shelter

A man built a full-fledged, underground nuclear fallout shelter in his backyard during the U.S.-Soviet Union arms race. His income tax return for that year tried to deduct the costs of building the shelter as a "preventative medicine expense," but the IRS immediately put the kibosh on the attempted write-off.

Sex toys

Australia took the decidedly unusual step in 2006 of allowing prostitutes, strippers and other members of "the sex industry" to deduct the cost of buying sex toys.

Clarinet lessons

The Houston Chronicle reported the story of how playing the clarinet demonstrably lessens the pain of overbite, an agonizing tooth defect. And so, parents have been permitted to write off the costs of clarinet lessons as a legitimate medical expense. As the Chronicle explained, legally deductible medical expenses "involve diagnosis, cure, treatment or prevention of a disease or health condition for you, a spouse or a dependent."

Breast Implants

Few things epitomize the idea of a ridiculous income tax write-off more than breast implants. But Cynthia Hess (better known by her stage alias of "Chesty Love") defended her deduction all the way to the United States Tax Court and prevailed. The court conceded that since Hess earned her living by stripping, breast implants did satisfy the Internal Revenue Code requirement that business expenses be "ordinary and necessary" for one's line of work.

Navajo healing ceremonies

Navajo healing ceremonies, which attempt to eradicate pain and curses using various chants and songs, can be lawfully deducted from income taxes. The cost of holding or participating in such ceremonies are tax-deductible provided that "it was prescribed for a medical purpose or to alleviate a condition," according to tax attorney Donna LeValley. Navajo healing ceremonies aren't the only "alternative" treatment options that potentially qualify as tax write-offs, as electric shock, whirlpool baths and hydrotherapy have all been lawfully deducted in the past.

Cat food

A junkyard-owning husband and wife routinely sprinkled cat food around the premises to tempt stray cats into hanging around. Their reason? The cats "took care of snakes and rats on the property, making the place safer for customers." Naturally, this attempted deduction did not pass unchallenged. But when the couple made their case that the cat food had been instrumental to keeping dangerous rodents away from their life-sustaining business, the IRS allowed the deduction to stand.

Ostrich depreciation

Businesses are used to depreciating standard equipment like computers, truck fleets and buildings. So, an ostrich farmer from Louisiana submitted a tax return that wrote off the depreciated value of his ostrich. Odd as it may sound, farmers are indeed allowed by the Internal Revenue Code to depreciate the value of their livestock provided they are being used for breeding (rather than producing food products for sale).

Pa. lottery pays $7.77 million after 7-7-7-7 hits

PHILADELPHIA The Pennsylvania Lottery proved to be seventh heaven for thousands of lottery players this week.

The lottery paid out a total of $7.77 million after the number 7-7-7-7 came up in the Big 4 drawing Wednesday. More than 3,100 tickets had the winning numbers. They won either $2,500 or $5,000, depending on whether the buyer wagered 50 cents or $1.

That set of numbers has only been a winner twice since 1980. The last set of quadruple numbers to win was 2-2-2-2 in September 2008.

Woman, 82, crashes into salon, gets her hair done

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. An 82-year-old woman who accidentally crashed her car through the front window of a southwest Michigan salon stuck around afterward for an appointment to get her hair done.

Authorities said Marion Zock was parking her Ford Fusion on Thursday outside Classic Hair Design in Kent County's Plainfield Township, near Grand Rapids, when she stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake.

Two people were injured, including an employee who returned to work after treatment and a girl with a bruised arm.

Zock told WOOD-TV her foot slipped from the brake. She's a regular customer and says she was "so embar****ed."

Stylist Kristi Dochod told WWMT-TV the crash sounded like an explosion. The salon stayed open as the car was removed, and is open during repairs.

MAN ALIVE ... Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia thwarts Barcelona as the La Liga giants impress Harry Redknapp

HARRY REDKNAPP is not scared of the Champions League despite seeing Barcelona play football from another planet.

The Spurs boss reckons Barca's display against Arsenal was the finest he has ever seen.

But he still thinks his side are ready to play on stages like the Nou Camp.

Redknapp said: "I've never seen anything in my life like Barcelona the other night.

"I've never seen an opening 20 minutes like that. That was the best ever. For an an away team to go and do that... they could have been four or five up after 20 minutes.

harry redknapp
BARCA TRIBUTE ... Redknapp

"It was incredible. They were on a different planet - a completely different level.

"I've never seen anyone play like that, the way they moved the ball and pressed.

"It was unreal. We played them in a friendly last year and they usedtheir reserves but they were still fantastic.

"You'd love the opportunity to pit yourself against them."

Redknapp should welcome back hamstring injury victim Jermain Defoe today as Spurs bid to finish fourth in the Premier League and earn a place at Europe's top table.

He added: "I wouldn't write off Aston Villa but fourth is between us, Manchester City and Liverpool. If we do it, that would be great.

"We would be ready. We have a good squad when everyone is fit."

Redknapp, whose team face Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea before the end of the season, said: "It's going to be tight because our fixtures are tough. Anyone having a good run with four or five games on the spin could make it.

"We've just won five on the bounce. If somebody can do that, that club will be there. It's going to be that close."

Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent has a point to prove after a frustrating end to his Spurs career.

Redknapp once said his wife Sandra could have scored a chance Bent missed.

The Spurs boss added: "It was time for him to move. But he has certainly picked it up at Sunderland and put himself in the running for a World Cup place.

Forty-one year old Reggae artiste Lewin Brown whose stage name is Louie Culture has been shot and injured.

The artiste who resides in Windsor Forrest in Portland was shot in Priestman's River.

The entertainer was shot on Friday afternoon just after 1:30 at Priestman's River, Black Rock.

The operator of a tyre shop Anthony Taylor was also shot in the incident.

Reports are that the two were seated at the tyre shop when a blue Subaru drove by before making a U-turn and returning.

A man alighted from the car and walked in the direction of the two men with his hand behind his back.

The man then pulled a firearm from behind and fired several shots.

The two men were hit and rushed to the Port Antonio Hospital.

The gunman escaped in a White Subaru car.

Mr. Taylor was grazed on his right thigh and fell and injured his right elbow.

Louis Culture was hit in the upper left arm just above the elbow and on the lower arm.

Both were treated at the hospital.

Last Friday Louis Culture was released from police custody after he was questioned by the police in a shooting incident at Hartford in the parish.

The police say his car was involved in the shooting incident.

The police theorise that this shooting may be in reprisal for that incident.

In that incident a group of men were playing dominoes at a bar near Hartford when a man approached them armed with a gun.

It is alleged that the man fired one shot, which grazed a man on one of his arm before hitting another man.

Both men were taken to the Port Antonio Hospital, where they were treated and released.

Following the shooting, the police issued a warrant for the reggae artiste, who they believe could assist with their investigation.

The artiste turned himself in the following day and was arrested.

He was later released without charge.

Image The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) on Wednesday had assets seized by bailiffs attempting to recover more than  12,000 pounds owed for the Reggae Boyz 2006 tour to England.

The money is owed to NVA Management Limited, for organising the game played at Old Trafford.

Upon receiving notice of possible action by NVA
more than six months ago, JFF General Secretary Horace Reid said the JFF tried negotiating, but it has not worked.

Office furniture and appliances were among the assets taken.

"Hopefully it will not affect the ability of the Federation to function because as you would appreciate we have very, very important information that is stored on our computers and it is going to affect other things, so let's see what happens," Mr. Reid said.

The JFF also owes the English FA 135,000 pounds for that match, but have been allowed to defer payment until after the World Cup in June.

There was damning testimony on Wednesday at the trial of former Junior Minister Kern Spencer who is accused of corruption.

The court began playing the controversial tape recordings between Mr. Spencer and the chief prosecution witness, Rodney Chin.

After weeks of waiting the court finally began hearing the conversations which were captured by Mr. Chin, a former accused turned state witness.

Government prosecutors say the recordings linked the politician to the Cuban Light bulb affair.

Although the quality of the recordings left much to be desired, in November 2007 Mr. Spencer is heard asking Mr. Chin to sign a letter on behalf of Universal Management Development Limited (UMD), one of the companies which was responsible for the distribution of the Cuban lightbulbs.

Mr. Spencer wanted to submit the quotations for UMD to the Auditor General after the authorities began digging into the connections of companies involved in the Cuban Lightbulb programme.

Mr. Chin, who said he was fronting for Mr. Spencer in establishing the company, is heard on the tape cautioning Mr. Spencer to be careful as Mr. Spencer wanted him to "back date" the letter head of the company to August 2006.

Mr. Chin is heard telling Mr. Spencer that this is "fraudulent".

He is also heard telling Mr. Spencer that he had to be careful as the authorities would be looking for fraud in examining the letter.

Mr. Chin told the hearing that he was concerned about this aspect as the UMD was not a registered company in August 2006.

The tapes revealed that Mr. Spencer repeatedly called Mr. Chin between November and December 2007 when the authorities and the Office of the Contractor General began probing the Cuban Light bulb programme.

The men were heard discussing ways to cover their tracks if confronted by the authorities.

On one of the recordings, Mr. Spencer was heard asking Mr. Chin whether he had heard from JLP General Secretary Karl Samuda after the Prime Minister was given a copy of the Auditor General's report.

Mr. Chin told him he did not want to discuss that issue over the phone.

The men were also heard speaking about hiring lawyers as the light bulb scandal became a frequent news item.

Wednesday Mr. Chin maintained that the UMD and the Caribbean Communications Media Network, which were mentioned on the tapes, were owned by Mr. Spencer.

Government prosecutors will continue playing the tapes when the trial resumes Thursday.
Shameful: Racist Mayor Irene Holmes Trying Hard To Keep Black People Out Of Her Town! (Fired An Officer For Not Racially Profiling Drivers)

"A former chief of the Ladue Police Department has sued the posh St. Louis suburb, claiming he lost his job after refusing to seek out black drivers for traffic stops. Larry White also says a city councilman told him to look the other way if Ladue residents were driving drunk or otherwise breaking the law. White filed suit Monday in St. Louis County Circuit Court against the city of Ladue, Mayor Irene Holmes and members of the City Council. In his petition, White alleges Holmes told him she wanted âthose peopleâ to be stopped and pulled out of their cars so that others would see what happened and avoid coming to Ladue. White said he understood "those people" to mean black drivers."

A 15-year-old Trenton girl was under arrest Wednesday for selling her 7-year-old sister for sex, handing her money and watching as the young girl was gang raped. The teen was said to have willingly engaged in sex with multiple men for cash herself.

Woman wishes Happy Meal a happy birthday

A Colorado woman recently celebrated the the first birthday of a burger and fries she's been keeping on her office bookshelf.

I bought a Happy Meal and then placed it on my office shelf, right behind me and my computer. It sat on my shelf for a year as a silent witness to our fast food industry, wrote Joann Bruso on her blog, BabyBites.info.

Bruso is the author of the book Baby Bites: Transforming a Picky Eater into a Healthy Eater.

She said the Happy Meal, despite being left out for an entire year, hasn't decomposed one bit.

My husband worried that when the food began to decompose, there would be a terrible odour in our home. He also worried the food would attract ants and mice. He questioned my sanity, she wrote.

But the food never got smelly or mouldy at all, she wrote.

The hamburger has shrunk a bit and still resembles a hockey puck. Yet, the French fries look yummy enough to eat. I never had an odour problem, after a couple of weeks, I couldnt even smell the fries.

Bruso, who dedicates her time to convincing parents not to feed junk food to their picky children, said this experiment proves that Happy Meals aren't a healthy snack for kids.

The next time youre tempted to purchase a Happy Meal for your child, think about these photos, she said.

Food is broken down into its essential nutrients in our bodies and turned into fuel. Our children grow strong bodies, when they eat real food. Flies ignore a Happy Meal and microbes dont decompose it, then your childs body cant properly metabolize it either.

A spokesperson for McDonald's Restaurants of Canada said that the blog post should not be taken too seriously, though.

"This blog appears to be nothing more than another urban legend."

"McDonald's hamburger patties are made with 100% pure beef," she added. "Our hamburger buns are made from North American-grown wheat flour and baked locally to ensure quality and freshness."

MADRID
(Reuters) - Flight attendants owed up to nine months' wages by a grounded Spanish airline have posed nude for a calendar to draw attention to their plight, one of the cabin crew turned models said on Wednesday. Oddly Enough

The calendar, numerous excerpts of which appeared in the Spanish media, shows the Air Comet attendants, all female, posing provocatively in and outside airline cabins, and in one case on top of a jet turbine.

"We are just demanding our rights to receive what is ours, we each have eight or nine months of unpaid salaries," attendant Adriana Ricardo, who appears in the calendar, told Reuters.

Air Comet, run by the embattled chairman of Spain's main employers' association CEOE, Gerardo Ferran, filed for administration in December after a British court impounded nine of its aircraft at the request of German bank HSH Nordbank.

Criminals beware! Google is watching.

A savvy Florida sheriff's deputy used Google Earth to track down and arrest a man on charges of illegally dumping a boat near the man's home.

After finding an 18-foot boat dumped in an undeveloped subdivision about 15 miles north of Pensacola, according to the Pensacola News Journal, Deputy Gregory Barnes consulted satellite images provided by the virtual globe.

Google Earth shows archived satellite and aerial images of communities across the world. In this case, it showed the previous location of the boat.

Barnes used Google Earth to look at the surrounding area and allegedly saw a fuzzy image of the vessel at Dwight Foster's home.

Police say Foster, 57, admitted dumping the boat, according to the paper. Officials say it cost just $18 to properly dispose of the boat at a landfill.

Foster now faces a $5,000 fine and up to five years in prison.
