During the RSA Conference (2009) held this week, F-Secure's chief research officer Mikko Hypponen told the press on Tuesday that consumers should not use Adobe's Acrobat Reader, but rather switch to an alternate application to read PDF files. Those are strong words, especially when most consumers have Acrobat Reader installed and set as the default PDF application. However, according to Hypponen, 47-percent of the targeted attacks in 2009 have exploited holes in the program; six vulnerabilities have been discovered in Reader so far (SA29773) this year.

Hypponen went on to warn that Adobe Reader is the new Internet Explorer (6), referring to a time when security experts told consumers to switch to another browser due to huge security holes in Microsoft's browser. By getting rid of Reader, he said that consumers will reduce their risk of acquiring malicious code and infecting the PC. "That's my advice," Hypponen said. "I don't expect a Christmas card from Adobe."

PDF files can be especially dangerous to consumers and executives who are accustomed to receiving files in that format. Recipients of an infected PDF merely open the file via Acrobat Reader and activate the embedded malicious code (aka a "targeted attack"), opening a back door in the PC and allowing the attacker to steal sensitive data. Security flaws in the Adobe Acrobat Reader browser plugin also allows the attacker to come in and create a back door, termed as a "drive-by download," when the end user downloads a PDF from a "tainted" website.

Unfortunately, the problem is getting worse. According to Hypponen, F-Secure saw 128 "dangerous" drive-by attacks between Jan 1 and April 16, 2008. In the same time frame this year, F-Secure has seen 2,305 drive-by attacks. To alleviate the problem, Hypponen suggested that Adobe should make security a priority, and to take notes from Microsoft whom releases monthly security patches on a regular basis. Unfortunately, consumers aren't fully aware that Adobe's Acrobat Reader requires updating in a security sense, and often avoid installing crucial updates when the program alerts the end-user of a new patch.

For now, Hypponen suggests that consumers stop using Reader altogether, and locate a compatible program by heading to this website. Are these programs more secure? That's a good question, however, like Firefox and the other non-Internet Explorer browsers, they're not currently in the hacker-oriented spotlight. Still, come this holiday season, it will not be surprising to see Adobe sending Hypponen a Christmas card PDF to his email inbox.

Toontrack music on Wednesday released a collection of drum grooves for Mac-using musicians called The Monster MIDI Pack.

Toontrack says the collection includes over 400 MIDI files, each played by drummer, Peter Fredlander. The pack is available as 4/4 straight and 4/4 Swing in various tempos.

Like other MIDI files included in Toontrack's drum samplers, The Monster MIDI Pack is split up by hats intro variations; hats open/closed grooves; cymbal grooves; hats/ride sidestick grooves; tom and snare grooves; fills; and intro fills.

The grooves are made for standard drum kits with one kick, one snare, two toms, one floor tom, two crash cymbals and one ride cymbal.  Today Sony Ericsson announced a concept model named Idou expected to be release in second half. Not much informatino about the device was given, as it is still under developmet. Sony Ericsson stated that the announcement was a teaser of the final product so not much technical informatino was available. What they did say is that Idou (a name which may change later) has a 3.5 inch touch display and a 12.1 megapixel camera built in. The OS is next generation of Symban. The idea behind Idou is to have all features found in the Walkman and Cybe-shot range into one device. The Walkman and Cyber-shot series will still exist, but Idou will have it all.

Apple Inc. pulled a 99-cent iPhone game called "Baby Shaker" from its iTunes store Wednesday after its premise quiet a crying baby with a vigorous shake prompted outrage.

According to screen shots posted on several Web sites, "Baby Shaker" displayed black-and-white line drawings of a baby. The iTunes description included the line, "See how long you can endure his or her adorable cries before you just have to find a way to quiet the baby down!" Once the iPhone owner finishes shaking the device, the on-screen baby is depicted with large red X's over its eyes.

Public outcry ensued, with organizations including the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome and the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation condemning Apple for approving the game's sale.

The application was designed by Sikalosoft, which also makes a 99-cent "Dice Mosaic" iPhone program that converts digital photos into black and white mosaics made from dice.

Sikalosoft did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment, but "Baby Shaker" was deleted from its Web site Wednesday afternoon.

Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said "Baby Shaker" went on sale Monday, and confirmed that Apple removed it Wednesday. She would not comment on why the program was initially approved for sale nor about how many people downloaded the game.
