The shooting occurred at 4:12 am, when three shots were fired into a vehicle at the Texaco Gas Station at Mary Brown's corner. As the victim tried to drive away, three more shots were fired, and the victim's vehicle crashed nearby on Mannings Hill Road.

Freshly minted 100m World champion Usain Bolt is delighted to have regained the title he lost two years ago, but admitted disappointment at not testing his own 9.58-second world record in the 100m final at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics inside the Luzhniki Stadium yesterday.
"Overall, it was good. I can't complain; it was a good run," Bolt said before noting that soreness in his legs from the previous round changed his priority to simply winning the gold medal without injuring himself.
"The world record? I thought about it. I wanted to come here and run as fast as possible, but after the semi-final, my legs felt a little sore. But for me, it was better to be safe than sorry, so I came just to execute and win and that's what I did," Bolt told The Gleaner.
Bolt, who won in a season's best 9.77 seconds ahead of American Justin Gatlin, 9.85, and Nesta Carter, 9.95, does not believe his win was easy, but said he was always confident of victory.
"I never look at things as being easy," he said. "I work hard. I put in the hard work and that's why I am a champion. I push myself through pain and that's why I am a champion."
Weak part of race
Bolt also noted that his main focus was to ensure that he didn't have too much work to do after the first 50 metres, which is more often than not, the weaker part of his race.
"Coming in, I was confident that I could win this race. I knew that the first 50m was going to be important. I had to make sure that I was into the race and I knew that my last 50m would take me home," said Bolt.
Bolt has now won eight medals at the IAAF World Championships - six gold and two silver medals - joining Michael Johnson (eight gold medals) as the second most successful male medal winner at the games behind Carl Lewis (eight gold; one silver; one bronze), who has 10.
Bolt also took time out to thank the Jamaican fans who have descended on Moscow to support the team, pointing out that he is not surprised by the less-than-impressive crowds that have so far turned up at the stadium.
"I can't say I was surprised (by poor crowds). I don't know how big track and field is in Russia, but I give thanks to the people that come out and give support," Bolt said.
"There were a lot of Jamaicans in the stands, which I really appreciate and I thank them for coming out to support us. Not every country is going to be big on track and field. It's my duty and (that of) every other athlete to go out and compete at our best so that next time, we will see a full stadium," Bolt added.
The Jury of Appeals of the IAAF World Championships in Athletics says it has rejected an appeal by Jamaican officials, after 400m hurdler Kaliese Spencer had been disqualified after crossing the line first in her heat earlier today.
Spencer, the defending Diamond League winner in the event, was judged to have carried her trail leg around the second hurdle as opposed to over it, triggering rule 168.7 (a), which notes, "Trailed left/right leg below the horizontal plane of the top of hurdle at the instant of clearance."
Jamaican team officials Trevor 'TC' Campbell (team leader), Maurice Wilson (technical leader) and Michael Clarke (head coach) filed an appeal, which was later dismissed by the Jury of Appeals.
"An incident occurred in Heat 1 of the Women's 400m Hurdles where Jamaican athlete Kaliese SPENCER (bib number 524) who crossed the line in first position but was disqualified under rule 168.7 (trailing leg)," read the report on the incident.
"Video evidence was examined, the Jamaican Team not satisfied, and filed an Appeal to the Jury. The Jury of Appeal met and rejected the Jamaican appeal. The results stands."
There was some degree of confusion as reports had surfaced earlier that the Jury had in fact thrown out the Jamaicans' appeal, while team officials stated that there was in fact no decision and that they were awaiting video evidence.
Campbell told The Gleaner that the management team will be making a statement on the matter soon.

Jamaica's rookie quarter-miler Stephenie McPherson left the Luzhniki Stadium track in disappointment despite qualifying for the 400m final at the IAAF World Championships of Athletics, in her first taste of senior international competition.
In her semi-final, ran earlier today, McPherson came off the final turn in front of American Francena McCorory, 49.86, and Russia's Antonina Krivoshapka,49.99, but ended up crossing the line in third place, also with a time of 49.99.
The result meant that McPherson, who is conditioned by Stephen Francis at the MVP Track Club, like her compatriot Novlene Williams-Mills, booked her spot to tomorrow's 12:15pm (Jamaica time) final as one of the fastest non-automatic qualifiers.
However, the youngster frowned on her run, vowing to do better in tomorrow's medalround
"I thought I had that race. I didn't realise that anyone was that close, I am really upset," McPherson told The Gleaner shortly after her event. "But I am in the final and that was what I wanted so I will just have to come and do better there. Anything can happen once you are in the final."
McPherson is the fastest Jamaican in the 400m this year with a time of 49.92 seconds.
Usain Bolt heads into today's second day of the IAAF World Championships in Athletics as the possible saving grace of a sport in turmoil.
With the men's 100m semi-finals and final set to highlight activities inside the Luzhniki Stadium today, track and field, at least for a little over nine seconds, will forget its problems, amid the latest doping scandals that have rocked a sport which was just beginning to reclaim lost trust.
Bolt booked his spot in today's semi-final, which gets going at 10:05 a.m. (Jamaica time), with an easy 10.07 seconds win in his heat yesterday.
The double Olympic champion and world record holder is expected to progress from there to the 12:50 p.m. final, where he is strongly favoured to win his eighth individual gold medal at this level.
"I am looking forward to it," Bolt told The Sunday Gleaner after yesterday's win. "It was all about getting through to the next round so I just took it easy and made it through.
"For me, I just want to come in here and do something special, and if that gets more persons interested in the sport, then that's a good thing," he had said when asked a couple days earlier about the possibility of a world-record assault.
Truth is, in this - one of its darkest hours - the entire track and field world is also looking for something special from the big Jamaican.
In 2008, Bolt, track and field's poster boy, was getting ready to unleash his immense talent on the world at the Beijing Olympics and, in essence, breathe fresh life into a sport that needed resuscitation, after years of drug scandals sent a flatline on its reputation.
What the big Jamaican did back then - by smashing three world records on his way to a trio of gold medals with a welcomed and highly marketable brand of swagger - in essence did as much for himself as it did for the sport.
He created a much-needed distraction from the suspicions that clouded the sport, and as his reign continued and his empire rose all the way through to last year's Olympic Games, the Jamaican superstar has been leading, perhaps unknown to him, a campaign to return the sport's reputation.
Five years later, and with the IAAF's showpiece event now in full swing, it seems in all honesty that not much has changed.
Massive doping scandals among Russian and Turkish athletes, and the recent news that the fastest American ever, Tyson Gay, along with Jamaican star and one-time world record holder Asafa Powell, and four of his compatriots, including Olympic 100m silver medallist Sherone Simpson, had returned positive drug tests knocked the wind of a sport desperately trying to catch up on drug cheats.
This was compounded yesterday when top Trinidad and Tobago sprinter Kelly-Ann Baptiste withdrew from the Championships with reports that she has failed a drugs test.
The IAAF World Championships is already struggling to excite locals in the host city - Moscow - without top stars such as defending 100m champion Yohan Blake, 800m champion David Rudisha, and 200m champion Veronica Campbell-Brown, who is also facing doping charges.
However, every hero needs a nemesis, and perhaps this is where American Justin Gatlin comes in.
A tainted athlete himself after serving a four-year drug ban, Gatlin is the last man to beat Bolt, doing so weeks ago at the Diamond League meet in Rome on June 6.
Gatlin also eased through in qualifying, posting 9.99 in winning his heat, as did other Jamaicans Kemar Bailey-Cole, 10.02, Nesta Carter, 10.11, Nickel Ashmeade, 10.12, with USA's Mike Rodgers, 9.98, and Jimmy Vicaut (France), 10.06, also expected to be in the mix.
Track and field needs help. A big win from its biggest star would go a long way in providing the lifeline it needs.
A just-conducted survey has shown that the overwhelming majority of Jamaicans support the Government's ban on smoking in public.
The data collected by the National Council on Drug Abuse (NCDA) in a rapid assessment survey showed that 83.2 per cent of the 500 respondents believe that Minister of Health Dr Fenton Ferguson was on the right path by outlawing smoking in public places.
"The survey showed that (a) majority of the respondents are in support of the new regulations which ban smoking in public places, as they recognise that there are health benefits to be gained from this, both for the smoker and non-smoker," read a section of the report.
Just under 17 per cent of the respondents said they were not in agreement with the new regulations.
Three-city assessment
The rapid assessment was conducted in three city centres days after the ban went into effect.
These were Half-Way Tree, St Andrew (July 15); Port Antonio, Portland (July 30); and Montego Bay, St James (August 2).
The assessment was to capture the public's response to the implementation of tobacco-control regulations.
The NCDA also plans to conduct a survey in May Pen, Clarendon.
The 'smoking' survey sought to determine public awareness of the tobacco control regulations, knowledge of areas designated as public places/spaces, the level of support for the new regulations, and awareness of smoking-cessation programmes.
The summary of the rapid assessment survey noted that "awareness of public places could be improved as there are members of the public who remain unaware and, therefore, may be in breach of the law".
The survey revealed that similar proportions of respondents across parish capitals (between 82 and 85 per cent) were in support of the law; however, there were significant gender differences.
"A significantly higher proportion of females (90.5 per cent) than males (75.3 per cent) indicated they were in agreement with the law," read a section of the rapid assessment.
The survey also sowed that the smoking ban was well publicised.
"Respondents were asked if they were aware of the new tobacco regulations regarding smoking in public places. Overall majority of respondents, 97.2 per cent, reported that they were aware of the regulations."
The smoking ban took effect on July 15, with some sectors expressing concerns about its roll-out even though supporting the move in principle.
Ferguson subsequently announced a period of consultation until August 13; however, he has repeatedly stated that the ban will remain in place during this time.
According to Ferguson, the law will be applied against those who continue to smoke in specified places where it is illegal to do so, although the police have been asked to concentrate on promoting awareness and giving warnings.
"I know there are certain places where some people seem to believe that the smoking ban does not apply to them, but even in this time of consultation they must know that the law can be applied, it doesn't matter who you are or where you're from," said Ferguson at a recent groundbreaking ceremony for the refurbishing and upgrade of the Claremont Health Centre in St Ann.

Jamaicans are being urged to increase their disaster preparedness activities as the most active period of the 2013 hurricane season is now underway.
The appeal came from acting director of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) Richard Thompson, who says August and September have traditionally been the most active months of the season.
Forecasters have predicted that the 2013 hurricane season would be very active with a 70 per cent chance of producing up to 17 named storms, 10 of which could develop into hurricanes.
Thompson says the government is working to ensure that drains are properly cleaned and has urged residents to desist from dumping garbage in them.
He says now is the time for everyone to get involved in hurricane preparedness activities.
The disabled community could be in deep waters, as approximately 60 per cent of private institutions that cater to children with disabilities are on the verge of closing down.
Ruthlyn James, special educator and founder of the Adonijah Group of Schools for Intellectual Disabilities, yesterday told The Gleaner that it was a serious development which could have severe implications.
"Many of the private schools are having serious financial constraints and (are) facing closure, and it is getting worse. The cost of doctors alone is very high. A lot of these schools would want to open the doors to our children but at the end of the day, they have liabilities among other expenses," she lamented.
Scaling back for September
"For my institution, we cater to at least 100 students and the numbers are similar right across the board. Come September, we are looking to down-size the numbers because the financial constraints are becoming unbearable, and it's sad because quite a number of children will suffer if this actually happens," she declared.
Stating that it takes approximately $4 million to operate the institution for just one term, she called for a sense of urgency in dealing with the matter.
Hands-on intervention needed
"Last year, there was a lot of talk about things to be done but as the new school year approaches, I hope that efforts will be made to facilitate this community. There has to be more hands-on intervention because its not just the academics but a lot has to do with the development aspect," she said.
Chairperson of the Childhood/Special Education Committee at the Jamaica Teachers' Association, Dr Polly Bowes-Howell, stated that it will take a collaborated effort to keep the institutions running as the Government alone cannot do it.
"It is an urgent matter, the latest one we have on the list is Macam (McCam Child Development Centre) and there are others that are facing some serious challenges but we can't play the blame game, so I'm making a call to all stakeholders to get involved and see how best we can collaborate to make things better for our children," she pleaded.

Olympic 200m bronze medallist Warren Weir yesterday hailed the camaraderie among the Jamaican athletes for the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, which get under way tomorrow, noting that he believes it can only aid their performances inside the Luzhniki Stadium.
The Jamaicans enter the World Champion-ships shrouded by doping news after six athletes from the island tested positive for banned substances in recent weeks, including standout Veronica Campbell-Brown, Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson.
Missing several of its big names, many skeptics believe the team will struggle in Moscow, but the 200m standout sees a unified team, determined to leave a mark in the Russian city.
Weir, competing in his second international championships at the senior level after last year's Olympic Games, said that he has been encouraged by the vibe in the camp and thinks it will go a long way in settling the nerves of those, who are competing at this level for the first time.
"It's always one love among us. It's a young squad - a lot of us came up together from the Carifta and World Juniors stage, so it's a good vibe among everybody here," Weir told The Gleaner, hours before the start of the championship to be held at the Luzhniki Stadium.
Weir (19.79), the second fastest 200m athlete at the World Championships behind Bolt (19.73) after Tyson Gay's (19.74) provisional suspension for doping, added that he has adjusted well to the extra attention and demands since his Olympic run last year.
"My life has changed somewhat for the good. The bad part is that I cannot hide, but the good part is that it keeps you grounded and motivated because people expect you to repeat your performances from the past, like my performance from the Olympics, so it keeps me motivated," Weir said.
"Now I am just looking forward to the start of the competition. How fast do I see myself going? I think I will definitely be going much faster than 19.79," Weir said.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security is reporting successes in its policing of the Overseas Employment (farm work) programme to the United States and Canada.
"As we speak, two persons are in police custody for having taken the passports of unsuspecting persons and accepting money from them for placement on the overseas programme," said Alvin McIntosh, permanent secretary in the ministry.
"Additionally, the police have been cooperating with us and decisive action is being taken," he said. "For the past couple of weeks, the police have been very active and have interviewed a number of persons." Earlier this year, investigations by ministry officials found persons were collecting money from members of the public for placement in the programme. McIntosh noted the ministry would continue to sensitise the public about the scams.
"We are not going to be relenting on our efforts because we realise that it's a very serious state of affairs," he said. McIntosh was addressing more than 20 farm workers who just received their papers at the ministry's North Street offices yesterday. The event was also to formalise the partnership between the ministry and Caribbean Airlines, the main airline responsible for transporting the workers to North America.
Labour Minister Derrick Kellier also warned the workers to "keep it clean", referring to the practice of carrying illegal substances onboard. Kellier said the ministry had put in the necessary checks and balances to ensure no contamination of the system.
Usher issues a statement concerning his child's recent pool accident and near-death experience.
As we reported earlier this week, Usher's son suffered a near-fatal accident at his home in Atlanta, when he was swimming in his pool and his hand got caught in the drain trying to reach for a pool toy.
Following the incident, 5-year old boy was brought to the ICU, where he's been recovering since. While his mother and Usher's ex-wife Tameka Raymond was obviously upset with what happened, she has ignited a custody battle. Tameka filed for primary custody on Tuesday, and a hearing has already been set.
In the midst of this, Usher has spoken out for the first time since the accident. Usher released a statement, expressing his gratitude to his family and the men who saved his son's life.
"I would like to thank my Aunt Rena as well as the doctors and nurses who are working with us around the clock. I would especially like to thank the two men who saved my sons life, Eugene Stachurski and Ben Crews. They are true heroes and I am deeply grateful to them."
The r'n'b singer continued, "I am blessed and fortunate to say that my son Usher V is doing well and is recovering. I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of prayers, love and support for my familys well-being."
The Flying Squad and Half-Way Tree Police spent much of yesterday in search of clues into the theft of goods valuing in excess of $30 million at the Appliance Traders' Limited (ATL).
The police have confirmed a break-in at the Half-Way Tree Road store of ATL on Tuesday night.
Head of the Flying Squad Superintendent Cornwall 'Bigga' Ford confirmed that a team from his squad had started its probe.
Ford told The Gleaner that preliminary estimates suggest the missing appliances are estimated to be worth approximately $30 million.
A source close to the scene said the hoodlums entered the facility through a hole that they had carved out in the roof.
Staff members were greeted with the scene of the theft of an assortment of appliances when they arrived at the facility early yesterday.
The celebration of Jamaica's culture will always bring out the country's citizens in droves, and Tuesday's Jamaica Cultural Development Commission-produced Grand Gala did just that, creating a unified celebratory mood.
Those at the National Stadium learnt things as well as basked in the various successes of an island celebrating its 51st Independence.
The JCDC seemed determined to make the show different from previous years, and whether or not the organisation was successful was left up to the thousands dancing and tooting Vuvuzelas until the last act performed at minutes to 10 p.m.
The event had its ups and downs, with patrons either cheering wildly or staring in almost total silence.
Marcus Garvey said "A man without knowledge of his past is like a tree without root" and the JCDC definitely added some roots to its display, incorporating some authentic African drumming into the performances. The drumming was accompanied by dancers dressed in African clothing.
There was also narration between the different acts. The narration reinforced the importance of each presentation to Jamaican culture.
The backing band for the night was the iconic Fab Five, and they delivered a stellar display of reggae and rocksteady music. The band was also joined by Johnny Clark, who was asked for an encore after his song Move Out Of Babylon.
Following Clark's set, the narrators proclaimed Jamaicans a spiritual people and made way for gospel music led by Sister Pat.
She performed an engaging gospel medley accompanied by her dancers. It was noticeable that Sister Pat ended her set singing"everybody haffi know who Jesus is," a line picked up on and modified by the Rastafari performers who followed.
"Everybody haffi know who Jah Jah is," they chanted. Dressed in red, gold and green, they delivered an energetic set which also featured stilt walkers.
Reggae artiste Junior Reid sang his globally accepted hit single One *la*hd, getting patrons dancing and chanting the popular hook.
To push his message a step further, the artiste performed the song in Spanish, a move which was welcomed by the audience, which roared in approval.
Derrick Morgan gave a taste of the ska era. Looking a little frail, the icon, supported by his walking stick, belted hits from his classic catalogue.
Ken Boothe classics
Ken Boothe would then deliver a near-perfect set laced with classics likeThe Train Is Coming and Freedom.
Other notable sets came from past festival winners Roy Rayon, Tinga Stewart and The Astronauts.
They took patrons on a trip down memory lane, singing some timeless festival songs that were major hits.
The energy inside the national stadium was turned up a notch by Tiger, General Trees and Lady G, who led the dancehall tribute. And was later cooled down by reggae bands No-Maddz and Raging Fyah.
However, to put icing on the cake, and making Independence Gala 2013 a memorable event, the organisers brought in Jr Gong. He delivered song after song in true Marley fashion and gave patrons a surprise by introducing iconic reggae artiste Sizzla Kalonji, who gave a short, noisy display, which still managed to enchant the audience, with its members jumping and tooting vuvuzelas
BOLT WANTS TO BE LIKE MIKE
It's no longer enough to be the world's fastest man and a legend.
Sprint standout Usain Bolt has his eyes on even bigger things, and the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, which gets under way this week, is another important rung in his quest for domination.
"I want to be like Michael Jordan and the other greats," Bolt told The Gleaner.
In spite of the absence of his biggest rivals Yohan Blake, Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell, Bolt is keeping himself motivated by concentrating on his own targets and underlining that he wants to be listed among the upper echelons of sporting greats.
"I just want to set myself higher than the rest because I want to be among the greatest of all time and be discussed among greats like Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali and Pele," said Bolt.
"I want to be among these guys and, if I want to do that, I know that I have to keep pushing myself, regardless of who I am facing, so that when I retire, I will be remembered among the greatest sportsmen ever.
"I know that I have to keep setting the bar high," Bolt added.
Bolt, who holds world records in the 100m (9.58), 200m (19.19) and is a member of Jamaica's 36.84 world record 4x100m relay team, also became the first man to win back-to-back sprint doubles at the Olympic Games, with victories in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.
A global icon, Bolt is widely regarded as the greatest sprinter ever, but he believes that he will need to keep delivering at the highest level - on stages such as the IAAF World Championships - if he is to be truly accepted among the likes of basketball legend Michael Jordan, footballing great Pele and boxing's Ali.
Meanwhile, Bolt's coach, Glen Mills, is satisfied with the athlete's work coming into the championships, noting that the big Jamaican is fit and healthy.
"The lead-up to the (Jamaica) trials wasn't as good as I would have loved it, but since the trials, things have stepped up and he is on track," Mills said.
"Based on his last 100m in London, I would say that he is in pretty good shape," Mills added.
"He is healthy and I expect him to do extremely well, as he usually does in these championships."
Bolt posted a powerful 9.85 to win the 100m at the recent Sainsbury's London Anniversary Games.
He will face the likes of American Justin Gatlin and compatriots Nickel Ashmeade and Nesta Carter in the 100m, with Warren Weir, Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre and Ashmeade expected to keep him honest in the 200m.

STEVAN JOVETIC has completed his move from Fiorentina to Manchester City.
City struck a deal worth an initial £22.4m for the Montenegrin ace last night.
And the 23-year-old star has now passed a medical to join the Etihad revolution under new boss Manuel Pellegrini.
Jovetic, who will wear the No35 shirt, becomes City's fourth summer signing.
Jovetic scored 40 goals in 134 appearances during his five-year spell with Fiorentina, and had said farewell to La Viola prior to the switch.
"Florence will always have a place in my heart," he told firenzeviola.it. "It's not like I was only here for a day, I'm going to miss it.
"It's a beautiful city and I was happy with absolutely everything, particularly the people. It's only normal that they are a bit annoyed now, but I never said or did anything bad towards them, or towards Fiorentina.
"Just try to understand me. I am still young and I know that I gave everything for this shirt. I just wanted a change of scenery."
He added: "I'm delighted to be going to City, believe me. They are a huge club and they play in the Premier League. I really want to win something, and then I will also meet my great friend [Matija] Nastasic there."
He follows Sevilla pair Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo plus Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho through the door.

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Spain striker Alvaro Negredo from La Liga outfit Sevilla for a fee reported to be £20million.
The Spain international, who scored 25 goals in La Liga last season, is City's third summer signing, and their second from Sevilla, following the arrival of Jesus Navas and Fernandinho from Shakhtar Donetsk.
The 27-year-old forward will link up with the rest of the City squad for their ongoing pre-season tour of South Africa.
He should be joined by another new attacking signing, Stevan Jovetic, who is expected to complete his move from Fiorentina soon.
A former Real Madrid player, Negredo rose to prominence at Almeria, where he scored 32 goals in his first two seasons at the club.
Sevilla broke their transfer record to recruit the player in 2009 and Negredo went on to score 70 goals in 139 appearances for Los Rojiblancos.
Negredo's move to City has been known for a short time after Sevilla held a "farewell" press conference for the player, who admitted he is relishing a fresh challenge at the Etihad.
"I think in football there are stages. For four years I have been very happy, but I think my time was over here," he told the club's website.
"I am happy to go to a big team."
Negredo has 14 international caps to his name, in which he has scored six goals.

Sunderland have confirmed that Jozy Altidore has completed his move from AZ Alkmaar for an undisclosed fee - believed to be in the region of £8.5 million, which would be a record for a US player.
Altidore, 23, is Sunderland's sixth summer signing and has been brought in to boost Paolo Di Canio's attacking options, with the club heavily reliant on the goals of Steven Fletcher last season.
The USA international completed a medical on Monday and put pen to paper on a four-year deal on Tuesday, sealing his switch from Eredivise side and reigning Dutch Cup holders AZ.
"I'm thrilled to be here," Altidore told Sunderland's official website. "It's a fantastic club, I'm really excited about this season and I'm excited to be a part of it."
Altidore has previously played in the Premier League with Hull City, for whom he found the net just once while on loan from Villarreal in the 2009-10 campaign.
Since then, however, Altidore has gone from strength to strength and scored 23 Eredivise goals last season. He has bagged 17 goals in 60 appearances for the United States, the most recent of which saw him end a lengthy drought against Germany in June.
The forward joins goalkeeper Vito Mannone, defenders Valentin Roberge and Modibo Diakite, midfielder Cabral and winger David Moberg Karlsson as part of Di Canio's new-look squad at the Stadium of Light.

Manchester City have completed the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fernandinho for a fee of about £30m.
The 28-year-old, capped five times by Brazil, has signed a four-year deal, ending an eight-year stay in Ukraine.
Fernandinho is City's first summer signing while the club have also struck a deal for Sevilla winger Jesus Navas.
It is understood that Fernandinho waived about £4m owed to him by Shakhtar under the terms of his contract in order to complete the deal.
The Blues, who are still without a manager after Roberto Mancini left the club, are expected to appoint Malaga boss Manuel Pellegrini next week.
"My ambition here is to win the title. The team here is strong, and so is the greatness of the club and the supporters," said Fernandinho.
"Playing for a huge club in a huge league makes me so happy. I hope I will be able to repay City for what they have done for me.
"I know a lot about City. Ever since they expressed an interest in me, I have been learning more.
"I know I will face challenges but I am prepared for them. Every player at a high level faces pressure and must respond and I am ready for that too."
Fernandinho has Champions League experience and scored against Chelsea in the group stages of last season's competition.
The Ukrainian champions were eliminated in the last 16, losing 5-2 on aggregate to eventual runners-up Borussia Dortmund.
Fernandinho has tasted European success with Shakhtar however, as part of the team that won the Uefa Cup in 2009.
He previously played for Brazilian side Clube Atletico Paranaense, moving to Europe in 2005.
City's previous business with Shakhtar includes signing Fernandinho's compatriot Elano, who arrived at the Etihad Stadium from Ukraine in 2007, and Mexican forward Nery Castillo, who joined on loan in 2008.
City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak signalled last week that fresh investment was forthcoming as City attempt to regain the Premier League title that they lost to city rivals Manchester United last season.
"Will there be new signings? Absolutely. This is going to be a very important year for us," he said.
Former manager Mancini criticised the club's hierarchy last summer for failing to secure his first-choice transfer targets.

NICOLAS ANELKA last night became West Brom's top earner ever - before he hangs up his boots.
The French striker, 34, agreed a £5million, two-year Baggies deal which will pocket him £50,000 a week at The Hawthorns.
Anelka's new team-mate Youssouf Mulumbu jumped the gun by tweeting a snap of the Frenchman with an Albion away shirt before the Baggies formally announced the signing.
The former Chelsea star's deal is for 12 months with another year's option, if he decides to carry on in football.
However, it is nowhere near the £20m he got from Shanghai Shenhua in December 2011.
But it still beats Baggies' current highest-paid stars - Swede Jonas Olsson and Peter Odemwingie - who are both on £40k a week.
Anelka said: "I think I will finish in England, I'm happy here. I also hope that it will be with this club. I think this is the right club for me.
"I'm 34 years old now and I want to enjoy my football. I hope everything will be perfect.
"I hope we will be successful this year and hopefully we will reach Europe. We will try to do better than last season.
"That's why I'm here. When I spoke with the head coach, he said he wants to do better than last year. We will try our best to do that."
Anelka's relationship with Steve Clarke, who he also worked with at Chelsea, proved key in his decision to return to England from his short spell at Juventus.
He said: "I know the club and I know the head coach, which was very important for me.
"He knows how to use me on the pitch, which is important later on in your career.
"I know he likes to play football and that's why I signed here. He knows me and I know him. I also have friends in the changing room."
The sight of Anelka in an Albion shirt may come a relief to the clubs fans, who have previously seen him score five times in seven appearances against his new employers.
He added: "I've always liked West Brom.
"I have a lot of good memories of playing against West Brom, and now I have to do my best to score for West Brom.
"When I was playing for Chelsea, it was always tough to beat Albion.
"I don't know which position I will play. As long as I'm playing and enjoying my football, I'm happy.
Albion boss Clarke said: "This is a great boost. The more quality stars you can bring in the better and no one can question Nicolas' quality.
"I worked with him at Chelsea.
"He's got a great work ethic and if you add that to the obvious talent he's got I think he can be a top signing."

PAULINHO has completed his £17million move to Tottenham from Corinthians.
Spurs announced the deal this morning after the Brazilian completed a medical at the club.
Paulinho, 24, becomes Andre Villas-Boas' first summer recruit having been linked with a move to White Hart Lane for several months.
The midfielder said: "I want to thank Tottenham for believing in me. I am very happy and excited to have joined Spurs.
"It's a huge pleasure for my career to be at a club as big as Tottenham.
"I know it will be a huge challenge but I think I can help all my colleagues to succeed and give a lot of happiness to the supporters.
"The training centre is amazing and I'm very impressed about the conditions Tottenham offers to the players.
"I will focus on my job and use the facility as much as possible."
Paulinho has 17 international caps to his name and impressed throughout Brazil's recent Confederations Cup success.
The Samba star, who wants to model himself on Chelsea's Frank Lampard, also scored the equalising goal in his country's 2-2 draw with England last month.
Paulinho added: "We used to watch the Premier League in Brazil - including Tottenham - and this club has big players.
"I just want to help them to succeed here. It's nice to have another Brazilian in the squad and I'm excited to meet with Sandro and all the players.
"I brought the sun with me from Brazil and it's very welcome!
"I'm excited to live here in England and be successful and happy."

The Brazilian striker Neymar said he would be joining Barcelona after the Confederations Cup. The decision came a day after his Brazilian club, Santos, said it had accepted offers from Barcelona and Real Madrid, and that it was up to Neymar, 21, to pick where he wanted to play.
The 71-year-old Scot announced on Wednesday morning that he will stand down at Manchester United the end of the season after a trophy-laden 26-year reign, having celebrated his 49th and final piece of silverware with a 13th Premier League title this term.
Gill said: "I've had the tremendous pleasure of working very closely with Alex for 16 unforgettable years - through the treble, the double, countless trophy wins and numerous signings.
"We knew that his retirement would come one day and we both have been planning for it by ensuring the quality of the squad and club structures are in first-class condition.
"Alex's vision, energy and ability have built teams - both on and off the pitch - that his successor can count on as among the best and most loyal in world sport.
"The way he cares for this club, his staff and for the football family in general is something that I admire. It is a side to him that is often hidden from public view but it is something that I have been privileged to witness in the last 16 years.
"What he has done for this club and for the game in general will never be forgotten. It has been the greatest experience of my working life being alongside Alex and a great honour to be able to call him a friend."
Joel Glazer, joint chairman of the Manchester United board with brother Avie, pinpointed the 2008 Champions League final penalty shootout success over Chelsea as a highlight among the many memories.
He said: "Alex has proven time and time again what a fantastic manager he is but he's also a wonderful person.
"His determination to succeed and dedication to the club have been truly remarkable. I will always cherish the wonderful memories he has given us, like that magical night in Moscow."
Ferguson will take on the roles of both director and ambassador for the club after stepping aside from the managerial hotseat.
Avie Glazer said: "I am delighted to announce that Alex has agreed to stay with the club as a director.
"His contributions to Manchester United over the last 26 years have been extraordinary and, like all United fans, I want him to be a part of its future."
Former player Paul Ince described Ferguson as one of a kind and also admitted finding a replacement would not be easy.
Blackpool manager Ince told Sky Sports News: "He's done the lot, you will never see anyone of his kind again."
When Ince joined United from West Ham in 1989 Ferguson made sure his move was not ended because of a problem with his medical.
"I remember the first day that I joined Man Utd. I failed my medical and I thought my move to Man Utd was going to collapse. The way he treated me was like a son and I will never forget that moment.
"To play under that man was so demanding, his standards were so high. We had our ups and downs, a lot have ups and downs with him."
Ince said Ferguson's replacement would have a difficult act to follow.
"It's got to be someone with a massive character. It has got to be someone who can deal with what it takes to be a Manchester United manager.
"Whoever comes in to replace him is going to have to deal with the Man United legacy."
Ince believes Ferguson staying at the club as a director could be a double edged sword for his successor.
"It can have its advantages and disadvantages. Replacing Alex Ferguson is such a massive, massive job. Whoever goes in will need the help of Alex Ferguson," he said.
"Whoever comes in if it doesn't go well you've got Sir Alex Ferguson upstairs and it can put added pressure on you."
Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) chief executive Gordon Taylor said Ferguson would be "the toughest act to follow".
Taylor said: "The game of football will be a lot poorer place without him. He has been quite simply the best. He followed in Sir Matt Busby's footsteps and even surpassed him.
"He will be also be the toughest act to follow."
Taylor has been PFA chief throughout Ferguson's time at United and he admitted they had clashed on occasion - but that it was soon forgotten.
He added: "I will miss him - he has been a very good friend of the PFA throughout his career.
"Of course at times it has not always been smooth and we have had a difference of opinion but we always respected each other and we have had a lot more agreements than disagreements.
"He is a great football man, he has turned out team after team and in terms of youth development he has been one of the finest exponents of that. He has had a faith and a belief in his youngsters that is rare in today's football."
Former United striker Dwight Yorke, who played under Ferguson between 1998 and 2002 and was part of the 1999 treble-winning side, feels a combination of factors led the Scot to call it a day at the age of 71.
"I've seen Sir Alex Ferguson on Monday at a charity game," the former Trinidad and Tobago international told Sky Sports News.
"He was in good spirits but the rumours were really strong around the place that he was going to retire and there was a big announcement supposed to be happening tomorrow and not today.
"I think probably the fact of the club floating on the stock market meant this decision needed to come out very quickly. But the people within the football club knew this was likely to happen this season. And I think with his hip replacement (booked in for late July), with David Gill going as well, that sort of pushed him to say 'this might be the best time for me to retire'."
Yorke expects there to be a strange atmosphere in the immediate wake of Ferguson's departure from the helm.
"He's been such a focal point at the football club," he said. "He's taken Manchester United to the level they are at right now.
"It's a shock to the system because he's been there every day. He's the one person when you go into the football club he's always there. For him not to be there from the start of next season, it's not going to be right around the football club and it will take some getting used to."
Ferguson, of course, will be bowing out on a high having regained the Premier League title after being pipped to the crown by rivals Manchester City in dramatic circumstances on the final day of last term.
"He has very, very high standards and it's all about winning trophies and breaking records with Sir Alex Ferguson," Yorke continued.
"But there's more to the man. How they lost the Premier League last season - that would have hurt him immensely. Certainly losing it to Manchester City, that would have hurt worse than anything else.
"He wanted to regain it and he's managed to do that in a great way and with a great style of play."
FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who gave Ferguson with a lifetime achievement award last year, said on Twitter: "Just heard Sir Alex Ferguson is retiring at end of season. His achievements in the game place him without doubt as one of the 'greats'."
Sports minister Hugh Robertson also paid tribute, saying: "Sir Alex Ferguson is one of the greatest British managers of all time and has been an incredible servant to Manchester United, bringing the club unprecedented success domestically and in Europe.
"His enthusiasm for our national game is boundless and I congratulate him on a remarkable managerial career."
United confirmed the news on their website on Wednesday morning.
"The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly," said Ferguson.
"It is the right time."
Ferguson's last game in charge will be at West Brom on May 19 and he will join the club's football board.
"It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so," he said.
"The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one."
Ferguson has had a career the like of which will never be seen again. He won his 49th trophy in United's 20th league championship and seemed set to extend his career into next season, confirming as much in his programme notes ahead of Sunday's encounter with Chelsea.
Instead, with a hip operation booked in for August, this weekend's Old Trafford encounter with Swansea, that will be followed by a trophy presentation, will be his last home game in charge.
He leaves behind a club in good shape.
"Our training facilities are amongst the finest in global sport and our home Old Trafford is rightfully regarded as one of the leading venues in the world," said Ferguson.
"Going forward, I am delighted to take on the roles of both Director and Ambassador for the club. With these activities, along with my many other interests, I am looking forward to the future.
"I must pay tribute to my family, their love and support has been essential.
"My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement. Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.
"As for my players and staff, past and present, I would like to thank them all for a staggering level of professional conduct and dedication that has helped to deliver so many memorable triumphs. Without their contribution the history of this great club would not be as rich."
Although there have been times - in 1989 when it seemed he was going to be sacked, and 2002, when he was about to retire and instead performed a last-minute U-turn - when it was felt Ferguson was ready to leave, this time it is permanent.
The speculation intensified on Tuesday afternoon and United's failure to respond to questioning about the matter further fuelled the rumours overnight.
Now, Ferguson is left to look back on the power-shift in English football that he has instigated.
"In my early years, the backing of the board, and Sir Bobby Charlton in particular, gave me the confidence and time to build a football club, rather than just a football team," said Ferguson.
"Over the past decade, the Glazer family have provided me with the platform to manage Manchester United to the best of my ability and I have been extremely fortunate to have worked with a talented and trustworthy chief executive in David Gill.
"I am truly grateful to all of them.
"To the fans, thank you. The support you have provided over the years has been truly humbling.
"It has been an honour and an enormous privilege to have had the opportunity to lead your club and I have treasured my time as manager of Manchester United."
Now, for the first time in over a quarter of a century, United are on the hunt for a new manager.
David Moyes, out of contract at Everton, and Jose Mourinho, who is expected to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season, are the obvious favourites, although Borussia Dortmund's highly-regarded coach J?rgen Klopp and Bayern Munich's 67-year-old outgoing boss Jupp Heynckes will also come into contention.
It promises to be a major test of nerve for the Glazer family, plus Ed Woodward, who will replace David Gill as chief executive in the summer.
"Alex has proven time and time again what a fantastic manager he is but he's also a wonderful person," said co-chairman Joel Glazer.
"His determination to succeed and dedication to the club have been truly remarkable.
"I will always cherish the wonderful memories he has given us, like that magical night in Moscow."
Avi Glazer added: "I am delighted to announce that Alex has agreed to stay with the Club as a director.
"His contributions to Manchester United over the last 26 years have been extraordinary and, like all United fans, I want him to be a part of its future."
Ferguson's exit coincides with that of Gill, who hopes to be voted onto UEFA's executive committee in the summer.
"I've had the tremendous pleasure of working very closely with Alex for 16 unforgettable years - through the Treble, the double, countless trophy wins and numerous signings," said Gill.
"We knew that his retirement would come one day and we both have been planning for it by ensuring the quality of the squad and club structures are in first class condition.
"It has been the greatest experience of my working life being alongside Alex and a great honour to be able to call him a friend."

Emerging Dancehall star, DaNandi continues his ascendancy within the genres ranks as hes stepped up his game in 2012; showing his full potential as an artiste to the masses.
Born Andrique Wright, the Sherlock Crescent (Kingston) native continues to live out a dream which first came true after penning his first song at just 9 years old. Following his days at Jamaica College where he perfected several aspects of his repertoire including freestyling, DaNandi took his biggest step towards achieving his goal when he released the Weapon X International produced single, Tell Me When.
That single gave fans just a small sample of the lyrical ingenuity that DaNandi possessed as it soon garnered airplay locally and overseas while later copping a few stage show appearances as well as mixtape features.
From there, DaNandis star grew as he unleashed effort such as Party Vibez (S-Lock Records) and Mi Love It (Weapon X International) as well as appearing on an unofficial remix of Moment For Life by Trinidadian-American hip-hip diva, Nicki Minaj.
This year, DaNandi has stamped his authority as one of Dancehalls future superstars as hes unveiled well-received singles such as Real Badman in the Terrible Duppy Riddim (Gesta Music) and Mi Like You. His most recent collaboration with Weapon X International once again proved fruitful as DaNandis single, Up Inna Di Club offers a true party vibe as DaNandi continues to reach out to various demographics within Dancehall.
With his momentum continuously building, DaNandi will look to capitalize as he plans to take over the summer with upcoming projects such as Lyrical Ghandi on the Yardlink Riddim, Hunt Me a Hunt (Solid Empire) and Stop Chat (Zodiac Riddim) which his camp promises will put many artistes on notice. Additionally, future collaborations with Toronto based Dancehall star, Danger Matic and British rapper, Oranjee are also in the works.
DaNandis stock continues to grow within Dancehall circles as he continues to prove his worth as a legitimate contender for years to come.
The Government of Antigua is planning to launch a website selling movies, music and software, without paying U.S. copyright holders. The Caribbean island is taking the unprecedented step because the United States refuses to lift a trade blockade preventing the island from offering Internet gambling services, despite several WTO decisions in Antiguas favor. The country now hopes to recoup some of the lost income through a WTO approved warez site.
Antigua and Barbuda is a small country in the Caribbean that for years had a flourishing gambling industry.
A few years ago 5% of all Antiguans worked at gambling related companies. However, when the U.S. prevented the island from accessing their market the industry collapsed.
What was once a multi-billion dollar industry in our country, employing almost 5% of our population has now shrunk to virtually nothing, Antiguas High Commissioner to London, Carl Roberts, said previously.
Hoping to rebuild the gambling business Antigua filed a dispute at the World Trade Organization (WTO), which they won.
In 2005 the WTO ruled that the US refusal to let Antiguan gambling companies access their market violated free-trade, as domestic companies were allowed to operate freely. In 2007 the WTO went a step further and granted Antigua the right to suspend U.S. copyrights up to $21 million annually.
TorrentFreak is informed by a source close to Antiguas Government that the country now plans to capitalize on this option. The authorities want to launch a website selling U.S. media to customers worldwide, without compensating the makers.
The plan has been in the works for several months already and Antigua is ready to proceed once they have informed the WTO about their plan. Initially the island put the topic on the WTO meeting last month, but the U.S. blocked it from being discussed by arguing that the request was untimely.
This month Antigua will try again, and if they succeed their media hub is expected to launch soon after.
Antiguas attorney Mark Mendel told TorrentFreak that he cant reveal any details on the plans. However, he emphasized that the term piracy doesnt apply here as the WTO has granted Antigua the right to suspend U.S. copyrights.
There is no body in the world that can stop us from doing this, as we already have approval from the international governing body WTO, Mendel told us.
TorrentFreak is in the process of obtaining details of the content to be offered and the prices to be charged. One option would be to ask users for $5 a month in return for unlimited access to U.S. media.
As predicted, the suggestion to suspend U.S. copyrights is already meeting resistance from United States authorities.
If Antigua actually proceeds with a plan for its government to authorize the theft of intellectual property, it would only serve to hurt Antiguas own interests, the U.S warned in a letter to the WTO last month.
According to the letter Antigua will ruin their chances of getting a settlement should they approve a site that sels U.S. copyrighted goods without compensating the makers.
Government-authorized piracy would undermine chances for a settlement that would provide real benefits to Antigua. It also would serve as a major impediment to foreign investment in the Antiguan economy, particularly in high-tech industries, the U.S. added.
Antigua doesnt appear to be impressed much by these threats and is continuing with its plan.
If the Antiguan media portal indeed launches, it will make headlines all across the world, which may result in the site becoming one of the larger authorized suppliers of U.S. media on the Internet.
It was not so long ago that international recording artist Sizzla Kalonji released the track entitled learn to read. In the song he advised the youths to learn to read and write and elaborated on the importance of education so as to not be deceived. Fast forward a few months later and dancehall artist Karamanti is releasing the video for her single called read.
Much like Kalonji, Karamantis song addresses the matter of illiteracy but she goes a step further by encouraging persons who are able to read to do so more frequently. She equates the increase in negative images and messages in the music industry with the makers and promoters refusal to expand their minds via reading.
The video which was shot in the Cassia Park area in Kingston starts out with a dramatization of a man behaving infuriately because of his inability to read. He is then confronted by a young lady who explains that it is never too late to learn and that she would be willing to teach him. The video has several still images of messages supporting reading and its importance.
