A church in Hanover has become the subject of much ridicule and scrutiny following reports that the pastor and a deacon clashed in the churchyard during an argument over offering.
THE WEEKEND STAR heard that some two weeks ago, after preaching the sermon and ending the church service shortly after, the two elders began arguing after the deacon was accused of not throwing his offering for some time.
One member of the church who contacted THE WEEKEND STAR said the altercation occurred in full view of a number of persons who had not yet left and were still in the churchyard. The pastor's house is said to share the same yard space as the church and it is said that they were trying to keep away from the ears of the other church members but got a little too loud and eventually attracted their attention.
"I could not believe what I saw. These two persons are suppose to be elders and leaders of the church and really did nothing but to set a bad example ... And to think they were arguing over offering money really makes no sense," the church member who requested anonymity said.
hardships
According to her, the deacon was heard trying to explain that he had ran into some hardships and as such could not throw any money as offering while the pastor counter-argued that the deacon could nevertheless find money to do other things. At one point, the men seemed as they were even going to throw punches at each other but were restrained by other church members.
Efforts to contact the pastor were unsuccessful as calls to his cellphone went unanswered on several occasions.
church business
However, the deacon who also begged for anonymity confirmed the incident but was reluctant in saying what exactly happened.
"Well, you say people from the church have contacted you, so I guess you heard everything already. That is church business, so there is nothing I will say," he told THE WEEKEND STAR.
Other members for whom contact numbers were provided made similar claims and at least one even claimed she would be seeking to worship at another church as a result of the incident she describes as "shameful".
"Is a shameful ting, man, mi cyaa go dem church deh and feel good in a mi soul. Pastor and deacon a cuss ova offering and all did look like dem a guh fight, mi neva hear bout dat nowhere else yet ... . Mi son, mi a tell u di truth, mi a look somewhere else fi go worship mi God," 42-year-old Margaret James of Kew district in the parish said.
Asked of what she heard during the argument, James recalled, "Mi neva hear di whole argument eno, but mi only hear when di deacon a seh him neva have no money and like di pastor a seh a lie di deacon a tell."
She also added that she has been a member of the church for some nine years and venture on at least an hourlong trip to the church every Sunday.
Meanwhile, word of the clash has even reached the ears of the Area One police. Corporal Matthew Ainsley said though there were no formal reports, the police had heard of the incident.Cops say gunmen saw routes soldiers took into Tivoli
Police believe Christopher 'Dudus' Coke and a number of gunmen who challenged the security forces on May 23 made their escape with the aid of a closed-circuit television (CCTV).
Head of the Criminal Investigation Branch, Assistant Commissioner Les Green, told THE WEEKEND STAR that the CCTV system was recently found in the 'Presidential Click' office which is known to be occupied by Dudus. The office is located in a section of Tivoli Gardens called 'Java' where Dudus is also known to hang out.
"A CCTV system was found in his office and we will be checking to find out the areas which it could monitor," ACP Green said.
In addition, the police will also be making further checks to find where the footage from the camera system was saved.
A number of sources are theorising that the CCTV system was used to the advantage of Dudus and his defenders who fled the community and the security forces as they invaded west Kingston.
The massive offensive led to the death of 73 persons, some of whom may have been murdered before the incursion actually began.
The death toll is said to be nowhere near the amount of men who barricaded themselves inside west Kingston, armed and ready to take on the security forces.
"This is one avenue by which we believe a decent amount of gunmen were able to escape ... If you think about 400 men from different parts of the island were here ready and waiting to take us on and we know they escaped. They could only do so with some good aid and this CCTV thing is one such way it could be done as they could see the points from which the security forces were entering and with that knowledge could plan their escape route," one source explained.
When contacted, one thug who chose to remain in the community, expressed surprise at the finding but said he believed some of his counterparts who escaped did so with some form of help. "A suh di boss a move camera and all these things mi neva know I swear," he said.
The thug who was among hundreds of men who vowed to fight for Dudus added: "Me neva run cause mi naw run lef my family eno but mi did always suspect dem know weh and weh dem coulda run, mi jus neva know how dem figure out weh fi go, so mi guess it mek sense now."
Even other residents claimed they were unaware of the CCTV system while the police say another set of cameras were found in a house also at Java.Leighton Coke, the half-brother of Jamaica's most wanted fugitive, Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, will be charged with at least one count of shooting for now. This was after he was positively identified yesterday in an identification parade.
"This is just the first. He is to appear on several more ID parades," a senior member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force told The Gleaner. "Yesterday, he refused to leave his cell, so we took the witness to the cell, and that is where he was pointed out."
Contacted yesterday, Assistant Commissioner Les Green would only confirm that the ID parade was completed and that the investigation was progressing smoothly.
Allegations are that Coke (Leighton), who is better known as 'Livity', one of the area leaders of Tivoli Gardens, had been reluctant to appear before the ID parade.
His name was on a list of alleged inner-city dons issued by the police last month. He later surrendered to the police, in the company of well-known pastor, the Rev Al Miller.
Christopher Coke, who is wanted on gun and drug charges in the United States, is still on the run.
Wayne Rooney hit out at the England fans after they booed the team from the field following the dismal World Cup draw against Algeria in Cape Town.
The England forward's frustration was apparent as he walked off the pitch after the 0-0 draw, shouting to an advancing cameraman: "Nice to see your home fans boo you, that's loyal supporters."
The result means England need to beat Slovenia next Wednesday to ensure they qualify for the last 16.
With the United States and Slovenia drawing 2-2 earlier, Group C is finely poised. Slovenia have four points, with England and the USA on two and Algeria with one.
It was a poor performance from Capello's team with players looking tired and devoid of spark and captain Steven Gerrard made no excuses.
"We're not happy with the performance, we need more if we want to stay in this tournament to the later stages, we need to improve," Gerrard said.
"We weren't good enough in the final third to get the breakthrough.
"We know the job we've got to do, we've got to go and win the last game and that adds more pressure, but to play at this level you've got to handle it, you've got to play under pressure.
"We weren't at our level today, it's not good enough."
But manager Fabio Capello refused to be critical of the individual performances of the likes of Rooney, Gerrard and Frank Lampard.
The Italian told ITV1: "I do not like to talk about one player, if you don't play well it is not just one player who makes the difference."
But Capello was disappointed by his side's sloppy play when in possession, allowing Algeria to put them under pressure.
"It was not a good game," he continued. "We lost too many passes and I think this was not the team that I know, the team that I have known (in qualifying). But we have another game to play.
"When we give other teams the ball we do not win the ball back quickly and we play under pressure."
Capello would not be drawn on any changes he may make for the crucial clash with Slovenia on Wednesday but he said: "It can change, I will try."

YAYA TOURE will become a Manchester City player after the Premier League side agreed a Ł25million fee with Barcelona.
The two clubs should finalise the deal today with Toure ready to become the first big transfer of the summer subject to a medical.
City doctors are heading to South Africa to meet Toure who is preparing for the Ivory Coast's clash with Brazil on Sunday.
The midfielder will sign a four-year deal worth Ł6m per season and join up with his brother Kolo at Eastlands.
Toure has long been a target for City who first tried to nab him 18 months ago.
Back then Toure decided to sign a new deal and stay at the Nou Camp.
But he became disgruntled last season as Barca boss Pep Guardiola left him on the bench, preferring to start with Sergio Busquets.
His agent Dmitry Seluk insists most of the key figures at Barca want Toure to stay, but his lack of games under Guardiola has been a major problem.
Seluk said: "The president Joan Laporta, the incoming president Sandro Rosell, Guardiola, myself... we all want him to stay at Barcelona - it's one of the greatest clubs in the world.
"Everything is perfect except for one thing - playing 65 per cent of the minutes is not sufficient for a player like Yaya, but that's the only reason we want to go."
Seluk did, though, admit he would have a chat with Rosell "out of courtesy" before completing any move for his client.
He added: "I have to know his opinion because he is the new president."
Toure, 27, is one of the world's top defensive midfielders and snapping him up is a major coup for City.
In the past he's been a target for Arsenal and recently Chelsea also tried to reach a deal with Barcelona.

"I received a letter from Platini in which he clarified he'd never said what you journalists claimed he had," Maradona said. "So, I want to say sorry to Platini - but not to Pele."
Maradona had criticized the pair in reaction to reports that they had been critical of his coaching style.

Maradona also told former Brazil great Pele "to go back to the museum."

As the reggae-dancehall economic landscape continues to slip and slide, industry insiders have been utilising a number of marketing strategies, includingdigital distribution,to attract sales for their rhythms and songs.
Dancehall designer and producer, Romeich Major, owner of Romeich Records and whose well-known 'Bank Inna Pocket' rhythm has been doing well locally said, "I've found that online distribution helps us save a lot of money and hassle, because we don't have to deal with the cost of getting CDs done, we simply have them marketed online by a distribution company like 21st/Hapilos."
Dancehall producerLinton 'TJ' White, owner of TJ Records, spoke similarly and added, "One of the things I noticed is that us, artistes or producers, sometimes only focus on the local market and forget to market the songs overseas, and buying the songs online is easier forpeople in other parts of the world. So far, it's beengoing great."

Artiste's manager says money was returned
A promoter in the United States is fuming as she says she has been unable to recover money paid for Gyptian to perform at a show that he subsequently pulled out of.
Stephanie Neverson-Young, who operates a company called Under Barbie Promotion, said she was contacted by a group of high-school students in New York who wanted Gyptian to perform at their prom, which was going to be held on a boat on June 10.
Neverson-Young said she made contact with Gyptian's manager Ivor Ruddock in May and an agreement was made for the artiste to perform at the event. Afterwards, she said a US$5,000 (J$430,000) deposit was sent. Thereafter, she said she was informed by the manager that she could print the flyers with Gyptian's name on it.
"Everything was fine until about a week before the event when he called and told me that there were some visa issues and he (Gyptian) would not be able to travel," she told THE WEEKEND STAR.
After much research, Neverson-Young said she found out that Gyptian was booked for another event at Legends nightclub in Washington DC for the same day.
She said speedy contact was made with Serani to perform at the event, that was held on the New York Princess in Brooklyn.
Since sending the deposit to Ruddock in May, Neverson-Young said it has not been returned after she made numerous calls to him. She said he had also told her on many occasions that the money had been sent back to her. However, the promoter said she has not received it and is in debt as a result.
"For the behaviour that he has displayed, he needs to be exposed. Some of them (students) had to work after school to get this money so that they could pay for their prom dresses and tickets," she told THE WEEKEND STAR.
"I even had to take money from my pocket to cover some of the expenses. I needed to have the money as of last week. I have bills to be paid. I cannot wait any longer."
However, when contacted, Ruddock said the money had already been sent.
"The wire has been sent but the bank said it needed a beneficiary address. I asked her for it and she texted it to me. She is just trying to create problems 'cause she's upset," he told THE WEEKEND STAR, noting that the wire was sent on June 12.
He added that the artiste could not make the date as he was involved in a bike accident on Molynes Road on June 7. He also refuted Neverson-Young's claims of a double booking.
In the meantime, Ruddock said Gyptian is still recovering from the accident. The artiste is also gearing up to release his album Hold Yuh in July.
The Embassy of The Republic of Colombia in Jamaica is denying reports that a man recently held in Mandeville, Manchester on sexually related charges is a Colombian.
A release from the embassy on Monday, said it is seeking to correct erroneous reports that suggested that the accused, who is from the Dominican Republic, was Colombian.
The embassy said it is "concerned about some media erroneous reports about an alleged Colombian citizen who has been detained for a child sexual abuse." It further said no Colombian citizen was currently being processed for any sexual crime in Jamaica.
On Friday June 4, George Miguel Silvaro, 23, was arrested by the Mandeville police after being accused of having improper sexual contact with a 10-year-old boy. He was subsequently charged with indecent assault and remanded when he appeared in the Mandeville Resident Magistrate's Court on June 9.
Angry residents stormed the police station after the accused man's arrest, as well as the courthouse when he appeared. He returns to court on June 23.DJ Naz has her eyes set on the music industry in a big way. The lone female disc jockey, who competed for her chance to win $2 million in the 2009 Heineken Green Synergy, released her mix tape a few days ago and has already seen more than 800 downloads.
DJ Naz, whose real name is Nazaria Taylor, did well in the Kingston auditions of the competition and had the audience spellbound with her very impressive mixing. Although dropping out of the Green synergy competition, many believed that she did much better than her male counterparts. Now, she is ensuring that she is remembered as a bona fide disc jockey by releasing a mix tape called State of Emergency.
"The mix tape is my latest project. I'm mainly focusing on this right now because it doesn't make sense to release another mix tape with the same rhythms. Dat jus nuh mek nuh sense to me. I might try a hip-hop mix tape next, though," she said. "The tape State of Emergency has 71 tracks which includes the intro and the out-tro but fans can expect a whole lot of creativity."
Apart from that, Naz said she's currently at Best Fm every Friday and Thursday "putting in the work to reap the good rewards".
background
Taylor hails from a family with a strong music background. Her father is Don Taylor, the former manager of Bob Marley and her mother is Joy White, who was known for her hit single First Cut, which was produced by Donovan Germaine.
After leaving secondary school, Naz decided she would pursue a career in music and so she decided to study studio engineering. The disc jock said she was fascinated by the idea of being a disc jockey and entered this part of the music profession as a member of an all-female team on a sound system called Chemical X based in Meadowbrook. No longer a member of Chemical X, Naz is now part of a new sound called Gurl Power International.
She was taught the art of mixing by her good friend Pablo, who is deeply involved in the sound-system world. "I have learnt a lot from him. He told me that anybody can mix dancehall music but not everyone can mix different genres of music, so I try to practise that and it has helped me a lot," she said.
Reminiscing on the first time her team played out at an event, she said, "It was at Bembe and it was four of us as girls and we were very nervous but we created a big vibe, the dancers came up onstage and the vibes was just mad," she boasted.
As to her reason for entering the Heineken Green Synergy competition, DJ Naz explained, "I love mixing, and it is a competition which gives you the opportunity to really showcase your talent. It also gives you invaluable exposure which helps you to take your career to greater heights. I entered in 2008 but I didn't go through. This time around, I was more prepared, more confident; I have nothing to lose, really."
As to who she admires as disc jockeys, she said, "From the get-go, I rate DJ Sunshine. I saw Kurt Riley at some parties and him bad. Colin Hines is bad too. On the international scene, DJ Shorty is my favourite."
http://www.mediafire.com/?rjdzztnhnddDefence attorney representing the son of Justin O'Gilvie, the reputed right hand man and business associate of Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, yesterday made a habeas-corpus application on his behalf in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.
The attorney, Christian Tavares-Finson, argued that his client had been detained for too long a period without being charged.
The attorney, however, will have to wait until today to hear whether the resident magistrate will make an order instructing the police to either charge or release the young man by a set date.
The police say the young man, who is in his 20s, is believed to be linked to the May 23 theft of a police service vehicle, which was eventually set ablaze by thugs along Drummond Street in west Kingston.
The allegations are that a police team was travelling to the Kingston Public Hospital when they were met with gunfire and had to abandon the vehicle along Slipe Pen Road.
The police say they have information that young O'Gilvie was linked to the incident. When checks were made yesterday after the application was made by O'Gilvie's attorney, the court was told that the youngster would be placed on an identification parade soon. His attorney, however, said he had received no word of this planned ID parade.
The matter returns today.More than 700 rounds of ammunition and an illegal 9mm pistol were seized by the police in separate operations in Alligator Pond, Manchester and Spanish Town Road in Kingston yesterday.
Reports are that about 2 a.m., the lawmen conducted a special operation in the Alligator Pond community. During the operation, a white 1997 Honda Civic motor car with two men aboard was searched and the pistol along with a magazine containing fifteen 9mm rounds was discovered. The men were subsequently arrested and charged.
Detectives at the Asia Police Station are investigating.
In the second incident, detectives from the Flying Squad conducted a special operation between 4:30 and 6:30 a.m. It involved the search of an abandoned service station along Weymouth Drive in the vicinity of Spanish Town Road.
This search yielded 700 assorted rounds of ammunition. These included a .38 cartridge, six .380, twenty-five 7.62, twenty-six 12 gauge, forty-four 20 gauge and five hundred and ninety eight .22 rounds.
No one was arrested in connection with this seizure. Investigations continue.Russia will "always hate" US missile defences because it cannot match them, but that should not stand in the way of ratifying a new US-Russia nuclear arms treaty, Defence Secretary Robert Gates said yesterday.
In blunt language, with the administration's top diplomat sitting beside him, Gates told a Senate panel there is little prospect of Washington and Moscow seeing eye-to-eye on missile defences.
"There is no meeting of the minds on missile defences," Gates said. "The Russians hate it. They've hated it since the late 1960s. They will always hate it, mostly because we'll build it and they won't."
Testifying together, Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton sought to calm fears voiced by John McCain about the arms treaty, dubbed New START, which includes a provision that the Arizona Republican said limits future US missile defence options.
Clinton noted the Russian government's statement that it reserves the right to withdraw from the New START treaty if it feels threatened by an expansion of American defences against ballistic
missiles.
"But that is not an agreed upon view. That is not in the treaty," Clinton told the Senate Armed Services Committee. "It's the equivalent of a press release, and we are not in any way bound by it."
Clinton and Gates, joined by Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Mike Mullen and Energy Secretary Steven Chu, showed a united front in the administration's push for Senate ratification. They argued that the pact, while not perfect, enhances US security without constraining the shape of the US nuclear force.
"It does not infringe upon the flexibility we need to maintain our forces, including bombers, submarines and missiles in the way that best serves our own national security interest," Clinton said.A Jamaican man, whose initials were released as R.A.M ,was arrested in St Maarten on Monday following police investigations into an armed robbery that occurred in Pointe Blanche, a middle-class community on the southern end of the Dutch colony.
According to the police report, the circumstances leading to the Jamaican's arrest began about 9:15 a.m. Monday when a police patrol received a report that an armed robbery had just taken place. The victim, a local businessman with initials O.L.M. was robbed at gunpoint by two men, one of whom was armed with a shotgun.
The businessman was robbed of his white Suzuki van. According to the witness, inside the van were several bank-deposit bags, bank books, two briefcases and several cases of magazines.
high-speed chase
During the investigation, police received information that the suspects fled the scene in a black Hyundai Sonata. Subsequently, police spotted the vehicle being driven at high speed on the W.G. Buncamper Road. A high-speed chase ensued and eventually ended in the parking lot of a local school in a community called Hope Estate.
Cornered, the suspects unsuccessfully tried to escape by reversing their getaway car, slamming it into the patrol car. The two suspects - D.A.H. from St. Martin (the French side of the island) and M.R. from the Dominican Republic - were arrested on the spot. Police also recovered a sawed-off shotgun and several rounds of ammunition from the vehicle.
As detectives continued their investigation, they unearthed a connection between the suspects held and the Jamaican, who was eventually arrested and taken into police custody. There is no word yet on when the suspects will appear in court.Singer Terry Linen, correct name Nee Kiplin Simpson, was recently released after he was taken into police custody last week for questioning in connection with a murder which occurred in St Elizabeth last month.
In a release issued by Linen's management team, it said: 'Terry Linen is not suspect to any foul play and is not involved in any further suspicion or investigation in this matter. This comes as no surprise to Terry Linen's local and international fan base from across the globe who know and love Terry for his Christian based and heart felt lyrics.'
Adeka 'Newsman' Miller who is Linen's manager says, "It is a very unfortunate circumstance for an artiste's reputation when a situation like this occurs that reflects nothing of the artiste's character or nature."
"When someone is imitating an artiste's image and music through things like selling imitation dubplates and collecting money under false pretence and something like this happens, then automatically that innocent artiste becomes someone to be questioned, he added."
Since a few days have passed since Linen has been home, his feelings have softened as he offers condolences to the family as they grieve and he prays that justice will be served .
Spoken in Linen's upbeat, positive patois, he states that "This is just one of them unfortunate things and Jah gives us many challenge to face."
Newsman (Linen's manager) also wants to note that all business including dub plate production is done only and exclusively through himself. Any and all other business that is executed through the use and representation of Terry Linen's music outside of this manner is strictly done through imitation and fraud.
Among his upcoming projects, Linen is slated to be on an upcoming 11-island tour in support of a charity yet to be disclosed. Terry Linen and his management team are happy that all association and speculation in this matter is put to rest and he can move forward and continue sharing his positive music and energy worldwide.

Popular local singer Aisha Davis is now before the court after she was accused of beating up a co-tenant at her house.
Davis appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday after she was charged with unlawful wounding.
Her attorney entered a not guilty plea when her client appeared before Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey.
The complainant told the court that she and Davis are co-tenants and share a kitchen together at their home. She informed the court that she was assaulted after she had a disagreement over the usage of kitchen utensils and the division of kitchen space.
The complainant further told the court that Davis often spoke in a condecending manner, as if she is a child. She alleged that on the day in question, Davis attacked her and knocked her partially unconscious.
The complainant said that she was also dragged along the ground, pinned to the ground and repeatedly punched in the face while she was on the ground.
The complainant said she was later rescued by her boyfriend who was elsewhere in the house, but came to her aid after he heard the uproar. She said when she regained full consciousness, her boyfriend told her that he had to remove a knife from her attacker's grasp.
The Grants Pen police are said to have been called to the location.
When the matter appeared in court yesterday, the complainant's medical was not yet available so the matter was postponed.
Davis had her bail extended and is to return to court on July 8. She also had to have her fingerprints taken by the police.
Davis was a member of the Ashe Performing Arts Ensemble, however, she is better known for her collaboration hit with Anthony B in 2003, Someone Loves You Honey. She also has a current single with Aidonia called My Heart is Hers. The New York Times grabbed some of Eminems precious time for a new interview in Sundays magazine. A more tolerant Marshall Mathers talks about his broken relationship with his mother, his support for gay marriage, the current state of hip-hop, and why he doesnt want to go back to rehab. Read the excerpts below.
Does Slim Shady, your raping and killing alter ego, still exist? Or have you split with him?
Shady still exists. But I dont think the subjects on this record call for, you know, bring the chainsaws and axes out and murder everyone on this record. There was so much stuff like that off the last record that I felt like I was starting to run it into the ground. I think consciously I went in a different direction with this record.
Even your mother sued you for defamation. Is she still in Detroit, where she raised you as a single mom?
Im not sure, to be honest. Itd be very hard to repair that relationship.
Youve been accused of writing gay-bashing lyrics in the past. Would you like to see gay marriage approved in Michigan, where you live?
I think if two people love each other, then what the hell? I think that everyone should have the chance to be equally miserable, if they want.
Is this the new, 37-year-old tolerant you?
Its the new tolerant me!
Compared with other rappers, you are often praised for your complex rhyme schemes. Do you read poetry?
I dont think Ive ever read poetry, ever. Im not really book-smart.
Where did you go to rehab?
The first time I went it was in Brighton, Mich. The second time I didnt go to rehab. I just went to a regular hospital. I detoxed in the hospital, and then I came home. I couldnt go back to rehab. I felt like I was Bugs Bunny in rehab.
What does that mean?
When Bugs Bunny walks into rehab, people are going to turn and look. People at rehab were stealing my hats and pens and notebooks and asking for autographs. I couldnt concentrate on my problem.
Billboard magazine has ranked you as the best-selling artist of the past decade. What do you do with all your money?

STAR investigations have revealed that several dons, despite not being placed on the police recent wanted lists, have gone into hiding because of fear.
The thugs, although not even of major interest to the security forces, are taking no chances and have left the areas they control to seek safe haven in other places.
They are mostly from communities in the Corporate Area and St Catherine.
One area leader for a community in east Kingston, who claims to have no connection with west Kingston, told THE STAR that since the operations of the security forces he has sought refuge in upper St Andrew.
"Mi deh up inna di hills wid mi people dem a cool out ... Mi naw lie it look like di babylon (police and soldiers) dem a go fi everybody eventually so mi naw tek no chance. Mi drop een a my place now and then but mi nuh too stay deh," he said.
Another area leader who 'governs' a section of the Kingston 13 area in St Andrew said he too has limited his presence in the community as he fears being held by the police even though he claims there is no reason for them to have an interest in him.
"Mi nuh have nuttin wid wah a gwaan but yu cyaa tek nuh chance wid dem eno worst a state of emergency and dem hold yu as long as dem feel like. Mi jus gwaan hold a vibes pon a different ends and a watch dem ..," he reasoned.
"Yu cyaa too sure eno so a betta mi safe than sorry. Is about a week now mi nuh go a my scheme eno," one St Catherine area leader also claimed.
In a recent interview with THE STAR, CIB Head, Assistant Commissioner Les Green, said the police were aware that criminals were trying to evade the attention of the police and begged for residents islandwide to assist the police by giving information upon noticing strange faces in their communities.
While talking to THE STAR regarding the situation, another police source was quick to ridicule the actions of the men who he dubbed 'toy soldiers'.
"Yu nuh see seh a toy soldier dem. A dem same one gwaan like seh dem big and bad and now dem a run and a hide from wi. It really funny to me mi naw lie," the officer reasoned. The Supreme Leader has ordered state-run television not to broadcast live games, and to only screen highlights of North Korea's victories.
The ruling means that 99 per cent of the country's 29 million population will not be able to find out who wins the competition unless the 350-1, outsiders win it.
Games between other nations will be banned from the airwaves, while any highlights of North Korea's matches will be heavily edited to ensure that they look like the better team.
All advertising in the stadiums will also be blurred out along with opposition fans, The Sun newspaper reported.
Mike Breen, author of highly-respected book Kim Jong-il: North Korea's Dear Leader, said: "Like everything else there, the regime will have complete control over the World Cup.
"North Korea will not pay for the TV rights, which means they will not be able to screen live games on state television. They are more likely to get footage from South Korea and then it will be heavily edited to suit the regime.
"Only the ruling elite with access to other satellite channels will be able to watch games involving other countries.
"The majority of the population will have to make do with very one-sided highlights packages hours, and possibly even days, after the game. Any loss will either be ignored or given the smallest of mentions.
"Once North Korea are knocked out, I would be amazed if there were any mention of the World Cup at all."
It is the first time that North Korea has qualified for the World Cup in 44 years.
The last time they qualified was in England in 1966 when they pulled off one of the biggest shocks by beating Italy 1-0 to reach the quarter finals.
I would never imagined in my lifetime that this was even possible, a black man buying Gatwick Airport ! Then again, I never thought that I'd see a black man in the Whitehouse either!! I was pleasantly surprised to learn about this story, Nigerian born Adebayo Ogunlesi will be the new owner of Gatwick airport!! I want to take this moment to acknowledge and congratulate Mr. Ogunlesi on what he's doing and say that he is a huge inspiration and living proof of what IS possible!!! I thank Wunmi for the "tip-off" on this! x Now, the question is, why did the mainstream media kept this so very, very quiet? I was even more surprised that not even the BBC covered this story, or any of the other major news networks including CNN! "What's that all about?" I asked myself and thought it quite strange that a man, Adebayo Ogunlesi spends over a billion pounds on an international airport in one of the world's major cities, the city that's recognised as the financial centre of the world and there's no real coverage?? - Strange!! Well you don't need to go far to get details on this one, it's just a click away...More Details |
During a recent trip to the area, residents told tales of what they have been through the last few weeks but afterwards spoke of the actions of some of the women while describing it as shocking, but understandable.
"A di same man dem weh dem did a seh a bomb dem up eno ...Yes mi dear, dem woman yah nuh easy, dem dung yah all a pop big fight ova di soldier dem now," one resident, who claimed to have witnessed one of the recent encounters, said.
THE STAR heard there were at least two fights in the last two weeks but nobody has been seriously injured.
In the last incident, one female reportedly got jealous after seeing an 'enemy' of hers sitting and chatting with a soldier.
There was reportedly a subsequent altercation and both women argued openly as to who the soldier wanted, and even threw blows at each other. The soldier over who they were fighting reportedly had to step in to quell the fracas.
While in the company of a group of at least six women, THE STAR was told that those who have resorted to having relations with members of the security forces have done so because their lovers are gangsters who have fled the community, leaving them behind.
"Yuh a laugh like a joke thing, mi have fren weh deh wid soldier and mi ask har how she do it and she seh har man gone and she need har fix up," another resident claimed, as those around her began laughing at her subsequent comments.
"Bway, to some extent yu can't even wrong dem because a pure woman deh a west Kingston now, most a di man dem run weh and dem probably naw come back, suh di woman dem affi fight fi wah dem want," she continued.
When contacted by THE STAR, senior members of the security forces said that they were unaware of such reports. However, a STAR reporter who pretended to be a resident was told over the weekend by a soldier that he was aware of such acts.
The soldier even requested that he be given a 'link' to a girl.
"Bway, a nuff sexy gyal deh bout ya eeh hothead. Buss mi pon a link nuh? Yu look like a gallis," he said during a short conversation.
On Labour Day, the security forces launched a massive offensive on the community and are still carrying out operations there.
Shortage of men an issue in communityToday we went to Jamaica. I hate Jamaica. It flippin SUCKS! First of all, we woke up late, so we missed a couple hours of Jamaica. No big loss. I wish we would have just stayed in bed. As soon as you get off the boat there's about 20 people trying to give you a cab ride. If they're not trying to give you a ride, they're trying to sell some god awful handmade jewelry to you. If you say no, and keep walking...they FOLLOW you for about half a damn mile and badger and har**** you! These people are damn money hungry podunk idiot asses. I thought Nassau was bad. Jamaica is so much worse. It's like you're Donald Trump...and you walk through the projects...every damn one of those imbreeds wants some of you money. I'm so pissed with Jamaica that I barely took any pics and I didn't even buy a souvenir. There were invalids sittin ON the sidewalk....just chillin with their hands out. Just begging for money. We broke down and took a cab to Dunn's River Falls. So not impressed with that either. Too many damn people. I guess it's like the Disney world of this slum country. So..we took like 3 pictures and left. We told our cab driver that we wanted to eat traditional Jamaican food, that didn't cost an arm and a leg. Well ladies and gentlemen...he took us tot the McDonald's of Jamaica. We had to walk to the counter, and order a meal by it's number. So fast food. We decided that we were fed the **** up with Jamaica so we decided to walk back to the pier. It takes about 10-15 minutes. On the way....we got asked 4 times if we wanted tot buy reefer...we were har****ed by people wanting to braid our hair...some guy dropped a dirty pocket knife and it came within millimeters of harmony's foot. Jamaica just isn't safe. We want to come home so bad. We had one good day on this whole vacation. I enjoyed the Grand Cayman..but...I don't think I'll ever want to leave the US again. Harm said from now on she'll even stand during the pledge of allegience. Vacation sucks, Carnival sucks, and this blog is already starting to piss me off.
An Old Harbour Bay, St Catherine resident is now recovering after he had to be hospitalised when a large pig bit him on his penis.
Reports reaching The Star are that the incident occurred recently.
The injured man is said to have spent almost a week in hospital after he was bitten by the animal.
"Bwoy mi nuh know a wah happen mek the wicked hog bite the man," said a witness.
The Star learnt that the man, who is the owner of the animal, went into the pig pen after deciding that he wanted to sell one. It is understood that the owner and another man held the pig, however, the owner who held it closer to its head was bitten twice.
"The hog dat him a try fi sell got violent and bite him pon him private, a straight hospital and a nine days him spend a hospital," a resident of Old Harbour Bay said.
The residents told THE STAR that they are baffled as to why the animal got so violent. "Dats why some people are against eating pork as hog eat anything it ketch," another concerned resident said.
When contacted the Old Harbour Bay police said that they were aware of the attack.
Claude Ruey, a swiss lawmaker of the liberal party watches the world cup soccer match between Spain and Switzerland during a debate in Switzerland's parliament, on Wednesday June 16, 2010 in Bern, Switzerland. The lawmakers debated on a new health insurance law.
RIO DE JANEIRO Shirley Cassares, watching Brazil's first World Cup match on a giant video screen set up on Copacabana beach, wobbled through a boozy samba and unveiled the Great Secret to her nation's sporting success.
"It's internal human heat! Other nations, they don't have the internal human heat we get from being with one another," she said, raising her voice above the horns, whistles, music and mayhem created by 10,000 people cheering Brazil as it defeated North Korea 2-1 on Tuesday.
"You see it in our team. They feed off one another, they need one another, and they play beautifully because of it," said Cassares, 52, pointing to the throng around her.
Actually, Brazilians aren't the only ones feeling the heat.
World Cup fever has gripped the planet, and fans in each nation are celebrating the event in unique ways: Iraqis are once again gathering in groups to watch, relieved that violence has subsided since the last tournament in 2006. Fans in Somalia risk bans by Islamic extremists just for tuning in. Even North Koreans - normally shut off from the rest of the world - saw their team play, albeit a few hours after the game was over.
Brazil - the global superpower of the Jogo Bonito, or "the beautiful game" as the sport is known around the world - will host the next World Cup, in 2014.
But the country is focused on winning this year's contest, and Brazilians are filled with anxiety about their team's chances.
Yet they also have the perfect antidote to those worries.
"It's a gigantic party! It's bigger than Carnival! It's football and Carnival combined!" exclaimed 26-year-old Rodrigo Nobre, his Brazil shirt and shorts covered in sand. "It's a time for coming together, forgetting our worries and cheering on our national team!"
With that, he turned back to the video screen on the beach and gave an agonized scream as an early offensive attack by Brazil yielded no goal.

There is no beach party in Somalia.
Islamic fundamentalists who control stretches of the African nation have banned watching the World Cup.
"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.
"We don't want them to waste their precious time and resources on un-Islamic matches, especially during prayer time," he said.
Hizbul Islam, just like its ally, the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab group, has imposed a strict version of Islam in areas under its control in southern and central Somalia.
Arus said that his group, contrary to earlier reports, is not arresting people for watching the World Cup or taking any other action against them beyond chasing them away from TVs.
He said militiamen chased dozens of fans from a video hall in the western town of Afgoye, where men and women mingled Saturday to watch the Argentina-Nigeria match in the first World Cup tournament held on African soil.
In Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, fans have been forced to relocate temporarily to the slice of the city under government control, where they can cheer without fear.

Perhaps no country has gone through more change since the last World Cup than Iraq, where in 2006 the tournament played out as the nation was gripped by intense sectarian *lo**shed.
Not so this year.
About 50 men sprawled on plastic chairs, smoked water pipes and sipped tea as they watched Brazil play North Korea on an overhead TV at a central Baghdad cafe.
Private generators worked overtime to make up for frequent power outages and to keep the TV and electric fans running as the nighttime temperature soared above 90 (32 Celsius).
Only one glitch: an interrupted satellite signal forced everyone to miss the first 10 minutes of the game.
"We sat with our heads in our hands until they fixed it," said Ali Hatem, 24, with a laugh. "But it's worth it. This place is better than sitting at home where there isn't any electricity."
Cafe owner Ahmad Nouri scooped ice cream and ordered waiters to work faster as the sound of cheers mingled with that of dominoes slapping against tables.
"It makes me so happy to see people feel comfortable and enjoy the game," Nouri said. "We were deprived of this luxury during the last World Cup."
Four years ago, Iraq was ridden with sectarian warfare and people largely avoided public venues, fearing bombs or ambushes.
Lighting up a cigarette, Emad al-Zubaidi, 54, said, "People can breathe and see what's out there now."
Violence has dropped sharply, although Iraqi security forces stood guard near the cafe, evidence of the continued danger.
"Don't worry!" Hatem said. "One day Iraq will be in the World Cup, and we will even host it!"

North Korean fans got the chance to see their team in the World Cup for the first time in 44 years - but had to wait almost a day after the game was played.
The Tuesday afternoon starting time in South Africa translated to 3:30 a.m. Wednesday in Pyongyang. So the state-controlled TV station - the only one in the nation - delayed the broadcast of the game with Brazil until a more popular time slot Wednesday night.
Two announcers provided mostly dry and matter-of-fact commentary. But there were hints of excitement in their voices when North Korea scored in the second half, leading them to note their team was playing "on equal terms" with mighty Brazil. A group of diners watching in a Pyongyang restaurant cheered and applauded Ji Yun Nam's goal.
On the Korean peninsula, divided since the 1950-53 Korean War, the sport is doing its part to unite the North and the South: it is the first time teams from both nations are playing in the same World Cup.
The Japan-based Choson Sinbo newspaper - considered a mouthpiece for the North Korean government - reported earlier this week after South Korea's 2-0 win over Greece that citizens of the communist country "cheered the South Korean team with no exception."
Malaysia-based Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union came to an agreement with FIFA, the sport's world governing body, to beam the games into North Korea free of charge. It's up to the state network, however, to decide what to show.
"We want them to see what life is on the other side of the curtain," said John Barton, sports director of the broadcasting union.
Just over the border in South Korea, as many as 1 million "Red Devils" - as the team's fans there are known - have poured into the streets of Seoul for matches.
Such enormous rallies have been a tradition in South Korea ever since 2002, when its team surprisingly reached the semifinals.
Red, naturally, is the clothing color of choice. Women have fashioned the national flag into skimpy tube tops and miniskirts. Men are using it as a toga.
South Korea's Justice Ministry is turning a blind eye to a 9 p.m. curfew for the nation's 50,000 convicts on game nights.
Monks are holding World Cup parties in Buddhist temples, fans are taking in matches on a man-made floating island on Seoul's Han River, and even death itself is no deterrent to watching a match. Local media reported that mourners gathered at wakes in some Seoul hospitals could be seen in front of TV sets, cheering on South Korea.

Serbian economists estimate it loses up to $28 million for every World Cup match the national team plays due to absent workers. An employers' association is suggesting that companies reduce working hours to avoid other such walkouts.
Despite the widespread poverty and sour economy, Serbia's cafes are packed with people during the games, no matter who is playing.
There may be a silver lining in the dark cloud of lost productivity, however: Serbia lost its first game to Ghana, 1-0.
Some say a poor showing by the team could lower interest in the tournament and return employees to work, but 42-year-old lawyer Blagoje Ciric, sipping a beer on a hot Belgrade morning earlier this week, has his doubts. Especially since Serbia plays powerful Germany on Friday.
"I have little hope now that Serbia will beat anyone if it didn't beat Ghana," he said. "Still, I'll watch other games. Football is football!"
In Germany, known for its industriousness and strong work ethic, the great debate is whether employees will be allowed to watch while on the job.
Companies from Alliance to GRG Services GmbH say they will allow people to watch, and even project the game onto screens set up in conference rooms.
"Those who aren't interested in football are, of course, welcome to keep working," Stephan Schwarz, head of GRG Services, told the mass circulation daily Bild.
Even Berlin's prestigious JFK school is organizing places for students to watch on campus - provided they get all their work done first.
Berliners who find themselves on the city's public transit system can follow the game because the capital's transportation authority BVG will be announce the goals in buses and subway trains and flash them on signs at bus stops and in stations.

Betty Koumba didn't have electricity in her home in Libreville, Gabon - at least not until the World Cup.
Koumba was desperate to watch the games in her new house, which had yet to receive electricity nine months after she moved in. But the Gabonese civil servant finally secured a $3,000 bank loan two days before last week's opening ceremony to buy her hookup.
Getting power in this West African nation isn't as easy as simply calling up the electric company. The nearest power line was a mile (1.6 kilometers) away, and Koumba was told she would have to buy the cables to link into it herself.
Her brother pitched in with another $3,000, Neighborhood youths swarmed in to help connect the lines, slinging it across makeshift power poles made of scrap wood.
And just a few hours before the opening match Koumba's 20-inch TV - formerly nothing more than a piece of living room furniture - roared to life with the broadcast.
"We're celebrating two events: the World Cup and the arrival of electricity in our house," said her brother, Armand, who lives in the same powerless part of Gabon's capital.
Koumba's home has since become so packed that she had to move the TV onto her terrace outside to accommodate all the visitors.
Just one rule: They must bring their own chair, because Koumba doesn't have enough for all.
A South African man who wanted to watch a World Cup football match instead of a religious program was beaten to death by his family in the northeastern part of the country, police said Thursday.
David Makoeya, a 61-year-old man from the small village of Makweya, Limpopo province, fought with his wife and two children for the remote control on Sunday because he wanted to watch Germany play Australia in the World Cup. The others, however, wanted to watch a gospel show.
"He said, 'No, I want to watch soccer,"' police spokesman Mothemane Malefo said Thursday. "That is when the argument came about.
"In that argument, they started assaulting him."
Malefo said Makoeya got up to change the channel by hand after being refused the remote control and was attacked by his 68-year-old wife Francina and two children, 36-year-old son Collin and 23-year-old daughter Lebogang.
Malefo said he was not sure what the family used to kill Makoeya.
"It appears they banged his head against the wall," Malefo said. "They phoned the police only after he was badly injured, but by the time the police arrived the man was already dead."
All three were arrested Sunday night, but Lebogang was released on 1,500 rand ($200) bail on Tuesday, Malefo said, and the other two are still being held in custody.
Malefo said the mother and son will reappear in the local Seshego Magistrates Court on July 27.
Makoeya was buried on Saturday.
"He was always a happy man, never violent," Makoeya's nieces, Miriam and Anna, told the Daily Sun newspaper. "On Saturday, we saw him the last time at the funeral."
The World Cup, which is being played in Africa for the first time, started Friday and runs through July 11. Although most the tickets for the 64-game tournament have been sold, many in South Africa are too poor to attend matches.
The Barbadian beauty, Rihanna, touched down in the Caribbean today, it's been a hell of a week for the sexy songstress, from rocking the Staples Center with Eminem to jet setting back to Barbados for some much needed rest.
Rihanna has been touring for a couple months now and it's finally time for some good old fashion r&r. It must be exhausting when your flying from country to country selling out arenas and tearing down shows, so now it's time for RiRi to get some much needed rest and recharge her batteries. Hopefully when Rihanna comes back we'll see a new look from the "Go Hard" diva. Either way she' going to be dope, check out Rihanna touching down in Barbados.
Man breaks house to watch TV | |||
Tells court he didn't want to steal anything SHELDON WILLIAMS, STAR Writer A man claimed that he broke into a house recently not to steal anything but to watch the television inside. The accused, Wayne Thompson, was charged with house breaking with intent. He pleaded guilty when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday to answer to the charge. Persons in court were amused by the tale when Thompson, 22, from a Rae Town address in Kingston, said that even though the residents of the house were unknown to him, he was interested in watching their television. remanded Thompson also told the court that he was gainfully employed for at least four years at a sponge factory and he wanted to avoid being sentenced to prison for his action. When asked by Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey why she should reconsider sentencing him to prison, Thompson replied; "I'll be good", which attracted more laughter from the court. Thompson was remanded in custody until June 30 when a probation officer should be assigned. He also had to submit his fingerprints to the police. |

Jahmiel 'Spragga' Johnson, the man charged in connection with shooting deejay Cobra, will appear in the Gun Court on Friday.
The accused man had previously appeared before Resident Magistrate Marcia Dunbar-Green on June 8 in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court. He was remanded until the next court date. Allegations are that on May 11, Cobra, whose real name is Ewart Brown, drove into Braeton Phase One in St Catherine.
It is reported that he went into the community and was attacked. It is alleged that the incident took place when the lights from the vehicle in which he was travelling, shone on some men in the community. He was shot in the upper body and was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital.
Investigations by the police led to Johnson's arrest. He was charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition and shooting with intent.
