NEW YORK (AP) -- Rapper DMX says he's been ripped off for years by a company hired to collect his song royalties, but he's been behind bars so much that he only recently realised the problem.

The platinum-selling but troubled hip-hop artiste -- who's currently in an Arizona jail -- said in a lawsuit filed Monday that Rich Kid Entertainment Inc and related companies paid him nothing while collecting royalties on some of his most popular work. The company also made deals letting record labels reproduce his work without telling him, the lawsuit claims.

No telephone number could be found for Englewood, New Jersey-based Rich Kid. Its president didn't immediately respond to a fax sent to a possible number for him.DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, scored such hits as Get At Me Dog and Party Up in the 1990s. He also appeared in films including 2000's Romeo Must Die and 2003's Cradle 2 the Grave.

But the 39-year-old rapper has repeatedly been arrested and jailed during the last decade. He's currently serving a six-month term in a Phoenix jail for violating probation by failing a drug test, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

He was jailed there for nearly three months last year on animal cruelty, theft and drug-possession charges. Some stemmed from an August 2007 raid in which authorities found three dead dogs, guns, ammunition and drug paraphernalia at his suburban home.

His other run-ins with the law include pleading guilty in 2008 to attempted cocaine and marijuana possession in Miami, being arrested and released in London in 2006 after police said he refused to put on a seat belt and became abusive on an airplane, and pleading guilty in a 2004 incident in which he posed as an undercover federal agent and crashed his sport-utility vehicle through a security gate at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

"From 2000 through 2008, (DMX) was in and out of jail and changed representatives numerous times. These were some of the factors contributing to any delay" in bringing the case, the lawsuit notes.

It says Rich Kid has stolen from him for nearly a decade, but he didn't know that until last year.

Police have arrested a common-law couple who have been accused of taking two primary school girls to their home and sexually assaulting them.

They were picked up by the St Catherine North police yesterday, after one of the girls revealed how she was forced to have sex with the man and give oral sex to the woman.

Police confirmed the couple's arrest yesterday but declined to give further details, saying the matter was very sensitive and further investigations were being done.

But residents, after learning about the alleged incidents, revealed to THE STAR how shocked they were on hearing how the girls were abused.

Information reaching THE STAR is that one of the girls told the police that the woman opened her legs and told her to try and let her common-law man insert his penis into her. The child said when it was obvious that she could not accommodate him and she began to scream and cry, the woman covered her mouth and told her to bear the pain and try to take it.

STD

It is also alleged that the woman would sometimes order the girls to give her oral sex. It is understood that it was only after it was discovered that one of the girls had a sexually transmitted infection and was questioned she revealed what happened.

The residents said it was possible that more children of the community may have been abused, as the woman, who has spent a lot of time with children, accommodated many of them at her house.

It is understood that some parents have already started to question their children about what they did when they went to the couple's house.

Police hunt school robber

The St Catherine North police are trying to ascertain the identity of a brazen gunman who pulled off a broad daylight robbery at St Jago Preparatory school in Spanish Town on Wednesday.

The incident reportedly occurred during the school's fun day.

Police reports said about 2 p.m., the robber went on the school compound and ventured into the canteen, brandished a gun and ordered the cashier to hand over all the money she had.

The cashier complied and man took the money and walked off the compound.

An alarm was raised but by then the barefaced thug was long gone.

A man accused of assaulting his girlfriend during an argument about overnight food that was to be shared between them, was taken before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Kevin Mitchell, a 26-year-old chef from Kintyre, St Andrew, pleaded not guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm and malicious destruction of property.

The court was told that on April 22, about 10:15 a.m., the accused and the complainant had an argument about overnight food. It is alleged that during the argument, the accused punched the complainant in the head, used a scissors to hit her on the head and reportedly threw a pan full of coins at her.

It is also alleged that the accused destroyed several items inside the house.

When the matter was mentioned in court, Mitchell denied the allegations. Both he and the complainant, however, agreed to receive counselling from the Dispute Resolution Foundation.

They are to return to court on June 3. The accused man's bail was extended.

Eppi Rebel 'kicks' Kartel's Clarks

Friday, April 30, 2010

New artiste Eppi Rebel out of Montego Bay has taken the brave step of counteracting Vybz Kartel's hit single Clarks. The artiste whose career has recently been lifted off the ground, says the move is not a 'diss' to Kartel but a humorous jab at the deejay. The song is called Kickers and features singer Dannella.

According to Rebel, "The song is a hit song and the tune is going out for the youths from Mobay. A Polo Ralph Lauren we wear and Kartel dis wi brand so wi affi tek it to him. It's nothing personal to Kartel it's just music and we a tell them seh the younger generation seh Kickers. Over the years we grow up in Clarks but the younger generation has moved on."

The song seeks to promote the 'Kickers' brand of shoes over the traditional 'Clarks'. Eppi states that while Clarks has been the traditional favourite of many the more expensive 'Kickers' are the choice of young Montegonians.

The track is hard-hitting with lines such as Twenty five thousand dollar fi one, if u no know /Papcaan a no Montegonian. Dannella also has wicked lyrics in the song and quips: Toothbrush a fi brush teeth, member seh Clarks no have gingivitis...Gaza Slim fi go learn proper hygiene, toothbrush no brush fi shoes cause that's unclean. This in response to the line in Kartel's song which says, Toothbrush get off the dust fast.

With lyrics like these aimed that the high-riding Gaza clan, it's no surprise that this song has been wrecking the airwaves on radio stations all over Jamaica.

Originally from Tucker, Eppi now calls Salt Spring in Montego Bay his base. The deejay, has been writing songs since 2003 and has his own label called Rebel Productions. Eppi believes that artistes like him from Montego Bay have good lyrics and songs and should get a chance to show what they are made of.

"A couple years now wi a try a ting inna Bay and a nuff yute still deh yah fi buss so wi glad seh di people dem love the song."

He continued, "When we were young we could not afford shoes now that we can we buy, we go for only the best and its only natural that we sing about it."

Eppi says he feels that he had to represent Mobay because some of the youths in his area were a bit upset that Kartel would 'diss' Polo, a brand that they hold dear.

"We hear Kartel song an the youth dem did tense fi a while so wi just address the situation. A Polo wi wear and we do agree that real bad man no model inna shorts, but when we wear wi Polo a no model wi a model a wear wi a wear it," Eppi Rebel explains.

Like most artistes, he says he is also looking to take his music to an international level. "Wi no only can deejay about shoes, we have other things that we can deejay about. We have several songs out there but because of the Clarks ting this is the song that jumped out at the people and we are glad for the recognition," he said.

Rebel plans to release his new girls tune, How u look good so later this month and says the song will show his versatility.

ATI/Dream weekend promises bigger and better fun this summer, with both party series back on for Emancipation weekend.

Scheduled for July 30-August 2 in Negril, both Dream weekend and ATI (Appleton Tempation Isle) are looking to provide patrons with an even better party package than last year. For Dream weekend which was initiated last year by the 'Dream Team' of promoters, the same line up of events are back with Absinthe, Twisted Spiritz, Xtremme Wet N Wild, Daydreams, Beer Vibes, Yush and Smirnoff Xclusive.

According to Alex Chin, promoter for ATI, the line-up hasn't been officially announced but most of the parties will hopefully be back this year with the inclusion of one of Ocho Rios' signature parties - Impy Skimpy. For both party series last year was another good year of partying.

money's worth

Chin commented, "we thought it was good, thought we gave the people their money's worth and all the parties were excellent, just expect the regular professionalism from all the parties. The ATI parties stand out in the vibes they put in, they are the original set of parties in Negril and that goes a long way." Last year there were 4000-5000 patrons at each event, said Chin.

Last year was the first year for the newly created Dream Weekend and according to Dream promoter Kamal Bankay it was beyond expectations.

He said, "I was overwhelmed by two things, the demand for the brand; We always knew we had great events that could provide a great experience but it was beyond what we expected. The feedback was great, everyone was like 'yo it was amazing.' Parties like Wet N Wild saw 6,000 patrons, Beer Vibes got 5,000 and Daydreams 4,500 so it was good."

Both events are planning big launch parties for the summer and will host events leading up to the Emancipation Weekend.

For ATI, Chin said there will be pre-Negril events like Xtatic Fridays in Ocho Rios, Quench and Heatwave, INK in Negril, Appleton Pier Pressure Fridays at Pier 1 in Montego Bay, among others.

While Bankay says for Dream Weekend there will be islandwide events to be announced and pre-Dream parties such as Twisted Spiritz on May 15, Osmosis on July 3 and Absinthe on July 11.

For this year, the Dream promoters are looking for bigger and better venues to satisfy their growing crowd while keeping other plans for weekend under wraps until the launch. For Chin, ATI plans to change the set up and themes, giving patrons something different.

  • Ky-Mani loses his cool

Singer Ky-Mani Marley was detained briefly by police in Cleveland, Ohio last Tuesday after threatening a disc jockey in that city.

Marley was in Cleveland promoting his autobiography, Dear Dad, on WMMS FM/100.7 when host DJ Rover allegedly made sexual comments about his mother, Anita Belnavis.

The singer reportedly left the studio but was told that the DJ continued making suggestive remarks about his mother on air. Marley returned, barged into the studio and threatened to assault Rover whose real name is Shane French.

Police were contacted and they detained Marley for 45 minutes. Rover declined to press charges and Marley was released.

Belnavis was a leading table tennis player in the Caribbean when she became pregnant for reggae superstar Bob Marley in 1975.

Their son, Ky-Mani, was born the following year.

In Dear Dad, Ky-Mani Marley recalls his early years growing up with his mother in her hometown of Falmouth, Trelawny where he was born.

His book tour is scheduled to continue in San Francisco, California tomorrow and Los Angeles on Friday.

  • Levi Roots in hot sauce

Levi Roots, the singer-turned culinary guru, is being sued by a man who claims to be the inventor of Reggae Reggae Sauce, which has brought the former fame throughout Europe.

TheDaily Mail newspaper reported Saturday that Tony Bailey, an associate of Roots for nearly 20 years, filed a claim in London's High Court seeking Ł300,000 in royalties.

Bailey says Roots stole Reggae Reggae Sauce's recipe from him. The Jamaican-born Roots introduced the sauce on Britain's popular Dragon's Den programme three years ago and won Ł50,000.

Levi Roots was born Keith Valentine Graham in Clarendon.

After immigrating to Britain, he made a name for himself in reggae circles.

He said his sauce was inspired by a combination of spices he saw his grandmother using when he was a boy.

After his appearance on Dragon's Den, Roots and his sauce took off in Britain. It reportedly outsold the world-famous Heinz Tomato Ketchup and earned its creator a television show, Caribbean Food Made Easy, on the British Broadcasting Corporation.

The Daily Mail said when they contacted Levi Roots he declined to comment on Bailey's claims.

  • Toots hits the road again

Reggae's best touring act, Toots and The Maytals, are scheduled to start a 17-state tour of the United States Thursday in Orlando, Florida.

The band are down to perform in other traditionally strong areas like New York, Chicago and Massachusetts where the tour closes June 5. But there will be stops in Montana and Wisconsin, states where reggae traffic is not heavy.

Toots and his band are expected to perform in Britain and France following the US tour.

Toots Hibbert has enjoyed a career renaissance in the last decade. His music from the 1960s, which includes songs like Monkey Man andPressure Drop, have been acknowledged by famous names like EricClapton, Ben Harper and Bonnie Raitt.

Two years ago, he toured North America alongside Sheryl Crow and James Blunt.

Dancehall singjay, G-Whizz was the talk of the town after his performance in Atlanta last weekend.

"The show was great! We shell it dung man. I love performing and entertaining my fans, so having them enjoy what I have to offer is a good feeling," said G-Whizz.

After returning to the island on Sunday, G-Whizz immediately made his way to the Curry Festival in St. Ann, where he performed at the concert staged later that evening.

This weekend, G-Whizz, whose correct name is Garland Rowe, will be unveiling the video for one of his latest singles, Tomorrow. Tomorrow, an inspirational track which was the brainchild of Whizz, who thought a follow-up of sorts to his hit single, Life, was necessary.

"People encounter problems every day and feel down sometimes, and sometimes you just want someone to encourage you. Sometimes that's not even a friend, it can come from music. That's what I want to offer through my songs. I'm hoping the video and the song will touch and encourage people," he said.

The video for Tomorrow should be premiered on TVJ's Entertainment Report tonight.

File - A section of the crowd at Sting 2003 that had to scamper for cover during a physical altercation on stage between deejays Ninja Man and Vybz Kartel.

The promoters of the annual Sting stage show were successfully sued by a police corporal who suffered injuries during the 2003 staging of the event.

Judgment was handed down by Resident Magistrate Simone Maddix in the Spanish Town Civil Court for $230,000 against Supreme Promotions, the promoter of the event.

The suit brought against Isaiah Laing and Supreme Promotions came from Corporal Debby Rhoden of the St Catherine South Police Division.

Rhoden, represented by attorney-at-law Sean Kinghorn, claimed that about 3:30 a.m. during the 2003 staging of the annual event, she was on duty in the stage area of the venue.

A fracas broke out between Desmond 'Ninja Man' Ballentine and Adidja 'Vybz Kartel' Palmer. Bottles and other missiles were thrown during which she was hit.

Having suffered injuries to her hand, back and neck, she was helped to the first-aid area by police personnel and patrons.

She was subsequently taken to the Spanish Town Hospital and the private practice of Dr Marc Whyte at Tangerine Place, who treated her over a period of time for the injuries received.

The suit was subsequently filed for pain and suffering by the plaintiff, who was seeking $250,000 in damages.

File - Spragga Benz performing at Life Fest last year.

Veteran dancehall artiste Spragga Benz yesterday said that he's yet to follow up on the dreams of his son, who was shot and killed by police on Saturday, August 23, 2008, on Church Street, in downtown Kingston.

The deejay, known for his witty street lyrics, told THE WEEKEND STAR that he still plans to fulfil the dreams of his son, Carlton 'Carlisle' Grant Jr, as he continues preparation for the second annual Life Fest concert, which is set to take place tomorrow at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre, in memory of his son.

Spragga Benz says he has been working assiduously to spread the message of education as that was one of Carlisle's main priorities despite his passion in acting and fashion.

"Wi nuh move pon dem mission deh yet because a education wi a push ... right now mi a highlight things weh youths can learn from and realise that certain things can happen," he said.

In a previous interview with THE STAR, Spragga Benz said that in honour of Carlisle's dreams, he would at least attempt to fulfil two: creating a movie and a clothing line brand.

shattered

However, due to a busy schedule and his continued recuperation over the tragedy which shattered the hearts of both Spragga Benz and Sharon Gapoor, his son's mother, the deejay is yet to get those projects off the ground.

And although Spragga may still be hurting, he is determined to accomplish what his son dreamt about during his 18-years on Earth.

"Mi very determine fi deal wid it, but di fus thing weh him did a deal wid was getting his friends motivated to deal wid dem education. I have connections wid companies weh print T-shirts for the event, but as far as having a clothing brand ... it's yet to be formulated," he said.

The Tiny Tot lyricist says he already spoke to Cess, who was the producer and director for the popular Jamaican movie Top Shottas, on matters relating to making a movie.

It is alleged that, after collecting the positive results from his Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) papers, a very jubilant Carlisle, past student of Jamaica College and Camperdown High, decided to go celebrate his achievements with his friends at a party in the downtown area.

However, the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) reported that about 11:50 p.m. on Saturday, August 23, 2008, members of a police party were on patrol along Church Street when two men were seen on a bicycle.

They were signalled to stop and they complied. However, one of the men pulled a gun and fired at the police. The fire was returned and the men ran. The area was searched and Grant was found suffering from gunshot wounds.

A 45 semi-automatic pistol was also allegedly taken from him. The injured Grant was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

However, Spragga Benz says he's still not convinced by the police's report, and although the incident took place two years ago, he's yet to get over it.

"Wi a gwan deal wid it same way, wi know wi cyah change di reality of the situation ... a lot of people who just a see mi from di incident still a express condolences," he said.

The case appeared in court on Monday, April 26, and is set to return at a later date.

Juggla has emerged as a dark horse in the competition

The exit of Gibralta and Professor Nuts' Wild Card Pick, Queen Doll, from the competition last week shows that the competition has reached boiling point. It was Gibralta who launched an uncharacteristic salvo two weeks ago when he tackled Chozenn, Juggla and Tanto Blacks in lyrical warfare.

The artiste who hails from Spanish Town proved that he had what it took to go toe to toe with any DJ on the Magnum Stage. He scorched the stage with lyrics like "...dem call up mi name and mek mi get cross... dem no bad like Gibralta mi bad like the navy," he continued "Tanto Blacks a only noise him love mek, if yuh follow him yuh gonna end up wid a bruk neck."

Despite these hard hitting lyrics, Gibralta was voted off the following week. This just shows how intense the competition has gotten; when a creditable artiste cannot find a space on the Magnum big stage.

Queen Doll who was Professor Nuts' Wild Card Pick did not fare any better as she too was voted off last week. She ran on stage with lyrics such as: "mi no waan no likkle boy fi ticklish me."

Despite getting kudos from Scatta, Miss Kitty and the Professor she did not tickle the voters and was sent packing. Judge Scatta says she is a good artiste and can go far: "She have a swagger, she has lyrics and she got a 75 per cent out of 100 and I know she can go far."

positive lyrics

With those two contestants voted off, this week two more will go home. Press Fyah has held his own with positive lyrics and a style that is so different from the other contestants in the competition. Juggla has emerged as a dark horse in the competition and threatens to turn the tables on the two front runners; Chozenn and Tanto Blacks, who have both maintained their lyrical potency and have carried the crowd over the last few weeks.

Based on the performance of these four princes left in the competition, the next three weeks will be hot with no one knowing who will go home next.

On the female side, Reggae Queen has emerged as one of the crowd favourites and over the last few weeks has consistently performed to the joy of the crowd gathered at Weekenz.

Before the rain, LA Lewis proclaimed that Reggae Queen had him drinking Magnum Tonic Wine 'nuff', and he liked everything about her. Despite breathing problems she has not faltered on the Magnum Stage.

That cannot be said, however, for her close rival Mysterious, who despite good performances has on a few occasions forgotten her lyrics. However, she has been returned to the Magnum stage again and again by her fans, which shows that she has a large following. Bumpa also has her eyes on the crown, her lyrics are always on point and she has been very consistent. Lyrics such as "Dem a hider but the truth still a spread wider...Tiger Woods still hide and cheat... Kartel still deh a gaza a hide and beat, Lisa still a hide and eat", have won her numerous fans.

has impressed

In the melee between Reggae Queen and Mysterious, Bumpa has remained above the fray although on some occasions she has made smart clandestine jabs at her fellow contestants.

Also in the mix is Gallawas who has impressed the judges week after week. This 17 year-old from Clarendon has held her own amongst much older contestants. Her lyrics are mature and more often than not, carry a message. These factors have endeared her to the fans and have brought her back week after week.

With eight contestants left in the competition and only three weeks left to the crowning of the 2010 Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall, the competition has heated up reaching boiling point and no one knows who will go home this week.

Watch Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall this Saturday at 9:30pm on TVJ to see who will not wear the crown.

Renardo Lewis of Reggae group To-Isis.

Reggae singer Renardo Lewis of longstanding Reggae group To-Isis survived a near-fatal car accident early Wednesday morning.

Lewis says he was on his way to New Kingston to pick up his wife from work some minutes after 12:30 a.m., and upon reaching the Waterloo-South Avenue intersection he stopped at the traffic light.

"I was waiting for it to change to green and I proceeded to remove my jacket which I had worn to a performance earlier in the day. When I was finished putting it on my seat, that's when I saw two bright lights in my rear view, but it was already too late for me to do anything. The Hiace bus already hit me so hard that my car was sent all the way from the traffic light to the sidewalk area where I ran headfirst into the wall of JO JO's Market," he said.

rag doll

"I was being tossed around inside the car like a rag doll. When it all stopped I tried to get out but my door was stuck, I had to give it a couple hard pushes to finally get it open. The first thing I saw was someone in a green and white shirt, and I just want to say thank you to all the people on the scene who helped me out and made sure I was okay," he said.

The motor car which was totalled in the accident was removed from the scene after the police arrived and Lewis was taken to the University of the West Indies hospital after giving his statement at the Half-Way Tree Police Station.

Tests were conducted and "all my x-rays came back clean. I, however, have whiplash and a lower back strain. I'm extremely grateful to be alive. When I think about being sailed from one side of the road, through a red light into a wall, I know God is good. I'm also happy I was wearing a seatbelt, or I could have been flung from the car. Now I'm kind of apprehensive to drive and I'm going to get nervous whenever I see a vehicle getting too close to the back of my car," said Lewis.

Jah Cure

After overcoming the initial fears of whether Jah Cure would have been able to perform at Reggae Explosion II in St Maarten on Wednesday night, an estimated 9000 persons turned out to see the entertainer on the show that the promoter described as the biggest show of this Carnival season.

"The show was beautiful," said a very pleased promoter, Clarence Darby. "It went very well."

sparked fears

Jah Cure had been billed to appear on the show as well as other Jamaican acts Beenie Man and Busy Signal. However, the arrest last week of the 32-year-old entertainer on drug possession charges, sparked fears in the tiny Dutch colony that he would not have been able to fulfil his obligations. When he heard of Jah Cure's arrest, Darby told THE STAR that if Jah Cure failed to show, he (Darby) would have been destroyed.

Jah Cure had a court date set for last Monday, 24 hours before he was set to depart for St Maarten. An entertainment talk show host in St Maarten was even telling listeners that Jah Cure was in jail and that he would not be able to perform.

In the meantime, Jah Cure, who pleaded not guilty to marijuana possession in court, flew to St Maarten on Tuesday as expected, making the promoter a very happy man.

"Once he got into St Maarten, the Herald (newspaper) brought out a big spread clearing up the matter," Darby explained. He said had Jah Cure not been able to perform, patrons would have been disappointed, but he was banking on the other big acts in Busy Signal and Beenie Man to save the day.

Reports out of St Maarten said the entertainer performed well. There were continuous screams of delight from the near full house at the Festival Village in Philipsburg as the thousands in attendance eagerly lapped up the performances. Jah Cure performed many of his crowd favourites but he was unable to complete his set as police shut the show down.

According to Darby, the show should have finished at 3a.m. as stipulated by the permit. When it didn't, the police arrived to shut it down. The police did allow an extra half hour but even then Jah Cure was unable to complete his set, but the crowd got enough to sate their desires.

In the end, everybody went away satisfied. "It was the show that everyone wanted to see," Darby said.

ENGLAND OR VIETNAM???

-- Edited by javon on Saturday 27th of March 2010 08:47:35 PM

LONDON, England (AFP) Humble Fulham reached the first European final of their 131-year history yesterday, but Liverpool's season of misery was compounded when Atletico Madrid prevented hopes of an all-English Europa League title showdown.

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson saluted his side's unbreakable spirit as they completed a remarkable run to the May 12 final with a 2-1 win over Hamburg at Craven Cottage.

Forlan_w370.jpg

The unfashionable Premier League team were heading out of the competition with 21 minutes to play in the semi-final second leg.But Hodgson's men, who lost leading scorer Bobby Zamora to injury early in the second half, dug deep to recover from Mladen Petric's first half goal thanks to late strikes from Simon Davies and Zoltan Gera.

The Cottagers had already eliminated holders Shakhtar Donetsk, Italian giants Juventus and German champions Wolfsburg in a fairytale journey.

Fulham have never won a major honour at home or abroad, but they will play in a first European final, against Atletico at Hamburg's Nordbank Arena on May 12.

Former Inter Milan boss Hodgson said: "I thought it was a great performance. The game was quite even and all of a sudden we were a goal down knowing it was an away goal as well.

"It would have been easy to lose our heads and forget our plans but we didn't and we came back into it. I thought we were good value for the win."

At Anfield, Diego Forlan's 102nd-minute goal ended Liverpool's hopes of a first trophy in four years as Rafa Benitez's side were denied a place in the final by Atletico Madrid on the away goals rule.

On a dramatic night, Yossi Benayoun's 95th-minute goal, which gave the hosts a 2-1 semi-final aggregate advantage, looked to have booked Liverpool a place in their third European final in six seasons.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Alberto Aquilani had levelled the aggregate scores with a sublime finish before Benayoun struck early in extra time.

But former Manchester United striker Forlan, whose goal gave Atletico a narrow 1-0 lead from the first leg, sent the Spaniards through.

Dancehall deejay Deva Bratt is once again ready to push his career to the next level with a slew of new releases which show off his incredible flow and mind-blowing lyrics. There is also a great buzz around him since the announcement that he will be one of the headliners of the stage show called The Settlement' Part Twice which will be held on June 12th at the Kingston Polo Club.

Deva's long-time nemesis, Munga, is also going to be one of the headliners, raising the possibility that they may have a lyrical face off.

"Mi ready fi anything, I am not sure that Munga will be up to it, but mi ready fi entertain the people and show say lyrically mi ah the baddest ting," Deva said.

Tommy Thompson, organiser of The Settlement, says that he has spoken to both parties and neither have objected to a potential clash.

"I know that Deva is ready, but Munga said that he would definitely talk to me more about it, but I know that he is not afraid to take on Deva and this is something that the public wants to see. I want to stress that this is a lyrical ting, nothing physical," Thompson said.

Three years ago, Deva Bratt and Munga got involved in a physical altercation at the Stone Love Anniversary show at Mas Camp in New Kingston creating quite a furore in the music biz.

THE ONGOING criminal mayhem in Montego Bay, St James, took another wicked twist yesterday when a five-year-old girl was shot and killed in Glendevon after thugs opened fire on the vehicle in which she was travelling to school with her father and an elder sister.

The dead child has been identified as Christina Salmon of a Rose Heights address. Her father was reportedly shot in the mouth, while her eight-year-old sister suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The injured man and his surviving daughter were both hospitalised.

The child's killing came the same day gunmen murdered St Catherine deacon Michael Dixon. Dixon, who was one of at least 11 people killed over the past 24 hours, was reportedly shot while conducting morning prayers at home in St Catherine.

In another Montego Bay incident on a day marked by protests and sporadic violence, a salesman was also shot and killed. He was identified as Newton John of a Felicity Road address in Glendevon.

Reports are that sometime after 7:30 a.m., Christina's father was transporting his daughters to school when he breached a roadblock that was set up by persons protesting Wednesday's killing of two men in the area by the police.

Shortly after going through the roadblock, armed thugs turned their guns on the vehicle, firing a barrage of shots, hitting all three occupants. Despite being shot, the injured father maintained control of the vehicle and sped off to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where Christina was pronounced dead.

Within recent times, the child's father has been a very strong advocate for peace in his home community and was a founding member of the Rose Heights Covenant of Peace, an organisation founded seven months ago with a mandate to rid that community of lawlessness.

Pastor Knollis King, who initiated the formation of the Rose Heights Covenant of Peace after declaring that he had become "sick and tired" of burying young men killed in a gang conflict, said the murder of young Christina was a cruel blow.

Cruel blow

"This is a sad blow to us here in Rose Heights, as Christina's dad is one of the strongest advocates for peace in the com-munity," King told The Gleaner. "As a community, we fully understand his pain at this time and we will be doing all we can to support the family."

He added: "He is a young man who adored his little girls and when I spoke to him today, he was totally consumed with grief. He told me he would have preferred if it was he who was killed and his daughter spared."

To date, St James has recorded 86 homicides since the start of the year.

Reacting to the ongoing violence, Dr Horace Chang, member of parliament for the area, said he would be trying his best in imploring his parliamentary colleagues to treat the situation in the western city with greater urgency.

"I think I have to convince my colleagues to be more aggressive," Chang said.

"I have had some support, in bringing to bear the kind of extensive social intervention, which will combine the resources of the PMI (Peace Management Initiative), CSJP (Citizen Security and Justice Pro-gramme) and the SDC (Social Develop-ment Commission) to see if we can cauterise the continued entrance of the younger genera-tion into the system."

The unrest also resulted in the sus-pension of classes at the Glendevon Pri-mary and Junior High, Farm Primary and Junior High, as well as Green Pond basic, primary and high schools. Several pro-fessionals in the community were also prevented from going to work.

The mayhem came less than 24 hours after National Security Minister Senator Dwight Nelson flew into Montego Bay and announced plans to establish a police post in the nearby Montego Hills neighbourhood.

He also said 40 additional personnel would be deployed to the St James Police Division to strengthen its manpower.

THE music of the late Crown Prince of Reggae, Dennis Brown, has jumped on iTunes and Amazon charts following leaked music and also an influential media report listing him among the world's 50 'great' voices.

This week his music charted three places on Amazon, including:

*#1 with Love and Hate;

*# 3 with Milk and Honey; and

*# 4 with Bless Me Jah.

He was also # 3 on iTunes with Love and Hate. Digital sales account for one-third of global music sales and iTunes is the dominant online music store in the US and Amazon is fourth, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) Digital Report 2010.

Brown's music, however, has not charted in the top 10 on iTunes in recent memory as the chart is dominated by the latest releases from international reggae artistes, along with the catalogue albums of Bob Marley, Sean Paul and Shaggy.

All of the albums charting by Brown are catalogue hits. However, this month an updated version of Brown's classic single Promised Land featuring US rapper Nas and deejay Damian Marley was leaked online. The single has been receiving a lot of Internet buzz which may have triggered interest in his back catalogue. It is part of the artiste duo album Distant Relatives, delayed for a year, now set for a late May release date.

The Promised Land maintains the chorus and heavy bassline of the original, but Marley and Nas trade verses. The song's theme re-imagines Africa enjoying the prosperity of US. The album's first official single, As We Enter, features the duo deejaying in a call-and-response formation.

The duo stated on their Myspace.com page that the album is not aimed at being commercial, however it is highly anticipated.

"What we're about to do right now is go back. Back to a time when rap's greatest hits were created in basement soundrooms, not corporate boardrooms. When dancehall and hip-hop music was all about moving the crowd not moving units," a joint statement read.

Also last week, National Public Radio (NPR) the US equivalent to the BBC in the UK, published an article on Brown in its section entitled 50 Great Voices. The article included interviews by Damian Marley and Freddie McGregor, who both lauded Brown as the Crown Prince of Reggae. The series will run weekly throughout 2010 and feature a "great" singer from around the world.

Brown died in 1999 after a career spanning four decades.

West coast rapper and Black Wall Street general The Game is shooting getting ready to drop a new album, The Red Album, so he's shooting a new video for the project. He linked up with Pharrell for the next single, "It Must Be," and some pictures have surfaced of the video shoot. Check out the flicks of The Game and Pharrell, and check for a cameo from Wu Tang's own Raekwon!

President Barack Obama couldnt hold back the tears as he attended the funeral of the woman he called the 'Godmother' of the American civil rights movement. The Prez was weeping openly as he watched the service for Dorothy Height in Washington. The President delivered the eulogy for Dr Height, whose activism stretched for more than five decades. The President eulogy lasted about 13 minutes:

'She never cared about who got the credit,' the president said. 'What she cared about was the cause. The cause of justice, the cause of equality, the cause of opportunity, freedom's cause.'

A five-year-old girl and a church deacon were among the Jamaicans murdered yesterday as gunmen continued wanton killings across the island, pushing the murder toll to almost 530 in just four months.

The life of five-year-old Christiana Salmon was cut short by trigger-happy gunmen while her dad was taking her and her elder sister to school early in the morning. Her sister, 9, was shot and injured.

Montego-Bay-riot-_w370.jpg

The marauding gunmen, the police reported, peppered Christopher Salmon's Rover motor car with bullets while he drove along Felicity Road in the dreaded crime-plagued community of Glendevon.Salmon, who was shot in the mouth and neck, drove the car with his *lo**-drenched daughters to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where Christiana was pronounced dead, and he and the other child were treated. Their conditions were said to be serious.

Salesman Uton Johns, a resident of Felicity Road in St James, was earlier cut down by armed men, also in Glendevon.

Salmon, a resident of Rose Heights, was apparently caught in a roadblock mounted by residents of Glendevon who were protesting against Wednesday's police killing of Donavon Campbell and Gary Hines, both of Glendevon, who were said to be among 15 gunmen who engaged the police in a firefight.

The protest forced the shutdown of three schools -- Albion Primary and Junior High, Green Pond Primary, and Green Pond High.

In the meantime, the churchman, Michael Dixon, a member of the Lighthouse Assembly Worship Centre on Garbally Drive in Spanish Town, was murdered at his home in the Arlington Housing Scheme along March Pen Road, a tough community in the old capital.

Police said his body was found lying beside his bed about 5:30 yesterday morning.

There were unconfirmed reports that the young deacon was saying morning prayers when his life was cut short by the *lo**-thirsty gunmen who shot him in the face and upper body.

Police investigators said the gunmen gained entry to Dixon's house by climbing through a window.

Yesterday, a handful of Dixon's church sisters and brothers gathered at the Lighthouse Assembly Worship Centre, after hearing the news of his murder.

"Pastor Michael would not hurt a soul. He is the type of person who, as you say hello to him, he would reply "hanging on" and immediately give you a word of encouragement," said Kevin Astin, as tears welled-up in his eyes.

"Such a man did not deserve to die like that," said Shelly Schooler, acting secretary at the church.

Dr Andrew Wheatley, the mayor of Spanish Town, in condemning the murder of the churchman, said it showed that "everyone is a potential victim" of violence in the country.

"That man was involved in almost all of the crime reduction initiatives (in Spanish Town); 10,000-Man March, everything. I really can't believe he was killed like that," said the mayor, who said he had met with Dixon at several peace initiatives in Spanish Town.

The Lighthouse Assembly Worship Centre has, for several years, been involved in a number of community outreach and skills-training programmes for the youth and less fortunate, as well as peace initiatives, in the Spanish Town area.

Shortly after 8:00 yesterday morning, while police were processing the scene where the deacon was shot dead, they were summoned to the nearby Westchester Housing Scheme in Duncan's Pen, where gunmen chased and shot dead 21-year-old Shamar Elliot while he was riding his bicycle to work.

A number of the slain man's co-workers from the salt factory cried openly when they looked at his lifeless body on the ground in the community which he lived.

lutan_fyah_paris.jpgLutan Fyah continues to blaze the trail wherever he performs as he did recently on the club scene in Seattle, Washington; Eugene and Portland in Oregon and Los Angeles, California in the United States. He then jetted across the Atlantic for performances in Paris, France. According to his team, these club shows were a resounding success.

The six-date US West Coast shows began March 14 in Seattle at the Nectar Lounge and concluded March 23 at the Arcadia Theatre in California. It is reported at the last show held at the Arcadia Theatre, Lutan Fyah gave a great performance, backed by the five-piece Mexican reggae band Intersol.

The mixed audience rocked and screamed to the sweet sounds of his music has he performed hits like St Jago De La Vega, Mightier Than Dem, Save The Juvenile, Rasta Still De Bout, Season Of Love, Mek It So Hard, Nuh Talk just to name a few. He could do no wrong as the audience was hungry for his music.

In Paris, where he did three shows were at clubs Loridne, Brittany and New Morning, he once again performed to pack venues. At the New Morning, it was like an inferno as there was no room in the capacity full venue.

Backed by Dub Akom Band, Lutan entered the stage 11:15pm belting out anno vex dem vex a jus surprise dem surprise when dem realize Rasta still de Bout. It was pandemonium as the mostly white audience was in a frenzy.
I have been coming to France since 2004 and I always get a good reception from the people, they love Lutan Fyah music, he said.

He has since return to the island to continue recording tracks for his new album.

Chyna Accused of Viciously Attacking Woman

TMZ has learned former WWE star Chyna has been named in connection with an LAPD battery investigation -- and the alleged victim claims Chyna got so violent, she thought she was going to die.

0428_chyna_ex_tmz

Law enforcement sources tell us the alleged incident went down Saturday night at a motel in Sherman Oaks, CA. Cops wouldn't release any details, but according to the accuser -- the whole thing was like a scene out of a bad wrestling skit.

The accuser, Gabriela Targos (pictured left), tells TMZ Chyna called her up to hang out at the motel Saturday -- but when Gabriela arrived, she claims Chyna immediately snapped and began attacking her for no reason.

Targos, who claims she's been friends with Chyna for years, says the former wrestler punched her in the face, dragged her by the hair, beat her with a wire hanger and threatened to kill her.

Gabriela claims she somehow managed to run out of the motel room, booked it down the street, and approached some cops who were eating dinner -- who then took a police report.

Gabriela claims she met with LAPD detectives Wednesday morning. So far, no arrests have been made.

Multiple attempts to reach Chyna for comment were unsuccessful.

Laura Bush book suggests poison at German summit: report

NEW YORK Former first lady Laura Bush writes in her forthcoming autobiography that she and her husband George W. Bush may have been poisoned when they became ill at a summit in Germany in 2007, the New York Times reported Wednesday.

Writing in her book "Spoken from the Heart," due to be released in May, Laura Bush says that the US Secret Service probed whether the presidential delegation may have been poisoned at the G8 summit.

George W. Bush spent part of the summit bedridden.

Doctors concluded that they had contracted a virus, she said, according to the Times report.

However "we never learned if any other delegations became ill, or if ours, mysteriously, was the only one," Laura Bush wrote.

She also wrote about a fatal November 1963 car accident when she was 17 in Texas and at the wheel of a car that hit another, killing the driver, a fellow student.

"I lost my faith that November, lost it for many, many years," she writes.

"It was the first time that I had prayed to God for something, begged him for something, not the simple childhood wishing on a star but humbly begging for another human life. And it was as if no one heard."

The book is also devoted, according to the Times report, to rebutting critics of her husband. She calls insulting comments by the Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid "uncalled for and graceless."

Gay targets Bolt's 200m record

April 30, 2010
Started By jubalson0 Comments

AMERICAN sprinter Tyson Gay, who is scheduled to run the 400 metres at tomorrow's seventh staging of the Jamaica International Invitational, is hoping to challenge Usain Bolt's 200m record of 19.19 seconds later this season.

"I hope that my 400m relates to my 200m dropping down and I think that's the key," Gay told journalists during a one-hour teleconference organised by track and field's governing body, the IAAF, yesterday. Gay is third on the all-time list of 200m runners with 19.58 achieved last season. Only Bolt and former record-holder Michael Johnson (with 19.32secs) has ever gone faster.

Tyson-Gay_w370.jpg

"I'm healthy and for me to open up with 44.8 by accident, because I haven't been training in spikes or done any speed work, that's just amazing, but it just shows that I go out there and run hard," added the World Champs 100m and 200m gold medallist from 2007.Bolt lowered both his 100m and 200m world records to 9.58 and 19.19 respectively at last summer's World Championships in Berlin, a year after setting marks at 9.69 and 19.30 at the Beijing Olympics.

Tyson, who underwent groin surgery last November, indicated that he will by trying to attack the 200m record the same way Johnson did.

"I have more foot speed than Michael Johnson, but at the same time I didn't have the kind of strength, so I'm kind of trying to go the way... Johnson done it where he had strength in the 400m and went down to the 200m and dropped his time. Hopefully, following that model I'll be successful," Gay reasoned.

Johnson, who won two Olympic and four world championships 400 gold medals, established the mark of 43.18secs in 1999.

Gay, who clocked 9.71 to take silver behind Bolt in Berlin last summer, is looking forward to the head-to-head match-ups against Bolt and Asafa Powell on the IAAF Diamond League series this season.

"The last time we ran against each other was Berlin and I really think that this year is going to be exciting for the fans 'cause if they can see that race in Berlin again and again and again, I think that's what the sport really needs," he said.

"I think when we all hook up together... the world record could go down," he added.

Meanwhile, the 27-year-old American, who became the first athlete to achieve the milestone of dipping under 10secs in the 100, 20secs in the 200, and 45secs in the 400m when he clocked 44.89secs on April 17, will face a competitive field tomorrow in the 400m at the JII meet.

Gay will match strides with World 400m bronze medallist Renny Quow of Trinidad and Tobago and the Jamaican trio of Ricardo Chambers, Jermaine Gonzales and Lanceford Davis.

PARIS, France (AP) As he sat in Church last Sunday afternoon, Guillaume Humblot found himself troubled by the declining number of Catholic priests in France, and asked himself if he was ready to join the cloth.

"There are almost none left," the 31-year-old Humblot said.

On Facebook, Humblot discovered a forum dedicated to people who, like him, are considering the priesthood. The page was part of a campaign, launched by the Catholic Church this month, to attract young people to the priesthood following decades of dwindling ordainments -- and amid waves of sexual abuse allegations that have darkened the reputation of the Catholic priest. There are about 24,000 priests in France today, down from 42,000 in 1975. The number of Catholics entering the diocese has declined as well, from 116 ordainments in 1999 to 89 in 2009.

"There is a crisis in vocation," said French priest and family therapist Stephane Joulain. "We don't have sufficient numbers to renew the number of priests available for ministry today."

"Pourquoi Pas Moi?" or "Why Not Me?" is the slogan for the recruitment campaign -- which today may prove a tough question for the Church to answer.

The euro250,000 campaign was launched nationwide on April 20 and will last through May 5. Seventy-thousand postcards depicting a Catholic priest's outfit with a button reading "Jesus is my Boss," pinned to the lapel and the slogan "Why not?" written underneath will be distributed to 600 points throughout France, including restaurants, bars and movie theatres. A Facebook page created April 21 garnered over 1,200 fans within one week.

From Germany to the United States to Brazil, hundreds of victims have come forward in recent months to say they were abused by Catholic priests, plunging the church into a worldwide crisis that has reached Pope Benedict XVI. Many churchgoers say Vatican leadership has not reacted strongly enough.

TULSA, Oklahoma (AP) -- A 67-year-old Oklahoma man had quite a fright after backing his car at high speed through a seventh-floor exterior wall of a parking garage.

Ralph Hudson says his foot got stuck between his Mercedes' brake and gas pedal as he was backing up in a towering parking garage in downtown Tulsa on Wednesday.

The car burst through the building's exterior wall and sprayed debris on a parking lot below before stopping just in time. The car's trunk and part of its back wheels were left hanging precariously out of the building but officials were able to safely drive it back inside.

Police officer Jason Willingham says Hudson was not ticketed over the incident.

THE Jamaican Government has found a buyer for the only two aircraft owned by Air Jamaica that are being sold to pay taxes owed to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the United States.

President of the airline Bruce Nobles told the Observer Wednesday that they had received "a letter of intent to sell the two aeroplanes", which have been on the market since last summer, at US$17 million each.

He, however, did not divulge the name of the potential buyer, only to say that the entity was based in the US and "buys and sells aeroplanes"."We are close to finalising the deal," he told the Observer, following a press conference at the airline's downtown Kingston headquarters to give an update on tomorrow's takeover of Air Jamaica's operations by Trinidad-owned Caribbean Airlines.

He said that he expected to have the planes off their hands "in the next couple days".

The Air Jamaica president said the proceeds from the sale of the two aeroplanes would go to the IRS, which is owed some US$30 million.

"That will clean up most of the amount," Nobles said.

Nobles said the sums had been wracked up over time as the airline had taken to using the taxes it collected from ticket sales -- on behalf of the US government -- "to make payroll and to buy fuel and so forth".

"We are in the process of paying that back. But they have been adding interest and penalties on top of that so we paid a lot back," he said.

Nobles, however, said he was not at liberty to say the final cost the planes were being sold for.

"I'm not able to say, we don't have a final deal yet; they don't want to read about it in the papers," he ended.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding, in a statement to Parliament in February, said the two aircraft owned by Air Jamaica would be sold to settle debts to the IRS.

"We owe a lot of money. We have had to use diplomatic channels to avoid our planes being seized for non-payment of fees owed to the Government of the United States. It is proposed to dispose of those two aircraft in order to discharge that obligation," the prime minister told the House.

The two aircraft were the only ones in the Air Jamaica fleet that are owned by the Government. Air Jamaica operated with a fleet of aircraft.

SCRAP metal dealers on Wednesday staged a protest at the Riverton City landfill in Kingston over Government's decision to shut down the trade.

Industry, Investment and Commerce Minister Karl Samuda on Monday announced a stop to all scrap metal trade effective Tuesday, with the exception of manufacturers who generate their own scrap metal.

Roving4_w370.jpg

The ban followed a series of theft of critical infrastructure. The decision, however, left many dealers fuming."I think they need to focus on investigating the thieves instead of locking down everybody. That not right," a protester, who gave his name only as 'Devon', told the Observer.

"It is not fair for you to be doing your little hustling legally, and because of other people who feel that them must take away people things, you lock down our food," he continued.

The irate man, bearing a placard describing the Government as "wicked to poor people" was among a large gathering who stood at the entrance to the dump, to highlight their situation.

Their screams grabbed the attention of a few motorists, who were driving along the busy Spanish Town Road.

The Government has on more than one occasion suspended the trade after it was discovered that unscrupulous persons were stealing guard rails, generators, manhole covers, and other items, to meet the demand.

In the most recent incident, thieves entered the Colbeck Irrigation pumping station in St Catherine, where they vandalised critical agricultural equipment valued at some $15 million. The sugar sector alone has lost more than $87 million to scrap metal thieves in the past 21 months, according to Agriculture Minister Christopher Tufton.

THE Supreme Court yesterday ordered the State to pay close to $21 million to a 40-year-old Hanover farmer who 16 years ago was shot in the back while running away from the police who had earlier assaulted him.

The order in Michael Llewellyn's favour was made by Justice Martin Gayle who had found the cops -- Inspector Gladstone Grant and Sergeant Phillip Smith -- liable for shooting and injuring him without probable cause.

Llewellyn was awarded $20 million for pain and suffering and loss of amenities, $500,000 for handicap on the labour market and $391,100 in special damages plus interest. Costs were also awarded in Llewellyn's favour.

"I find that Mr Llewellyn has impressed me as a witness of truth," Justice Gayle remarked in his written judgement. "He seems more credible and reliable than the first and second defendants and witness. I accept his version of how the incident occurred on a balance of probability."

Martin said that Llewellyn was, on December 3, 1994, assaulted and beaten by the cops "without probable cause" and was shot in the back while running away.

Llewellyn testified during the March 2007 trial that while he was running he heard Grant saying, "Don't shoot! Don't shoot! Him no have nothing."

But attorneys for the State told the trial that Smith had fired in self-defence. It was posited that Llewellyn had picked up Grant's gun which fell during a scuffle and squeezed the trigger.

The police claimed that they had gone to apprehend Llewellyn for allegedly breaking into a home.

Smith said that Llewellyn was running and pointing the gun at them, when he fired three times.

However, Dr Francis Lindo, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, said in a medical report dated November 29, 2006 that Llewellyn was shot in the buttocks and that in his opinion the shooter must have been behind him. The bullet rested at Llewellyn's spine, the doctor said.

Llewellyn, following the incident, had a right below-the-knee amputation, which is connected to the shooting, the doctor said.

Justice Gayle said in his finding yesterday that Llewellyn was sleeping at his home when he was awakened by a kick from the police. He also found that the cop's gun in fact fell but that Llewellyn kicked it away.

"I find as a fact that the complainant did not pick up the gun and pointed the gun at the police. I find that the police was not acting in self-defence.

"I am satisfied on a preponderance of the probabilities that the defendants acted without reasonable and probable cause which would render them liable to the claimant in damages," Gayle wrote.

Llewellyn was represented by attorney Leonard Green.

TEACHERS hinted yesterday that there could be disruptions in the classroom next week, as they seek to put more pressure on Government to pay outstanding retroactive salaries.

Government owes the teachers more than $8 billion -- $2 billion of which is due for payment next month -- under a 2006 wage agreement made with that sector.

The teachers, who are represented by the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA), earlier this week rejected a Government payment schedule for the outstanding money, but declined to say what was the offer placed on the table.

JTA President Michael Stewart told the Observer yesterday that a decision is expected to be taken at a special executive meeting today on further industrial action to be taken. The teachers have already withdrawn from extra-curricular activities.

He could not say if a strike was among the likely action to be taken, in light of calls from JTA members in Clarendon for a three-day withdrawal from the classroom next week.

"I can't speak conclusively to that until after a decision has been taken at the meeting. What I can say is that the feedback we are getting from across the island is that the teachers are in a militant mood... and so there will be some disruption," he said.

SUPERINTENDENT Fitz Bailey, head of the elite Organised Crime Investigation Division (OCID), which this week seized millions of dollars' worth of illicit cigarettes, has received death threats, a reliable police source confirmed last night.

"Police are at this time still carrying out their checks into the matter, therefore, not much detail can be disclosed," a highly-placed source told the Observer, while confirming the report.

While it was unclear whether the threats were related to the big cigarette bust, a police source said they were issued against the OCID boss two days after police and the Customs Enforcement Team raided a house in Beverly Hills, Kingston where they seized several boxes of cigarettes valued at $12.9 million, millions of dollars in local and foreign currency and expensive liquor.

Two men -- Jason Kong, 50, and Jun Seng Xhang, 30 -- who were arrested in connection with the seizures are expected to appear before the court today.

They have been charged with breaches of the Customs Regulations Act, and breaches of the Trademark Act.
