Paul English, the cofounder of travel search engine Kayak.com, wants to blanket all of Africa with free and low-cost Wi-Fi. Its a big, big project, one that will consume the next decade of his life, English tells FastCompany.com.
JoinAfrica aims to bring a world of information to a continent whose population only has 8.7% Internet penetration right now. At the core of JoinAfrica is the belief that providing basic Internet is as essential to society as clean water and clean power.
English plans to kick off the nonprofit/for-profit hybrid this summer and begin creating partnerships between JoinAfrica and local African for-profit telcos. JoinAfrica would first branch out existing Web connections in villages using, for example, simple WiMAC hubs. Through these hubs, JoinAfrica would provide residents with free basic Web service, including access to email, Google, Wikipedia, and various news sources. Downloads of data-rich video, porn, or other non-essential sites would be limited (similar to what libraries in the U.S. do now), via a process called bandwidth shaping. Local for-profits would charge for upgraded access and faster connection speeds, and English is also searching for ways to make sure these local companies continuously improve the service and lay more fiber.
I want this to be completely self-sustaining, he says.
From his home in Boston, English says hes already bought satellite dishes and other gear and helped hook up villages in a number of African countries over the past decade, from Burundi to Uganda and Malawi to Zambia. Having email and Skype has been transformative for the handful of villages Ive worked in, he says. He cites the example of a doctor who, unable to diagnose a patients rash, was able to take a photograph of it, email it to a doctor in Boston, and then communicate online to find a cureturns out the mystery rash needed immediate treatment.

You can save money on your printouts by simply changing the font settings on your computer, a University of Wisconsin study has found.
The University's Information Technology Department discovered that by changing the default font from Arial, the most commonly used font, to Century Gothic, you will use 30 per cent less ink in printouts.
Ink, one of the most expensive fluids in the world, accounts for approximately 60 per cent of the cost of a printed page and costs about US$10,000 ($890,000) a gallon, far more than a gallon of gasoline. However, Century Gothic consumes both less ink and less toner, a saving of about $267,000 on a gallon of ink.
Rohan Reynolds, senior marketing executive at SSP-Aptec, a computer supplies company, told Sunday Finance that while he knew that some fonts can use less ink, he was surprised that Century Gothic can save as much as 30 per cent of the cost.
Reynolds said that Arial and Times New Roman, the most common fonts, would use more ink than Garamond, Courier and Century Gothic because of the difference in the style of the fonts. He said the way a common letter such as 'I' is presented on screen, suggests that one would use more ink than the other. For example, Century Gothic has a straight 'I', while Arial has a flat base, which would use more ink to print just the one letter.
"Letters are more slender in Century Gothic than Arial," Reynolds added. He however noted that Arial and Times New Roman are more popular because they are the fonts accepted for business mail, some academic styles, such as the APA format, and is used in PDF documents.
"The main reason is that it is very easy to read in whatever size from 8, 9, to 10 point fonts," Reynolds said about Arial.
He added that the good thing about the result of the research is that Century Gothic has some of the same benefits as Arial, in that it is also easy to read and looks good on-screen and on the printed page, a fact that the University also noted.
The benefits in terms of savings is not comparable between the fonts though. Reynolds said that for individual home use, 30 per cent savings might not seem like a lot, but for universities, businesses, government agencies and large corporations that consume copious amounts of ink, 30 per cent can be a lot of money.
"I would recommend that they use Century Gothic especially in those large organisations," Reynolds said. "It will take a while for persons to get adjusted to it but if you use it as your default font it will make a difference".
He acknowledged that while there is the potential to save a lot of money with the change, in many of these organisations where ink is used frequently it is not the user who pays for the ink, therefore the user may have no incentive to switch.
"If you leave it up to them it won't catch on," Reynolds said.
The University of Wisconsin recognised this problem and through its technology council converted its default font in Outlook campus-wide and notified the members of the change.
Said the University: "This change will occur the next time you reboot your PC," the University said in a statement to staff and students of the institution. "In addition, we encourage everyone to switch to Century Gothic as their default font in Entourage for Macintosh, Word, and Excel."
Reynolds recommended other ways that can reduce the use of ink and the cost of printed documents.
Firstly, he reccommends selecting the correct printer without paying too much attention to cost. He compares this to buying an energy-saving, higher priced lightbulb, over a lower priced regular bulb that burns more energy.
"Try not to pay too much attention to the cost of the printer, but to the yield per page," he said, adding "The higher the yield per page, the more printed pages you will get per ink cartridge."
As a guide Reynolds said that a toner that yields 3000 pages really works out to about 2000 pages or less because the 'yield' is typically five per cent of the printed page. Printing a letterhead, for example is equivalent to 20 pages based on the calculation of per page yield.
He also recommended switching the default print quality to 'draft' mode instead of 'normal' or 'best' because draft uses less ink and is generally of good quality.
"Never print colour unless its absolutely needed. It will cost you about one and a half times what it costs you to print in black," Reynolds said. "It is more expensive and you get less toner when you buy coloured ink."
He also recommended that companies restrict printing in colour to only a few staff members.
And finally, Reynolds said when buying printing supplies, persons should ask for the large capacity version of the toners. He said the physical size is the same, but there is more toner in the large capacity toner cartridge, than in the standard cartridge even though the large capacity toner costs a bit more. "It is two and a half times the capacity at less than two times the price". The large toner can yield as much as 8000 pages, while the standard toner yields about 2000 pages, while the cost is not twice the amount of the standard toner.

Facebook today launched its latest missile in the war against Google for the trophy of world wide web domination. At F8, the companys developer conference, in San Francisco, CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced the companys Open Graph, which essentially extends Facebooks like feature to a multitude of external web sites, allowing users to feed their activity back into their Facebook news feeds. It also gives brands and site owners the ability to better track demographic data of the users visiting their sites. With this feature, Facebook has made a huge move in driving forward the semantic Web something that Google failed to do with Buzz.
Facebook has won the Internet, said Damon Cortesi, CTO and co-founder of Untitled Startup. Facebook has always been social, but in terms of dominating the Web over Google they have made strides today.
Thus far, companies such as Yelp, Pandora, CNN.com and countless others have installed the like feature. Levis has even built a dedicated Levis Friends Store that includes like options for all of its items. When a person likes a Levis item, or even recommends a CNN story, it not only shows up on the users Facebook profile, but on the brand or news web page itself. Moreover, if a Facebook user has already liked the item, his or her friends will see that when they visit the external site.
Apparently it takes all of 10 minutes for a Web site owner to implement the Open Graph feature into its digital presence.
The ease by which you can now integrate Facebook onto your site is a ridiculously simple proposition to any web site owner, Cortesi said. For one, it doesnt take long, and two, you now have the worlds largest social network talking about you. Why wouldnt you do this?
Brands who implement the like feature and play into the Open Graph can add a Facebook token to their Web sites that claims ownership of a page, and then can leverage Facebooks Insights, which is essentially a mini Google analytics. They can then get demographic data, such as gender and age breakdowns, as well as frequency of shared pages.
This type of data for marketers is huge, Cortesi said.
While a step forward, users cannot forget the privacy implications of this type of feature. Privacy still remains the unknown black hole of the semantic web, and the ability for brands to make Facebook integration even easier will create an explosion of Facebook inclusion on web sites. This could lead many users even further down the path of allowing themselves to be potentially profiled.

The trouble began Wednesday when McAfee pushed out a virus update after identifying a new threat to Windows PCs. The update, which passed quality testing, created a problem for a some enterprise customers and home users of the company's VirusScan Plus, Internet Security Suite, and Total Protection products.
"In our ongoing efforts to protect our customers from a seemingly endlessly multiplying variety and volume of attacks, today we released an update file that clearly did more harm than good," said Barry McPherson, McAfee's executive vice president of worldwide technical support and customer service.
"This all relates to the McAfee update for Microsoft Windows XP with SP3, and provides users with a false positive detection of virus 'w32/wecorl.a'," said Jart Armin, a security expert with Host Exploit. "Ultimately it results in uncontrolled restarts and loss of networking functionality for the PCs updated."
Cleaning Up
The update was removed from McAfee's download servers within hours in order to stop any additional impact on customers, McPherson said.
While McAfee reported the error impacted only a moderate number of customers, reports show the error wreaked havoc on millions of personal computers. "Current community estimates reveal around 2.5 to 3 million PCs affected worldwide," Armin said.
McAfee on Thursday released a fix for both home and business users. Home users can access directions at http://service.mcafee.com/faqdocument.aspx?id=TS100969 and business users at http://vil.nai.com/vil/5958_false.htm, but it requires a techie to personally fix each PC, Armin said.
"Mistakes happen. No excuses. The nearly 7,000 employees of McAfee are focused right now on two things," McPherson said. He said the plan is to first help customers who have been affected to get back to business. Once that is done, McAfee plans to put processes in place to avoid errors similar to this one from happening again.
"Best advice, if you have not yet, do not implement or run the McAfee update of 04/21/10. If you have the blue screen of death as a result of the update, grab a techie and pray," Armin said.
