With numerous rumours surrounding the possible cancellation of the summer beach party, organisers of the event, Solid Agency, is this week rolling out the promotional campaign with the announcement that plans for the 2010 staging of Fully Loaded are already underway, for the event slated to take place on Sunday August 1.

In a release sent to THE STAR, Solid Agency PR Manager Chris Campbell said, "Fully Loaded is back this year and the keyword for patrons to pay attention to is 'New'. We have a new venue, new sponsorship and new ideas we gonna be bringing to the event."

He continued, "For the first time ever, we will be staging the event on the first Sunday in the month, usually it's on the last Sunday. Outside of that we have a number of sponsors coming on board and by this weekend we will be putting out an official release confirming the venue among other things."

Last year the event was staged at the James Bond Beach in Oracabessa, St Mary, and featured performances from international award-winning rapper Fat Joe, the Alliance general Bounty Killer, Gully gad Mavado, J.O.P leader Aidonia, Demarco, Teflon and Iyara while reggae/pop sensation Sean Kingston made a surprise appearance.

The 'Shake it Up Tonight' edition of the highly anticipated and celebrated oldies party, Heineken Good Times, finally received the 'green light' and took place at the Mas Camp Village in New Kingston last Saturday after it was postponed from its initially scheduled May 29 date due to safety concerns as a state of emergency had been effected on the Corporate Area.

Nonetheless, the postponement and subsequent rescheduling of the date may have had an adverse effect on the expected turnout of patrons.

When THE STAR arrived at the venue at around 11:30 p.m., the usual long lines, characteristic of previous stagings, hence no delays in entering the venue.

Upon entering, however, patrons were confronted with an empty dance floor that defined the lacklustre turnout, and patrons seemed to prefer spending their time at the Heineken bars, purchasing buckets of Heinekens and 'holding a vibe' as the night was still young.

quality

Notably, though lacking in quantity, Heineken Good Times delivered in quality, as the song selections were well received by those in attendance.

The disc jockeys could do no wrong as patrons expressed their approvals aloud for their choice of songs in the 'early juggling' segment.

Song selections from the 1980's and early 1990s had patrons in a frenzy. Among them, Mr Lover Man by Shabba Ranks, Nuff Respect by Lady G, Roundtable Talk by Lady G and Papa San and Missing You Now by Sanchez.

By the time, Follow the Leader by the Soca Boys was played, almost everyone in the venue began following the instructions that were delivered throughout the song.

Perhaps the songs that best described the theme Shake it Up Tonight were those tracks which required the closer bonding of the male and female patrons, like Back Shot by Lady Saw and Spragga Benz.

Go Go Wine by Captain Barkey and Oh Carolina by Shaggy also had the females busy on the dance floor, and when the disc jocks teased patrons by playing a few seconds of Gyptian's current hit Hold Yuh, there was an almost deafening uproar.

It was clear that although the venue was not full to capacity or even close to equalling its normal turnout, those patrons who did attend, made the most of the night as they enjoyed some 'Good Times'.

After trying for years, Summerfest Productions can finally boast that R&B superstar Usher Raymond will be performing on the Reggae Sumfest stage.

"We have been trying to get him for about four years but this time we were lucky. It was very difficult 'cause normally these people have tours in the summer and it is not easy for them to break it to come to a one night in Jamaica, but we were able to get him to come for one night," Robert Russell, chairman of Summerfest Productions, told THE STAR.

He admitted that it was very expensive to get Usher on the show but it will not change the ticket prices.

Russell is also very confident that Usher will bring people to the show and give an exceptional performance when he performs on international night 2 on July 24 at Catherine Hall, St James.

"Usher is going to mash up the stage. Every girl that I have spoken to is telling me that they are coming to Sumfest. And, I am sure that when the girls come the boys will come with them too," he said.

"Usher is able to crossover from the young people to the older people 'cause everybody loves his music and he has a wonderful selection and he is such a good performer," he added.

With a state of emergency and curfews imposed on sections of the island and recent unrest in Kingston and St Andrew being top news around the world last month, Russell believes Usher will bring good attention to the island.

"I think he is really going to put Jamaica on the stage this summer for Sumfest. This is what we wanted to do. We wanted to showcase Jamaica 'cause you know we have been getting some bad publicity. But now that we have announced the line-up, we are getting all types of emails. People are booking their airline seats and hotels because they are coming to see a Jamaica that is open for business," Russell told THE STAR.

Hollywood film snubs JA?

June 26, 2010
Started By jubalson5 Comments

Jamaica was arguably snubbed in the Hollywood film Knight and Day as the delicate beach scene wasn't identified as belonging to the island despite explicitly identifying other locations as in USA, Spain, Austria and Chile, which would have aided Jamaica's tourism recovery following the recent social unrest.

Film stakeholders say it's unfortunate that tourism won't directly benefit but maintain that the film industry has benefited.

knight-and-day-2_w370.jpg

"The truth is if we want Jamaica's name blasted on screen we need to do it ourselves and have more local films," said Brian St Juste head of Apex Productions and the Jamaica Film and Video Producers' Association.

"The bigger thing that came out of this movie is the spend, the crew experience and the public relations."

Jampro's film commissioner Kim-Marie Spence added that Hollywood insiders will see the credits listing Jamaica even though most movie goers would not which will result in future business opportunities.

"It would have been great for them to call the name Jamaica, but we can't determine the script. If we want more name calls then we have to support the local film industry," she said following the movie's screening on Wednesday and subsequent conversations on Thursday.

Part of government's strategy is for Jamaica to be doubled as a film destination and also a site for generic filming. "The reality is that Lord of the Rings didn't say 'New Zealand' in the film but it was filmed there. Similar to Knight and Day. It is up to Jamaica to make use of that opportunity."

The country earned US$1.5 million in one week from the film's Jamaica leg which was shot in Portland. The scene in Jamaica lasted about 10 minutes of running time. During which US actors Tom Cruise and Carmen Diaz jumped into the sea to an avoid aerial attack which bombed an island the size of a golf course. The location was never identified in text or verbally as an island off the coast of Jamaica. Even though verbal and typographical indicators were used for the preceding scene in New York and subsequent scenes in Austria and Chile and Spain. At the showing on Wednesday screams arose during the first images of coconut trees and blue sea but quietened when no text or dialogue alluded to the island's location.

Knight and Day is an action comedy film directed by James Mangold. The plot surrounds Cruise who becomes a rogue CIA agent in an attempt to rid the agency of a corrupt agent and in the process clear his name. The corrupt agent, John Peter Sarsgaard plots to sell a classified self-perpetuating power cell to Spanish dealers but is intercepted by Cruise who steals the power cell and uses Diaz as a courier. Jamaicans who worked on the set present at the screening acknowledged that they benefited from the Hollywood exposure.

Production accountant, Steve Biko Armstrong stated that industry would benefit going forward: "Fox films informed other filmmakers of the shoot in Jamaica and it is just the layman who wouldn't know. That is the only disadvantage."

Set grip Cleveland McKenzie added: "It was a wonderful scene with a nice beach in the background. The country overall will benefit from the technical experience."

"The Jamaica scenes looked nice and it is action packed and high paced," said Simon Packer production assistant and former Wolmerian. "The movie will do well. It will be a blockbuster."

Last month, tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett estimated that the loss incurred by the tourism sector, resulting from the civil unrest in which the security forces and gunmen from Western Kingston, loyal to Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, were locked in firefights for two days, to be up to US$350 million. As a result the ministry this month launched a massive "promotional and advertising campaign" estimated to cost Government an additional US$10 million, to counter the negative image portrayed globally and woo visitors to the destination once again. The film could have filliped government's efforts to counter the negative images if explicitly linked to Jamaica.

POPULAR dancehall DJ Vybz Kartel is expected to hand himself over to the St Catherine South police today, a day after being named as a major person of interest.

Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adijah Palmer, is one of six persons who police in that division said they had an interest in interviewing.

Vybz-KARTEL-2_w370.jpg

The other men are:

* Omar Lawrence, also called 'Hommie', of Anglin Lane, Newlands, Portmore;

* Seymour Johnson, otherwise called 'Bulb Eye', of Braeton Phase One;

* Paul Smith, alias called 'Kerone' and 'Biggs', of Big Lane, Central Village;

* Oneil Myurrie, also called 'Neily', of Little Lane, Central Village; and

* Damion Perry, alias 'Tillyman', of Old Harbour Bay.

The police have named more than 100 major persons of interest, since Prime Minister Bruce Golding announced a limited state of emergency last month in Kingston and St Andrew, and which was last week extended to St Catherine.

Vybz Kartel and the other five men are the latest addition to the growing list.

The state of emergency gives the police the power to detain persons indefinitely.

Despite rising popularity among dancehall fans, Vybz Kartel has had a troubled year. He has been banned from performing in Barbados and St Lucia after authorities in those countries branded his music as undesirable and a wrong influence on young people.

His studio at Kirk Avenue in Havendale, St Andrew was locked down by the St Andrew North police after residents of the community complained that the recording studio was attracting undesirables who were making their lives hell.

BODO, Nigeria Big oil spills are no longer news in this vast, tropical land. The Niger Delta, where the wealth underground is out of all proportion with the poverty on the surface, has endured the equivalent of the Exxon Valdez spill every year for 50 years by some estimates. The oil pours out nearly every week, and some swamps are long since lifeless.

Perhaps no place on earth has been as battered by oil, experts say, leaving residents here astonished at the nonstop attention paid to the gusher half a world away in the Gulf of Mexico. It was only a few weeks ago, they say, that a burst pipe belonging to Royal Dutch Shell in the mangroves was finally shut after flowing for two months: now nothing living moves in a black-and-brown world once teeming with shrimp and crab.

Not far away, there is still black crude on Gio Creek from an April spill, and just across the state line in Akwa Ibom the fishermen curse their oil-blackened nets, doubly useless in a barren sea buffeted by a spill from an offshore Exxon Mobil pipe in May that lasted for weeks.

The oil spews from rusted and aging pipes, unchecked by what analysts say is ineffectual or collusive regulation, and abetted by deficient maintenance and sabotage. In the face of this black tide is an infrequent protest soldiers guarding an Exxon Mobil site beat women who were demonstrating last month, according to witnesses but mostly resentful resignation.

Small children swim in the polluted estuary here, fishermen take their skiffs out ever farther Theres nothing we can catch here, said Pius Doron, perched anxiously over his boat and market women trudge through oily streams. There is Shell oil on my body, said Hannah Baage, emerging from Gio Creek with a machete to cut the cassava stalks balanced on her head.

That the Gulf of Mexico disaster has transfixed a country and president they so admire is a matter of wonder for people here, living among the palm-fringed estuaries in conditions as abject as any in Nigeria, according to the United Nations. Though their region contributes nearly 80 percent of the governments revenue, they have hardly benefited from it; life expectancy is the lowest in Nigeria.

President Obama is worried about that one, Claytus Kanyie, a local official, said of the gulf spill, standing among dead mangroves in the soft oily muck outside Bodo. Nobody is worried about this one. The aquatic life of our people is dying off. There used be shrimp. There are no longer any shrimp.

In the distance, smoke rose from what Mr. Kanyie and environmental activists said was an illegal refining business run by local oil thieves and protected, they said, by Nigerian security forces. The swamp was deserted and quiet, without even bird song; before the spills, Mr. Kanyie said, women from Bodo earned a living gathering mollusks and shellfish among the mangroves.

With new estimates that as many as 2.5 million gallons of oil could be spilling into the Gulf of Mexico each day, the Niger Delta has suddenly become a cautionary tale for the United States.

As many as 546 million gallons of oil spilled into the Niger Delta over the last five decades, or nearly 11 million gallons a year, a team of experts for the Nigerian government and international and local environmental groups concluded in a 2006 report. By comparison, the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989 dumped an estimated 10.8 million gallons of oil into the waters off Alaska.

So the people here cast a jaundiced, if sympathetic, eye at the spill in the gulf. Were sorry for them, but its whats been happening to us for 50 years, said Emman Mbong, an official in Eket.

The spills here are all the more devastating because this ecologically sensitive wetlands region, the source of 10 percent of American oil imports, has most of Africas mangroves and, like the Louisiana coast, has fed the interior for generations with its abundance of fish, shellfish, wildlife and crops.

Local environmentalists have been denouncing the spoliation for years, with little effect. Its a dead environment, said Patrick Naagbanton of the Center for Environment, Human Rights and Development in Port Harcourt, the leading city of the oil region.

Though much here has been destroyed, much remains, with large expanses of vibrant green. Environmentalists say that with intensive restoration, the Niger Delta could again be what it once was.

Nigeria produced more than two million barrels of oil a day last year, and in over 50 years thousands of miles of pipes have been laid through the swamps. Shell, the major player, has operations on thousands of square miles of territory, according to Amnesty International. Aging columns of oil-well valves, known as Christmas trees, pop up improbably in clearings among the palm trees. Oil sometimes shoots out of them, even if the wells are defunct.

The oil was just shooting up in the air, and it goes up in the sky, said Amstel M. Gbarakpor, youth president in Kegbara Dere, recalling the spill in April at Gio Creek. It took them three weeks to secure this well.

How much of the spillage is due to oil thieves or to sabotage linked to the militant movement active in the Niger Delta, and how much stems from poorly maintained and aging pipes, is a matter of fierce dispute among communities, environmentalists and the oil companies.

Caroline Wittgen, a spokeswoman for Shell in Lagos, said, We dont discuss individual spills, but argued that the vast majority were caused by sabotage or theft, with only 2 percent due to equipment failure or human error.

We do not believe that we behave irresponsibly, but we do operate in a unique environment where security and lawlessness are major problems, Ms. Wittgen said.

Oil companies also contend that they clean up much of what is lost. A spokesman for Exxon Mobil in Lagos, Nigel A. Cookey-Gam, said that the companys recent offshore spill leaked only about 8,400 gallons and that this was effectively cleaned up.

But many experts and local officials say the companies attribute too much to sabotage, to lessen their culpability. Richard Steiner, a consultant on oil spills, concluded in a 2008 report that historically the pipeline failure rate in Nigeria is many times that found elsewhere in the world, and he noted that even Shell acknowledged almost every year a spill due to a corroded pipeline.

On the beach at Ibeno, the few fishermen were glum. Far out to sea oil had spilled for weeks from the Exxon Mobil pipe. We cant see where to fish; oil is in the sea, Patrick Okoni said.

We dont have an international media to cover us, so nobody cares about it, said Mr. Mbong, in nearby Eket. Whatever cry we cry is not heard outside of here.

MANCHESTER CITY have completed a Ł27million swoop for Spanish star David Silva.

The Valencia forward, 24, will join Roberto Mancini's side after this summer's World Cup.

Silva said: "The time is right for me to seek a new challenge, and I am thrilled about playing in England with Manchester City.

"I believe the Premier League is one of the best competitions in the world and I want to bring success to City and win trophies for them.

"I want to say that I always hoped to come to Manchester City and I am excited about my future there.

"They are a club with a great future with fantastic players. I want to be an important player in Manchester City's history.

"Now I need to fully concentrate on playing for Spain in the World Cup."

Silva formed a formidable partnership with fellow Spain international David Villa in La Liga in recent seasons.

But with Valencia struggling for cash and Villa signing for Barcelona, Silva has decided to move on.

He added: "I would like to thank Valencia as a club and all of their loyal fans, and my team mates there and staff.

"I have enjoyed six years at Valencia, they discovered me as a footballer and they will always be a special club for me."

Ambitious City have won the race to capture Silva ahead of Chelsea and Real Madrid.

Jose Mourinho had been keen to take him to the Bernabeu but cooled his interest after sealing a Ł20m move for Argentina ace Angel Di Maria earlier this week.

City boss Mancini said: "I think that David Silva is one of the best midfielders in Europe, and I hope he will be a very important player for Manchester City.

"I am so pleased he is coming to us, I think he can make a big, big impact for Manchester City.

"In signing David, we are showing the World that we are bringing the best players here and that we hope to compete to win the Premier League.

"When players see what is happening at Manchester City and the ambition they are attracted to what we are building and want to be a part of it.

"I hope he does very well for Spain in the World Cup and then joins us for our pre-season, ready to compete in the Premier League.

"I am very excited about seeing him playing for Manchester City."

City will also announce the signing for Barca midfielder Yaya Toure later this week.

$300 SEX FOR SALE

June 30, 2010
Started By HABLA RUPTION7 Comments

Residents of Old Harbour, St Catherine, are concerned about an increase in prostitution in the town, with women selling their services for as low as $300.

What has made the development even more serious, the residents claim, is that some of the women are of unsound mind.

THE STAR has learnt that several areas in the community are being used by the women for their trade.

The availability of the women is said to have also caused an influx of men, travelling to the community to get their 'freak on'.

One man said: "I went to the station to buy gas, the girl came up, 'yu doing business, not gas business a talking sar. A flesh mi a sell, yu can get $300 wut'."

A female resident said with the increase in hookers, it was difficult for ordinary women to go about their business in the community at nights without being approached by sex-hunting men.

"Yeah man, dem want to beat out the town man. Dem mek woman look cheap. If you walk on the road with a bag, people tink you a di same thing," a woman said.

Some persons, however, told THE STAR they understood that economic difficulties and unemployment had forced these women to be involved in prostitution.

"One woman tell mi say she sell all $35,000 fi di night...," a resident said. "If dem get work then you would not have to come out."

When THE STAR visited the area a number of scantily clad women of all shapes and ages were seen soliciting customers.

When contacted, the police said that they were aware of the situation and were putting plans in place to deal with it.

This has been a difficult list to write because the prices of these items vary from season to season. However, despite that, these 10 foods are generally the most expensive things you can eat. The ordering is based partly on price and partly on how luxurious they are considered to be.

1. Beluga Caviar [Wikipedia]

Picture 1-6

Beluga Caviar is the most expensive food item in the world, costing up to $5,000 per kilogram. Caviar is fish roe (eggs) and this particular brand comes from the Beluga Sturgeon, found mostly in the Caspian sea. It can take up to 20 years for a Beluga Sturgeon to reach its maximum size and they can weigh up to 2 tonnes. The eggs are the largest of the fish eggs used for caviar. Beluga usually ranges from purple to black, the palest being the most expensive. Beluga caviar is generally served on its own on small pieces of toast as it needs no additions of flavour to improve it. If you have not experienced eating caviar, when you bite down each egg pops and releases a slightly salty-fishy flavour.

2. Saffron [Wikipedia]

Picture 2-3

Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world, reaching prices beyond $2,000 per pound (depending on season). Saffron is the three stigmas and style of the crocus flower. Each stigma and style must be picked by hand and it takes thousands to make a single ounce of the spice. Brightly yellow in colour, the spice is used for colouring and subtle flavouring of food. It has a bitter taste and a hay-like fragrance.

3. White Truffles [Wikipedia]

Tartufobianco

Truffles are from the underground ascomycetes family (tubers) and are reputed for their high prices. It has an odour similar to deep fried walnuts which is extremely pungent to some people, causing a reeling effect. Interestingly, some people are unable to detect the odour of truffles (which is possibly to their advantage!) The white truffle is the most expensive of the family. They are generally served sliced into extremely thin slivers on top of other food and are frequently suffused in oil for sale as truffle-oil.

4. Kobe Beef [Wikipedia]

Kobe Beef Sub Big

True Kobe Beef () raised from the black Tajima-ushi breed of Wagyu cattle is produced only in Hygo Prefecture in Japan. It is bred according to secret, and strict traditions. It is fed on beer and grain and produces meat so tender and fatty that it rivals foie gras in texture. The beef can cost up to $300 per pound. This breed of cow is genetically predisposed to intense marbling, and produces a higher percentage of oleaginous, unsaturated fat than any other breed of cattle known in the world. Another special trick in the production of this meat is daily massages by the human owners. I must confess to being a little envious!

5. Birds Nest [Wikipedia]

377425314 4C77E97565 O

The nests in question here are produced by a variety of Swifts, specifically Cave Swifts who produce the nest by spitting a chemical compound that hardens in the air. The nests are considered a delicacy in China and are one of the most expensive animal products consumed by humans. It is generally served as a soup but can also be used as a sweet. When combined with water, the hard nests take on a gelatinous texture. My own experience of Birds nest was in a pudding called Birds Nest and Almond soup the nest was dissolved in almond milk which was served as a sweet soup. The nest tasted musty and had the texture of snot.

6. Fugu [Wikipedia]

Fugu.Tsukiji.Cr

Fugu () is the Japanese word for pufferfish and is also a Japanese dish prepared from the meat of pufferfish. Pufferfish are deadly and if the fish is prepared incorrectly it can lead to death (in fact there are numerous deaths reported in Japan each year from the consumption of this delicacy). One pinhead of the pufferfish poison is sufficient to kill a full grown adult male human. It has become one of the most celebrated Japanese dishes. In order to prepare the fish for human consumption, a Japanese chef must undergo rigourous training and certification. It is normally prepared in such a way that a tiny amount of poison is left in the fish as the poison gives it a slightly numbing and tingling effect.

7. Foie Gras [Wikipedia]

Foiegrascalamansimustardseed

Second to caviar, foie gras is one of the finest western foods available. It is the liver of ducks (foie gras de canard) or geese (fois gras dOie). It is produced by a method called gravage, which is force-feeding of the animal of grain via a tube down the throat. Ducks and Geese have an anatomy that makes this painless. The liver expands to many times the normal size and contains a great deal of fat. The texture of foie gras is very similar to that of butter with a very earthy flavour. Foie gras is generally eaten as a raw pate, but is can be lightly cooked to give it a greater depth of flavour. Unfortunately this delicacy is surrounded by controversy and the sale and consumption is banned in some American cities (such as Chicago). It is freely available in all parts of Europe and the rest of the world.

8. Lobster [Wikipedia]

Product-92-Standard-640X480

Lobsters form a large family of marine crustaceans that nets a $1.8 billion for the seafood industry every year. They have a close family relationship with fresh water crayfish. Lobsters live on rocky, sandy, or muddy bottoms from the shorelin

30 June 2010 Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will travel to Jamaica this weekend to attend a Caribbean summit and discuss regional efforts to try to achieve the social and economic targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the United Nations announced today.

The Thirty-First Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community, which is also known as CARICOM, is slated to begin in Montego Bay on Sunday.

Mr. Ban is expected to tell participants that the international community must act in concert in dealing with the impact of the global economic crisis, particularly its effects on the worlds most vulnerable.

He will also discuss the MDGs, which have a target date of 2015, and the need for Caribbean countries to accelerate progress towards the goals, which include slashing poverty, improving maternal health, fighting environmental degradation and boosting school attendance rates.

In September the UN chief is hosting a high-level event at UN Headquarters in New York that is aimed at charting the progress so far towards the MDGs and determining where attention and resources should be devoted between now and 2015.

In his address to the CARICOM gathering, Mr. Ban is also set to discuss UN efforts to support Haiti in the aftermath of Januarys catastrophic earthquake, which killed more than 200,000 people and left at least one million others homeless.

While visiting Jamaica Mr. Ban will also have bilateral meetings with various heads of Government from the Caribbean as well as representatives of regional organizations.

Surprise filled Vegas tour

Mr Vegas - File

Mr Vegas' hectic tour schedule has been filled with a number of surprises, to say the least.

A few days ago, during one of his performances in Orlando, the women simply couldn't get enough of Mr Vegas, or their own partners, in the case of one woman.

During the night's action-packed and energetic performance, a couple was caught having sex in a restroom at the venue. The security personnel were made aware of the situation and they were removed without incident.

Mr Vegas, whose correct name is Clifford Smith, said, "When I heard about it, I was a little surprised but I guess the lady had to find a way to release some tension during the Hot Wuk segment," he laughed.

"But overall, it was a great night. The club was packed to capacity and it was the same with the LA performance. It's always such a great experience performing for fans."

Mr Vegas heads to Europe in a few days. "I have some great things in mind for Europe. There are a lot of stops on the tour, but fans can expect great shows."

Fighters don't have a clue

Two women who were involved in a fight with each other, which resulted in both being stabbed and one bitten, were unable to explain what caused the fight when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The accused, Shareita Cargill and Michelle Gaynor, were both charged with unlawful wounding.

The women were involved in a cross case and labelled each other as the aggressor.

When Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey asked them why were they fighting, both responded that they were unsure, responses which seemed to annoy RM Pusey.

Subsequently, RM Pusey responded: "She don't know what happen, seems like two mad people in the place."

Gaynor told the court that Cargill had approached her on the day in question in a rage and directed expletives at her loudly.

However, Cargill told the court that two weeks before the fight, Gaynor had approached her at her home gate, drew down her shorts and exposed her bottom to her.

Cargill and Gaynor will return to court on August 12 for a preliminary enquiry when the medical certificates will be made available. They also had to submit their fingerprints to the police.

The investigation officer in the matter was also bound over.

The St Catherine South police have arrested a man in connection with a triple murder that occurred on the Hellshire Beach, St Catherine, on June 22.

THE STAR understands that the man who is from the De la Vega City in Spanish Town, St Catherine, was picked up on Friday on the beach.

Clive Blair, deputy superintendent of police in charge of operations for St Catherine South, said the man is believed to be part of a Spanish Town gang and investigations are ongoing.

''We are pleased to say there is a breakthrough. However, the police are continuing their investigations into the matter,'' DSP Blair said.

beach killing

The police investigations into the triple murder arose out of an incident last Tuesday when Christopher Thomas, 40, Melonie McGowan, 38, and 16-year-old Lisa Whyte, all of Hellshire Park, St Catherine, were gunned down on Hellshire Beach.

Reports are that on the day in question two men went to the beach in search of Thomas. He was seen by his attackers, who chased and shot him.

McGowan and Whyte reportedly ran to Thomas' assistance but they were also shot repeatedly. McGowan and Thomas died on the spot.

Whyte was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital in St Catherine where she was admitted and died the following day.

DANCEHALL artist Bounty Killer walked away from the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court a free man today after an assault case against him was dropped.

Bounty Killer, whose real name is Rodney Pryce, was arrested and charged for beating up his girlfriend, Kadeem Baker, who had indicated to the court that she was no longer interested in pursuing the case.

Police then charged Baker for creating public mischief and informed the court that she was being pressured by associates of Pryce to drop the case.

On the morning of his arrest in April Pryce reportedly called Baker and threatened her in full hearing of the police. He spent two weeks behind bars.

EXTORTION STILL ON(STAR NEWS)

Thugs target Coronation Market despite police presence

Criminals operating in and around the Coronation Market in downtown Kingston are still running extortion rackets, investigations by THE STAR have revealed.

This week, THE STAR made a number of trips through the busy commercial district and witnessed persons being extorted of money in and around the market despite the presence of the security forces who are posted in the nearby Tivoli Gardens.

Those seen falling victims to the extortionists include vendors and motorists who use parking spaces on the outskirts of the market.

Though not as bold as they once were, the extortionists have devised covert means of carrying out the criminal activity which according to one such individualDog Face, is the only way he can survive.

"Police seh a crime and mi know but right yah now mi cyaa get a job nowhere ... Mi naw go a road go kill nobody so a di only way mi can juggle and survive fi help feed my daughter," he told THE STAR.

Tivoli invasion

Dog Face was just one of five men who were seen going through a section of the market and taking food from vendors without consent. Dog Face explained that he makes money by either taking money from people in his community and selling them the food he collects or he collects the money from these persons and simply keeps it for himself since he can take the items from the vendors.

According to the vendors, before the Tivoli invasion, the men would have simply picked up whatever they wanted but now in a bid to remain below the radar they send their bags and request that it is filled. They collect the bags later.

In the case of the men who were seen soliciting money from motorists who use parking spaces attached to the market, they were less bold with their illegal activities.

Normally they would have demanded that persons pay upon returning to their vehicles, standing close by to ensure this.

Now they sit or stand some distance away and make sure the coast is clear before approaching the motorists and asking for the fee.

One motorist who was seen giving a man $100, said he did so only to avoid confrontation. "From eva since mi a come a market mi always a pay fi park eno plus mi cyaa badda wid no argument so mi jus give dem," the motorist simply said.

When approached a group of men seen collecting money refused to speak to THE STAR.

When contacted, the western Kingston police said it was expected that criminals would find ways of continuing extortion rackets, however, they said they were continuing their efforts to stop the process.

"This is something that has been happening for years so we know it wouldn't stop at the snap of our fingers. We will nonetheless remain vigilant in our efforts against extortion in the area," an officer said.

In a recent interview with THE STAR Head of the Criminal Investigation Branch, Assistant Commissioner Les Green urged persons who continue to fall victims of extortionists to make formal reports to the police, citing it the first step to fighting the act.

Elonia and David Reynolds fled crack-flooded Miami Gardens soon after the murder of their daughter. They were afraid-- but not of the drug dealers perched on every corner. It was their own rage that scared them, explains Elonia now: "I felt that I would see young boys on the street and run my car over them. My feeling was, Why are you able to be alive and not my child?"

As Riptide previously reported, the *lo**y standoff that has paralyzed Jamaica, as reputed drug lord Christopher "Dudus" Coke resists extradition to the United States, has local roots. In the 80s and 90s, Coke's ultraviolent Shower Posse, then helmed by his father Lester Lloyd Coke, terrified cocaine hub South Florida with the gang's trademark mass shootings.
Hilda LaToy Reynolds, killed by stray gunfire eighteen years ago as she celebrated her seventeenth birthday on a Miami-Dade dance floor, was one of an estimated 1400 people killed by the Shower Posse in the United States during that era.
"I think about LaToy every day," Elonia-- a gravely soft-spoken, strong-boned professional nurse-- tells Riptide in her comfortable Pembroke Pines living room as her husband, also a nurse, sleeps off a night shift in the bedroom. "People say you get over it as time passes. How could I ever get over it?"
Near 4 a.m. on August 15, 1992, aspiring teacher LaToy was at Taste of the Islands, a Caribbean restaurant/nightclub at 20316 NW Second Ave, when gunmen opened fire on the crowded dance floor. They were apparently gunning for a single target, a rival gangbanger, but the shooting left five dead, including LaToy, and seventeen wounded.
One of shooter's guns clicked empty as he pointed it at LaToy's sister Natalie, says Elonia, which is "the only reason we didn't have two caskets."
The slaughter was the deadliest in state history and pure Shower Posse-- the crew that was also implicated in similar mass shootings in crackhouses, in a packed Fireman's Benevolent Hall, in a warehouse in a shootout with cops, and on a soccer pitch where a professional player was left dead.
LaToy's murder tore apart her close-knit, conservative family, immigrants from South Jamaica. Her sister Natalie blamed herself since she had convinced honor student Hilda to go to the club for one dance: "She just couldn't even spell her name right for about a year afterwards," says Elonia.
The streets solved the murder, she says. While nobody was tried for the Taste of the Islands shootings, all of the players suspected by detectives were eventually either locked up for other crimes or murdered.
The Shower Posse was finally crippled by a RICO prosecution, and Elonia is no longer tempted to use her coupe as a revenge-seeking tank. But she's watched with disgust as "Dudus" Coke has made himself a folk hero in her native country, just as his father Lester Lloyd did-- by plying impoverished Jamaicans with cheap hand-outs of food and cash.
When a photo of 'Dudus' flashes on CNN, Elonia, a firm believer in the death penalty, sees the gangster who stole her daughter's life. "Anybody who has anything to do with the drug trade has *lo** on their hands," she says. "This boy ["Dudus"] needs to be put on the next boat over here, to face all of the horrors that he wrought."

Flying Car a Step Closer to Reality

Weird-looking cars are a dime a dozen. Far less common are weird-looking cars that can also fly AND have approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. Indeed, as far as we know, there's only one of those babies: The Terrafugia Transition.

The private aircraft/funky-looking car has been in the news before. But the recent announcement that it's going into production sparked mega-searches on the Web. Almost immediately, online lookups for "terrafugia transition" and "terrafugia transition pictures" both, well, took off.

A popular article from the UK's Daily Telegraph explains that the FAA's special exemption allows the vehicle to function as both a "light aircraft" and a car. Normally, for a plane to meet the "light aircraft" designation, it can weigh no more than 1,200 pounds. The Terrafugia Transition weighs 1,320, due primarily to the number of car-related safety features, like airbags and crumple zones. The "light aircraft" designation is key, because licenses for planes with that label require only 20 hours of flying time. Fewer hoops to jump through means more potential sales.

So, how does the plane/car work? Check out the flying car's official video below. So far, 70 people have placed a deposit. The total retail cost: $194,000. Expensive, but really, can you put a price on skipping commercial flights?

Dancehall artiste Cobra has finally spoken out about being shot in Portmore last month in a song called 'Draw Me Out'.

The deejay, whose real name is Ewart Everton Brown, was shot twice when he was in a car in a section of Braeton Phase One. He was later admitted to the Spanish Town hospital.

When contacted by THE STAR, Cobra said that he was in a taxi and just as he was about to tell the driver to dim his car light, the incident occurred. He said the incident was followed by many different stories. Hence, he decided to put his experience in a song.

"Mi hear people a seh a woman argument and mi nuh know bout nutten like that. So mi nuh get inna no details, mi just seh mi nah mek dem draw mi out," he said, noting that the song was recorded six days after the incident.

"Mi do the song fi mek people know seh mi nah push no violence towards no so-called gunman. Mi a mek di law tek its course. Di world nah go change if everytime a man resort to violence. Look pon a simple car light, a dat a man did ago kill mi fa?"

a big lesson

In the song, which is on Romeich Records', Stage Mix rhythm, Cobra spoke about how the shooting occurred and also about the shooting of Voicemail's Oneil Edwards, who died in May.

The songs says: "No fool caan draw me out/ If mi neva smart and have sense dead house woulda thaw mi out/A true badmind yuh nuh see seh dutty nigga a try tek mine/A nuh like mi caan defend it but a music mi seh over TEC-9/ Mi fans and well wishers mi all right/ But mi sorry seh Oneil lose a hard fight."

Cobra said he has learnt a big lesson from the incident.

"We are not bigger than attacks. Is not only musicians, but all public figures out there," he said. "Mi coulda dead and mi grateful. A just God mek mi deh ya."

With the country's renewed fight against crime, "wi just hope dem (criminals) tek wah gwaan and just change up dem life," he said.

In the meantime, Cobra, who is still recovering, said he recently did songs like Judas and collaboration with Busy Signal called Cry Out.

In addition to Cobra's song on the Stage Mix rhythm that was released on Wednesday, there are songs by artistes like Mavado, Versatile, Flexxx, TOK, Beenie Man, Einstein, Liquid, Tiana and Wayne Marshall.

Romeich said Beenie Man's song Pree Wi Fa, which is on the rhythm, is coincidentally about the shootings involving Cobra and Edwards.

Pusha T from the United States rap group Clipse has recorded a song paying tribute to extradited Tivoli Gardens strongman Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.

The rapper is from the group which has done popular songs like Grindin, When Was The Last Time and Hot Damn.

Yesterday, the song, Dearly Beloved, that was done about Coke surfaced on the Internet.

In the song, Pusha T said: "Dearly beloved hail Dudus/ Machine gun chain smothered/ A mere child rebel soldier that's what became of us/ Immortalised kingpins is what remains of us/ Money comes too fast for him to give it up/ And because of a war, he has to give it up/ First God then Dudus/ Rest in peace Vivian Blake. Shout out to Shower Posse."

This is not the first time that a song has been done about Coke. Last year, Twin of Twins recorded Which Dudus that was very popular.

extradition

Coke was extradited to the United States last week after being caught by the police on Mandela Highway. In a search for him, more than 73 people were killed in Tivoli Gardens. The manhunt also took the security forces into inner cities, rural communities and upscale neighbourhoods where Coke and his associates were suspected to be hiding.

Dudus was indicted in the US on a range of drug and guntrafficking offences.

HIGHGATE, St Mary Opposition spokesman on national security Peter Bunting wants alleged drug kingpin Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, who is now in a federal prison in the United States, to spill the beans on all his cronies in the criminal underworld.

Bunting said Coke's extradition is not the end of the story for criminals and their illegal activities and that if Coke decides to come clean and tell all about his affiliation with the criminal network, it could be the beginning of something new.

"Many persons think that this will be the beginning of another episode if he decides to come clean, and we hope that is what he will do so we can have not just one individual apprehended, but we can have a general housing," Bunting said.

"All those who were his co-conspirators, all those who were his collaborators, they should be hopefully feeling very insecure now and that the due process of law will eventually catch up with them as well."

Bunting said now that Coke has been extradited, the country can begin to move forward. He is, however, maintaining that the entire issue surrounding Coke's extradition was handled shabbily and that Prime Minister Bruce Golding and Justice Minister Dorothy Lightbourne should be held fully responsible.

Bunting made the comment while speaking to reporters at a National Executive Council (NEC) post-press conference at St Mary High school yesterday, where reporters were barred from recording the party leader Portia Simpson Miller's address.

Reporters were told that Simpson Miller took a last-minute decision not to allow the recording of her presentation as she wanted to speak directly to members of the NEC with whom she has not had an opportunity to speak directly since April.

In the meantime, Bunting said the party has made it clear that its decision to support the continuation and extension of the State of Emergency was only for 30 days and that it should not be considered automatic when the renewal comes up.

He said this was done to allow the security forces to complete the operation which they had started in West Kingston.

Mavado: from gangster to peace advocate

Mavado-14.jpg

From a gangster to a social commentator, singjay Mavado has been on a peaceful streak in recent months with a slew of conscious songs.

Hitting the public in 2006 as the self-proclaimed 'gangsta for life' with lyrics that involved 'marrow flying' and other tales of death, Mavado has slowly changed from a warrior to a proponent of peace. This week Mavado released Can't Believe from Romeich Records, which throws harsh words at politicians as he sings, "unnu think ghetto people nuh have no brains? dem sey change/tings remain di same/now mi see sey sum a cheat to lead di game/mi beg yuh nuh kill di yutes."

Prior to Can't Believe, was the Stephen McGregor produced Change Right Now in which he sings, "to see a yute die and mi know him for years/When mi look round nobody care and di people dem a live inna fear/ Di system need to change right now/too much yute a go down inna grave right now." In 9 Life and Starlight Mavado also pushes positivity, something he told THE WEEKEND STAR he believes is needed in Jamaica at this time.

di country a mash up

He said, "well yuh done know wha really inspire da songs are di whole ting wha gwaan right now inna di country and in di people. And yuh done know more time is like di goverment dem just a do some ting, and dem more haffi a tink bout di people dem, yuh undastand ... a just di cry of di people dem and we a hear it, we deh out deh wid di people dem, so we just put it inna di music and put it out dere fa da people dem caw we haffi talk to di people dem."

He added, "di country a mash up and at di end of di day we as the citizen and as even di star dem fi di country, we cyaan really depend pon only di government to save di country, we haffi try see waan we can do to, which is music. Yuh know how it go when dem ready dem bun Mavado and sey boy we sing bout di most gun and di most dis and dat. So we a show dem sey bwoy we can tek it pon a different course to fi a time and gwaan uplift di yute and gwaan try uplift di country, sing some nice song and try set back music."

According to Mavado there is a time "fi di good and di bad", so fans can still expect his gangsta persona to show up in his music, but it is not his intention to incite violence. Speaking on the government in Can't Believe, Mavado is hopeful that politicians will help the music to give the stars from the ghetto a time to shine. He says thus far that fans are loving his new attitude.

The artiste has done his part in recent times to assist his Cassava Piece community. Since year he spoke to Rev Al Miller to bring peace between the warring 'Big Yard' community off Mannings Hill Road and Cassava Piece. Since then he says things have been going good with plans in the making to do more for Cassava Piece.

In the meantime, he has a number of songs including girls songs such as the upcoming I Was Meant For You from Stephen McGregor, When You Feel Lonely for DASECA which will be out on iTunes on June 29, Hold Me and Messiah for Chimney Records.

Poet Mutabaruka is making his presence felt in some important quarters, but especially in Africa. For some time now, he has been working with the largest African recording/distribution company Gallo, for which he has completed two projects. Muta's Life and Lessons is the second set by him that is released on the Continent exclusively. The first one is called Mutabaruka in Combination.

"Gallo, the largest distribution company in Africa, will be featuring one of the poems on their World Cup compilation," Muta told the Sunday Observer.

Mutabaruka_w370.jpg

The poem is titled A Girl Called Johannesburg and this compilation should not be confused with Sony's Music of the Cup.

"This is the second album (Life and Lessons) to be released in Africa without coming to the west. The first was a compilation, Mutabaruka in Combination about four years ago. But it never reached the west. Wi nuh really feel shame that it never come to di west," asserted the unapologetic host of the radio programme, Cutting Edge.

"A Africa wi a work wid yah now," he insisted, "this why mi a tell you sey wi start from Africa and come out rather then start from Europe and go in. Wi a kinda do a reversal of the ting now. Wi also did a collaboration with Youssou N' Dour when him was out here and it is released now."

It would appear that Muta's focus on Africa has began to bear fruit. Carl Hunter, founder/director of Duppy Soursop Media House working in conjunction with the Ambassador of Senegal, is doing a documentary on Mutabaruka, who is to be given special recognition in Senegal, during their 50th independence celebrations later this month.

"Senegal is celebrating 50 years of independence and what we have been trying to do over the last three months is to get together and make a connection with west Africa and Jamaica... and Muta was chosen by the organisation to be heralded as one of the champions of Pan-Africanism," Hunter told the Observer.

The organisation in Senegal is Information Objects which contracted by the Senegalese Tourist Board. The recognition of Muta will be the creation of an African Hut built in his honour. This is an African folk tradition and it will either be a Bantu or a Wallof Hut. Various persons from the Pan-African community have had a hut named after them. The hut in honour of Muta will be officially unveiled between May 28 and 30, in Dakar, Senegal.

"Definitely a big event," Hunter said.

Muta sees it as an honour especially coming as it does from Senegal. "It's an honour coming clear from inna Senegal which is a French speaking country. But from awhile back performing through Europe a lot of Senegalese and Gambians always come to our shows. So it wouldn't be a surprise to know that we are so connected. When we were doing shows in Europe these Senegalese were young and now they grow up big now so they have more influence.......as a matter of fact It Nuh Good Fi Stay Inna Whiteman Country.... a lot of Senegalese and Gambians go back to Africa because of that poem."

This is not the first time Mutabaruka has been so honoured. He was given similar recognition locally some time ago when the Sans Souci Hotel in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, named a one of its luxurious suites after the controversial and outspoken cultural activist.

Cops to seize assets

June 26, 2010

The police say they will be moving to seize the assets of at least 20 men said to be persons of interest.

Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington made the disclosure while speaking at a forum hosted by the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica at the Hilton hotel in Kingston on Thursday.

When contacted afterwards, Ellington said that the majority of the persons whose assets are to be seized were called in for questioning during the state of emergency which was recently imposed on Kingston and St Andrew.

"The police will be carrying out investigations against some of these persons with the aim of seizing their assets," the commissioner told THE STAR.

According to Ellington, those who are being investigated could be charged and tried in court under the Proceeds of Crime Act wherein the state has power to seize assets which are found to be gained through involvement in criminal activity.

In the aftermath of sporadic acts of violence across the country and attacks on the security forces and police stations, the police released the names of over 30 persons, requesting that they turn themselves in for questioning.

Mikey: Pusha T took it upon himself to dedicate a new one to Christopher Dudus Coke, the recently captured, alleged Jamaican drug kingpin and supposed head of the infamous Shower Posse gang.

Dudus has been fighting extradition to the United States from Jamaica since last May when he was indicted on various international drug and weapons charges. During the five week man hunt that led to his arrest over 70 Jamaicans including civilians and security officials were slain in his pursuit.

A St Catherine man who is said to be a member of the St Catherine-based One Order gang was mercilessly beaten on Sunday, after he was accused of sexually molesting a 13-year-old girl.

After the assault, the man was left suffering from a broken hand and foot. He was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital for treatment and was subsequently admitted.

Reports are that the child was sexually molested on Saturday after she was offered a ride in a vehicle. The child reported her ordeal to the other thugs.

This did not go down well with the members of the gang and the accused was said to have been given a beaten after he was tried in a 'jungle justice court'.

"A nuff lick him get. Di baseball bat just a bounce off a him body, each time dem tek it to him," a resident said.

In the past, it is alleged that gang members would have been allowed to pick their sexual targets. However, there was apparently a change in the gang's operations.

FORMER Tivoli Gardens strongman Christopher 'Dudus' Coke wet his trousers when he ran into a group of policemen who took him into custody while he travelled with religious leader Rev Merrick 'Al' Miller in St Catherine last Tuesday, one law enforcer told the Sunday Observer.

Coke, 42, who is accused of being the leader of the ruthless Shower Posse, was travelling with Rev Miller along the Mandela Highway when police intercepted the sports utility vehicle, allowed Miller to leave and took Coke initially to the Spanish Town Police Station and later to Up Park Camp, the army's headquarters in Kingston

Gerd Müller was arguably the greatest marksman of the modern, low-scoring era of world football. Testimony to his goal scoring prowess is the fact that he topped the goal scorers chart in every tournament he participated in, be it domestic or international: Gerd Müller is still the top World Cup goal scorer (14 goals), the best scorer in the European Championships (16), the top goal scorer in all European Cups (64), the top Bundesliga goal scorer (365), the top goal scorer in the German cup (78), and of course his national team`s top goal scorer (68). His record at international tournaments like the World Cup, the European Championship and the Champions Cup is especially staggering, scoring 64 goals in just 60 games at the highest level. During his career, he scored 21 hattricks, four quadrotricks and two quintotricks (only counting competitive games). Seven times did he score five goals in one match, 15 times four goals and 35 times three goals in a single match (only counting competitive games here). In the light of these figures, it did not come as a surprise when Franz Beckenbauer once expressed his gratitude towards his long-time teammate by stating that everything we became, all the trophies we won and triumphs we enjoyed, we owe only to Gerd Müller.

He was the Robin Hood- like ganja-for- guns gangster who wielded *lo**y and fearsome power in Jamaica, authorities say. But the rise of drug lord Christopher "Dudus" Coke may have had its start with a business snub from the eldest son of reggae legend Bob Marley.
Last week, Coke was finally brought to the United States to face weapons charges that could jail him for life, ending weeks of murderous riots that claimed 76 lives when police tried to arrest him.
In the early 1990s, as Coke allegedly took the reins of the family business in the Jamaican slums of Tivoli Gardens, there was one deal that ignited his rage, according to "Born Fi' Dead" author Laurie Gunst. Ziggy Marley, Bob's now-41-year-old son, was building a studio almost on the border of Coke's territory, trying to provide aspiring musicians with a community base.
"Ziggy didn't give the construction work to Dudus and his posse, so the Tivoli don was taking his revenge," Gunst wrote. A series of killings cowed Marley, just as it expanded Dudus' territory and consolidated his rule.
Coke's rise in the underworld was swift -- and deadly, authorities say.
His father, Lester -- known as "Jim Brown" -- was the architect of the Jamaican crime dynasty, twisted from a quiet, soccer-loving boy into a "bad, bad man" after surviving a shooting in his teens, a childhood friend told The Gleaner newspaper. "That's when everything changed."
The elder man fashioned his "Shower Posse" -- so-named for spraying victims with bullets -- into a drug-dealing conglomerate that employed his three sons. The youngest was Christopher, who earned his nickname "Dudus" -- pronounced DUD-us -- because he wore an African-style shirt favored by Jamaican World War II hero and Cabinet minister Dudley Thompson.
"It's basically a family thing -- gangster royalty," said a law-enforcement source familiar with the Coke clan.
The gang rose to prominence on fear and intimidation, gaining a reputation for killing at the slightest offense.
US investigators believe the Shower Posse was responsible for approximately 1,400 drug-related slayings in the United States during the 1980s drug wars.
DUDUS, born Michael Christopher Coke in 1969, "had a brother named Jah T, who was sort of slated to take over but he was subsequently murdered in a shootout," the source said. "There was another brother, Chris Royal. He also died in a shootout."
Their sister was also gunned down. The father was still in charge in 1992 when the United States indicted him on conspiracy charges and he was arrested in Jamaica.
The day before he was set to be extradited, "his jail cell went up in flames and he died," said the law-enforcement source. The violent mystery was never solved and no one was ever charged.
With no one else to take over, Dudus grabbed control of the family business -- and soon became one of the world's most dangerous drug lords, according to the Justice Department.
And, like the American gangsters of the '20s and '30s, he operated in the background, without flash or bling, forging loyalties, eliminating competitors and raking in millions.
Starting in 1994, the Shower Posse sold drugs by the ton, according to Coke's indictment, unsealed in May. One investigator estimated that the gang smuggled at least 2,200 pounds of marijuana -- and almost as much cocaine -- into the United States.
The pot, a mix of ultra-potent Jamaican and Mexican varieties, also got shipped to markets around the world.
"It's global," said the investigator. "It's pretty much anywhere you find Jamaican communities -- the UK, Canada and the United States."
The gang was open to creative payment plans -- cash was good, of course, but it also accepted guns, electronics and even clothing as " 'tribute' payments, in recognition of [Coke's] leadership and assistance," the indictment says.
For sneaking the product into the United States, Dudus preferred that his "mules" be female.
One Jamaican woman traveled to New York as a tourist, to buy clothes to sell back home -- and was ordered by Dudus to carry cocaine hidden in her body.
"If the girls refuse to do so, then their businesses will be threatened and the clothing they sell and the money they earn will be stolen," the woman told investigators.
All this information was gleaned from years of investigative work, which included phone taps that recorded Dudus arranging shipments of drugs and handguns.
But Coke isn't just an alleged kingpin -- he's a folk hero in the slums of Kingston, where citizens revere him for providing handouts to the poorest of the poor, neighborhood security and jobs through his legitimate businesses, including a music-event company.
He's also credited with helping to keep law and order by using his clout to punish crooks in an area where the government has little presence.
"He lives in a poor area, and because of his sale of cocaine, he basically plays the Robin Hood role," Jamaican-born lawyer David Rowe, a University of Miami adjunct professor, told CNN
"After God, then Dudus," one resident scrawled on a sign during the *lo**y manhunt for Coke. "Jesus died for us, so we will die for Dudus," another sign declared.
It's no accident that this jovial, stocky 42-year-old kingpin -- called "the president" and "the general" by his admirers -- sounds and acts much like "Dapper Don" John Gotti. Like the late mob don, Dudus appears the devoted father and community patriarch -- as kindhearted to his neighbors as he is deadly to rivals, ruling a global empire from a sprawling white mansion with purple roof and awnings, nestled amid squalor.
That two-story hilltop compound is where Coke plotted his political cover, supporting the prime minister's Labor Party and getting back millions in government grants for his firms after swinging the election for Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding by delivering the slum vote.
It's also where Coke and his Shower Posse schemed to swamp New York with huge quantities of marijuana and cocaine, some sold in exchange for high-caliber American weapons used on the island to eliminate threats to Coke's fiefdom, law-enforcement sources said.
"To an outsider, it might look like, 'Damn, these guys are mean!' But being from Jamaica, you see it growing up. You see it all your life," one native arrested in New York told author Gunst. "I think maybe Hollywood had a part in the 'rude boy' thing, with the movies they put out, like certain Westerns. Jamaicans act out a lot of that stuff, want to be tough like outlaws."
BECAUSE of Dudus' po litical clout and sup port, Jamaican authorities waffled for months about whether to extradite Coke. But Prime Minister Golding finally gave into US pressure last month. His men headed to Dudus' compound -- and straight into a nightmare.
The slums rebelled. Re sisters piled junk cars onto roads, rigging them with homemade bombs or electric wires. Gang sters shot up police stations. Civilians flooded the streets.
"They don't know, if he's extradited, who will be there for them," Professor Rowe said. "There are mothers wondering, 'Who's going to buy my child lunch?' or 'If I get sick, who's going to pay my hospital bills?' "
Police responded with brutal abandon, killing more than 70 people -- some of whom were dragged into the streets and shot dead, their bodies left to rot, locals said.
Helana Pinnes, an elderly resident of Tivoli Gardens, said she saw army forces shoot two young men at a house across the street.
"They take them out of that house. They take them out and kill them," she told the Guardian of London. "There wasn't a shootout with anybody."
Another witness, Timothy Macintosh, said soldiers fired at unarmed residents. "Most of these people that died, they didn't fight," he said.
After five days of the siege, the United States warned Americans not to travel to Jamaica -- potentially a crippling blow to the nation's economy -- and the government gave up its search for the elusive drug lord.
On Wednesday, police finally prevailed.
Dudus had donned a comical, curly wig and was riding with a pal, the Rev. Al Miller, in a section of Kingston when the vehicle was pulled over at a checkpoint and he was arrested.
Coke claimed he was on his way to the US Embassy to surrender. On Friday, he pleaded not guilty in Manhattan Federal Court. He faces life in prison.
Once in the United States -- hauled here by the DEA in a Learjet -- Dudus claimed regret at the lives lost in the fighting during the search for him.

"I take this decision, for I now believe it to be in the best interest of my family, the community of western Kingston, and in particular the people of Tivoli Gardens and, above all, Jamaica," he said

After two months away, deejay Bounty Killer, real name Rodney Price, is to return to the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court tomorrow, to find out whether the assault case against him will be dropped or will proceed to trial.

The deejay, who was charged after being accused of beating up his girlfriend after she decided to end their relationship, was ordered to go through mediation after the complainant indicated to the court, on the last occasion, that this was the route she wanted to take.
It is alleged that on the night in question the accused dragged the complainant into his vehicle after seeing her at a nightclub, took her to his house and questioned her about the termination of their relationship. The allegations further indicated that he slapped her across the face several times causing her to fall in his bed.
While in his bed, it is alleged that the accused used his knees to pin her down in the bed and slapped her across the face again, then sat in her stomach. Price was arrested and charged on April 5.
Price had pleaded guilty to the charge but the complainant, who had indicated that she wanted to work things out with the deejay, told Resident Magistrate Georgianna Fraser on the last court date that she wanted mediation.
Even though the RM did not agree, the request was granted for the case to return tomorrow. At that time, the RM will decide if the matter will be dismissed, based on mediation. The deejay spent almost one week in jail before being granted bail.

SORRY DAH PARTY YAH HAFFI WHEEL UP AGEN MI DID MISS DEM PICHO YAH...lol

UNITED States law enforcement agents yesterday afternoon delivered former Tivoli Gardens don Christopher Dudus Coke to authorities in New York where he is expected to be arraigned in a Manhattan Federal court today on drug- and gun-trafficking charges.

Late yesterday evening, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara issued a news release saying that Coke was now in that city to face charges of conspiracy to distribute marijuana and cocaine and conspiracy to illegally traffic in firearms.

Coke, who yesterday morning waived his right to an extradition trial, was flown out of the country just after 2:00 pm on a waiting US Marshals Service jet, closing perhaps the 10 most dramatic months in Jamaicas history which brought the Government close to collapse, damaged diplomatic relations with the United States, left more than 70 people dead and hurt the islands image as a tourist destination.

Following yesterdays hearing at a special court held under iron-clad security at the Mobile Reserve along Camp Road in Kingston, Coke issued a statement through one of his lawyers, Tom Tavares-Finson, in which he said that his decision to forego an extradition trial was in the best interest of Jamaica.

I take this decision for I now believe it to be in the best interest of my family, the community of West Kingston and in particular the people of Tivoli and, above all, Jamaica, Coke said in a two-page typewritten statement. I leave Jamaica and my family, in particular Patsy [mother Pauline Halliburton], with a heavy heart, but fully confident that in due course I will be vindicated and returned to them.

If Coke is saddened by his departure from his family, more reasons for anxiety were pressed upon him, as immediately after his 15-minute hearing before Resident Magistrate Georgianna Fraser, he was slapped with an Order of Restraint authorising the State to seize his assets, estimated to be worth several million dollars.

By waiving his right to an extradition hearing, Coke who is said to be fearful of spending time in prison out of concern that he may meet the same fate as his father Lester, who died in a mysterious fire at the General Penitentiary while awaiting extradition to the US in 1992 has headed off what could have been a timeconsuming and expensive process.

At 9:55 yesterday morning, Coke, a short, stocky man with receding hairline and a balding scalp, was escorted by three towering members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force into the small blue and white wooden structure where the hearing took place.

Dressed in a blue and white striped shirt, Clarks shoes and grey jeans, a gold chain, white undershirt and leather-strap watch, Coke, who was allowed to walk freely without being cuffed, glanced at reporters and nodded his head while making his way to his seat just minutes before Court was called to order.

Cokes lawyers Tavares-Finson and George Soutar arrived late, prompting RM Fraser to query whether or not he had legal representation.

Mr Coke, please stand, Fraser beckoned. Do you have counsel representing you in this matter?

Yes, maam, Coke replied in a soft tone, after snapping from his seat.

Who? Fraser asked.

Mr Soutar, replied Coke, who appeared humbled.

The lawyers arrived immediately after Coke gave his answer and following an apology, Soutar indicated that Coke wished to waive his right to an extradition trial, prompting the magistrate to ask Coke if this was his desire. Yes, maam, Coke answered.

Coke was then told by RM Fraser that he had the right to fight his extradition and that he was also within his right to forego that trial. Fraser also informed Coke that he would be tried in the US and outlined the charges to him, while asking if he understood the implication of his decision and if he wanted to be extradited.

Yes, maam, Coke answered in a still soft tone.

Coke was then given a consent form to which he affixed his signature, in the presence of Tavares-Finson and under the gaze of two police officers. Before starting the process, which lasted five minutes, Coke for a second time glanced at reporters covering the proceedings.

Coke was then turned over to the police for extradition after Fraser read out the nature of the charges he will face in the United States.

Shortly before the proceedings came to an end Coke, through Tavares-Finson, thanked the police and members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) for the dignified way in which he was treated. Immediately after the proceedings at 10:15 Coke, who appeared resigned to his fate, was taken away in a dark-tinted blue vehicle, flanked by heavily armed masked security personnel on foot.

This is what he wanted to do, Soutar told the Observer when asked about Cokes demeanour.

Attending the hearing were senior members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and US Marshals personnel. The hearing was not open to the general public and was held at the Mobile Reserve out of security concerns.

In his statement, Coke asked for prayers from Jamaicans and expressed confidence that he would be exonerated when his matter comes up for trial in New York. If convicted, Coke could spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Coke had been on the run since May 24 when members of the security forces invaded his heavily barricaded former stronghold of Tivoli Gardens to serve an arrest warrant on him and restore law and order after coming under unprovoked attacks from rampaging gunmen, who had torched two police stations in Kingston and killed two police officers. A section of the Coronation Market was also torched.

A soldier was shot and killed during the Tivoli Gardens incursion and some 73 civilians killed. More than 50 civilians and members of the security forces were shot and injured.

Coke was apprehended along the Mandela Highway in St Catherine in the company of the Rev Al Miller on Tuesday. Miller said he was accompanying Coke to the US Embassy in Liguanea, where the fugitive wanted to turn himself in to US authorities.

In his statement yesterday, Coke expressed some penitence over those killed in the upheaval, that closed down the business district of downtown Kingston, racking up losses of over $100 million and counting.

Above all, I am deeply upset and saddened by the unnecessary loss of lives which could have been avoided, be it of members of the security forces and over... 80 residents of Tivoli, or any other innocent Jamaicans that has occurred during this time, Coke said in his statement.

Tavares-Finson said yesterday that Coke would have been flown off the island by 3:00. But by 1:33 he was landing at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston in a JDF helicopter, accompanied by two US Marshals who had been in the island prior to yesterday.

Amid tight security and a light drizzle, Coke was ushered into a building, where he changed into a blue jump-suit and was shackled with chains before being taken onto the jet. Local security officials said that other US Marshals were on the jet.

By 2:05 pm, the jet was airborne, and heading for the US.

EVER wondered why people who say they are in love attach the term crazy to it? Thats probably because people in love usually do crazy things to maintain the emotional ties that exist between themselves and their significant others.

Women are notorious for doing the stupidest things when it comes to securing a love connection and below we highlight some of the craziest things they do for the men in their lives.
crazy-aw-14_w370.jpg

1.Watch a match without having the slightest interest in the game: While there is nothing wrong in hanging out with your beau, some women will tell you that watching a three-hour Test match for his sake is like torture.

2. Empty their bank accounts: From getting him the flashiest car, to buying him the latest designs, some women have been extremely generous when it comes to bearing their men gifts. Some even go further than that and give the men complete access to their bank accounts, without any guarantee that the men will be committed to them for a lifetime.

3.Isolate family and friends: Some women not only forget themselves when they hook up with a new guy, but they also forget their friends and families too. When the ultimatum is given to choose between the men and their families, many women choose the men.

4.Share him with other women, and go bareback: Some women go with the general notion that it is better to share him rather than not have him at all. Crazy is what they are! Still others, even while knowing the men are unfaithful, choose to adhere to the mens wishes to have sex without a condom

5.Allow themselves to be punching bags: In some circles, a man is still expected to show his love by beating his woman. Unfortunately, some women still hold strong to this view and will give the men the benefit of the doubt when they profess their undying love.

6. Have a child to keep him: Some women still believe that bearing a child for a man is the best way to keep him faithful or to make him commit. Even while not feeling prepared for a child, some take the plunge into motherhood for the sake of their man.

7.Squeeze into a size 0 to hear him whistle: No woman wants to look bad for a special date and so some, in a bid to look sexy, dont have a problem squeezing into dresses two sizes smaller to get the attention of their suitors. Unfortunately, this sometimes works against them.

8. Fight for his love: Its not uncommon to hear of a woman getting a serious whopping from another in a fight for a man. Were still not sure why the woman should be the one wearing the bruises for the mans indiscretion, but they do it anyway!

9.Get a tattoo of his name: Were sure youve heard that love can be painful, and this has never seemed more true than when we consider a woman who will tattoo her partners name on her body. Sadly, these tattoos often outlast the relationships.

10.Fake it: Although many men would want to have you believe that they are the real Casanova in the bedroom, many women know that this is far from the truth. But in an effort to not burst their mans bubble, many women have no problem faking orgasms.
